Check Out Israel’s Newest Missile Defense System: ‘David’s Sling’

(TheBlaze/AP) — Israel successfully tested its newest missile defense system Sunday, the military said, a step toward making the third leg of what Israel calls its “multilayer missile defense” operational.

The “David’s Sling” system is designed to stop mid-range missiles. It successfully passed its test, shooting down its first missile in a drill Sunday in southern Israel, the military said.

The system is designed to intercept projectiles with ranges of up to 300 kilometers (180 miles).

Israel has also deployed Arrow systems for longer-range threats from Iran. The Iron Dome protects against short-range rockets fired by militants in the Gaza Strip and Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon. The Iron Dome was crucial in the most recent round of fighting, shooting down hundreds of rockets from Gaza.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said the success of Iron Dome highlighted the “immense importance” of such systems.

“David’s Sling,” also known “Magic Wand,” is developed by Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and U.S.-based Raytheon Co. and is primarily designed to counter the large arsenal of Hezbollah rockets in Lebanon.

The military said the program, which is on schedule for deployment in 2014, would “provide an additional layer of defense against ballistic missiles.”

And it can’t come soon enough.   On Sunday, Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah promised to rain “thousands of rockets” on Tel Aviv in any future conflict.

The next generation of the Arrow, now in the development stage, is set to be deployed in 2016. Called the Arrow 3, it is designed to strike its target outside the atmosphere, intercepting missiles closer to their launch sites. Together, the two Arrow systems would provide two chances to strike down incoming missiles.

Israel also uses U.S.-made Patriot missile defense batteries against mid-range missiles, though these failed to hit any of the 39 Scud missiles fired at Israel from Iraq In the first Gulf War 20 years ago. Manufacturers say the Patriot system has been improved since then.

@NZKIWI, your earlier assessment of the “David” vs “Goliath” is correct. It isn’t Israel vs Hammas or Hesbolla.
it is the countries that support and hide behind them and as you said they include Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Yemen, Sudan, Iran, Afghanistan and the list is even longer, Pakistan, etc. So the David vs Goliath comparison is very much correct but you will never see that on the MSM in the rest of the world!. I have (BTW) deleted the BBC and others from my bookmarks as sad as that may sound they used to fairly impartial but I guess buggering young boys finally caught up with them as well.

The ‘David’ part is good, but the ‘Goliath’ image is a bit off! It’s more like David v. Pipsqueak! Maybe a few ‘Bunker-busters’ would neutralize the tunnel system through which these rockets appear to enter Gaza? Maybe some ‘defective’ parts could be introduced in the supply line? Maybe retaliation against the source of the rockets’ manufacture? It seems like Israel works its intelligence networks very well, identifying targets one-by-one as they commit indescretions that give away their participation and position!

Good for Israel! They are advancing Ronnie’s StarWars vision much faster than thought possible! But, what they need in advance is an Offensive Weapon, paired with their Defensive Weapons–a ‘Retaliator’, one of which would be launched for each incoming target! The ‘Retaliator’ would respond to the point of launch of the incoming missile! Initially guided by launch-point solution from the detection radars, maybe lining up with the incoming trajectory-reversed, then ‘sniffing’ its way to the point of origin as it acquires the track of propulsion gases from the invader! Acquire, calc line-of-position, line up on reverse trajectory, sniff, mark a point, wander a bit, sniffing, mark another point, then project the third point, etc, guided to the point of origin! Boom! Too bad if it’s a school or mosque–the idiots should have been denied use of those facilities in the first place! It is really stupid for a high-density area to be popping random shots at a sparsely-populated area–the math just isn’t in your favor! Duh!

@SALAMANDER, My thoughts exactly! Iron Dome, Arrow, and this latest defensive system may, as Reagan said & hoped, eventually make surface to surface missiles as obsolete as catapults or crossbows. Hopefully there may come the day when all nations of the world will have similar systems, making short, intermediate, and even ICBMs, nearly useless, and not worth the cost to build.

Next on the scientific agenda should be a pop-up force field that would activate within picoseconds of the detection of a chemical explosion, and contain or block it.

@JARHEAD Of course Israel is our ally..We have given Israel 3 billion a year in foreign aide not to mention that we have carried them militarily..It is because of us that they have the most weaponized military in the ME..And we’d better..after all..when the USS Liberty was there in observance of their war..just off the coast the guys were sunbathing and hanging out with our flag in plain view while Israeli planes flew overhead for about 3 days, our gus waving at them..then all of a sudden they attacked our ship..they tried to kill every man and destroy our ship..and blame it on Egypt..thing is..we don’t know if they did it as a cover because at the same time..they were killing a thousand Egyptian prisoners of war..or they just wanted us to get involved in a war with Egypt..Also..you might want to check out the Levonne Affair where they bombed our theaters in Egypt..and blamed it on Egypt..The Massad has ratted out our intelligence to the Communists and caused our people to die..and they followed the “terrorists” from 9/11 all the way up to the event with a front row seat and high fived it.. So..are they our allies..or are we theirs? I would say that we are theirs..but by golly..they will get us a free ticket to heaven..

I know that you are borderline paranoid but please try to stick to the facts. For one, Israel claimed responsibility for the Liberty attack and never blamed Egypt. For another, Israel wasn’t killing POWs, but was actually releasing many non-officers because they couldn’t afford to provide for the immense number of prisoners.

Israel is surrounded by hostile intent, and abandoned by Barack-o-Bama! They tread lightly, so as to maintain the high road! When they move in for the kill-watch out! The cease-fire will give them plenty of intelligence to use when the host-ilities resume! When that 1st Rockette dances across the stage, they will muster simultaneous strikes on a variety of targets and thoroughly punish the miscreants! We should hang our heads in shame for the way we have treated a long-time, faithful ally! It is going to come back to haunt us.

No, it is the Muslim Brotherhood. Luckily, they are still trying to control their client states, so they are unready for a major conflict – at the moment.

These states include; Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and will include Lebanon. They are working on Syria and Jordan.

Their anti-Israel allies are Iran and Turkey. Turkey has the sixth largest military in the world, after the UK.

Once the MB can organise these nations onto a cohesive war footing, they will attack Israel. They have said so publically and repeatedly. Going on past performance, who would not believe them?

Israel is in mortal danger and they are the ones who are told by the world to be restrained and tolerant…

For those who are saying Israel will be attacked from all sides, do not forget the estimated 200 to 400 nukes in the possession of Israel. Iran might get one good shot off at Israel, but Iran will soon be transformed into a large glass factory as well as any other attacker. Care to start a pool when the Egyptians will be stupid enough to try to attack Israel, and how long it will take the Israelis to reach the Suez Canal again? Probably a little longer than the 1967 conflict, but this time I don’t think they will stop at the Suez Canal.

      @NZKiwi:

Here is some more news from Voice to America today: the UN appears to be ready to mandate a full Palestinian state on the ’67 lines. One contact I have in the Middle East sent me an alert a few days back saying Obama is making noises that Jerusalem will become a UN protectorate defended by US troops.

Take it for what it is worth, its the only report I have so far of it.

Now the matter of the UN investigating the US drones-blow-terrorist-away is set to occur in the new year; and to be declared as grounds for prosecution of all involved as war criminals.

How long until the enemies of this nation, terrorist or otherwise, or even our own government under the insanity of Obama hits our people here at home?

Cosco sells small surveillance drones, which I imagine can be modified to hit targets (kamikazi style) or to monitor the activities around selected targets. The madness of Obama has hit new heights.

      @NZKiwi:

The story of David v. Goliath tells a good lesson for all involved in war, an adversary who is underestimated by his foe becomes all the more dangerous when he strikes via the unexpected. Goliath learned this with a sling stone to the head, and then subsequent beheading.

One thing most people ignore is the reason David took the OTHER sling-stones with him, Goliath had brothers in the area, and they would seek to take David down on the battlefield upon news of their brothers death.

FYI – if you have not heard of or read an interesting book on the Christian-Islam conflict in many areas of the world, I might suggest checking out a book called “The Tenth Parallel.’

The information within it compliments those of Beck and many others who study the subject; though I imagine by now you could easily give the author much more information.

So how many of Israels people are they expected to sacrifice to their enemy’s to keep peace each year? It’s like sacrificing to the evil gods so that they will in turn give you a fake peace treaty. Israel needs to quit playing this game and start firing nuclear weapons back at their enemy’s in Iran and others. What would Russia do to those who do what Iran does? Or Hezbolah? They would march their nuclear weapons up to their borders and tell their enemy’s “NO MORE!”. Their enemy’s are advancing, and giving up Gaza was Israels first obvious mistake.

I want to tell you what it’s like to live in most of Israel right now.
A missile is fired by Hamas in Gaza…
    A siren goes off.
You get 15 seconds to find shelter.
I want Americans to think about what that means.
If you lived in a place where missiles were fired at you…
    Hundreds a day…
And you would get just 15 seconds to hide…
    How would you live?
Stop what you’re doing.
    Run to a basement.
    A shelter.
And if you can’t make it inside…
Lie flat on the ground with your arms over your head.
That’s life in Israel right now.
None of us would be willing to accept this.
None of us would have to.
Every country has a right to defend itself against terror.
    But they keep telling Israel…
    “don’t overreact!”
    “don’t fire back!”
    “be careful!”
    “don’t ramp things up!”
    Let me get this straight…
If Mexico fired a missile into El Paso, you know what we would do?
If Japan fired a missile into Beijing, you know what China would do?
So why does Israel have to hold back?
Why does every country get to defend itself…
    But not Israel?
    Why could that be?
I think we know why………………………………………… History will repeat itself ,the Good and the Bad

These systems are purely defensive and therefore won’t be ending any wars. Obama doesn’t want to see Israel destroyed per say, only forced to accept his demands and to equalize the balance of power in the region. Obama seems to actually think that if everyone is on a level playing field they’ll stop fighting each other. That’s why he’s made America weaker as well. He think the US and Israel are too powerful and believes that if he can keep Israel from taking any kind of offensive that it will bring peace. Just look at how hard he tried to avoid an Israeli ground invasion.

What’s the value of a people?

I believe a society’s contribution to the betterment of mankind is a fine measure of a people. Beyond world contributions, another measure of a people is how their society treats its citizens. Are Jews perfect? Of course not, but by any measure it seems obvious that the Jews are at least a hundred times more valuable than the Muslims.

Muslims have won 6 Nobel Prizes, the Jews over 160 ( http://www.rollitup.org/politics/307020-nobel-prize-winners-jews-vs.html )

Israelis have acquired over 16,800 patents – Arabs have less than 840. ( http://elderofziyon.blogspot.com/2010/01/israelis-have-16805-patents-arabs-have.html ) This does not include non Israeli Jews.

If that wasn’t enough, here’s a few more comparisons: http://www.imninalu.net/Israel-Arabs.htm

I’m not including Arab scientific knowledge, contributed over a thousand years ago, before Islam took over and squelched all sensible reasoning.

Worldwide: Over 1.2 billion Muslims – About 12 million Jews. (A ratio of 100:1)

Silly story. Sillier headline. The largest nuke ever detonated, (The Russian “Tsar Bomba” about 50-megatons, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsar_Bomba ) would affect the moon less than a small meteor impact. The flash might be fun to watch, especially if done during a new moon, but the damage would be miniscule, and not even viewable from earth without the aid of a large telescope.

God bless Reagan for the Star Wars Defense System. Unfortunately for us it was to be stopped. But thank God again for Israel keeping ahead of the game.
