The state of Florida has spent roughly $45,000 on a study of the sex lives of its residents, offering the participants $10 CVS gift cards in return for their answers.
The South Florida Sun Sentinel reported Sunday that the Department of Health sent surveys to 4,100 women between the target ages of 18 and 24, which officials say will help them understand women’s need for family-planning services.
The 12-page questionnaire, sent out in September and October, reportedly had 46 questions. They included, according to the Sun Sentinel:
• How did you feel emotionally when you had unprotected sex — were you trying to get pregnant, were you in the “heat of the moment and just went with the flow,” or did you find the man attractive and “thought it would be nice to have a baby with him?” Did you feel “powerless”? Or was it that you “felt emotionally connected with your partner during sex”?
• How old were you when you first had sex? Last time you had sex with a man, did you do anything to keep from getting pregnant? If not, why not?
• Has a sexual partner ever “told you he would have a baby with someone else if you didn’t get pregnant?” “Physically forced you to have sex?” “Hurt you physically because you did not agree to get pregnant?”
• Are you depressed? Have you ever been physically abused? What’s your religion? Do you smoke? How much do you weigh?
Acting Director Betsy Wood of the state Division of Community Health Promotion apparently added her own message, reassuring: “Taking part is up to you. You can refuse to take part. You can join now and quit later. Either way, it won’t affect how we treat you.”
The state recently chose to halt the program, after a minor received the letter and raised awareness.
“We obviously offered an apology sent back in writing,” state Surgeon General Dr. John Armstrong said, “and will work to ensure that moving forward, this never happens again.” His communications director added that the survey was written by Armstrong’s predecessor, and they are “glad to hear the department has stopped using it.”
Florida resident David Brown said one of the women who received the letters showed it to him, and he thought it was “incredibly offensive and invasive.”
“She thought that it was an unconscionable invasion of her privacy,” Brown explained. “There wasn’t enough information to tell her who really did this and where the budget was for it, whether the information was going to be kept private, and really…how does this information in any way help?”
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

You keep mentioning the word debate. Are you posting on the same website as I am? What debate are you referring to? These individuals have no desire to debate. They want to talk in circles and bounce regurgitated information off one another (seems to be all that this website is good for). You seem to take no issue with the majority of the drivel on this website. The majority of my posts either pose questions or correct individuals on the survey process.

Nov. 26, 2012 at 7:11amHow do you think scientific surveys are done, Keaton? Offering gift cards as compensation is pretty standard practice. Doing an online poll would be unscientific and would likely only hit a select portion of the targeted demographic. Calling on home phones would also likely miss the target demographic (do most 19-24 year olds even live at home or have a landline?).
I personally don’t want any of my tax money going to this kind of thing, but realistically 45k is a drop in the bucket. The tone of the article itself (especially the title) is ridiculous. Only story should have been about why a minor received a survey.

Nov. 26, 2012 at 7:20amFirst off I totally disagree with spending 45k of tax payer dollars for this nonsense. Rog4Tum, are you really this ignorant or do you just work for the Obama administration? You are laughable and are completely wrong in every debate you to take to make yourself look smart. Not to mention, to contradict yourself in your own statements. Like this, …..”There are countless surveys of this nature. It has NOTHING to do with socialism. This survey, and others of its kind, add to an already existing scientific database of human sexual habits (a database that is incredibly useful within the scientific community).” you say its needed but you say already there are countless studies so apparently its NOT needed and IS a waste of money. Next thing to discredit you about is SCIENTIFIC studies should not be done with taxpayer money…if scientists want this study done..THEY PAY FOR IT. Not the taxpayers. Next thing..a lot of you are yapping about…I dont see anywhere this came from Tallahassee..it was done in SOUTH Florida not Tallahassee. It could have been in this departments budget as something else, like ALL politicians are good at doing. Either way…its not up to taxpayers to fund scientific research.

You could not be any more wrong (hopefully). First, just because there is existing research on a topic does not mean that any further research is rendered unnecessary (incredibly dense statement on your part). There is no such thing as too much data. Second, scientists receive research grants and hardly, if ever, pay out of pocket for their research (not even sure where/how you came up with this idea). Now that we have decided that I have not contradicted myself, in the slightest, and that you are just speaking random nonsense, we can press on.

You obviously didn’t read the article thoroughly. It states that the research was not done for “scientific purposes,” but “…Department of Health sent surveys to 4,100 women between the target ages of 18 and 24, which officials say will help them understand women’s need for family-planning services.” In other words, the Florida DOH wants to know what its market is – and why there are so many bimbos who get knocked up and end up on the government dole. This may be a proactive and preventive thing for them to address, but for the price paid and the tenor of the questions asked (I wonder how many women chose not to answer who may be frequent fliers to the welfare department or the abortion clinics) it was a ham-handed way to find out pretty personal information.

You keep challenging people’s comments but fail to provide anything to move the debate forward. My opinion, if anybody cares, is that we shouldn’t be paying people 10.00 a pop for ANY questionaire! The invasiveness of the survey is obvious but if the women of Florida feel like sharing their very personal lives with the State, why should I care? I’ll just shake my head and move on.

I’m not even sure what you’re saying. Please distinguish what a want from need is regarding sex. I need a bit more clarification, as an individual’s sex drive is neither the government’s or our business. I’m certainly not going to dictate what is appropriate as to what sort of premium a person places on their sex life.
Generally sex can lead to pregnancy, but not if you do it right. There are classes for those that want to have the former, without the latter. Obviously the subject escapes some folks understanding. There should be very large classes given the number of unplanned pregnancies in the US. What folks do with the info they receive is none of our damn business, as long as it doesn’t impinge on the pre or post born.

This is really not that hard. I feel that tax money can be better spent on other more important things instead of a questionaire to find out what a woman weighs. I come to this stance because I feel our government has a limited role and responsibility under our constitution. There is an opinion. Where is your stance? I am finding it slightly concerning that you cannot seem to follow what it is that I am doing here. I am not here to spout off some baseless opinion. I came to the thread regarding survey research to dispell the nonsense being passed from one ignorant individual to the next. I know a great deal of information regarding the survey process from a scientific point of view. I am shedding light based on that understanding. I care not of your opinion on this issue (as it is ignorant of the benefits of scientific research). Another reason I have decided to post on this thread is to make people back up their nonsensical claims with evidence and facts (look at how many questions I have asked that get at this desire) instead of simply talking in circles.

As you were telling JOHN, you are here to spread the word to the simpleton masses your words of wisdom regarding the science of developing surveys. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGx94VPb8V8
Then, so far I have yet to see anything more than your shallow accusations that all here are ignorant. And, you have not enlightened us yet. I get the feeling that you took a short class regarding surveys. Then, put one together when you and your classmates elected your class officers just a couple of months ago.
Okay though, here is your chance to fill us in. Please explain your position on the above survey. While at it please explain to those who you have called ignorant why you feel that way.
I feel that this particular survey smacks of a fraternity prank rather than rather than a serious endeavor. Another view of this thing, is that can also be seen as a “make me look busy and productive to my boss” type of job retention. There is not enough funding to make it statewide and effective. If the survey itself is not effective, the $43,000 is a waste of money. But please, tell us we are still ignorant oh might one.

Nov. 26, 2012 at 10:32amRJJ,
Spouting off random nonsense hardly makes your opinion (that is what it is) cogent. If you read all of my posts you will find that the majority deal with pointing out common practices in the survey process (usually following a short question or two asking individuals to explain their reasoning). You make a bunch of random claims at the bottom of your post and do not back a single one of them up with evidence (rendering your opinion/argument incredibly weak). In terms of me expressing my viewpoint on the article at hand, I have already. The data collected via this survey will add to an existing database of human sexual habits and will increase our understanding of said paradigm (I have stated other reasons elsewhere).

Another point that I have made is that there is not enough funding to make this survey practical statewide. Feel free to prove me wrong, but do it without saying that you do not understand my statement. Its quite clear.
Back to the funding again. How many salaries will $45K pay for how long to conduct this survey? When the funding runs out, what happens to the survey results? Do, they sit in a computer somewhere just waiting to be hacked? Very likely, I’d say.
So far, you have a very narrow viewpoint regarding this subject, and do not wish to even consider or understand other opinions. Seeking simple gratification?

Nov. 25, 2012 at 7:39pmAbsurd comment. Asking for religious affiliation is a very common metric in survey research of this nature. No individual that has any sort of scientific training would have a problem with such a question.

Nov. 25, 2012 at 8:20pmSCROTUM4_2012, Okay, you’ve just proven what I originally thought. You certainly are a juvenile. Being out of the loop has nothing to do with whether or not you agree with anybody here. We require no consensus, and you’re free to your own thoughts. If you disagree with others here, be prepared for others to express it when they disagree with you.
MONK, he might be, but I now starting to think that while he was sitting in his mom’s basement while on Thanksgiving holiday he merely tripped over this site. Bet that he is slightly younger than TROLL(NAPOLEAN_DYN-O-MIGHT)MONGER.

You refuse to answer any of my questions and simply attack me as an individual, yet I am the juvenile? Makes sense (really original with the “scrotum” label as well). I have no problem if people disagree with me, I welcome it. The problem is that no one on this website, that I have encountered thus far, has any sort of evidence to make a coherent argument. Keep it up, you are blending in with the rest of the sheep.

Nov. 25, 2012 at 8:40pmSCROTUM4_2012, I am in no way attacking you for being an individual. I insult you for being a sh/t slinging kid who is putting on airs trying to act so high and mighty. Then you live down to that illustration by admitting to not understanding one of the most common cliches in the nation. And, a simple one at that. You don’t know it, because you don’t have enough experience under your belt. You are not only a child, you are quite the simp too. Furthermore, if you don’t like any of us talking to you in this manner, just go back and look at your previous statements. Respect is an earned commodity.
Now, is there anything else that I have said that needs to be explained, or do you get it yet?

Nov. 25, 2012 at 7:22pmNothing better than reading the comments of the scientifically illiterate. A survey of this magnitude could have far reaching scientific consequences. This nonsensical website just spews absurdities over and over without understanding the nature of the word that surrounds it. This “article” states, “Acting Director Betsy Wood of the state Division of Community Health Promotion apparently added her own message, reassuring: ‘Taking part is up to you. You can refuse to take part. You can join now and quit later. Either way, it won’t affect how we treat you,’” without understanding the scientific process of surveys. The reason I copied that portion is that it uses the word “apparently.” This is informed consent (a necessary piece of the survey process). Subjects must understand that their participation is voluntary.

Nov. 25, 2012 at 8:55pmRog4tum……
The whole point is that as we slide into socialism, we will give up more and more freedoms without even noticing. In regards to Obamacare, and as the government slowly takes over more and more of the healthcare system, they would, naturally, feel more entitled to know more of your life as it relates to your health.
I don’t think that is an unreasonable thing to expect. Think about it…….
You hear collectivists say things like “greater good”.
Is mountain-climbing, or motorcycle-riding, or jet-sking, or driving a race car for the greater good?
The government may not stop you from partaking of your favorite activity. Right? but………..
Why not impose a “healthcare reimbursement surcharge” at POS (point of sale) before you lace up those bungi-cord ankle straps? That would be easy enough to do. The bungi-business has to pay for a license, pay a surcharge tax for each person who jumps (which will be passed to the customer). Of course, he’ll have to take your name when you sign the disclaimer before jumping. The gov will have your signiture, so when you go to the hospital for the pulled muscle you got while jumping you can’t deny that you are a bungi-jumper.
What I’m saying is that you either want freedom or you do not, and that government-run healthcare does not lend itself to more freedom, only more government intrusion.
America will go quietly to government slavery or we will have a violent revolution where friend and family will fight each

Nov. 25, 2012 at 9:06pmWhat an incredibly absurd conclusion to jump to. This survey is not unique in its material. There are countless surveys of this nature. It has NOTHING to do with socialism. This survey, and others of its kind, add to an already existing scientific database of human sexual habits (a database that is incredibly useful within the scientific community).

Nov. 25, 2012 at 6:42pmWell if the state has to provide the services they have to know what services to provide.
As it is now law that Planned Parenthood get checks via Obamacare the days of the blank check to Planned Parenthood to do what every they want are over. Bureaucrats have to make sure that money is going to the people that need it and then report to the federal HHS on the progress of said money, all under Obamacare.
This study tells the state what is needed and expect to see more studies like this just not public. There is no database that has this information on what services is needed for a new market of state provided healthcare that Obamacare regulates.

Nov. 25, 2012 at 6:38pmMy questions to our fine state government in light of this asinine survey and the research associated with it.
1) How did you feel emotionally when you had unprotected survey completion — were you trying to get rich, were you in the “heat of the moment and just went with the flow,” or did you find the bubble sheet attractive and “thought it would be nice to ask a lot of intrusive questions?” Did you feel “empowered”? Or was it that you “felt emotionally connected with the young twenty-something females in south Florida”?
• How old were you when you first had a survey? Last time you had a survey with a man, did you do anything to see about the need for the expenditure? If not, why not?
• Has a pollster ever “told you he would have survey with someone else if you didn’t get surveyed too?” “Physically forced you to take a survey for research purposes?” “Hurt you physically because you did not agree to complete a survey?”
• Are you depressed (we have a survey for that too)? Have you ever been physically abused (another survey)? What’s your religion (we really need to know this, for our list)? Do you smoke (we can send a survey on that if you like)? How much do you weigh (FSU girls answer to the nearest 100 pounds)?
