GOP Softens on Susan Rice as Next Sec. of State, But ‘There Will Be a Lot of Questions’

Republican Opposition to Susan Rice as Sec. of State Begins to Crack | McCain, Graham

(TheBlaze/AP) — Republican opposition to U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice as the next secretary of state began to crack Sunday as Sen. John McCain said she was “not the problem” in the White House’s handling of the Sept. 11 attack in Libya and suggested he could be persuaded to swing behind her possible nomination.

McCain’s comments provide an opening for the Obama administration, which struggled mightily in the weeks leading up to the Nov. 6 election to tamp down speculation of a cover-up involving the attack against the U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi. The assault killed four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya.

At issue is Rice’s account – as the administration’s representative on the Sunday talk shows Sept. 16 – that the violence was the spontaneous result of a mob angered by an anti-Muslim video posted on YouTube. She said she relied on talking points provided by the intelligence community that were later discredited.

“I think she deserves the ability and the opportunity to explain herself and her position,” McCain, R-Ariz., told “Fox News Sunday.” “But she’s not the problem. The problem is the president of the United States” who misled the public on terrorist involvement.

McCain’s remarks were in contrast to his previous stance that Rice wasn’t qualified to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton, who is expected to step down soon as the top U.S. diplomat, and that he would do “whatever is necessary” to block Rice’s possible nomination.

Here is video of McCain’s remarks, via Mediaite:

Rice is widely seen as Obama’s first choice for the job as secretary of State. As the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, McCain would have considerable sway in the Senate’s screening of Rice.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, McCain’s close friend and colleague on the committee, told ABC “This Week” he still suspects the White House intentionally glossed over obvious terrorist links in the attack to keep voters from questioning Obama’s handling of national security.

But instead of repeating his prior assertion that he was “dead set” against a Rice promotion, Graham suggested he looked forward to hearing her out. But if Rice is nominated, he assured, “there will be a lot of questions asked of her about this event and others.”

Here is video of Graham’s explanation, via ABC (skip to around 9 minutes):

The subtle shift in GOP tenor on Rice could be the result of internal grumblings on how far to take party opposition. Democrats picked up extra seats in the election to maintain their narrow majority, making it that much harder for the remaining 45 Republicans to block the president’s nominees.

One senior GOP Senate aide said Sunday that Republicans hadn’t united against Rice and were not convinced that she was worth going after.

“There’s a definite sense within the caucus that you have to be conservative about where you put your firepower,” said the aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak publicly on internal GOP deliberations. “The question is whether the caucus is prepared to filibuster her, and I’m not sure we were.”

Intelligence officials have said they knew immediately that the Sept. 11 incident was a terrorist attack and suspected that the local al-Qaida branch was involved. But they also initially believed that the attack may have grown spontaneously from a protest against a YouTube video.

Unclassified talking points provided to Rice and other administration officials in the days following the attack omitted references to terrorists and al-Qaida because intelligence officials said the information was tenuous and could tip their hand in the investigation. The administration also didn’t want to prejudice a criminal investigation.

Rice said she used those talking points in five Sept. 16 interviews in defending the administration’s protection of overseas diplomats, saying “clusters of extremists” had “hijacked” film protests. Officials say it wasn’t until after Rice spoke that intelligence agencies adjusted the assessment to clarify that the attack was not spontaneous or even related to a peaceful protest.

Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee and a member of the House Intelligence Committee, said Rice should have reviewed the raw classified intelligence and not just relied on unclassified talking points provided to her.

Graham said he remains unconvinced that Rice was relying solely on information provided to her by intelligence agencies. But Graham said he is most concerned with the broader administration’s handling of the matter.

“This is about four dead Americans,” he said on “This Week” on ABC. “This is about a national security failure. We need a focused look at what happened here.”

So you are disappointed withy McCain, Graham, King, and Boehner. Please tell me just one time
that you were encouraged about anything they accomplished in congress. So why do you think it was going to happen now.
Side note, in the middle of this article there is a box asking us to vote to raise taxes if it would lower the deficit. It’s a trick question. The deficit has gone up every year since 1976 but one. We are
16 trillion in debt. Paying $150 billion a month in interest. Taxes are bringing in 250 billion a month.
By 2020 we will be 30 billion plus in debt, and paying 300 billion a month in interest. Everything else
in our government is irrelevant. Notice neither party is talking about tax cuts, which are only cuts
in the increase of spending. Obama is a fiscal nuclear bomb along with the democrats and the rino
republicans. So you are worried about Rice. She is just one worry I have in a totally corrupt goverment.

      From PRAVDA (excerpts)

“.. O’bomber even keeps the war going along the Mexican border with projects like “fast and furious” and there is still no sign of ending it. He is a Communist without question promoting the Communist Manifesto without calling it so. How shrewd he is in America. His cult of personality mesmerizes those who cannot go beyond their ignorance. They will continue to follow him like those fools who still praise Lenin and Stalin in Russia. Obama’s fools and Stalin’s fools share the same drink of illusion.

Putin could never have imagined anyone so ignorant or so willing to destroy their people like Obama much less seeing millions vote for someone like Obama. They read history in America don’t they? Alas, the schools in the U.S. were conquered by the Communists long ago and history was revised thus paving the way for their Communist presidents. Obama has bailed out those businesses that voted for him and increased the debt to over 16 trillion with an ever increasing unemployment rate especially among blacks and other minorities. All the while promoting his agenda.

We’ll say that these Americans are hostages to the Communists in power. How long will their government reign tyranny upon them?
The question is how long will the once “Land of the Free” remain the United Socialist States of America? Their suffering has only begun. Bye bye Miss American Pie!

We all now know that the most important WH foreign policy is going on “under the radar” in places like Benghazi…. And we need a black, woman bold faced liar, so any accusations can be dismissed as racist or sexist.

I gave the GOP a chance and they blew it. I would love to support the Tea Party, but supporting them now is the same as supporting the GOP. In the beginning, the Tea Party stood for “Taxed enough already” Very simple plateform, NO NEW TAXES AND LESS GOVERNMENT. What is so bad about that? I was a huge supporter of the Tea Party in 2009, but by the end of 2010, you could not tell the GOP from the Tea Party. The Tea Party was formed because NO politician was listening to the people. The republicans pretended to listen in the early stages of the Tea Party, but now they have NO ears again. If the GOP compromises on one issue, amnesty, taxes, etc…, I will never vote republican again, I might not ever vote again. The political machine does what it wants for power, not for right is right.

The only thing I agree with the wimpy McCain & Graham duo is that she is not the problem (necessarily) – it’s the other “top” evil ones in this Empire of the Devil that put her up to it and gave her the lies to promote. But….all it ever is – is Kabuki.

And…that there was NO WAY a real Consv. would EVER be nominated and win. RINO’s hate us & want to rid themselves of us. I still maintain we lost b/c of unprecedented massive fraud via corrupt software in the machines (& voter ID) but mostly by electronic means. They have to “let some” Consvs. win to keep up the facade that they’re more or less “honest”….to hide the fact they are corrupt to the core and getting worse…..Repubs. are the Dems of 30 yrs. ago w/Communist infiltrators; the Dems are mostly Communists/Marxists. OF COURSE they do…..It is all a game to them. Keep Americans distracted…EACH and EVERY one of the CURRENT ADMIN needs to be held for trial for TREASON, THEN, they need to be HUNG BY THE NECK UNTIL DEAD…..But we all know that won’t happen don’t we…THAT is because EVER SINGLE PERSON in CONGRESS is COMPLICIT in the Admins treasonous and ILLEGAL activities. Were they not, something would have happened a LONG time ago!

You are completely correct. We need to have lynchings after trials. Like your profile pic btw.

She’d be excellent! Although, we all know there is disdain in the House for all those who are conservative. I heard Mark Levin say that the RNC never gave her a dime for her re-election, and she was in a tight, tight race! Pathetic…

The GOP would love the majority, but not at the expense of having to ‘deal’ with decent, honest, and strong conservatives!

This is always what the RINOS do, they fold.

Look for nothing to come from any of bathhouses’s scandles because of the RINO’s lip service and corruption. The republican party is a player in our demise.

GOP .. Paper Tigers .. Not one penny to them .. They go to D.C. and become part of the crowd kissing Obama’s behind and the lobbyists. They love the free stuff and the limos..

They will never win the white house or the majority of the Senate, and the house is in jeopardy next time.

Not a penny to the RNC and GOP.

That’s what? Three or four issues that they’re ‘softening’ their stance on since the election?

Interesting how this has totally stripped any mention of Holder and F&F out of the news and any Congressional hearings. : (

I don’t mean this comment to come out racist on my part, but, I don’t think Obama will be satisfied until his entire administration is of a different color than white. (Or pretty close to it) No matter if they are qualified or not. (Eric Holder) “Social Justice” is always on his mind. And lets face it, Obama is clearly racist no matter how hard they try to cover it up. He throws white folks a bone now and then when they tow the line for him, but that’s about it………..

Not racist, just my informed observation.

I think that is a fair observation given the percentage of black voters who supported him and the anti-white / conservative/ Republican rhetoric emanating from this administration…

I don’t think you need to worry about sounding racists .

“The point I was making was not that my grandmother harbors any racial animosity. She doesn’t. But she is a typical white person….”

“So I read the book to help me understand what it is that makes white people so afraid, their demons, the way ideas get twisted around. It helps me understand how people learn to hate.”

“That hate hasn’t gone away”….”white people — some cruel, some ignorant, sometimes a single face, sometimes just a faceless image of a system claiming power over our lives.”

“There were enough of us on campus to constitute a tribe, and when it came to hanging out, many of us chose to function like a tribe, staying close together, traveling in packs. . . It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names”

“I found solice in nursing a pervasive sense of grievancee and animosity against my mother’s race”

“I ceased to advertise my mother’s race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites.’

‘There was something about her that made me wary, a little too sure of herself, maybe and white..’
      Barack Hussein Obama

“Though this nation has proudly thought of itself as an ethnic melting pot, in things racial we have always been and continue to be, in too many ways, essentially a nation of cowards.”
      Eric Holder, Attorney General

Well, now they want us to think she was so dumb at that time, that she only new what Obama told her to say (although the rest of the world knew the truth) but she’s really smart enough to be secretary of state. Well I don’t know about you but I feel much safer already knowing that she’s so much smarter than Hillary. But then Hillary knew when to say no thanks to Obama. Oh well, You be the judge.

Unbelievable – Anyone else (outside the Obama administration) who did such a thing would never even be considered for Secretary of State or any other high position.

I agree-I dumped the GOP after they made McCain the nominee. I have been saying for the last 10 yrs the GOP is gutless. I don’t know about you, but I feel disenfranchised (borrowing from 2000). There isn’t anyone that can stand for OUR values anymore. They (GOP) may SAY they have my values, but are cowards and will not STAND for them.
