‘Real News’: Is Obama Above the Law on Drone Attacks?

Complaints about President Barack Obama’s willingness to conduct drone strikes are not uncommon in conservative circles, but a new report from The New York Times says that when facing the possibility of not getting reelected, the administration had begun to hastily put together a set of clear standards and procedures for all presidents to follow on drone strikes:

Facing the possibility that President Obama might not win a second term, his administration accelerated work in the weeks before the election to develop explicit rules for the targeted killing of terrorists by unmanned drones, so that a new president would inherit clear standards and procedures, according to two administration officials.

Mr. Obama and his advisers are still debating whether remote-control killing should be a measure of last resort against imminent threats to the United States, or a more flexible tool, available to help allied governments attack their enemies or to prevent militants from controlling territory.

Though publicly the administration presents a united front on the use of drones, behind the scenes there is longstanding tension. The Defense Department and the C.I.A. continue to press for greater latitude to carry out strikes; Justice Department and State Department officials, and the president’s counterterrorism adviser, John O. Brennan, have argued for restraint, officials involved in the discussions say.

The irony in the alleged action by the administration is that conservatives have bashed the president’s murderous, not-so-secret drone program for years; making the implied fear from the Obama administration of the power to conduct drone attacks going into Republican hands ridiculous.

Also, showing how far we are from the global attitude during George W. Bush’s time leading War on Terror, the U.N. is now seeking to use drones in peacekeeping missions in Africa. Peacekeeping drones that could be armed.

On “Real News” Monday the panel discussed the Obama administration’s drone attack guidelines plan, and with news of the U.N. use of such procedures, who will decide and enforce if the U.N. use of drones obscures human rights. Hypocrisy aside, is the Obama administration right to seek clearer guidelines for the use of drone attacks? Are they ethical permissible for certain military scenarios?

    So how do you all like Agenda 21? People at back this last election and down people with great ideas . From liberals to republicans . Everyone got there wish. When Romney was nominated everyone knew Obama was gonna win. I mean people did watch some of the republican debates. Ron Paul had to explain to our canidates what was consitutional and what wasn’t.

    Whats wrong with the majority of people is they are afraid. From Republicans to liberals everyone is afraid the goverment won’t help them . I myself find it hiliarous. When dems talk about their best president it is Clinton . When rep talk about theirs it is Reagan.

    Clinton sold us out to China and Reagan tried to balance the budget off of social security. Clinton taught our children to lie and Reagan taught us the poor will pay . Great Presidents . LOL!!

    The only president in the last 125 years that was for the people, even tho he had faults was Kenndy and he paid with his life..

    Do we learn lessons? NO we want our military over in other countries. So people that agree our military needs to be in any country except for America hates our troops.

    I am not gonna blame Obama for anything. I blame you all for playing the game and puttin him in office. You put a canidate out there that is dumb as a box of rocks. He couldnt debate a mentally challenged person Did you all not watch any of the debates?

    Man if you all aree that blind then what you get you deserve 100%.

    sorry, Glenn – but with almost no exception, the Real News on-air staff are equivalists. Not watching. The on-airs claim Libertarianism, or Conservationism, yet excuse leftist garbage all the time – I have grown tired of that crap. We get enough from MSNBC and all the rest of the leftist propaganda machines. Give me Wilkow- who basically says: eff you, you commies are wrong.

    Obama has no issue with sending in missiles to kill both guilty and innocents yet objects to very limited and very safe and controlled “torture” or as we prefer to say, enhanced interrogation to save American lives.

    I am outraged.
    So now the administration wants clear standards and procedures? NOW? Really?
    AFTER they stepped up drone campaigns, started a covert drone war in Yemen, escalated the CIA drone war in Pakistan, and indiscriminately killed and injured civilians all over the place, after they rejected oversight of drone killings, after all the secrecy, after they allow the CIA and military to fire drones even when they dont know the identity of those they are killing, after they already launched six times as many drone strikes as the Bush administration in Pakistan alone, after drawing up plans for nuclear drones, after making plans to more than quadruple Reaper missions by 2016, after making accommodations with Turkey and plans to arm Italy for use of drones, after they’ve been called war criminals…… NOW they want clear standards and procedures when they were ‘facing the possibility that he might not win a second term’? What a bunch of crap. What a stupid reason to now want ‘clear standards and procedures’.
    You know what made me hate Obama… .pictures/videos of little children with their body parts blown off from his drone strikes.
    They should of thought of this a long time ago. Idiots.

      Now I feel quite ashamed of using such a harsh term in saying I hate someone. That may have been inappropriate to say that in such anger. But, I certainly hate these actions.

      In the 60s there were strong sentiments against the U.N. The mantra was Get the U.S. out of the U.N. and the U.N. out of the U.S. Unfortunately it never happened, and we now have a president who is a strong U.N. supporter, gladly moving to put more binding U.N. mandates on us.

    Keep the damned things out of US airspace and definitely keep them from surveilling US citizens!!! As well educated a communist as our Set Of Ears in Chief seems to be he should know the number one rule is never, ever push the people into an extricable corner.

    Red October should be in all the communist texts.

    I haven’t been this ashamed/frustrated with my country since I grappled with fighting in one of its manufactured wars.

    of course he is above the law our president will ask congress to pass something and if they say no/ the people say no he makes it an executive order, even though the executive power is equal to congress and not above, the whole control of the internet that the u.n. is pushing the administration tried to get passed in congress and it was turned down. so obama maid an executive order to the U.N in secret. and if you have noticed most all of the executive order’s like NDAA all say in a crisis or emergency and he has bin pushing these crazy executive orders in a real hurry. while homeland sec is buying up all the ammo and MRE’s and might I ad not using those MRE’s and water in the crisis in the north east. Its starting to add up and its getting scary guys hold on to your hats

    That was a very interesting discussion which opened up a lot of disturbing questions.

    I am reasonably comfortable with America having this ability, even with Mr Obama in office, but the thought of the UN having this stuff is alarming. It has long been a UN goal to have its own standing army, and eventually for it to be the only army (they have said so), but up until now they have been thwarted by the logistics and the reluctance of western nations.

    This technology would put real military power in there hands without those problems. Power that will undoubtably be used by people with no real check on their behaviour, and whose goals are at odds with the western world.

    That is alarming.

    The UN started off as an organisation with the highest ideals and the loftiest of goals. It has been subverted by marxists, and become a VIP lounge for theives and murderers. It is time that the western world stopped funding them and walked away.

    What a stupid question? He hasn’t spent one hour in the WH that he hasn’t exceeded his power!

    This man has been allowed to plow through every asset of our American treasure.

    His wife thinks she has as much power as the President. She doesn’t have this authority. We don’t vote for First Lady’s to destroy are government.

    Ask the question why Congress allows these two addicted spenders to plunder the US Mint? These two should be in Federal Prison for gross theft. Where are the laws that allow these two to plunder the US Treasury????? Who holds the checkbook? I don’t think that endless private spending should be allowed to bankrupt the People’s treasury. Someone like Congress should call the Treasury and put a stop on the checks or wires that these two spongers.

    Ask questions that should be asked.

    Obama is above all our laws since he stole the election! The GOP isn’t going to do anything about it. Obama is going to push everything he can through Congress and if he can’t he will simply executive order it through just as he did the last four years. Nothing changed with this election, and it’s going to be more of the same for the next four.

      I wouldn’t worry too much about that one. Treaties have to be ratified by the Senate and that won’t happen. Executive orders, the NDAA, etc ARE things to worry about. But then again they have to be enforced. Organizations like Oathkeepers are already trying to make sure that doesn’t happen.
