A video has gone viral on the Internet of a student pretending to have a thick Mexican accent for roughly four months, before making the “big reveal” during his final presentation.
Jose Barrientos does not explain how no one knew his real voice — perhaps he had recently moved– but he seemingly fooled everyone in his speech class. Though he is Hispanic and bilingual, Barrientos is “purely American,” according to Gawker, and English is his first language. (UPDATE: The Daily Mail notes Barrientos was a student at a community college, which could explain the lack of familiarity with his classmates.)
Throughout the entire semester, though, he acted like a caricature of what some think of Mexicans as. He brought in a piñata on the day he had to give a presentation on an object that best describes him, and told his classmates he rode a donkey to school.
Then, after four months, it was time for Barrientos to give his last presentation. He joked that he had the “prototype” for a soft drink that makes one’s accent go away, before slipping into his regular, American accent.
Many in the audience seemed both amused and confused, wondering which one was real. Had he practiced all night to get the perfect American accent?

(Photo: YouTube)
“We have to learn how to communicate effectively, people. Because if we don’t, we will all be lost in translation,” ended his speech to loud applause.
Barrientos interviewed his classmates shortly thereafter, and many laughed and said how surprised they were.
“I still think you’re the Mexican guy with the accent,” one girl said. Another encouraged him to go back to “normal,” and stop pretending to do an American accent.
Another looked confused, inquiring: “So…that donkey stuff wasn’t real?”
Watch the entertaining video, below (language warning):
“It really wasn’t planned, I was just sitting in class and I hadn’t talked to anyone yet,” he told the Daily Mail. “During the roll call, I decided to give it a try. It was a do or die moment. If I decided to do it, I know that I had to commit to it and I had to do it.”
According to the Daily Mail, Barrientos is an Iraq veteran and has been pursuing a comedy career.

Nov. 26, 2012 at 10:05pmThe whole purpose of “pulling the wool over everyone’s eyes” was to try to make whites look stupid. In other words, lie to make people look stupid. I mean you could have a white guy talking like Arnold Schwarzenegger to trick everyone into thinking he was Austrian/German. This skit didn’t gain anything. The fact is that most illegal aliens from Mexico refuse to learn English because they want you to learn Spanish to accommodate them and they aren’t planning on staying in the US forever, so why bother? If you”re going to live in the US, speak English. Don’t expect us to learn your language. If I moved to Mexico, I would learn Spanish. I wouldn’t expect them to speak English to make me happy.

Nov. 27, 2012 at 7:36amAAAWWWWW isn’t his little prank just precious and what we all need in our lives to tighten our love and our ties with our superior neighbor whose independence day is celebrated here in the U.S. more loudly and proudly than our own. I know one thing and that is a fact. I bet ‘Mr. my Cadillac is really a donkey’ will not ever go to a Mexican school, enroll and act like an American without literally knowing what it feels like to be treated like a pinata and if he is lucky they will throw him in jail. I understand that immigration is how I am even in this wonderful country and am a strong supporter of it as long as it is done legally. My point is that he talks in his speech class project about caricature of Mexicans. Allow me>>Just take a little time and search all of the FBI, US Marshall, DOJ, DEA, and all of your state and local most wanted sites and start counting baby. Is that his point??

Nov. 27, 2012 at 7:48amI thought he has a great career as a commedian….like David Englessias (however you spell that last name – “I’m not fat, I’m fluffy!”) – Especially when he immitated the girl. And face it, there are stereotypes because there are a majority of people just like that. Take it from a recovering Redneck, there are people who don’t like anyone but the people they grew up with, who are just like them, drink beer, cruise the streets on Friday night, etc. and have never left their home town.

Nov. 27, 2012 at 7:12pmFIRST: It is a community college – they all are idiots and can be duped by anything.
SECOND: Not a very good latino ‘rendition’. He spoke nearly perfect English, never leaving out articles or misplacing them. “We ride a donkey to school” would sound more like “We ride donkey to da school”. Also, he had the mannerisms (moving his hands, making eye contact, moving about the room) that an educated, social person possesses.
My point being that the majority of the class could not identify a lousy impostor is highly pathetic. . .

Nov. 26, 2012 at 8:45pmDoes anyone but me find it incredibly weird that people hold prejudicial views against Mexicans and other minorities?
In the past, Americans have held tightly to extreme hatred of other groups such as the Irish or Catholics. Now it’s Mexicans. Seems like people could have “connected the dots” by now and seen that in American history, hatred of one group or another coming into the United States has been the norm. We once hated this group, now we hate this other group. And always they are going to destroy America, although – odd – that never happens and those groups become accepted as real Americans just like you and me.
The Irish didn’t destroy America and neither did the Catholics or the Japanese.
As Samuel Clements said, “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it rhymes.” It sure does.

Curiously, lefties are intent on repeating the mistakes of Germany, Russia, China, Cambodia, Kenya, etc. etc.

Nov. 26, 2012 at 10:38pmHe did a great job of “Pranking” the class. He seems very talented. I predict he will go far.
But…I absolutely hate to be “pranked”. It feels to me that I’m being lied to..and someone is trying to make a fool out of me. We should always tell the truth and not tease people. People get hurt from pranks/jokes/teasing. It’s probably funny…but not respectful.
My 47 yr old son gets me every single April Fool’s day. The bugger! He always finds something that I will believe…and then pulls the old “April Fools Mom!”
I never pay attention to April 1st. That’s because April 2nd is his birthday and that’s what I’m focusing on. Ironic that my first born/only son who pranks me every Apr 1st…was almost born on April Fools Day. His father said “Hurry hurry so the baby can be born on April Fools Day”. As if I was in control of the matter. But it turns out I was…
I did NOT want my son born on April Fools Day…so I held out until after Midnight (18 minutes after) so he could be born the next day…on the 2nd.

Just imagine if this guy claimed to be a far left liberal, then came out on his last speech to praise conservative ideals. Nov. 26, 2012 at 4:03pmHow do i explain this to you… Take English for example. Australia, the UK, and the US are all English speaking nations yest they each have their own distinct accents. The same applies to Spanish speaking nations. I am Hispanic and 100% American. I am bilingual as well. I grew up in Southern California and NYC being exposed to people from all over Central and South America as well as Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and other Spanish speaking places. They all have their own accents. I can usually tell which Spanish speaking nation someone is from based on their accent. So yeah there is such a thing as a Mexican accent. Just like there is such a thing as an American accent.

Nov. 26, 2012 at 10:56pmI was on vacation in Puerto Rico once (never again) and while in the hotel elevator I heard folks w/hair lighter than my dark brown hair, speaking obvious Hispanic, with blue eyes. There were several of these folks that w/blue eyes, lighter hair, and tanned skin. I asked my friend where these folks might be from…he said they are from Spain…they come her to gamble. My friend said that most people from Spain are light like this. They were the same color as me: I also have blue eyes and naturally tanned skin like my father (who was mostly English).
You cannot always tell a persons ethnicity by looking at them. I was once mistaken about Native American Indians for the same reason. They looked just like me. And everyone thinks I’m Indian…even the Native Indians think I’m a native Indian. But I’m not. I’m English, German, French, Bohemian, and one Grandfather was Norwegian/Dane. My grandmother had to ride in the back of the bus because the bus driver thought she was Indian. She didn’t care if she rode in the back. She thought it was funny. She was mostly German. One just never knows.
