Cops Bust Alleged Drug Traffickers With 105 Pounds of Cocaine in Times Square

Alleged Drug Traffickers Indicted After Caught With 100 Pounds of Cocaine in Times Square

(AP File Photo)

Six alleged drug traffickers have been indicted roughly a month after police nabbed them with approximately 105 pounds of cocaine in the heart of New York City’s Times Square.

The drugs would have been worth about $5 million on the street, the New York Post relates, and if the authorities hadn’t been closely monitoring the situation the gang could have easily passed for tourists in the always-crowded area.  Many of the details of the case are just now emerging, as the case goes to court.

Gawker summarizes:

The bust sounds like something from a movie. One man, [Fernando Alvarado], was arrested after placing a suitcase containing 30 lbs of cocaine in the trunk of a silver BMW and attempting to drive off. Another man, Luis Cuevas-Muniz, loaded 8 lbs of blow in a livery cab, then went back inside to get a second bag, containing an additional 66 lbs. At this point, the state police grabbed two nearby NYPD officers, who assisted in arresting Cuevas-Muniz in the hotel’s lobby. The driver of the livery cab was stopped and arrested a few blocks away.

Two others were arrested inside a hotel room. A third suspect fled into the awful Times Square crowds and was “lost in the holiday decorations-gazing crowds,” a fate which, as Daily Intel points out, probably isn’t much better than being arrested.

The indictment was announced Monday by city Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget G. Brennan and State Police Superintendent Joseph A. D’Amico.

Authorities said plane tickets and other evidence revealed that members of the group had traveled from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to White Plains, N.Y., with a stop in Orlando, Fla.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

What a waste of time and money … YOUR “tax” money … that does NOTHING except provide busy-work for government thugs. Can’t recall the U.S. Constitution mentioning anything about free men getting drunk/drugs if they so choose …

Oh, and just so you know … 2 MILLION AMERICANS HELD PRISONER! But not in Iraq. U.S. Federal & State governments presently hold over 2 million Americans prisoner. (How’s that for “land of the free”?)

And I bet they actually think they did something? All of these drugs were replaced by the time this story made the news, and for the 105 pounds they confiscated, they missed another 1000 pounds in a one mile radius of the bust. Listen, drugs are bad, especially cocaine, but the war on drugs is waste of money and resources. How about law enforcement goes after crimes that produce victims? 90% of all crimes that involve drugs are because of the black market. Anytime there is a want for a product, someone is going to find a way to make a buck supplying it. The only way to reduce the amount of drugs on the streets is to lessen the “want” for drugs, as we can never reduce the supply. This works, how do I know? Look at cigarettes, they are legal, yet there use is down substantially, why? Instead of making it illegal, we convinced people to stop using it.

I’m thinking you need to revisit your “tense” on that statement. Future has long since become past tense. That’s why so many of our young are mindless zombies just wanting their next fix. Used to be a few, but in Ohio I don’t know anyone who doesn’t personally know about a half dozen young people addicted to drugs or illegal pain killers, and I can think of about a dozen right off the bat.

One would wonder how having biden become president would be an answer to prayer, but we’ve got to think that some Americans would worry about having the “lunatic Caesar” in our white house and whether or not a fire in that Cess Pool on the Potomoc would leave America in the same shape as the Roman Empire. If the Coca-Cola of 1885 containing cocaine and the cola nut still existed I will postulate there would have never been a cocaine and crack-cocaine problem in America. Forty years later and approximately a trillion dollars spent on the “drug war” and it is an abysmal failure. The most effective way to solve the illicit cocaine use is to allow the market to supply a legal source for those adults wishing to consume the product. It’s time to let the a market system and capitalism solve the problem.

Then government can rightly so protect the innocent from the underground market.

      @FISH_BONE:

Actually they should. These drugs are no worse than alcohol or over the counter meds which are regularly abused. You can’t stop people from using drugs. The failed ‘war on drugs’ is testament to that fact. What should be done is all drugs should be legalized and regulated just like alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs are. If you abuse the drugs then you suffer the consequences just as people do who abuse alcohol. What adults do is their business. It should only become the public’s business when their resulting actions endanger or harm others or violate the law. Just like what is done with people who drink alcohol. Is that too complicated for you to grasp? We are adults and don’t need big government to wipe our asses and tell us we can’t do something “for our own good.”

Those wanting this country to go to hell in a bandwagon are pro-drug. They are for the most part users themselves. This country should burn every illegal drug and punish those responsible for bringing in drugs to the country and selling thm on the streets to where they hesitate to do it again. As for Ron Paul and Johnson. They have no business in politics, for they are caving in to the druggies. I wish they would take all the drug sellers and ban them to an island where they would run roughshod over their own kind. Those addicted to drugs do nothing but waste away and commit crimes to support their habits. There should be somekind of help for those who really wants to get off drugs, but most of them are putting the drug addicts in charge of the drug rehab places, so how is that workin?

If you weren’t doing drugs, then drug dealers would go out of business…..

As it stands now, then the drug war only reduces supply and eliminates smaller competitors that would otherwise compete against the drug cartels and subsequently reduce their monopolistic stranglehold over the marketplace.

      1. Reducing supply = good for the drug cartels
      2. Reducing the number of marketplace participants = fabulous for the drug cartels!

So what are the two principal objectives of the drug war again?…

What is the other explanation of 100 POUNDS of cocaine?
‘they misunderstood hearinga bout blowing up Times Square?’
‘on their way to a dental convention offering volume discount?’
‘they just found it laying around in the debris from Sandy and thought it was baking powder?’

Justice has been subverted when what is obvious cannot be called such even outside the courtroom.

You are ignoring one HUGE fact. drugs are still freely available on the streets. these busts do nothing to stem the tide. What make a dent? Legalization. Legalization would take the violence out of the equation and bankrupt the drug cartels. It would also be an added revenue stream. How much tax money does alcohol and tobacco bring in each year? Legalization would also make the drugs SAFER for people. Less people dieing from turf wars, tainted drugs, and less people needlessly locked up for simply possessing the drugs.
