Republicans: We’re ‘More Troubled’ by Susan Rice’s Benghazi Comments After Private Meeting With Her

(TheBlaze/AP) — Emerging from a closed-door meeting Tuesday, three Republican senators said they are more troubled than ever with the comments made days after the deadly Sept. 11 attack in Libya by Ambassador Susan Rice, President Obama’s possible choice secretary of state.
Sens. John McCain, Lindsey Graham and Kelly Ayotte met privately with Rice and acting CIA Director Michael Morell for more than an hour on her much-maligned explanations, which primarily consisted of blaming a YouTube video for a “spontaneous” demonstration that spun out of control.
Ayotte said Rice admitted to the lawmakers that her comments in five Sunday talk shows were wrong. However, that failed to mollify the senators, who have talked about blocking her nomination if the president taps her to succeed Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
“We are significantly troubled by many of the answers that we got and some that we didn’t get concerning evidence that was leading up to the attack on the consulate, and the tragic death of four brave Americans and whether Ambassador Rice was prepared, or informed sufficiently, to give the American people the correct depiction of the events that took place,” McCain told reporters.
Here is video of McCain’s full remarks:
Said Graham: “Bottom line– I’m more disturbed now than I was before that 16 September explanation.”
The three said they need more information about the Libyan raid before they even consider Rice as a possible replacement for Clinton.
“I’m more troubled today,” said Ayotte, who argued that it was clear in the days after the attack that it was terrorism and not a spontaneous demonstration prompted by an anti-Muslim video.
Despite lingering questions over her public comments after the Benghazi attack, Rice has emerged as the front-runner on a short list of candidates to succeed Clinton, with Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., seen as her closest alternative.
The strong statements from the three senators clouded Rice’s prospects only two days after Republican opposition seemed to be softening. Rice also planned meetings on Wednesday with Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, who is in line to become the top Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee, and Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine.
Corker said Tuesday that he had concerns with a possible nomination.
“When I hear Susan talk she seems to me like she’d be a great chairman of the Democratic National Committee,” Corker said. “There is nobody who is more staff supportive of what the administration does. That concerns me in a secretary of state.”
Rice’s series of meetings on Capitol Hill will be a critical test both for Republicans, who will decide whether they can support her, and the administration, which must gauge whether Rice has enough support to merit a nomination.
Here is video of Sen. Ayotte’s summary of her meeting with Rice:
A senior Senate aide said the administration was sounding out moderate members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, such as Corker and Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga. Assessing the prospects for Rice before Obama makes any announcement would avoid the embarrassment of a protracted fight with the Senate early in the president’s second term and the possible failure of the nominee.
On talk shows the weekend following the attack, which took place on the 11th anniversary of 9/11, Rice was given talking points that described the attack as a spontaneous protest of the film, even though the Obama administration had known for days that it was a militant assault.
Republicans called her nomination doomed, leading to President Obama vigorously defending her in his first post-election news conference. Since then, GOP lawmakers have appeared to soften their views. McCain, who said earlier this month that would he do everything in his power to scuttle a Rice nomination, said Sunday that he was willing to hear her out before making a decision.
Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, had issued a statement highly critical of Rice on the day of Obama’s news conference. He indicated Monday that perhaps she didn’t know what had transpired in Benghazi on the day of the attack.
“I assumed she had full knowledge of everything that went on. I’m not at all convinced of that now. She very well could have been thrown under the bus,” Inhofe said in an interview. He added that she hadn’t requested a meeting, but he would be glad to meet with her.
Graham’s comments were similar (skip to around 1:22)
White House spokesman Jay Carney said Monday that the administration appreciated McCain’s latest comments about Rice, but wouldn’t say whether the president saw them as an opening to make the nomination. “Ambassador Rice has done an excellent job at the United Nations and is highly qualified for any number of positions,” Carney remarked.
Several diplomats currently serving with Rice said that what she lacked in Clinton’s star power, she could make up with a blunter approach that demands attention and has marked her tenure thus far at the United Nations.
Rice, who at 48 is relatively young, has been known to covet the job for years, but was passed over for Clinton in 2009. Since arriving in New York, many say she can point to a series of diplomatic achievements– most notably the NATO-led air campaign that toppled Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and tougher sanctions against Iran and North Korea.
But Rice has also been criticized – along with other Security Council leaders – for the failure of the U.N.’s most powerful body to take action to end the 19-month civil war in Syria.

Posted on November 27, 2012 at 1:32pmThere are lots of folks saying what “the TRUTH” is about Benghazi. As far as Susan Rice goes, I would be very interested in what she has said in the past about G.W. Bush and his State of the Union speech where he repeated what intelligence agencies had reported regarding Iraq and WMD. If Rice is on the record as criticizing Bush for the repetition of a falsehood that was presented to him by an intelligence agency, then Rice has no credibility after her having repeatedly echoed falsehoods about Libya.

The difference is that GW reported what the intelligence community knew and did not make it up counter to their recommendations as a prelude to go into Iraq. Everyone including allies intelligence resources agreed about the high possibility of WMDs.
In this case, Rice and the administration intentionally changed the intelligence report to promote an agenda. It is still not clear what that agenda was. Who would think that blaming a reaction to video vs. Terrorists plot is better for anything. I think if they said terrorists planned and carried out the operation and we could not react in time to save those lives then everyone would have moved on by now. The question is what is to be gained by blaming a video?

Posted on November 27, 2012 at 7:07pmWe will never get the truth about Benghazi. Our elected officials are deliberately not asking the right questions; just blowing smoke to help thicken the screen.
1. Why was the Ambassador in Benghazi when he was slated to be in Tripoli?
2. Why didn’t he have a full security detail?
3. What was his meeting with the Turkish representative about?
4. When was that meeting scheduled?
5. Outside of the Ambassador and the Turk, who else had knowledge ahead of time the logistical details of this meeting?
6. Why did it take 2 weeks before an FBI investigator could examine the scene?
7. Why did the FBI have to have a State Department escort during their on site investigation?
8. Why was the FBI onsite investigation limited to just a couple of hours?
It’s obvious to anyone paying any attention that the youtube video was a smokescreen, and as long as that’s our focus it always will be.
My own theory:
The US State department isn’t running just guns… It’s leasing (sub-contracting) it’s private military to foreign governments, namely the Turkish government, for BIG money. Selling a foreign country guns is one thing, sub-contracting well trained former Seals and Marines to them is another. Finding out those mercenaries were somehow involved in Benghazi; well that would require a steadfast cover up to the likes the world has never seen.
FYI About all the Benghazi Conspiracy Theories:
This is what happens when truth is hidden.

Posted on November 27, 2012 at 10:15pmENCINOM, I’m surprised you haven’t been banned from this website yet given your inflammatory and un-American opinions.
But here’s what I find interesting. Of all the post on Benghazi on this website, I haven’t seen one yet that acknowledges that our diplomatic staff was killed by terrorists. In spite of the rife anti-Muslim sentiment here, there is not a single word written about the extremists who killed our people. Why? Because there is an anti-Obama angle. From what I’ve seen, when it comes to who people hate most here, they’ll choose hating President Obama any day over a terrorist who kills Americans.
Nor do I see FOX “shining the light” on the fact that Republicans cut funding for embassy security by 129 million in 2011 and 316 million in 2012. Republicans weren’t that interested in embassy security when those cuts were made? But now? Well, of course, they are blaming Obama for the deaths, rather than, of course, the terrorists who killed them.
There is nothing here folks beyond the “fog of war.” In and event like this it takes time to get a coherent understanding of what happened, given the chaotic situation at that time, the conflicting reports of what was happening, and the myriad of different opinions about who was responsible for killing these Americans. How long did it take to figure our who was responsible for 9-11? And why didn’t Bush respond to all the intelligence that an attack was imminent?

How do embassy budgets have anything to do with Obama telling the people on aircraft carrier to stand down from helping the Benghazi Americans? Nothing.
Does the funding for the aircraft carrier come from embassy funding?

If you are going to place blame, place it where it truly belongs….on the Democratic controlled Senate and Obama….who is still campaigning…..when is he actually going to start acting like a president…he has been campaigning for over 4 years now.

Posted on November 27, 2012 at 4:08pmI bet the truth is that the ambassador was told not to go to benghazi because it was a hotbed of post gadaffimilitias[not necessarily al quada] .And that he disobeyed that order from the state department.I bet that the attack on the consulate[not an embassy]was in retaliation- as had been reported and is now conveniently omitted from any narrative- for a drone attack which had recently killed a libyan fighter in yemen ..What is truly calculated and therefore propaganda is the way the entire media and politicians now talk about this anti muslim video as if this was something the government went on a fishing expedition to uncover so they could blame the attacks on benghazi on these videos. As if we’ve forgotten or as if it never happened that on that day the embassy was attacked -there had been demonstrations all over the mid east- in front of US embassies denouncing america precisely because of that video. THAT historical reality is now ommitted from the narrative of that day. CNN was showing us a map of the mid east with flames in capitals because people were protesting the video and blaming the US. That an attack on a consulate in benghazi also occurred would not be beyond the pale to view it as more of this wave of anti americanism due to the video-as it was in cairo and other capitals. And we still do not know that the video had nothing to do with the timing of the attack[to coincide with demonstrations in front of embasssies elsewhere in the mid east]

Already, just since the election, thousands of new people have been laid off their jobs. If this election taught us anything, it’s that we truly have a majority of Americans that would rather stand in line for something free than stand in line for a job. I’m not sure anyone promising jobs and a turnaround in the economy, which is bound to crash through the floor sooner than later, will ever win an election again. So sad, but probably true. We have another pathological liar, Hillary Clinton, as Secretary of State!
Someone that was ordered to testify before a Congressional hearing, and failed to remember anything.
Her testimony was that she was blind deaf and dumb during the stealing of tax payer money in her Rose Law Firm. Her own billing records went missing from her control, only to re-appear on her coffee table after the inquiry was long over. (Oh look, there they are!)

As you see from the election they have managed to turn our society into a bunch of brain dead collective mass who will vote for them no matter what they do. Our school system has failed and are now giving out diplomas for stupidity.
I hear people say it starts at the local level but how can we do that when we have so many politicians who know they can manipulate the uneducated and in some cases the educated voters into putting them into power. The uneducated have figured out that they can vote themselves free money….at least they think it is free money but I think when the **** hits the fan they will be too stupid to realize what is going on.

Though there are PHOTOS of the attackers, we have heard of just one being caught.
They used mortars, which aren’t the sort of weapons carried about, even there.
And Ms. Rice went out and either knowingly lied to the American people repeatedly, or was duped into lying to them repeatedly. The latter would require she did not read the intel provided to her.
