Glenn Beck Clashes With Creator of Crucified Obama Painting Over First Amendment Hypocrisy: ‘This Is So Dishonest’
During his show on TheBlazeTV Wednesday, Glenn Beck resumed his discussion on the First Amendment, particularly how it relates to artistic expression. After much controversy surrounding Beck’s creation of an Obama bobble head doll submerged in a mason jar of yellow liquid (which was actually water with food coloring), he sat down with the artist, Michael D’Antuono, who inspired it all with his controversial painting titled “Truth.”
The painting, which features a crucified President Barack Obama wearing a crown of thorns, led Beck to test the limits of freedom of speech.
D’Antuono argued that he did not intend to portray Obama as Christ despite the veil/curtains, crown of thorns and the implied crucifixion. Beck accused him of not being totally honest about his intentions.
“I do not think he is Christ. I was not trying to convey that,” D’Antuono told Beck, explaining the inspiration behind his painting. “Actually, this painting does not convey my own personal opinions. It is more a mirror reflecting the personal opinions and prejudices, preconceived ideas of the viewer. It’s kind of a sociological experiment.”
“I don’t buy that bullcr– come on,” Beck replied. “How do you not say this is an image of Christ? He is splitting the veil, you know that right?”
In response, the artist said there are so many “interpretations” and the curtains could stand for “creating transparency.”
What about the crucifixion pose? D’Antuono said Jesus was not the only person crucified, further defending his claim that he was not depicting Obama as Jesus.
“Crown of Thorns?” Beck asked.
“It could be. But I’m not comparing him to Jesus,” the artist replied.
“This is so dishonest,” Beck interjected.
Watch part one of the interview below via TheBlazeTV:
D’Antuono admitted he saw the “religious reference” but said he was trying to convey that Obama was “metaphorically crucified by the Right.”
“If he says the sky is blue, they are going to say it’s red. And blue is a communist color anyway. If he says he likes puppies they are going to say, well, he hates kittens,” he said. “So he was being crucified no matter what he did.”
Then Beck applied the hypocrisy test: “Would you think that you would ever paint something of me, that I am crucified by the Left?”
“Well, uh, I haven’t given that any consideration,” D’Antuono replied.
Beck also discussed a few of D’Antuono’s other paintings, including one that features a cop in a KKK hood holding a gun to a black child’s head who is holding a bag of skittles. The painting was supposedly “inspired” by the Trayvon Martin case but did not represent it. Beck said he found it “extraordinarily offensive.”
After some tough, but respectful, debating, D’Antuono later admitted that he did not expect Beck to be such a “reasonable person.”
“Yeah, I don’t know how I’m going to go home and tell my family,” the artist joked. “I expected you to try to tear me apart… I think that’s the reputation you have from the Left, but it’s not true.”
Though they agreed on very little, Beck said they were able to have a reasonable conversation about controversial things.
“There’s not enough people on either side that are seen in the media that can have an honest conversation,” Beck added.
The most surprising part of the interview though came at the very end of the segment.
After Beck mentioned the fact that D’Antuono does not watch his show, the artist replied: “Well, I may start.”
“I say all the time: do not take my word for it,” Beck continued. “Don’t trust the president, don’t trust your favorite politician, don’t trust your favorite host on television. Look it up yourself…We have to teach people to look for things themselves and use critical thinking. Almost all of us are zombified.”
Watch part two of the interview here:
This post has been updated. It also now reflects that the content of Beck’s mason jar was in fact water with food coloring, not beer.
In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. I may very well be the only peson thinking this, but honestly after working 16 hrs each day try to catch up on bills it can be difficult fo a tired man to read such a long story when his wife wants a little attention, he has to take a shower and his kids need help with homework.
I am it trying to put you or your website down but if there was a way, any way, to gve a short synopsis it might help more of us to learn.
I am a person that has VERY limited time to search for the most important stories over at least 12 different web sites.
I am not saying dont postthe entire detailed story, I am saying give people like me a chance to get the IDEA of a story before the commi to reading for so long.
Like the synopsis of any novel on the front and back dust jacket. Help us and we might be able to help you more, and maybe even help ourselves more.

This is no different than the flag bearing a likeness of Obama in place of the stars. Sure, it can be viewed as offensive, but it is not (yet) the flag of our nation. Beck intended for his artistic experiment to be provocative in order to to make the point that we are still free to do such things under the Constitution.

Posted on November 29, 2012 at 12:09amI am surprised the artist was so unprepared for this interview. He did not prepare at all for some very basic and general questions from Beck.
But I gotta say to Beck: kudos for all of these times you ask far left liberals to join you on your show and on your website to talk about their perspectives on things. This guy seems as zombified as one can get, but I very much appreciate those times when your guest liberal/atheist/angry gay man, or whatever, can sit down & contribute civilly to a discussion about politics without degenerating into irrational name-calling and baseless accusations.
These are a first step in our nation coming together instead of always being torn down the political battle lines. I consider myself a conservative but not a brainless zombie as I see sometimes even from the right, (hate to say it but Rush Limbaugh is one of those who screens his calls a little too much & narrows his potential audience also a little too much. I don’t like hearsay when I’m told “what liberals believe” bc it’s often a strawman argument that’s not the truth). If we can’t open our ears and listen to our opponents then we are just as bad as they are; never giving them any voice. You do well to invite these people on to explain their side of things, and you are always fair to them and you give them the floor w/out talking over them. Almost every time they are so surprised by your sincerity in finding a meeting of the minds.

I respect Ron Paul but the person who wrote that article does not understand Glenn Beck. There are plenty of real rodeo clowns out there, yes. There are the Fred Phelps’s and the Donald Trumps of our nation, and a few other very obvious rodeo clowns, with the mysterious source of funding that pays them big dollars for their continued mouth-frothing lunacy.
Anyone who approaches his subjects with the calm intellectual, seeking for unity that Glenn Beck does is NOT a rodeo clown, certainly not in that sense of the word.
I would urge “Jefferson2″ to follow the results of Beck’s newscoverage and ask himself seriously if a true rodeo clown would urge people to “do your own research” and to “please do NOT just take my word for it”? Would a paid distraction urge you to question the validity of what he says? What are his true motives? How often does Fred Phelps urge you to ask him sincere questions? (i.e.: “how do you make money being a full-time moron?”)
or
“How to you make money being a full-time moron who spends $300,000 annually just on travel alone and who’s church is limited to just your immediate family?”
Answer: you don’t. Someone has to bankroll you.
Can you see what I am getting at? Glenn Beck is beyond honest. That’s why he tells us to “question everything”. That is why he tells his audience to “don’t just take MY word for it” and “look into it yourself”. A paid distraction would never urge people to think critically. That’s the

I knew nothing coming out of high school, except for what i was taught. I didn’t think for myself, only brought back things that i heard. then one day i just had a thirst for knowledge, which eventually led me to our real history and science. You would not believe how much our teachings have been watered down, pages of history taken out and/or rewritten with a different view than reality. So much science was not taught, to hide the great many flaws of evolution and how much was theory and how much was scientific fact. We were systematically taught who did terrible things to people, for some reason they left out countless other tyrants from history. How can you believe in those that would purposely teach you only what they want you to know, i’m just saying.

Posted on November 29, 2012 at 1:10amThis is the end game now. I don’t think that any but maybe the most die hard patriots have a clue about how this is going to turn out. The Left and its mantra of “tolerance” and “diversity” and “multiculturalism” was NEVER about IDEALS. The Left has always been and always will be about GETTING WH!T3Y. That is YOU! You foolishly sit there and scratch your heads unable to “get” why the Left LOVES the “Piss Christ” but LOATHES the “Obama in Pee Pee” because it does not make sense according to the LEFT’S OWN RULES. So you chalk it up to hypocrisy. Right? WRONG! The so called “Left” is an engine of a very vocal and efficient ethnic minority. I can’t name names or theBlaze moderators will censor the post, but it is spelled out clearly in the “Culture of Critique” by the genius and very brave academic Kevin MacDonald PhD. America is NOT the first country this hateful minority has destroyed. Please, THINK! The paradoxes and inconsistencies in the Left’s ideology and methodology are all explained if you just “shift your paradigm” the tiniest bit: Leftist humanism and progressiveness is NOT about truth or ideals or even progress, it is about DESTROYING the culture of the White Man. THAT is the TRUTH.

He said, “I didn’t think of him as being persecuted like Jesus.” Okay Mike, you can leave now, interviews over liar.
The painting and LIES that stood out the most surrounded the FoxNews painting of his brother in-law. Try sticking to things that you already know something about so that there is less new work to do. It can be a bit of an addiction, as I’m sure you’ve realised. I have stayed up through to the morning more than a few times. It can be huge fun, though, especially when you drop on to some new stuff.

Asked the right questions– logical questions which brought out the artist’s obvious bias.
Now, either the artist is conscious of this bias, or he is just steeped in the msm and public education view of the world– unable to see his own relative position on the chart of political beliefs.
Probably a bit of both, but what impressed me the most was his apparently genuine surprise at what he saw in Glenn Beck– plus the fact that he was quick to admit it and publicly honor Beck’s character. A great example of where much of the left is coming from– and how to handle them.

Posted on November 29, 2012 at 12:03pmThis artist (Illustrator) misled when he said “It’s not for sale”. A lot of painters nowadays do NOT sell their Originals since GICLEE’S (digital prints) are so accurate and about 1/100th the price the original painting would be. $20K painting can be sold as $ 200 print and artist (in this case especially) will
probably sell many of them this way. SO his statement was dishonest.
He was also dishonest when he claimed it wasn’t about JESUS. DUH, dude. “many of us were born at night—but not last night”
I do like the way that GLENN handled this interview. IF people can talk to each other without the

We need to look for ways we can get along, not for the ways we are different.
I, for one appreciate the diversity in this world and would not want everyone to think like me. Where is the opportunity for becoming polished if we never run into resistance?
I do not have to agree with him, but I do have to give him the right to say what he wants.

My guess is that D’Antuono learned quite a bit from his visit with Glenn. He *might* even start viewing the world through a little more objective, and less left-wing, lens. It will be interesting to see if this is reflected in his art, or whether he’ll continue to focus solely on slamming the “prejudices and preconceived ideas” of the right.

Posted on November 28, 2012 at 9:52pmI too, thought it was refreshing to see people with differing viewpoints have a mature discussion between them. You could see the “light” juuuuuust starting to flicker “on” in this guy’s mind as he and Glenn talked. Maybe his future paintings will reflect this newfound open-mindedness.
Good show today Glenn!

Agreed.
Though many on here are offended by the flag being dipped in (fake) urine, or Obama being portrayed as Christ, at least Glenn had a mature conversation with him.
We Latter Day Saints are offended by South Park and the Broadway play “Book of Mormon”, or “Big Love” or whatever, but we don’t holler about it. We (the Church) ask them politely to not do these things. We explain our reasons calmly. If they don’t listen, oh well, they are free to do as they please. We don’t claim they are the Devil. We may believe they are misguided, but not the Devil.
I may be offended by the painting, or by Glenn’s use of that particular bobble-head, but so what…that’s my problem.
We need to be less offended and have an increased desire to not be offensive. If someone offends us, move on.
I think as a society we are so focused on pointing out each other’s faults that we fail to see what we have in common.
It’s either someone has too many tattoos, the wrong clothing style, too big a house, goes to the wrong church, and on and on and on.
It’s refreshing to see people discuss differences, instead of all the yelling that goes on on the MSM.

Posted on November 29, 2012 at 7:21amThat’s exactly the impression I got–that we were witnessing a person’s eyes just starting to open. I think the artist started off in a “defensive” manner–an honestly why wouldn’t he? He didn’t know what to expect–but then I think he was dumbfounded to learn that his own notions were incorrect…and a flicker of light appeared!

Posted on November 28, 2012 at 9:39pmI watched it and I didn’t like the artist. He is so mentally skewed to the Left’s point of view he can’t even believe the truth when it’s told to him. He mocks his brother in law for watching Fox news and paints a picture of him angry with blood in his teeth. A Conservative can’t have a conversation with the left because they believe the lies and won’t admit the truth. I hope Glenn doesn’t have people like this on again because I can’t watch their BS. They are so stupid. As a Conservative, I want the Truth. I’m also tired of being attacked by the Left on every news channel out there. I’ve gotten rid of many so-called “friends” since these last two elections. I can’t be friends with people who want to take away my freedoms and my money and my job. Socialism/Communism/Marxism is not the way to go!

Posted on November 29, 2012 at 3:29amI agree with everything you said. The “artist” was a typical Leftist Liar. He was the epitome of a DemoNcrat. Everything he said was a lie. I don’t even know if I’d call what he was doing playing coy. He was just out right lying. I’m fine with having a civil conversation with someone of his ilk. But, at least call him out. The Trayvon painting showed the painters deep-seeded racist motivations. I have not stake in what happens one way or another to George Zimmerman. However, all the people calling for his arrest don’t seem to know the law. Umm, it’s “innocent UNTIL proven guilty.” Sure, question him, but saying he needed to be arrested is just giving credence that to the Loons who automatically think it was racially motivated.
I thought everything the “artist” said was a lie. I will not watch another clip from any site promoting similar stories when we already can see their motivation(s).

Posted on November 29, 2012 at 2:41amActually, i was wondering why Glenn didn’t point out to the artist that his painting of the guy with the FOX News logo reflecting in his glasses should portray an inverted image of the FOX logo unless his subject was watching TV through a mirror.

Posted on November 28, 2012 at 9:24pmArtist? yes, one would have to admit there is talent. Does he have a right to depict whoever in whatever manner? yes again. And now I have the same freedom to express comment on his nefarious work of so -called art.
His few minutes of fame will come to a screeching halt when his welcome is worn thin. His ‘perception’ of Obamas persecution is both self serving and laughable, especially in the eyes of an adoring media, who already knows he is godlike, so no surprise here. If Obama had the mettle of a man and president, he would rebuke they (from the kindergarten singers to fawning teens, to mindless adults) who give him a messianic complex, but alas he cannot, he needs the warm coals that stoke his massive ego.
So again, I find no fault with the artist depiction in the sense that he is allowed, but I will not have had the chance to embed a little poetry and rambling of thought against him, and the boyking he is portraying.

Posted on November 29, 2012 at 9:42amThis “artist” is garnering more attention than he deserves. Just look at his choice of subjects; they are extremely juvenile and angst-ridden. He is clearly not talented enough to use subtely in his work; instead, he hammers you over the head with his imagery so there’s no mistaking his meaning. Glenn is right, Mr. D’Antuono is being dishonest… by calling himself an artist.

Posted on November 28, 2012 at 9:23pmI really enjoyed this show. It was so refreshing to see two people who have different beliefs have a civil and honest discussion. I may not agree with Michael’s views but I respect his right to free speech and he was willing to come on Glenn’s show and have an adult conversation. It made me smile. I saw a flicker of understanding from Michael. He’s just not there YET.

Posted on November 28, 2012 at 9:45pmAfter D’Antuono admitted that he expected Glenn to tear him apart, I had a greater respect for him. After all, he came on the show anyway. It is no wonder he hedged his answers at the beginning so much. I thought the second segment was a much more enlightening exchange, as he let down his guard and had a real discussion.

Posted on November 29, 2012 at 12:05amWhat was honest about that artist? He lied over and over.
Only honest thing was when Glenn tried to school him on BO”s communist family & mentor
he said , no I did not know that. Hope he will take his leftist blinders off and listen to the truth
for once.

Posted on November 28, 2012 at 9:21pmI actually thought the conversation went pretty well. Beck called him on some stuff but I think this guy was preparing for an all out attack on himself and was posturing, Once he realized he wasn’t going to get attacked, he actually opened up a bit and the conversation was quite informative. Maybe he will view things through a different lens. If so, I am sure the left will quickly throw him under the bus.

Posted on November 28, 2012 at 9:19pmI thoroughly enjoyed this interview and how it evolved. Mr. D’Antuono was clearly expecting to be “bear trapped” by Glenn, and so hedged his answers at the beginning. It wasn’t until the end of the first segment, after Glenn had thanked him for being on the show, that he let his guard down. The exchange was caught just before commercial break, as he told Glenn that he wasn’t who he expected him to be. I was very pleased when Glenn changed the plan and kept D’Antuono on for further discussion after the break. It was very interesting to see a “real” discussion with a person who had gotten all his info from MSNBC, to see his perspective change as Glenn politely engaged him in real discussion. I only wish Glenn had looped back and asked him again about the painting. I think that Mr. D’Antuono would have been a bit more forthright, now that he understood that Glenn wasn’t trying to sandbag him.

Posted on November 28, 2012 at 9:18pmDishonest is the nicest word I would use for the man. And what is the point of lying? By admitting he perceives the right crucifying Obama, he admits he is trying to show Obama as Christ, an innocent/good man mocked and murdered by his enemies. I am glad Beck at least managed to shake his expectations some.

Posted on November 28, 2012 at 9:15pmWhy isn’t Glenn wearing some of his $129.99 pairs of blue jeans? I wonder how pastor Warren feels about this painting? Maybe Glenn should have him on and Beck could show him that glass of urine with our president in it. Next time Beck goes to Israel he should bring that urine with him and show how classy and caring an individual Glenn is. He’s such a star!

Posted on November 28, 2012 at 9:25pmThe guy has talent, granted. The thing that bothered me the most is him not knowing about Obama’s upbringing. It is the one thing that drives me nuts about Obama supporters. I can call him a Marxist and they say where’s the proof. Look at his upbringing, did you read his book, look at who he is surrounded by, LISTEN TO HIM? They havent and they wont. It is a total ignore of the facts.

Posted on November 28, 2012 at 10:08pmSKIMMER…..With the big gains the left has made in this country in the last few years, it is a no-brainer that there will be a controversy about the culture and the politics. We LIVE it, every day. What I don’t get is the problem we have with communication. I would love to get it ALL out in the open. If Skimmer wants Glen Beck to eat crabapples, he should say so. If I think Bah Rahk is a devil, I should say so. And I do, often. That is freedom of speech.
So, in this spirit, I will say that most people don’t know what the issues in this country really are.
I BELIEVE that the left is dishonest and can’t divulge the real agenda, or their intentions, and you seem not to care about that, which makes me think you are also a communist and want to see this country absorbed into the NWO. So screw you and your opinions.
