Stunning Video Purportedly Shows Syrian Rebels Shooting Down Military Helicopter
Syrian rebels say they have shot down a military helicopter near Aleppo, and stunning video of the event is now surfacing on the internet. If true, he surface-to-air missiles mark a significant advancement in the rebels’ military capabilities.
The New York Times relates:
In one video, a utility helicopter that appeared to be a Russian-built Mi-8 can be seen banking in a slow left turn and then being hit squarely near its engine by a fast-moving projectile rising at a sharp angle from below. Another video showed what appeared to be the same helicopter moments after the strike. The crippled aircraft manages a partly controlled descent in spreading flames, as a voice off-camera shouts, “sarook,” or rocket, before it strikes the ground and explodes.
In recent months, rebels have used mainly machine guns to shoot down several Syrian Air Force helicopters and fixed-wing attack jets. In this case the thick smoke trailing the projectile, combined with the elevation of the aircraft, strongly suggested that the helicopter was hit by a missile.
Rebels hailed the event as the culmination of their long pursuit of effective antiaircraft weapons, though it was not clear if the downing was an isolated tactical success or heralded a new phase in the war that would present a meaningful challenge to the Syrian government’s air supremacy.
Debate has raged since the start of the insurgency over whether Western and Arab nations should provide Syria’s rebels with portable antiaircraft missiles, often called Manpads. Some fear that such weapons could be smuggled away from the conflict and later used by terrorists against civilian airliners.
Here are some still shots from one of the videos:

The alleged rebels can be heard yelling “Allahu Akbar!” over and over, sprinkled in with “We hit it!” according to Al Jazeera.
The New York Times continues:
Andrew J. Tabler, a Syria analyst at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, called the use of the missile “a big deal, but not a surprising deal,” and said it appeared to confirm one of two things: weapons seized from bases are functional, or that there has been truth to the quiet talk that after the recent meeting in Doha, Qatar, to reorganize the Syrian opposition into a new coalition, outside countries would provide more sophisticated weapons to the rebels.
Since that, several Arab countries and France have recognized the coalition as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people, perhaps making it more politically palatable to provide rebels with the weapons.
In interviews over the past months, Syria’s rebel have described a concerted effort to acquire and master such weapons. Last month, a rebel commander in Idlib said that he had received a small quantity of Soviet heat-seeking missiles dating to 1974 and that one had been used to shoot down a helicopter. That downing could not be independently confirmed.
He also said his fighters had seized numerous heavy machine guns from government bases and that more weapons had been delivered from Libya via Qatar. He said rebels’ tactics and skills were improving. “They know how and where to set or position the launchers,” he said.
Here are the videos, via The Washington Post:

Remember in 1979 when the CIA trained and funded Bin Laden to raise an army of rebels to drive the Soviets out of Afghanistan. He won, then formed Al Qaeda in 1988. Yes, they attacked us later, having made their goal to drive US forces out of the Middle East and form a Caliphate. And then a branch, Soldiers of Sharia, attacked and burned our safe house in Libya and killed our Ambassador just after the Turkish representative left the dinner meeting there. Last guns out to be delivered to Syrian rebels? No more use for our Libyan Ambassador by Al Qaeda, who plans a Caliphate in N. Africa too? “The enemy of my enemy is my friend?” An unholy alliance.

Every time the CIA & Afghanistan is brought up, someone says we armed Bin Laden?
Which cause me to re-read “Charlie Wilson’s War” by George Crile. I’ll re-read some other sources too & find new ones.
Weapons did got to Gulbuddin Hekmatyar. He had no tribal support & so the Pakistani Intel people felt that they could control & use him. A lion’s share of American aid went to him. He is Anti American. So Is America guilty of providing aid to him? Yes.
Nowhere but nowhere, do I find where we set Bin Laden up or provided him any aid. He was a rich boy with inherited money, who was a Johny come lately to Afghanistan. Besides his own money, Saudis sent a lot of money to various groups. No American money was needed to get him to Afghanistan to keep him there for the little if any fighting he did.
I don’t think he got there until 3 to 7 years after the CIA was funding the mujaheddin.
The British favored Ahmad Shah Massoud. They supplied him as best they could.
We supplied several groups thru the Pakistani ISI with overmuch going to the aforementioned ogre Hekmatyar.
Why do you persist in saying Bin Laden? Did Tom Hanks say it in the movie “Charlie Wilson’s War”? Are you paid to say that? Have you read extensively & can link stuff that alleges or proves it?

Posted on November 28, 2012 at 11:11amI believe that Ambassador Christopher Stevens might have been involved in Arms smuggling similar to that described in “Charlie Wilson’s War” The CIA bought manpads from Egypt, a rogue polish general & others.
Putin & the Russian intelligence services knows what we are doing. They paid the jihadis to d something they wanted to do. Russians did it to at least temporarily stop the arms pipeline to the Syrian rebels, fire a shot across our bow & as vengeance (payback for Afghanistan)
Some manpads were destroyed to honestly prevent civilians airliners form being shot down & for show to the press. But Benghazi was about arms smuggling.
Assad will fall Read Debkafile. Back in January they predicted an Assad win. However with the fall of the M1 radar station, I believe there are too many countries lined up against Assad. To get the radar & airfield, a while brigade was defeated. That is serious. The M1 rada station was of more concern than the M2 or M3. The Isreaelis, Brits, French, U.S. provided intel, planning & logistics to take that airfield.
It is looking bad for Assad unless Hezbollah & Iran surge to prevent it. Look for Obama to take a victory lap. Question is will worse monsters take over?

This still might blow up in the left’s face when Iraqi weapons are found in Syria. No doubt the left will argue that all of them are Syrian in manufacture & not a one of them came from Iraq. They’ll fight hard on that one & hope that it blows over & then get revenge on any that opposed them later

There are at least 3 different factions among the Rebels. Those would be “The Muslim Botherhood”, Al Qaeda, & Free Syrian Army (FSA). Arming the FSA might not be a bad ideal.
If Assad were to fall, it would be better that he fall and someone who likes us take over than someone who hates us.
You can question who likes us “all day long” & whether they would be effective. But a choice we must make. To not Choose is to make the default choice. People do not hate people who attack them. At time they hate those who did not help them. So again to not make a choice is to still make one.
One can also question whether Assad falling is better or worse than what might replace him.
Assad falling would seriously harm Iran’s ability to supply their stalking gorse & hunting dog, Hezbollah. It would seriously harm their strategic position viz-a-viz other Muslim regional powers and their ability to attack the U.S. directly or via terrorism.
It is worth debating if Obama favors backing the Muslim Brotherhood (MB), cuz they are the majority. We might honestly help the MB, but they might in no way be grateful and turn around & harm us in the future.
Assad was the bast/rd that assisted Al Qaeda infiltrating into Iraq & killing U.S. Soldiers. 1 or 2 thousand less GIs would have died except for Assad.
