‘Terrorist’ Breaks Into Israeli Mother’s House With a Knife and Pipe…and She Takes Him Down With Martial Arts

Those who follow Middle Eastern affairs likely remember the horrifying tragedy of the Fogel family in Itamar, Israel. In March of 2011, five members of the same family, including a sleeping baby, were murdered in their beds by Palestinian terrorists. In Gaza, they celebrated the “heroic” act by handing out sweets.

On Monday, an Israeli mother of two in the in the small town of Sde Avraham faced a similar situation, but forced a very different result.

Israel National News relates:

Yael Matzpun was sleeping in a room with her four-year-old daughter and two-year-old son when she was awoken by heavy footsteps in the hall. She knew that her husband, an IDF officer, was not due at home.

“Suddenly I saw a terrorist in a kefiyyeh [head scarf] standing opposite me,” she told Maariv. “I decided that if I didn’t fight, he would murder me and my four children, there would be a massacre like in Itamar, where the Fogels and three of their children were murdered in their home.”

The terrorist turned on the light and said something in Arabic, she recalled. He had a knife in one hand and a metal pipe in the other. Suddenly he lunged at Yael, stabbing her in the face and shoulder.

What the terrorist did not know is that Yael is an athlete trained in Krav Maga, Israeli military hand-to-hand combat. She used her skills to drive him back and into the bathroom, and locked him in. At the same time, she pushed her young children to safety.

Once the terrorist was locked away, she called for help. IDF forces arrived only to see the terrorist escaping through a bathroom window. They gave chase and attempted to arrest him, but were forced to open fire when he refused to drop his weapons. The terrorist was killed. [Emphasis added]

Sde Avraham is in southern Israel, near the border with Gaza. However, Yael’s father was not at all concerned about his daughter’s safety.

“The terrorist fell into the wrong woman’s hands, from his point of view,” he said proudly, according to Israel National News. “Even when she was a young girl, she would hug me like a vice… After she learned Krav Maga she was always able to take down thugs.”

I have always said that the best way to train your daughters is to train them to fight. If all women were trained to kill their attackers, or at the minimum, be able to maim their attacker to the point that he or she would rather surrender to the police, than face their victim again. I would suggest that we train all our children how to defend themselves to the death.

  The Israelis make military service mandatory for every young person. They give them the training in the military to be able to defend themselves from everyone. If we want to care so much about “women’s rights”, the first thing we should do is teach them how to fight like Israeli women, instead of handing out free contraceptives.

Now you know why my daughter is in martial arts. Just got her black belt. ALL women need to know how to protect themselves, and not just in Israel. A woman can be a victim of violence, no matter where they live. Give them a fighting chance, so to speak.

Martial arts is not a sport where you have to take up all of your available time, and yes they can still be girly girls when not in class. Much of it is practice on your own time. Please consider it for your own children. In a few years a girl can go from clueless to confident. One class, one day a week and some practice at home could make the difference between being hurt and walking way.

  I applaud you for having your daughter take Martial Arts… I teach Seven-Star Kung-Fu and I always tell my students that once they have completed my training, to go out and learn another style (you can never be to prepared after all).
  
  I suggest that now that she has a black-belt in one discipline, that she go out and start again with something else… And if possible, maybe you should join her (if your health permits that level of activity…)
  
  Always good to train in a weapons heavy style, as weapons are found everywhere, and being able to use them makes an individual extremely dangerous…

  Only problem is that a lot these dōjōs (you typically find them in strip malls) are completely worthless for teaching people how to actually fight. They are there to basically sell meaningless black belts. They can be good for exercise, but pointless and oftentimes detrimental in an actual “fight for your life” situation.
  
  Going into a fight with undeserved confidence can be a lot more dangerous than going in with no confidence at all. Someone who thinks higher of their own abilities than is reflected in reality is just asking to get hurt or killed.
  
  These are some things to look out for that will clue you in to a potential “McDojo”
  
  1. Child black belts. Seriously, if you see lots of teenagers or pre-teens sporting black belts then you should turn right around.
  
  2. Mandatory contracts. Lots of dōjōs require these and that is almost always a red-flag.
  
  3. Set schedules for advancement.
  
  4. And one of the biggest, imo, is whether or not they employ full contact sparring. Until you have done this there is no way to be able to properly use your fighting skills because you don’t know how much force is required to do damage and you’re not used to absorbing punches that haven’t been pulled.
  
  There are others, but I don’t have room to type them all out. Honestly, when someone tells me that they have a black belt my first instinct is to chuckle at them because it’s very likely that they were the product of a black belt assembly line and have no true

  Tae Kwon Do is a Sport. Martial Arts are a way of Life. Anything you can do to disuade someone else from preying upon you is, essential.

  Kupo has it right except for item 4 in his list: full contact while learning karate is a no-no. I took Shodokan karate for six months from a USAF champion (class was at a junior college in CA in a gym), and it was a VERY serious endeavor. Contact was forbidden, but we were ALWAYS to use full force, coming as close to our partner as possible (snap the gi). Shodokan tournaments have the same rules. Contact means disqualification. And Shodokan black belts take YEARS to achieve.
  
  I took this course when I was 35 and was astonished at the level of confidence and the incredible reflexes that I gained, not to mention the strength and flexibility. After six months of 3x/week classes, I was so well-trained that I didn’t need to go any further. I’m 71 now and still retain everything I learned, though my kicks are no longer above my head. I’ve never had to use my skills … it could be that my training gave me the look of confidence that a bad guy avoids. I do think that all children should take a serious self-defense course such as this. Bullying would disappear. I believe it’s mandatory in South Korean schools. You don’t want to mess with a South Korean!

  KUPO —- I would add that discipline and respect should also be present ( If kids are running around, talking while the instructor is trying to teach, not paying attention, etc. ) that would also be a bad sign. I took tae kwon do and the true Korean master did not put up with crap, he would stop class and call you up and then slap your face or bust your **** with a bamboo pole in front of everyone. He was a short man with garlic breath, but you would not mess with him. Our school always took the trophies at a tournament.

  Good for you and your daughter. Karate teaches disipline and self confidence. Women’s styles are different from Men’s style, but never the less good. I am a third dan in Okinawan Shorin Ryu. I taught semi contact, but eventually students must be taught full contact, or they will only use semi contact in a real situation. I saw that happen, once.

Truly a sad commentary when we view this and the story about the neighborhood robber meets 40 cal. as good and joyous news. Speaks volumes about where we are. Sadly, a younger generation does not see or feel this. But alas, I was also once a mind full of mush.

  I seem to have expressed myself terribly. Kudos to the non-victims. The intruders did get what they deserved. Having to live with their actions (if they ever develop a conscience) will be their only chance at salvation. I meant really good news, like someone helping their neighbor as opposed to attempting to rob them or terrorize them in this case. I mean, if my neighbor told me he had to shoot an intruder the other day I don’t think I’d say that’s fantastic. I might say I’m glad you’re OK and the slime got what he deserved but I don’t think I’d be happy about. Relieved or thankful for his presence of mind. But not celebratory.

  Eternal: it’s not WHERE we are as a species, it is WHAT we are! We are ANIMALS! And MOST of us are civilized, but ALL of us are capable of defending ourselves if cornered, some far more than others, unfortunately, as therein lies the problem, with martial arts as an excellent solution. A pistol is a nice addition, when possible, but the self-defense course will do for the vast majority of situations. If self-defense is NOT a natural act, please explain the actions of a cat or dog or lion or mouse or ANY animal when cornered. If you don’t know yet, corner one and find out.

  Classical Lib: speech can indeed be very dangerous, but that’s not saying it can necessarily be forbidden, though some such speech CAN be. What would be forbidden dangerous speech? Saying aloud or in print that you wanted to do ill to Our Dear Leader, for example. This is ILLEGAL and will get you an FBI visit within two hours GUARANTEED if you say it in an email or on the phone (guess who’s listening). It happened to a young teenager in ENGLAND and to another more recently in Montana. And, yes, the FBI does have agents in England.

  It’s not just simple burglary because of the intent of the attacker. A burgler generally breaks in to steal things. Someone with a head scarf, a knife in one hand and a pipe in the other probably isn’t there for a widescreen TV and an Xbox. He’s there to murder, just the same as the previous attack that was mentioned in the story. You need to call a spade a spade, especially in that part of the world where terrorism is a daily thing. It’s a kefiyyeh, & the checkered pattern of some of them actually became a symbol of nationalism for the Palestinian terrorists.

  Hmmm….wearing a Kefiyyeh, speaking Arabic (not the language of the homeowner, so not trying to communicate with her), carrying a knife and pipe (weapons), seeks out homeowner to attack her.
  
  Lets contrast it with a typical burglar…..wearing all black, speaking Hebrew to the property owner (don’t shoot), caught carrying homeowners stolen things while trying not to be found out by homeowner.

Well done. though I suspect she was gentler than she might have been. If she drove him into retreat, I suspect she could have done far worse. My only regret is that the terrorist’s body will be disposed of with more respect than it is due. He deserves to be hung naked from, oh, say a bridge or pole, perhaps after being beheaded. But then, the Israelis are reasonably civilized, so it’s just a vain wish.

  Sign up for a class. I met with an instructor yesterday. He teaches a modified Krav Maga technique for seniors. He told me that he sees a market niche in the baby boomer population. I am 64 and not in the best shape. I figure I can get in shape and learn a skill instead of just going to senior aerobics.

Krav Maga should be taught to the entire Israeli population, in fact, Americans would be better of for knowing the techniques. My grandson was taught as a youngster, here in America, and he taught me some of the moves. Most effective, IMHO.

  you may not have noticed, but there are plenty of whites who demonstrate the same “give it to me, I deserve it without working” mentality you are decrying in other races. Using skin color as the sole criteria is stupid. The best blacks, latinos, asians, etc. are worth more than most whites. It’s those with the right ethics who are at risk, not the right skin color. My form of racism is to divide people into humans, and into bipedal apes. And it’s attitude and actions, not skin color, that differentiate the two.
