‘Welfare Nation’: The Sad Truth

Should We Be Concerned About the Expansion of the Welfare State? This Presentation Says Yes

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., Speaker of the House John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., speak to the media at the White House Nov. 16, 2012, in Washington. (Roger Wollenberg/Getty Images)

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich during the Republican presidential primaries often referred to President Barack Obama as the “food stamp president,” a charge that was met with piercing and outraged cries of “racism!”

“Over here you have a policy which, with Reagan and me as speaker, created millions of jobs — it’s called paychecks. Over here you have the most successful food stamp president in American history, Barack Obama,” Gingrich said.

Supposed “racist dog whistles” aside, it should be noted that Gingrich is not the first person to voice concern over the expansion of our so-called “welfare nation.”

But is this concern warranted? That is, is the growth of the welfare state really something we need to worry about?

Considering the fact that for every 1.65 employed persons in the private sector, one person currently receives welfare assistance and the fact that for every 1.25 employed persons in the private sector, one person currently receives welfare assistance or works for the government, we’d say “yes.”

“[It] is now more lucrative — in the form of actual disposable income — to sit, do nothing, and collect various welfare entitlements, than to work,” Zero Hedge grimly notes.

As the below chart from Gary Alexander, Secretary of Public Welfare, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, confirms, staying on government welfare has indeed become a lucrative gig for many.

The single mom is “better off earning gross income of $29,000 with $57,327 in net income & benefits than to earn gross income of $69,000 with net income and benefits of $57,045,” Alexander explains.

Should We Be Concerned About the Expansion of the Welfare State? This Presentation Says YesNow while some may want to avoid this discussion (and others prefer simply to yell “racism!”), facts are facts and the choices are clear: “… either [be] on the left side of minimum US wage, and [rely] on benefits, or move to the right side at far greater personal investment of work, and energy, and … have the same disposable income at the end of the day,” the Hedge notes.

Here’s a chart illustrating the burden welfare places on current taxpayers:

Should We Be Concerned About the Expansion of the Welfare State? This Presentation Says YesMost troubling is the fact that many in Washington look at the above and say to themselves, “Hey, let’s raise taxes,” instead of, “Hey, maybe we should do something about welfare costs.”

Why is this so troubling?

Because, as mentioned elsewhere on TheBlaze, higher and unreasonable (see France) tax rates usually lead to an exodus of cash and manpower. What do you suppose will happen once burdensome tax rates chase out all the money and high-income earners? The money may leave, but the cost of welfare won’t.

If Washington has its heart set on raising taxes on the wealthy (which it does), that’s one thing. But D.C. has to realize that it must also address entitlement reform — or else things are about to become a whole lot more unsustainable.

Bottom Line: Again, just to be clear, for every 1.65 employed persons in the private sector, one person receives welfare assistance. For every 1.25 employed persons in the private sector, one person receives welfare assistance or works for the government.

There are 110 million privately employed workers and 88 million welfare recipients and government workers. The former’s numbers are shrinking while the latter’s are growing.

Here’s Alexander’s full presentation:

welfare failure

There is no Truth here – We must not be able to handle the truth. Tell me when Glenn, his Staff, or any Conservative Talk Show Host has ever told us any of the following:

How much does it cost Annually to send out “JUST ONE” Welfare Recipients Checks – Answer $80,000 per Recipient – you know Welfare recipients do not receive that much.

How Many Obama Phones did Obama give out – Who Knows – I can’t find one Conservative in Congress or one the air to tell me. I heard one figure that it was 10 Million Obama Phones.

$10 Million Obama Phones X “How the F$ck Much per month does it cost American tax payers” $20 Dollars, $30 Dollar each per month. Who knows. My guess $200 per phone per month.

Where is Reagan – he would have told us.

How many Executive Orders has Obama signed in office – I heard that it cost $200 Million to implement just one Executive order – I DON’T KNOW – Cant find a single so called Conservative to tell me – Oh I wish Reagan was here. He did the work Conservative Talk Show and Politicians don’t do today.

Reagan never demonized the Recipients of Welfare – he Demonized the Govt Waste that implement it. That is how you win an Election.

Conservatives Talk Show hosts love to use the words “Welfare Reform” but they don’t even know what it means – I will Never Ever vote for a Politician that wants to cut one penny from a Recipient. But I will kiss his b$tt on Broadway if he will go after the Waste in Government and expose it. Wow W

You are totally brainwashed and lack any common sense. You should get some new lefty talking points , because the race card and the attack on women is getting old. How does that old saying go? You tell a lie long enough you start to believe it. I think you are actually starting to believe the nonsense you spew.

This is nonsense. For any of you who really believe it’s not, quit your job and give it a try.

You won’t though, not because of your work ethic, but because you know somewhere in that brain of yours that there is no way you could pay your mortgage or rent on government benefits and feed yourself and you family on food stamps. You know that’s a lie.

There may be more people receiving government assistance since the Great Depression. That’s probably true given that after seven years of the Bush administration, two unpaid for wars, unpaid for prescription benefits, tax cuts that ballooned the deficit and deregulation, the economy collapsed and the US saw the second worst contraction in the economy in American history. Since the US economy collapsed over a year before President Obama was sworn into office, you ought to question your belief that Obama caused it or that more tax cut for the rich will improve the situation given that the Bush tax did absolutely nothing to improve the economy.

And, somebody help me, what does that graph above mean and how can you have a higher net income than gross income?

@ Sendthemeteors, I would be glad to tell you how you have a higher gross income than a net income. First off, your “gross” income is how much you earn in a given year. For a welfare recipient making $15,000 per year, their “gross” income would be $15,000. Now follow me here, I think this is where you are getting tripped up. “Net” income is that income that you are left with after ALL adjustments have been made. For us actually paying taxes, these adjustments are negative and the gov’t steals our money right out of our paychecks at the point of a gun. However, for a welfare recipient, these adjustments are in the positive and include such things as “free” medical care (god I wish we would do away with the word “free” in our language because NOTHING IS FREE!), food stamps, and things such as tuition assistance and subsidized housing costs.

Now, to address your more overarching topic… How is it that you really think we are on the right path when our government robs from one group of people and gives that ill-gotten gain to others? Only racists, keynesians, and eugenicists (which is just a slightly different type of racist) would ever think that it is fine to do such a thing. Oh, and thieves. Thieve have no problem with this either. You see, when you are charitable with your own money, you are committing a good deed. When you voluntell others at the point of a gun to be charitable, you are deserving of a bullet to the temple.

Yes, let’s cut off all of the govt. assistance programs and then the nonexistent jobs will suddenly appear. What do you guys think “recession” means and what exactly do you propose we do to end it? The welfare problem was not here when Bush was in office because we were experiencing an economic bubble that quickly burst.
Right now we are exporting jobs while at the same time importing people, usually in the form of mass immigration. We can not handle more people & fewer jobs at the same time.
End NAFTA and GATT and keep American coporations frome exporting all of our jobs just so they can pay some workers in India or China a dollar per day when U.S. minimum wage would require they pay a legal American so much more.
This isn’t rocket science. We need to keep the jobs here, keep all the new people trying to get in OUT, stop exporting all of our jobs while also cutting govt. aid.
Don’t feel sorry for a single U.S. billionaire bc his long held tax cuts will run out. Most of them hire illegals or build factories overseas, paying a buck per day to each foreign slave they own, to get to where they are.
Glenn, I just defended you on another article but this is nonsense. I don’t defend the rich CEOs of a starving country drowning in massive debt as they keep on hiring their slaves overseas. I don’t like communism, which is where our nation is clearly headed, but this idea of a “free global market” means every hard-won employee safeguard is thrown out the window.

NAFTA and GATT were both introduced during the Clinton presidency, and also written into law then. Not a single Republican has ever even suggested ending it, even now after this very liberal idea of mass global trade has destroyed our country.
Bush cut taxes to the top 1% of “earners” (foreign factory slave owners) at the same time he declared 2 extremely expensive wars which included the cost of building up Iraq after discovering no weapons of mass destruction.
Go ahead and scream at all your lazy millenial children and grandchildren to “get a job!” but don’t be surprised as they continue to whine “there aren’t any!” because guess what: there aren’t any.
We need to stop all new immigration in it’s tracks and tell corporate owners that they have to hire all of their workers in the same country they build their business. Let them sell in India if they want to hire India. Let them sell in China if they want to hire China. I only buy American. So should you.

More money has been spent on things such as bail-outs and foreign aid, than this. We need to go over the entire government spending with a fine tooth comb and cut out anything that isn’t necessary for defense of our nation, and basic government needs. First, they ought to cut the paychecks of those in Washington, as they are not doing their jobs. Put them all on minimum wage; I doubt they would be affected as much as one thinks. They already recieve free housing, free transportation, free meals, free med benefits, etc, etc, etc. They also take more vacation time than any private sector job would allow. The whole debt is a design to bankrupt the USA. All of the bail-outs and waste is appalling and sickening! Making people work, is but a small step in the right direction. We ought to be teaching entrepeuneral skills or trade skills, beginning in middle school.

You can say that they take a disproportionate amount of money, but blue states often receive considerable federal funds and still manage to bury themselves in 100 billion dollar debt. Take California, funds and economic stimulus from multiple military bases, funding for prisons, funding for highways, funding for a number of corporations, and still in the economic crapper. Say the reds take more, but at least we use it better. Feds give money for a lot of things, and the austerity measures will hit everybody. I’d be more worried about the college students, they aren’t ready for what comes after that.

It’s too late now to do anything about. The path with least amount of “long-term” pain would be cold turkey, massive cuts to ALL entitlement programs and I mean EVERY SINGLE SOCIAL SPENDING PROGRAM.

      And your point would be???

First, even if “all Mitt Romney was doing” was running for President, by doing so he CREATED JOBS by having a campaign organization. Yes, they were temporary jobs, but they were jobs nonetheless!

Second, how the heck do you think the job creators are going to start creating jobs when:

      1. They’re being taxed to death, with more taxes on the way, and

      2. They’re being regulated out of business, with more regulations on the way?

Money is a lot like water… it will flow following the path of least resistance. If taxes are raised, and regulations are increased, then people shouldn’t be surprised if the “job creators” take their money ELSEWHERE instead of investing it in the United States!

It’s so obvious and simple! And, yet, the Administration INSISTS on demonizing and punishing the job creators!

That’s amazing how Mitt Romney did nothing between 2000 and 2012, yet people insist on saying that he was in charge of the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. I wonder who was actually in charge of the Olympics and doing the work, and why they would be willing to give Mitt Romney the credit for it?

Seeking re-election is almost all OBlamo has done since winning the presidency the first time. However, the campaigner-in-chief does have quite a bit of time left over for golf.

The four idiots in the picture are the primary cause of our economic dilemma. They are not “stupid” – in fact, they are very smart. Look at how they tame the masses of idiots with just their senseless words! Its really incredible. Boehner is a RINO and a spineless idiot just like the dems, not that I am either party (especially since they are both hellbent on sinking our country). I often wonder what, exactly, do they think they stand to gain by collapsing America? What have they been promised? They can’t possibly believe they are superior in their thoughts and actions, could they???

I agree, everyone should do this until they get their act together. That could be a long time but it would wake the takers up so maybe they would realize were the money comes from in the first place! It is legal, just go to your Human resources dept. and change your tax form. Went to Walmart last night and everyone there was using foodstamps and dressed like they were rich and all had a really nice phone, not the Obama phone but a really nice one. Thou shalt not COVET, does no one on this planet know what this means!

Yeah just try it. I went tax exempt for a year in 2008 during a divorce which left me broke. I had to take out a loan against my 401k to pay it back plus more for not at least paying quarterly. I wasn’t even trying to dodge paying taxes, just buying time to get things sorted out in my life. ….. I’ll have the loan paid off this Feb. If I wouldn’t have taken the loan, the IRS would have nailed my jazz but good.

The real problem lies within the picture posted above this article, career politicians. Term limits for all should be a easy solution but you see how our employees have become richer than us, their employers. I find it funny if not sad that everyone is so concerned about this mythical fiscal cliff while this country is $16,000,000,000,000 trillion in debt and no one wants to talk about that. America is going to fall between now and 2016, that is fact.

So the crash of the US and most of the western world is now inevitable because we refused to be adults.

My Question: Where can a middle income family flee to find freedom and the ability to prosper? I begin to feel like a middle class German Jewish man in 1929 Germany. I know it will get very bad, but where and how do I escape the pain?

      Lost,

Try the moving to one of the states the left calls “flyover states” (Utah, Nebraska, etc). Good hardworking people that are honest. Governments that are (fairly) responsible, police that believe in justice as well as the law. Neighbors you can rely on and trust. Businesses are moving there for a reason. That would be my advice, for what it’s worth……

Hmm . . . no wonder America is going no where but down. The government is making it too easy for people not to care about our future. It’s no wonder people won’t stand up to the government over a welfare nation or at a local level to reform laws. I mean, look at what’s going on in Washington.

I must admit. I am getting tired and becoming angry. The system is broken and the sooner it collapses the better. If I get laid off I will collect every dime that I can. I am sick of feeding the beast with my tax dollars as well as those that refuse to support their own existence. Yes we should help those in need but most people aren’t in need, they are in “want” and they ate lazy or too prideful to take a job they consider beneath them. So… I’m done.

I hate to admit it but I am beginning to think the same way but I am going to keep on being self supporting as long as employment is still available. I have dodged 3 rounds of layoffs over the last 4 years but I feel that my luck is going to run out soon. ( I am tired of waking up nervous and going to bed feeling the same way.) They say when you hit bottom you have nowhere to go but up. Maybe that’s what it’s going to take for this country.

People aren’t ashamed to be on welfare anymore. I know I used to hate it when my grandmother sent me to the store with a book of food coupons. They need to not make it so lucrative to be on government benefits, people get waaaay more than they actually need. It should only be enough to keep you alive not to live comfortably. They also need to make it not so easy to scam the system. I have a friend that works in the welfare office and she tells me all the time how easy it is to scam because the workers don’t hardly check or verify anything.
