‘Tis the season of giving, and no time was that more apparent than on a street corner in New York City earlier this month.
That’s when a tourist witnessed an NYPD officer giving a homeless man without shoes — and with blistered feed — a pair of winter boots. The photo taken of the scene, unbeknown to the officer at the time, has since gone viral.

NYPD officer Lawrence DePrimo purchased boots for this homeless man who had blisters on his feet. (Image: NYPD Facebook)
The cellphone photo of Officer Lawrence DePrimo, snapped by Jennifer Foster of Florence, Ariz., on Nov. 14, has been made it onto news sites and blogs around the world. The photo posted on the NYPD’s official Facebook page has been liked more than 315,000 times and shared more than 74,000 times. According to the New York Times, as of Wednesday evening it had been viewed by more than 1.6 million people.
Here’s how Foster, who is the communications director for the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office in Arizona, set the scene, according to the NYPD’s post:
“Right when I was about to approach, one of your officers came up behind him. The officer said, ‘I have these size 12 boots for you, they are all-weather. Let’s put them on and take care of you.’ The officer squatted down on the ground and proceeded to put socks and the new boots on this man. The officer expected NOTHING in return and did not know I was watching. I have been in law enforcement for 17 years. I was never so impressed in my life. I did not get the officer’s name. It is important, I think, for all of us to remember the real reason we are in this line of work. The reminder this officer gave to our profession in his presentation of human kindness has not been lost on myself or any of the Arizona law enforcement officials with whom this story has been shared.”
The NYPD stated in its post that the photo had been cropped to better show the scene closer up, given that the original was taken at a further distance.
Watch this report about the photograph:
The comments on the photo, approaching the 20,000 mark, reflect positive sentiments. Here’s a snapshot of a few of them.

(Image: NYPD Facebook)
The Times reported the 25-year-old officer saying he could see blisters on the man’s feet. DePrimo recalled how he himself was wearing two pairs of socks and still felt cold. He said he started speaking with the homeless man and found out his shoe size. Heading into the Sketchers store, DePrimo purchased the new shoes.
But it wasn’t just DePrimo who felt compelled to help out. The Times reported Sketchers’ store manager Jose Cano gave the officer an employee discount for the originally $100 boots.
DePrimo’s action is not something he’s likely to forget anytime soon — nor does he want to. According to the Times, the officer has kept the receipt for the shoes in his pocket ever since. It reminds him “that sometimes people have it worse.”

Nov. 29, 2012 at 12:36pmI am not sure how you can prove this.
People do this sort of thing all the time but it’s not usually caught on film. My parents have bought food for obviiously homeless men more times than I can count and my brother when he lived near a big city would go in and take peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and blankets he gathered from people he knew. You don’t have to have a lot of money to help your fellow man.

Also, when you say : “It is not my job to convince you…” you are merely acknowledging the weakness of your arguments. It’s not that it’s not your job; you just seem incapable of convincing anyone. Nov. 29, 2012 at 3:14pmPeople hate the cops because of the ABA.
They brought forth Uniform Commercial Code.
Before that you could not be charged with ANYTHING if there was not a legitimate Plaintiff or Victim !!!!!
Now they are just condescending, belegerent “code” enforcers for the Corporation (Their city or state).
They are there to raise revenue for their corporation while nit-picking and creating a “big-to-do” about a trivial and meanless “infraction”.
I was mugged for 62.50 recently by a man with a gun.
He accosted me and demanded I pay his employer 62.50 because I had no light on my bicycle on the sidewalk at night.
He is an agent for the PRIVATE COIMPANY – “The Pinellas County Sheriffs Office”
I am 47 yrs old, I have a 168 I.Q. and was absolutely NOT a safety hazard on my bike.
I study Law and had plenty of remedy to bring forth, but could not afford to lose the 500 dollars they threatened me with if I lost my case.
In the old days the case would be thrown out because they is no Plaintiff or Victim.
To my understanding, this still may apply if one reserves their common law rights prior to their court date.
I had common law remedy and statutory remedy also.
The Politicians are criminals that have legalized their crimes. Bottom Line !!!!

It is not possible for many of these homeless to live in apartments or shelters because they might accidently start a fire. Many of them don’t want medication or incarceration in a mental hospital so they live on the street. The officer knows this and is showing a little human kindness…something this world sorely needs.

Nov. 29, 2012 at 4:59pmWhether this was a staged event or not, we’ll never know. Nevertheless, this we do know, the general attitude of police officers as depicted in this story used to be the norm, not the exception to the norm. Today, this is an exception to the norm. Further, if this was not staged, it bears zero reflection on the NYPD. The NYPD did not perform this act of kindness in its official capacity. The NYPD did not instruct the police officer to do this nor did the NYPD pay for the boots; the man in uniform paid for the boots out of his own pocket. Shame on the NYPD for co-opting this man’s efforts. That’s akin to a parent taking credit for their children’s achievements.

Nov. 29, 2012 at 5:07pmStaged or not, the real message here is the RARITY of such acts of kindness that it would go viral and become an Internet sensation, much like viewing some celebrity starlet’s nipple or a 3-headed cat. To those who are simply amazed at this officer’s behavior please ask yourself: is my life so devoid of kindness and compassion for others that this one clip becomes such a big deal? Have we become so devoid of humanity that we hold this one event up to remind us to feel good about humanity?
This isn’t a criticism of the NYPD officer, but of our modern society that digests ‘junk food’ soundbytes and viral videos as if they were spiritually nutritious. Gushing over one kind act as being ‘extraordinary’ says more about our own emptiness.

I put on my flashers pulled well off the road, grabbed my cleaning supplies and vacuum cleaner and headed for the bus stop. I was less than 30 yds. away and I say the cop’s lights come on. When I got back I told him what happened and that I had to get to work. I ask if I was far enough off the road. He offered to tow me to the park and ride. Amazed I thanked him. And at the park and ride. I thanked again and he said load up you gear I’ll take you to your first job. It was over 5 miles away. Before you start slam dancing Peace Officers most know their job is to serve and protect. Most will and do go above and beyond to help. I treat them with consideration and good manners. The few times I’ve had dealing with them they have always treated me the same. You might want to try that. And if you are or act like a criminal expect to be treated like one.

In my family we don’t believe in handing out money to hobo’s of any kind. We will buy them food, blankets or even shoes if they need them. We have witnessed people who claimed they were hungry try to sell other people the hot food we just gave them. It is very common for these same type of people to sell shoes. I am sure this cop sees all kinds and I don’t envy him and maybe he saw something different with this guy but people should always be aware that these kinds of people typically just want their next drink or fix and they will do ANYTHING to get it.

Nov. 29, 2012 at 9:34pmThis is not staged and I know most of you won’t believe me, but it’s also not all that unusual. I have been a police officer for almost 28 years and I have seen the generosity of my fellow officers on so many occasions that this story doesn’t surprise me in the least. Just today a message from an officer in Virginia was read at all roll calls (I’m in Ohio) concerning a six year old boy with a terminal illness. The boy may not see this Christmas, but all he wants is Christmas cards from police. The response of cards (and gifts) was overwhelming.
We’ve all seen viral videos on this site and others that feature bad cops behaving in abhorrent ways. The comments that follow those stories express not only outrage (which is appropriate), but also the idea that most cops are equally corrupt and brutal. Nothing could be further from the truth. The disappointing thing to me is that it is my fellow libertarians who are the most anti-cop. I understand that we are seen as agents of the government, but that is not how I see myself. I work for the citizens of the city and have no interest in bothering anyone who isn’t doing harm to others. The majority of police officers really do want to help good people.

I understand the necessity of being safe, but no where did Jesus say put them up in your home. I would suggest a hotel for a few nights if possible, or at the very least helping them to a shelter if possible. What this officer did is exactly what Jesus was referring to. Also, that Passage goes deeper than physical needs. It addresses meeting people’s Spiritual needs as well.
People are spiritually hungry, give them Jesus the Bread of Life
People are spiritually thirsty, give them Jesus the Living Water
People are spiritually naked, giving them Jesus clothes them in righteousness
Sinners suffer from a heart sickness, By HIS stripes we are healed
Without Jesus we are lonely, God is our Father and Jesus stays closer than a brother
We are slaves and prisoners to sin and death, Jesus came to set us free
These are the thing Jesus was truly talking about, but we give people Jesus when we meet the physical needs with the Love of Christ. Then we tell them about God’s love and Jesus’ sacrifice.
I pray that Christians will have the courage and the means to help those in need spiritually and physically. We need to start thinking like this officer, put ourselves aside and Love without measure.
I found a good series on this idea on youtube from the Fuel Project called “Stay Free”… Awesome series as is their series “Know Your Enemy” that explains the Mystery Babylon system in detail.
God Bless my brother

Nov. 29, 2012 at 9:53amAmerican taxpayers have put more clothes, more food and more shoes on the needy than any other country in the world. If this man chooses to be homeless, then the richest man in the world can’t help him. People like this homeless man has become in control of the American government and Obama is hoping the money runs out real soon. In fact, we are 16 trillion dollars in debt and increases every second while Obama the debt and still wants more money. Those of us who have worked all our lives and paid taxes and did what we were supposed to are about to lose our medical insurance, medical care and retirement, because Obama wants to take it away from us. Obama supporters think Obama is going to give them free medical care, but doctors do not work for free. So while this story is very heart warming, American taxpayers has provided to those in need for so many years they do not appreciate it and they have become so greedy they are willing to destroy the entire country for a free cell phone, because they think they are entitled to it. America died on November 6, 2012.

No. We could not even watch them behind closed doors writing the thing nobody could read which should be called DemocratCare or NastyNancyCare because she has been on this long before Obama, the fascist. Those who voted them into office do not understand they are getting a pittance and right into slavery and the old plantation is back for all of us. Ok, got carried away myself but please please don’t be bitter for as a man thinketh so he is. Let us all do something good this Christmas or anytime we see a need. That one policeman is better than all those who use force and taxes to control us. Right? Please don’t write something I have to respond to. This way too much.

Nov. 29, 2012 at 4:58pmAmerica DID die on November 6, 2012. I wish it were not so, but when the takers outvote the providers, it’s over. These people will continue to vote themselves free stuff, by voting for people who don’t care a lick about our nation, and that provide free stuff so they can be reelected. It make take a while for the country to actually realize this and die from the effects, but there it is. My only hope is that all the takers who reelected Santa Obama to get some free stuff, either learn their lesson in the crash when they will have nothing, or perish quickly in the crash, so that we can begin to rebuild. After years of professing a philosophy that the makers of wealth are evil and greedy, the takers who contribute nothing but their complaints will soon see how badly this nation fails without those greedy producers earning their profit. The takers will finally get what they have been asking for and it will not be pretty.

Nov. 29, 2012 at 9:17amYes, that’s a very nice story, but…………… my cynical self can’t help but wonder how the homeless man became homeless in the first place. The logical conclusion is that the homeless man made a long series of extremely bad life-decisions and is simply experiencing the consequences of said decisions. In short, it’s his own damn fault he doesn’t have shoes!

Nov. 29, 2012 at 6:34pm@ CatHouseUmbrella,
In my state, many of the homeless are also mentally ill, but one issue here is that they have the right to sign themselves out of psychiatric hospitals unless they are a threat to themselves or others. I have known of cases where homeless people were taken off the street, given a place to stay, food to eat and decent clothes to wear. A significant number stayed only for a time, usually about a month, and then went back to wandering the streets. So, at least here where I live, the homeless often are making choices. I don’t happen to agree with their choices, but they aren’t mine to make.

That was when PBS came in very snowy after 11:00 at night. I was pretty much a child of the 80′s alternative music scene after that. But good song nonetheless! :)

Because the bigger story should, how did it have to come to this for that man, and society in general? Who’s policies were in place, to lead to his downfall, and why haven’t any of the slugs running these Gov’t assisted programs ,that continue to leech money off the taxpayers, not found and helped him in any shape or form?
I keep hearing about how it’s all the rich man’s fault that he’s poor. And yet, the rate of rich folk was actually growing, the middle class was either caught up and divided by the crabs in the barrel or hopped on board the gravy train. Either they were in place to improved their lives, or the down trodden tackled them before things got better for them, by way of over taxation.
Tell me more about that. Don’t show me a picture of a homeless man, when this country continues to see a growing mass of homeless every year, and every time the rate f homeless grows, it can be traced back to Liberal policies nation wide. And the one’s to thank are still in power, because the zombie followers won’t even bother to check out the people in power. They just follow the word of MSM to be their brains for everything in life.

Nov. 29, 2012 at 9:21amThe welfare state created by big government advocates will keep that homeless man and many millions in poverty for life. That’s exactly where they want to keep them, the more people in poverty justifies their unconstitutional programs and it’s just a circle that’s never broken. We’ve had the ‘war on poverty’ since the 60′s yet we still have poverty and we always will and it’s a pipe dream to think government can eliminate poverty. The less government intervention in all areas of life will improve the quality of life in Amerika, and when we return to the principals of our founding fathers of limited government then we’ll have prosperity.

Nov. 29, 2012 at 10:08amWANGOPANTS, You certainly are the self professed living proof of the socialist left who have no idea of what true charity is. Well, I suppose that your view of charity is only when the money is forced from all producers then filtered through government agencies as they siphon off some 70 plus percent. That way very little makes it to the truly needy, but you can have your warm heart to thank for helping. I in no way back the government’s way of doing this any more than I back organizations like the American Red Cross, or United Way. Both of these organizations do the same thing as the government and keep more of the funds than they distribute.

‘course it costs a lot of money to fly those wing nuts around the country, put them up in the best hotels, etc. Nonetheless, those Freedom Concerts raised millions and millions of dollars to help the families of our fallen heroes in the military. I mean, look how efficient the government is in the redistribution effort and charity administration. Sure the guy had no shoes…but he had pants didn’t he? Nov. 29, 2012 at 6:02pmTractor is right. I remember reading a book by Bettie J Eadie (or something like that) titled “Embraced by the Light”. In it she described a near death experience where she went to heaven and saw mighty angles volunteering to go down to earth and be these hapless creatures-mentally ill people, homeless, the dregs by no fault of their own,the physically deformed etc., and she said God told her that they were there to teach compassion and love. So, the next time you see a horribly deformed person or an ugly person or anybody so different that your instincts may wrongly tell you to make fun of them, you should think twice. Because in many cases, strong Angels reside inside that body, and you will pay dearly if you mess with them. Note, I am not talking about the “takers and fakers” out there. Only the truly needy.
