A teacher in South Lyon, Michigan, has been suspended after playing a song for students that supports gay marriage. As a result of the action, Susan Johnson, an eighth-grade educator at South Lyon’s Centennial Middle School, has been removed from the classroom without pay.
The incident unfolded last week after a student asked if he could play it for other pupils to hear. The tune, by underground rapper Ben Macklemore, tackles the issues of hate, stereotyping and other related themes. While Johnson assumed her students could learn a great deal from the song, not everyone appreciated her decision to play it.
“I asked him a few questions about the song. If it was violent, if there was any profanity, and he said no,” Johnson, a performing arts teacher, explained. “And I said this sounds like a great song to go ahead and use for the class.”
WJBK-TV has more:
A student complained and by the end of the day, South Lyon school leadership informed the teacher that she would be suspended for three days (two without pay), WJBK-TV reports. Johnson is stunned and dumbfounded.
“I don’t think that it was really even thought through. I was paralyzed. I really didn’t understand why I was being suspended,” she told the outlet. ”I’m very disappointed in the bias, the bigotry that I feel that they’re really hiding behind.”
School officials have declined to speak with media.
“I really love my kids and I never want to hurt them, but I also know that there’s a lot of bullying and there’s a lot of gay bashing and racial issues going on in our country and I want the kids to feel comfortable in my class no matter who they are,” the educator added.
We’ll leave you with the controversial song and music video, below (caution: explicit):

Nov. 30, 2012 at 1:06amI am reading the Bible and can’t find anything in the New Testament ( where the new covenant is found) where it says judge and hate. Christ said that he who is without sin, cast the first stone. He also instructed to judge not, lest you be judged. Forgive and you will be forgiven. We will all have to stand before our Lord individually. The more I read, I realize that it is all about love. If we only love those that think like us, we are no better than a thief. Even a thief loves his family. Truly read the Bible, there is no room for hate. They are our brothers and sisters. The important thing is that they know how much Jesus loves them. We are all sinners and only through His blood are we worthy of salvation.
The student seems to have misrepresented the video to the teacher. It was an ad for gay marriage in class. Not really the place for it. The activists alienate many people.

Nov. 30, 2012 at 6:22amGIVER, stop taking the Bible out of context. The very scriptures you quote go on to tell you to judge once you have removed the sin from your own life. You are to judge by scripture. If someone is sinning against God, you are to make it known to them. Jesus went around all day pointing people’s sin out to them and then told them to go and sin no more. He also warned them of eternal hell fire repeatedly. It’s because of his love for them that he did this. You need to start at Matthew 1 and read all the way through instead of picking and choosing the verses you like and making a smorgasbord Bible.

Hardiepiper@- you have the right to judge once you removed sin from your life? If you removed you didn’t do nothing. Because is was you who artificially removed. Salvation and sin redemption is a gift. Is Grace. You don’t win the right to judge nor given to. If you know much about the scripture, please point the verse where it said. By the way where is the golden rule. Ohh I misquoted that?

The Federal government should have no say in who you marry, what you smoke or put in your body, where you live, what you drive, or what you eat and drink. They should also have no say in how you education your children, what church you go to or how you display that faith ( even in the public square), nor should they have anything to say about the type of energy I use to power, heat, and use inside my own home or business.
Most people on this site are against Federal government intrusion into our lives outside of what the Constitution strictly spells out. Now before you go all “then why didn’t they vote for Ron Paul or Gary Johnson”, that is a dog that just won’t hunt. That has been discussed over and over and over and many (rightly so) had concerns about Paul’s electability (many RP supporters GREATLY over estimate his appeal to the leftist, youth, and moderates) and his foreign policy which was isolationist, which even the Founder’s did not agree with completely since they allowed the Senate power to approve treaties with other nations and the President to instigate them.

1. no one is asking your church to honor gay marriage. People are asking the government too. If you are logic is correct then everyone should get civili unions gay or straight and marriage should only be decided by the church. I think most people would agree with that.
2. Which part of biblical marriage is sacred? The part where I get to beat my wife, or have many of them? Marriage has been redefined over the years, to suggest otherwise is to ignore history.

You need to look further into history yourself. Marriage should be sacred, regardless of where you stand, the state stands, or even where a church stands. If you don’t believe me, good, look at history that you so described. Ever culture that had any lasting effect fell because they dropped their morals.
You say that people do not want to marry in a church, that statement is either naive or a lie. The homosexuals are targeting churches in an attempt to demonize and force churches to “get with the times”. Most churches have a book that I’m well familiar with that shows time and time again what happens to those that “get with the times”.
From what I gather from your statements, it is your belief that there is nothing wrong with homosexiaility and should be embraced by the community, however, you have either not looked at history, or even current CDC evidence as to what problems those that are into that life style cause. Should my dollar go to treat those of that life style? Should the church pay for treatment and what other issues are caused by the choice of a few and their impact on a community?
Your lack of forethought and wanted the “pleasure me” mentality is what is causing the destruction of this country. Your lack of common sense in seeing the destruction is normal for children, as children do not see the problem in running into the street.

If gays want a recognized relationship, fine, figure out an appropriate description of it that doesn’t turn the definition of marriage upside down. Why is this country allowing a minority to determine what the majority must accept and believe? I do not want my children to ever learn or believe that 2 mommies or 2 daddies are equal to a mother and a father as the most desirable family unit FOR CHILDREN to be raised in. Common sense should tell anyone that children should have a mother and a father ideally. There are no “perfect” families, but striving for the ideal seems to have died and whatever works for the selfish desires of the moment prevails.

so are you implying jews/christians/mormans/muslims fell as a result of straying from the “morals” their books preached on bigamy, slavery, polygamy? Are you suggesting that christians have strayed for not providing a dowry, or that Jews & mormons have strayed for not allowing multiple wives? Have their faiths grown better or worse as a result? Marriage is ambiguous at best when it comes to faith.
I am an athiest, and therefore believe all religion is out of date, but let us not go ascribing fringe beliefs to that of mainstream U.S. The majority of homosexuals and their supporters do not care what your ignorant churches do so long as they get equality under the law/title. There are plenty of fringe movement that attack churches, but to be fair there are plenty of ignorant bigots like you who view the number of CDC related HIV cases for gay men as a result of their lifestyle, and not the result of a lack of sex education. In fact if you look at the statistical map of places that have the highest rates of HIV, they also are the places that do not teach sex education. These are also the states with the highest teen pregnancy numbers, and the list goes on. The problem is throwing the bible at people and calling homosexuality a plague doesn’t prove your point just makes you look like more of an uneducated bigot.

Your statements regarding the different religions are disregarded as you obviously do not understand and reject any thought from them, hence your thoughts on an education.

Let’s take your argument point by point shall we?
Spending millions per year on sex ed does not actually address that under George W. Bush they spent those millions on abstinance only education, which is why teen pregnancy, and aids actually went up during those years. Search your own link for aids diagnoses through the years there was a steep decline when comprehensive sexual education was being implemented in the 1990s and a steep rise when abstinance only was being taught under president bush. Spending million on sex education does not mean you teach about STDs and condoms. For instance look at the teen pregnancy rate in states that still teach abstinence only education: http://www.cdc.gov/vitalsigns/teenpregnancy/StateInfo.html
furthermore that same CDC study you cited pointed out that HIV/AIDs diagnoses were falling in states with comprehensive sexual education. Perhaps you should have actually read the report instead of just looking at the pretty charts.
my views on religion are disregarded cause you cannot disprove what I say, but I am not trying to pick on your faith, Just don’t want it to force homophobia into our politics.
One final point. Do you think the best way to prevent the spread of aids is to not allow gay people to have monogamous relationships with one partner? No one is forcing your church to recognize it, just the government. I understand the conservative argument on abortion, but am baffled by your stance on homosexuality.

Again you have made my point. You look but do not see, you listen but do not hear. If you had understood the report, you would have seen that the highest rate of HIV infections where in the following top 3 locations: District of Columbia, Maryland, and New York. You stated that those places teach abstinence only, I refute your claim for those locations. You incorrectly state that “abstinance only was being taught under president bush”, however, a cursory look found the New Your City Department of Education HIV/AIDS Curriculum 2005 by the Board of Education that does instruct STIs, condoms, as well as others. If you want to PROVE your point, then do so without the failed attempt of creating false information.
If you want to continue this discussion, then have real facts in hand, and leave the childish behavior at home. If you cannot see the negative impact to the community by engaging in that type of life style (both monetarily and psychological as well as the general welfare of the community) then you are blind.
Your comment on religion is noted. As many before me has stated, you can lead a horse to water but cannot make them drink. Your opinion is your own, I have not said anything derogatory about you being an athiest even though you have done so to me on many occasions.
My stance is not limited to homosexuality, but all infidelity and sex outside of marriage.

Actually you are proving mine, in all three place HIV+ cases, while high due to population density have decreased since the implementation of comprehensive sexual education (same report).
The “negative behavior” of people wanting to have a relationship with a single partner rather than promiscuous sex? Do you think HIV+ rates would increase or decrease if couples homosexual or heterosexual were in a long term committed relationship with one partner? So why deny homosexuals that right?
My comment on religion is not meant to offend, just to get clarification. Why is it ok to have many wives, but not ok to have one committed relationship between two people that care for each other?
Roughly 2% (about 6.2 million) of the US population is homosexual, if we take into account the amount of of people HIV and take 6!% of that (718,794) from homosexual activity, then we find that roughly 11% of the homosexual community has HIV. If you then narrow that down to people in long term committed relationships that number drops drastically. Statistically speaking HETEROsexual men are also far more likely (3 to 1) to get Herpes, and (6 to 1) genital warts.
There are issues affecting the Homosexual community, but it is a result of stigma and a lack of education. I am a promiscuous heterosexual. I have never had an STD, or gotten anyone pregnant because I use protection, and have parents that respect me and my choices, rather than preach ignorance and intoleranc

“but I am not trying to pick on your faith” Any intelligent individual would believe otherwise
“There are issues affecting the Homosexual community, but it is a result of stigma and a lack of education.” so the homosexuals in California are naked in the streets in full view of children just trying to have a monogamous relationship? This is a good thing for the community? Would you care to calculate the cost in treatment of HIV and other STIs for this type of behavior? Should I be required to pay for the medical services? No one is asking you or your church to honor gay marriage (certain extremists aside) gay people are not “exposing themselves” in the street with greater number than straight people. Further evidence that this type of life style is INCREASING AIDS infections and not decreasing as you stated:
“In the United States, gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) comprise the group most affected by HIV. MSM is the only risk group in which new HIV infections have been steadily increasing since the early 1990s. CDC estimates that MSM represent approximately 2% of the US population, but accounted for more than half of all new HIV infections annually from 2006 to 2009 — 56% in 2006 (27,000), 58% in 2007 (32,300), 56% in 2008 (26,900), and 61% in 2009 (29,300). Since the beginning of the US epidemic, MSM have consistently represented the largest percentage of persons diagnosed with AIDS and persons with an AIDS diagnosis who have died.”

You ignore my numbers about other STDs that heterosexual people get more than homosexual people. Citing the same statistics doesn’t make you smart, it just proves you haven’t read what I wrote. I went to a liberal school I am in my mid 20s and I assure you in the 90s sexual orientation was not covered in sex ed, we are only now starting to cover it in schools. RE: “New Testament God”. If you had further education and wisdom, you would know that there are two definitions to slavery. Hint, if you work for someone then you are a slave. I do believe that you are referring to the force version of slavery that is wrong… see Jesus words on the second of the two greatest commandments. The other slavery refers to indentured servitude, what we call a job in today’s language. As for wife beating…. husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church….. I do not think that anyone will believe that Jesus would beat the church.. You will not find in the bible where God stated that polygamy was his plan for man. Genesis proves that. God made Eve for Adam, he did not create Jane, Alice, Betty, Shelley, and Eve for Adam.

The song is clearly biased – it singles out “right-wing conservatives” as those opposed to equal treatment for gays, dismisses the Bible as a 3500 year old book, and calls out certain churches as “preaching hate.” I can definitely see a child raised a household that is strictly Christian being upset because they’ve always been taught homosexuality is a sin and now even their teacher is saying they’re bad people.
No offense, but when it comes to the topic of homosexuality, the answer should be “treat everyone with the same respect you’d want shown to yourself. We don’t want bullies no matter who they are.” And that’s it. It’s not the school’s job to promote music passing moral judgments on churches, religions, and political affiliations.

Examples of this would be christian photog’s,bakers, planners etc currently being sued for discrimination for not providing services to gay couples. The only smart thing to do would be abolish marriage and give civil unions to everyone. Stop being a tool and think.

Nov. 29, 2012 at 2:38pmDepending on the class, it might not have had any plac in the class. But then, classes are supposed to be a place to open minds and have students think for themselves. The song itself doesn’t sound too extreme, but I learned early on as a teacher that you have to be very careful; seems Americans these days just look for reasons to be offended.
Keep in mind, this can go both ways, folks. I had a black student want to talk about her experience at the Million Man March. She talked about her experience meeting all the “great Democrats” in the NAACP and I asked her if there were any black republicans, she laughed and said “we don’t consider them black”. That got a very interesting conversation going about her own intrinsic biases, and her mind opened up a bit.
So I guess some of you would saythat conversation didn’t belong in class? Are they there to learn to think or just act like robots? As long as the teacher doesn’t impose an opinion, but instead provokes thought, whats the problem?
Oh, maybe the problem is that some of you don’t want students to think; you want them to be automatons, programmed by YOUR particular faction and not challenged to reexamine their own beliefs. That’s the whole basis behind ‘religion’, whether it be the secular religion of the left, the cult leaders of Global Warming, or the cult leaders of Muhammed or Jesus or whatever.
the problem isn’t teachers making kids think; it’s you people trying to keep kids from thinking.

HOWEVER. The teacher should be QUALIFIED to do it, because they DO tend to lean the way they believe. As for the story. Myself. I see nothing wrong with what the teacher did as long as it was on SUBJECT—and it looks as if it was NOT. I ALSO think that it is OK to talk about gays and who they are, but IF you do that, you have to provide BOTH SIDES of the story….Gays have HIGH AIDS incidents….and their lifestyle IS PERVERTED. I have no problem with talking about bullying, it is rampant. Anything sexual needs parent consent, period. I disaree with much of what is taught in schools about it, because it is not taught with morality. There are some things that need to be taught and talked about at home. The teacher’s mistake was in not listening to it, and making sure there was some input from parents first. We still are the number one educator of our children and grandchildren, and teachers need to respect the parent’s wishes in this and many other things taught-and there is much I find offensive being taught, like us being an “evil” country, and not recognising Americas a great country that has done much for the world in introducing democracy, and a republic and freedom. In my family (two teachers right now) we are not happy at the way American eceptionalism is not taught. Nov. 29, 2012 at 3:10pmAs a teacher (community college) myself at one time, I see what is happening in schools today as abhorrent. There are no civics classes, few history classes, less core classes except for English (so minorities can learn it), and remedial math. The majority of kids coming out of school today are ignorant, can’t speak properly, write properly, or communicate properly. The pack mentality is stronger than even, without individual thought. I remember back in the 70s they introduced Transcendental teaching. If a teacher did a times table matrix vs. word problems, they could get fired. Teachers were forced into lockstep. Progressives were very well on their way to screwing up teaching even then. Let’s talk about race, birth control, abortions, etc. so the state becomes the parent. But for sure, not the basic fundamentals. Scared the hell out of me then, and now look at what we have…masses of ignorant people. Dude, start with the basics and keep your personal agenda out of the classroom. If you want to teach a class on social sciences then do it, but don’t take what time you have to not teach core education. Trophies for all. *sarcasm*

She should have listened to the song first; it would obviously offend people. There’s a big difference between promoting equal treatment to everyone and denigrating people who don’t agree with your views.
The lyrics of the song singles out “right-wing conservatives,” religious folks in general, and the Bible in particular. There’s a proper way to teach respect, but this song is clearly intended for a biased audience, not to teach respect for all.

The very core of religion is to indoctrinate your kids into your religion at a young age. You therefore take out the “choice” or “making a decision.”
Again, I have parents who have children, at as young as age one they were talking to them about what the Bible said, about God, Jesus, praying, church. That IS indoctrination. A teacher choosing to play ONE song isn’t indoctrination.
I’m not speaking on the validity of the song, or the lyrics, just how hypocritical religion is when they brainwash their kids at a young age, then when someone shows their child something different they cry “INDOCTRINATION!”

Nov. 30, 2012 at 2:43am@Moderation, parents have a right to teach their children about God. They are the parents. As the child grows, they question things that are related to their parents’ teachings. This is normal.
However, for you to equate the liberal agenda being pushed on the students from the moment they enter the school till they leave six hours later by an unrelated individual is just not well thought out. It is indoctrination. From the ‘I pledge allegiance to the planet’ posters to teaching them about birth control in middle school. There are schools giving birth control pills to 11 year old girls.
Moderate, the government does not own the children. It is not too much to ask that your tax dollars go towards educating your child, not feeding them the lies of the Nanny State.
No child should be bullied, but they are. There have always been bullies. Everyone gets called gay now, even the straight kids. Middle school is by far the hardest. We have to stand against all bullies but the school cannot become the biggest bully.
In a free country, parents still raise their children. Where I came from in Cuba, the state teaches your child to snitch on you.
This action by the teacher may have been a one time thing for her but I can tell you that teachers across the country are INDOCTRINATING the children against free markets, success, faith, and towards more dependency and redistribution of wealth. All tried and true Marxist ideas which have caused the collapse of many countries.

They aren’t “teaching” their kid, they are indoctrinating them. They force them to go to church from a young age. They talk about heaven, hell, and force their young children to pray.
They create a life, where EVERYTHING revolves around their religion, so kids aren’t capable of “questioning their parents” without risk of losing everything. Family, friends, community so by the time the kids are able to “choose” they are unable to make a completely balanced choice.
The right is continually living in a world that just doesn’t exist where.
