13 Ways to Help You Visualize the ‘Fiscal Cliff’ Debacle

We know there’s been a lot of talk lately about the “fiscal cliff.” We also know it can get a little wonky. So we decided to help put together a pictorial that helps explain what exactly is going on. Enjoy:

First, the cliff…

So essentially we owe this much money

OK, more like this much

And we have to pay it back somehow

Half of Washington wanted to pay the money back by taking “rich” people’s money

The other half wanted the government to spend less and pay the money back that way

So everyone agreed these smart guys should set up a panel and come up with a budget deal

Guess what?

It did not work.

As an ‘incentive’ to get things done, the Budget Control Act of 2011 threatened harsh repercussions if the panel failed

You know, to force them to come up with a budget plan

But no one did anything

So the punishments are about to take place now

Those punishments along with expiring Bush-era tax cuts are referred to as the “fiscal cliff”

First, everyone’s taxes go up!

That’s a $500 billion increase in taxes

And these guys are going to have to spend $200 billion less!

The sudden halt to spending & massive tax increases might mean another recession

No one in Washington really wants this

13 Ways To Help You Visualize The Fiscal Cliff

http://www.glittarazzi.com

So there are four ways to deal with this problem:

13 Ways To Help You Visualize The Fiscal Cliff

http://en.wikipedia.org

1. Just go over the cliff

13 Ways To Help You Visualize The Fiscal Cliff

http://www.flickriver.com

According to the Washington Post:

“The simplest option for Congress and the White House would be to do nothing. Taxes would go up. The military and domestic spending cuts in the sequester would bite down. This would be the single largest act of debt reduction in American history, cutting some $1.2 trillion from the deficit over the next two years. Trouble is, that much austerity would likely also induce a recession. That’s why few policymakers advocate this scenario.

There’s another problem with this plan: Lawmakers can’t just sit back and do absolutely nothing. Even if the tax hikes and spending cuts kick in, Congress would still need to vote to lift the $16.4 trillion debt ceiling by February or so. Otherwise, the United States government would no longer be able borrow money to fund its obligations. That could be trouble.”

2. Just go over and try to fix things on the other side

13 Ways To Help You Visualize The Fiscal Cliff

latimes.com

According to the Washington Post:

“Another possibility is that lawmakers don’t reach a deal by Dec. 31. The United States goes over the fiscal cliff. But it’s only temporary. After all, those tax hikes and spending cuts don’t kick in with full force immediately. They’re spread out over two years. So there’s still time to make a deal when the new Congress convenes in January.

Why would lawmakers do this? It might make a deal easier. Right now, the two parties are having a tough time reaching an agreement because Democrats want higher taxes on the wealthy and Republicans mostly refuse to vote for any tax increases at all. But if we go over the cliff, taxes automatically go much, much higher than either party wants. Now the two parties simply need to debate how to cut taxes from this new baseline. That’s a happier discussion, in theory.

The downside is that Congress and the White House might not have much time to negotiate a deal in January or February before financial markets start nosediving.”

3.  Push the cliff down the road

13 Ways To Help You Visualize The Fiscal Cliff

sanfranciscomemories.com

According to the Washington Post:

“There’s nothing stopping Congress and the White House from postponing the fiscal cliff until 2013 or 2014. Congress would simply vote to extend all (or some) of the Bush tax cuts and payroll tax cuts. Then Congress votes to override the sequester, so that none of the military and domestic spending cuts kick in. Suddenly, the fiscal cliff is gone–or at least pushed back.

The upside here is that there’s no recession. The economy gets time to mend. The flip side is that deficit would continue to grow–the CBO estimates U.S. debt would be $1.2 trillion higher over the next two years if Congress extends everything, compared with if we went over the cliff. Plus, we’d face another big showdown two years from now.”

4.  The grand bargain

13 Ways To Help You Visualize The Fiscal Cliff

Getty

According to the Washington Post:

“At the moment, there’s a lot of talk in Washington about a “grand bargain” between Republicans and Democrats. This would involve avoiding sharp austerity in 2013. It would also involve some mix of spending cuts and tax increases that are gradually phased in over the next decade, so as to slowly bring down the U.S. national debt. It would also include substantial changes to entitlement programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Examples of a “grand bargain” framework include the Simpson-Bowles plan, or the Domenici-Rivlin plan.”

Either way we are pretty much here

And most Americans should feel like this

Those twelve legislators that were set up as “the budget panel” that failed a couple years ago should be sequestered again and told they can’t leave until they get it done or they must immediately leave office. Then bring in the next panel of twelve. Then repeat as necessary.

Can we take 100% of their income for the rest of their lives if they don’t fix the problem?

Can we FINALLY lay the responsibility for this on Obama & his horrendous governing style?

There needs to be a screen shot from one of those scifi movies where a guy is falling, endlessly, into a horrifying bottomless pit. Because that’s what it has felt like for the last few years for many of us. The feeling of helplessness and terror after someone has pushed us off of the edge of the pit of no return.

    AMT Exemption Amounts for 2012

The alternative minimum tax exemption amounts for 2012 are scheduled to revert to the following levels:
$33,750 for single and head of household filers,
$45,000 for married people filing jointly and for qualifying widows or widowers, and
$22,500 for married people filing separately.
Source: Code Section 55(d)(1). Lower exemption levels mean that more taxpayers will be subject to the alternative minimum tax calculations.

That means no deductions for anyone subject to the AMT (just about everybody). This means a $3500-4500 increase over the taxes you have already paid in for 2012…. You might want to reconsider that new big screen TV you have been wanting for Christmas …. You might want to reconsider buying anything for Christmas because you might wind up owing the IRS over $4000.00 in the next few months. This is the story which is hidden in the weeds that no politician is discussing.

They’re wrong about at one important point: the Progressive Liberals DO want us to go over the cliff. They need a justification to impose an asset tax to allow them to really “equalize” everyone. Just stealing income won’t do it; they’ve been doing that for 100 years. They need to steal the assets you already own to accomplish their great utopian world.

The Soviets did it by simply hauling off tens of millions of people and killing them. Then they destroyed their agriculture with the famous “collective farms” starving tens of millions more. They confiscated all property and left people with nothing. But they were sure equal!

The Chinese did it through TWO mass killings (The Great Leap Forward and The Cultural Revolution) that wiped out as many as 80 million citizens. They also destroyed their agriculture and shipped people off to “re-education camps”.

Now our Progressive Liberals can’t yet directly pull of those amazing feats of liberal greatness so they’re going to kill of our free society through debt. When they’re done, you won’t own your home, you’ll live in govt housing, drive a govt provided Yugo, eat govt provided food and crap govt turds. You won’t be able to say ANYTHING against the govt.

    But we’ll all be equal!

When the GOP talks about “revenue”, they mean jobs, not tax hikes. Revenue from jobs helps the whole economy while increasing income tax revenue. Raising tax revenue through ‘hikes’ hurts the economy and self reduces itself in the short run and more importantly, in the long run do to the loss of jobs and therefore loss of income taxes. The GOP wants job creation policies “on the table”.

As of 2011, the Maximum Yearly Earnings Limit (Wage Base) for Social SecurityTax for everyone, rich, middle class, or poor employed people was $106,800.00 …. why not raise this Wage Base to reflect a more fair “Employer/Self-Paid In, now described as a Federal Benefit” Tax? The poor never reach this limit of course, the ie; middle-class probably would, and the wealthy probably wouldn’t and shouldn’t complain much. But this is probably TOO Simple.

      2) I get more credit cards and max them out with more wasteful items…then I blame my wife. I demand she work twelve jobs.
      3) Then I take out more loans, get a credit card with no LIMITS and continue to spend, all the while blaming my wife and kids. I tell them to all get 20 jobs each and continue to blame them…it’s their fault!
      4) All of the sudden my family stops working because they are fed up, my creditors don’t get paid and I lock my family in the basement because it’s their fault! I demand another family pay my bills or I start taking my vengeance out on them…

When will we wise up & realize that politicians are criminals. At this very moment they are crafting legislation in the Senate which is not how bills get through congress! This is illegal to do! According to our constitution bills originate in the house of the people not the senate of Harry Reed! Do you hear any one republican or democrat pointing this out? No you do not, Why? They are in agreement with this practice because it side steps the people that’s why! They all see profit in this process for themselves. That brings me to my point. They are all in this for the profit not serving the public. They do not care if you go broak because they will still get their’s from the public dole no mater your grief. They only need to worry about their election & fooling you. This song explains what I am saying called “What’s Wrong With This Song” http://www.reverbnation.com/play_now/song_9134749

How many of you would allow a politician complete control of YOUR checkbook ? My guess is ZERO. Tim Geithner, the Seretary of the Treasury , who forgot to pay his taxes, just asked Congress permission for the politicians to spend ANY amount of money. Right now we owe $16 Trillion and in order to borrow any more the politicians have to ask Congress for approval and Geitner thinks we should give him a blank check and no budget. Pass this on if you don’t want anyone access to your check book.

All of the Republican Congressmen and Senators should pack their bags and go home TODAY. Let the dems do what they want, take us over the cliff and own it. Then, when it is time to raise the debt ceiling, repubs need to man up, stand united and refuse to do it. If our Republican Congressman and Senators can expect our troops to put their lives on the line for the country, then they can can risk their cushy jobs for the country.
If the sequester causes our economy to crash and burn-so be it. If we (adults) live through hard times now, maybe our children and grandchildren will not have to.

We allowed politicians to put us in this position and we think they’ll get us out of it? We’ve created an imperial presidency in which he can simply work around congress and do what he likes ie endless regulations on businesses. The fed is the root of the problem since they can simply create money out of thin air which creates inflation by devaluing the dollar. The politicians will never cut spending and we all know it,they’ll simply slow the rate of growth and call it a cut in spending. The welfare state must be destroyed and never be allowed to return since parasitic lifetime politicians use the ‘poor’ in this country as a hammer on the productive class. Pay your ‘fair share’ BS rhetoric to stir up the so called poor to keep the lifetime politicians in power to continue spending us into oblivion. Keep the freebies coming and we’ll keep you in power,it’s a sick twisted relationship and it’s destroying this country.

@Warp, your comments are spot on. There is a findamental issue with government versus the people, the government has responded to the “need” of caring for it’s citizens. This occoured out of innocence back in the day, out of neccessity if you will. Along the way, however, power hungry politicians saw a way to exploit this to maintain the political possition they covent so much. What started as a noble and proper idea, turned into a very nasty struggle for power. The government has the mentality that , we the people, are not smart enough or capable of providing for ourselves. Unfortnunatley they are 53% correct. So instead of only having a function of protecting our borders and those that reside inside them, it has morphed into a power grab and twisted thoughts.

The only option is to let the destruction commence, let the strong survive, and hopefully the survivors can start again. Albeit if China, MBH, or the likes does not gain control in the meantime. God help us all.

    No.

The fiscal cliff is the result of government doing exactly what I have NEVER asked them to do, in fact have rallied against at every opportunity, while stealing my money against my consent to do these things. Then, they borrow more money after extracting as much as they can from my hide, and I’m charged with paying the interest for their borrowing against my will. And then they spend more with that credit line on programs I continue to actively be against.

Then, when everything comes to a head, they blame me, tell me I need to give up the rest of what’s left of my labor to them, and promise to reduce their INCREASES sometime, maybe.

I owe these barbarians nothing. I reject their claim that I owe them any ‘debt’ or that I am responsible for their incompetence.

Oh thank you God, oh Thank You God. Three years ago a voice in my head said “you heard about those weirdos stocking up on food and ammo? Well maybe you should start being a weirdo to.”. So I became a weirdo and again, Thank you GOD.
So I’ll sing a little happy song and you can sing along too. Old Dr. Pepper Tune.
I’m a weirdo and your not a weirdo but things around the world are lookin screwed.
I’m a prepper weirdo but your not a prepper weirdo but I bet about now you’d wish you were one too,
So the world falls apart and things are lookin bad I got something to eat and you wish you had so I’m the weirdo too?
So out the door to gather more, I here there’s a special at the store. And from my yard where I prep so hard, I’ll wave to you while you wash your car and and you’ll think he’s one of those weirdos too.
And I survive and I’m very sure to, your is empty caused you got screwed, So I’ll say a little prayer for you. I know, don’t give up the day job.

Time to take your medicine, Washington. Oh, and your unlimited credit card is being taken away.

It’s called the “Make-It-Work Plan”. Spend less than you take in, and what you spend, spend wisely.

Enough of the accounting hokus pokus.

The American people already hate the establishment GOP, so what’s to lose by calling O’negros bluff? The republicans should hold their ground…….but they’ll probably do exactly the opposite of what is good for the country.

    Prepare for a civil war.

Abracadabra! The credit card isn’t going away. They’ll just make you think they are trying to be responsible… why.. “It takes time to resolve these things..why if we started being responsible right away.. the earth would open up and swallow us, the skies would fall, the seas would boil.. you don’t want that, do you? Trust us. We know what we are doing and we know what is best for you..” They
ll raise the debt limit a little bit more ( a few trillion) .. and throw some meager cuts your way, that will be rescinded a few months or a year from now, or be over shadowed by a new obtuse way of spending. It’ll never end until the realities of economics crushes them under its cold hard boot (and us along with it).

I wish I could handle my budget the way Americans are allowing this government (as a whole) to handle our countries budget. What a joke.

Sadly GhostOfJefferson, we are becoming the minority thinkers in this nation. I am only 30 years and already I can’t recognize this nation from wha it was growing up as a child. I guess it is all part of His will and I pray that His plan will play itself out.

      @Pray

I don’t think we’re the minority. I think they want us to feel like the minority. Even if I am in the minority, that’s fine. I am a Militia of One. If I’m the last man in this damned country, then so be it.

Yeah, only 30 and yes, there have been huge changes. Should have been around when I was in high school, compared to today it seems like a mythical time of liberty. And my elders tell me that I grew up not knowing freedom like they knew.

And not one person, not one, stood up and said “no more, no further, I stand here and will not give another inch” to stop us from landing here. Sadly, not even I did. Meh, bad mood today.

We don’t need 13 ways to visualize the ‘fiscal cliff’.
Just one~ “If you quadrupled the Obama tax on the top 5% of wealthy Americans it wouldn’t make a dent in the deficit”……..
Obama will spend another 6.7 billion during the next 4 years.
    Only one solution; IMPEACHMENT.

    revisionist history already….

“The other half wanted the government to spend less and pay the money back that way”

Not true. The other half wanted to lower tax rates and leave spending alone….Thats what their candidate, Mitt Romney said.

I find it funny all of the so called fiscal hawks are out in full force now. They wouldnt be saying anything had Romney been elected. Romney’s budget wasnt going to lower the deficit either. I just hear Hannity talking on the radio about fiscal sanity. It just ****** me off now.

I predict a deal will be made by the GOP caving. It will fail in horrible fashion when more go unemployed due to the increase on taxes job creators. We will continue to spend money like no ones business and have total economic collapse within the next four years. It will all be blamed on capitalism.

It’s obvious what’s happening here. It has been planned for years. What’s that you ask? It is the systematic process of overloading the government, the people, the judicial system and every other facet of the modern societal structure with so many insurmountable obstacles of which have been all catered and specifically designed to attack their designated targets and bring them to a grinding catastrophic collapse. Yeah, I know millions will die most from either murder or starvation. But, when the big die-off is over a new and improved government will step in and we’ll start all over again. You idiots out there that actually voted for this mess, though it probably didn’t really matter anyway, you, living in the big cities, getting that check each month from Uncle Sam, you will be the first to go. It’s pure genius. Twisted, despicable, UN-Godly, evil genius. My hats off to them as it looks like they are about to pull it off.
