Could ‘Temper Tantrums’ Soon Be Considered Mental Illness? American Psychiatrists to Vote on Major Changes

(Photo: Shutterstock)
(TheBlaze/AP) — For the first time in almost two decades the nation’s psychiatrists are changing the guidebook they use to diagnose mental disorders. Among the most controversial proposed changes: Dropping certain familiar terms like Asperger’s disorder and dyslexia and calling frequent, severe temper tantrums a mental illness.
The board of trustees for the American Psychiatric Association voted Saturday in suburban Washington, D.C., on scores of revisions that have been in the works for several years. Details will come next May when the group’s fifth diagnostic manual is published.
The trustees made the final decision on what proposals made the cut; recommendations came from experts in several task force groups assigned to evaluate different mental illnesses.
Board members were tightlipped about the update, but its impact will be huge, affecting millions of children and adults worldwide.
The manual “defines what constellations of symptoms health care professionals recognize as mental disorders and more importantly … shapes who will receive what treatment. Even seemingly subtle changes to the criteria can have substantial effects on patterns of care,” said Dr. Mark Olfson, a Columbia University psychiatry professor who was not involved in the revision process.
The manual also is important for the insurance industry in deciding what treatment to pay for, and it helps schools decide how to allot special education.
The guidebook’s official title is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The new one is the fifth edition, known as the DSM-5. A 2000 edition made minor changes but the last major edition was published in 1994.
The manual “seeks to capture the current state of knowledge of psychiatric disorders. Since 2000 … there have been important advances in our understanding of the nature of psychiatric disorders,” Olfson said.
Expected changes include formally adopting a term for children and adults with autism – “autism spectrum disorder,” encompassing those with severe autism, who often don’t talk or interact, and those with mild forms including Asperger’s. Asperger’s patients often have high intelligence and vast knowledge on quirky subjects but lack social skills.
Some Asperger’s families opposed the change, fearing their kids would lose a diagnosis and no longer be eligible for special services. And some older Asperger’s patients who embrace their quirkiness vowed to continue to use the label.
But experts say the change won’t affect the special services available to this group.
Other proposed changes include:
-A new diagnosis – disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, which critics argued would medicalize kids’ normal temper tantrums, and possibly relieve them of the responsibility of their own actions. Supporters said it would address concerns about children being misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder and treated with powerful psychiatric drugs. Bipolar disorder involves sharp mood swings from feeling sad and depressed to unusually happy or energetic, and affected children are sometimes irritable or have explosive tantrums. The new diagnosis would be given to children and adults who can’t control their emotions and have frequent temper outbursts in inappropriate situations.
-Eliminating the term “dyslexia,” a reading disorder that causes difficulty understanding letters and recognizing written words. The term would be encompassed in a broader learning disorder category.
-Eliminating the term “gender identity disorder.” It has been used for children or adults who strongly believe that they were born the wrong gender – they dispute their normal biological anatomy. But many activists believe the condition isn’t a disorder and say calling it one is stigmatizing. The term would be replaced with “gender dysphoria,” which means emotional distress over one’s gender. Supporters equated the change with removing homosexuality as a mental illness in the diagnostic manual, which happened decades ago.
What do you think?

The APA makes decisions based more on political and social biases than on any objective science. They did the same in regards to homosexuality in the 70′s.

I think w/this one, they want to drug the kids who spout off w/temper tantrums instead of letting Moms and Dads spank the temper back into control. My Mom’s favorite response to my ill humor was to turn the hose on me if we were outside or haul my noisy **** to the cold shower. First they make it “inappropriate” to discipline children so that they all throw temper tantrums when they don’t get their way, next they catalog it as mental illness. Who need to pass further gun control laws. It’s already illegal to own a gun if you suffer from mental illness, we have drones and cameras all over America, they’ll catch every kid born in the country throwing a tantrum at some time in their lives and no one can ever own a gun. (REMEMBER, THEY NOW ARE DIAGNOSING BIPOLAR DISORDER AT 6 MONTHS OF AGE TO MAKE SURE THE INFANT GETS PROPER TREATMENT!)

May God reward your mom! I remember the day I spent hours getting my kids (4) all ready to go someplace dressy, I had them all combed, curled, dressed to the hilt and shoes shining, in the car and went back to make sure something was unplugged, they had a mud fight. I threw all 4 in the shower clothes and all and began scrubbing. I only had to give each one about 2 “mean showers” after that, kids learn. 3 of my 4 were hyperactive, we watched the diets and controlled with discipline, at about 13 the metabolism slowed so they liked naps, and they all learned self discipline! Not easy but it can be done. Number 4 was a genius (literally) and not about to let them outdo him, he’d always think of something.

As a 2nd grader my teacher would stand me in the fire escape for getting in trouble, I always got in trouble right before spelling class on Friday! She decided to bring in an old fashioned shoe store mirror and if we got in trouble we had to look in the mirror and slap ourselves in the face 10 times, if not hard enough she’d take our hand and help us do it. The other kids made fun of you, AND it hurt. I learned to be a good speller real quick, and quit getting into trouble.

Psychology has been granted science status way too early in its development. You can not really do good science because the experiments would be unethical: Spank a hundred kids for improper behavior and don’t spank a hundred kids ever and test the results. This would not be a legal experiment and I would not trust Liberals to interpret the data. It is OK, however, to create a generation of narcissist by phoney self-esteem pumping by authority figures. I think if you are constantly throwing a fit and getting your way as a result of it, it is just a coping strategy that works.

Once any sort of bogus link is made to a genetic marker they will claim that no one who has this link will be allowed access to guns. As it is now every child born in the US has DNA taken and info about that DNA goes into a data bank (which now is the fed’s). They are planning to do genome mapping on all kids. PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO ALL STUDIES THAT ARE BEING DONE TODAY TO IDENTIFY GENETIC CAUSES OF PROBLEMS. The new one now is that they claim obesity can be identified in infants –before they become obese. The obese will be the first to have to pay for everything because they will be declared to be “free-riders” if they dont…. after all…. the collective is now paying for their health costs. Pay close attention to these new diagnosis codes!

I once read a comment in Marginal Revolutions.com. The poster who is a regular & a friend of the blogger (If I remember correctly), said he didn’t believe that complex behaviour such same sex attraction was genetic. I agree with his assessment. I can’t believe that temper tantrums need to be medicalized. that is just a head strong individual who has gotten their way up to that point. With a number of rebukes by parents or peers they will stop as it doesn’t gain them anything. There is no need for the APA to turn it into a revenue generator. Their might be marker that makes a person slightly more head strong or egotistical. But it is also a product of social status, upbringing & experience. As so many people have pointed out on this page parents use to take care of this but are generally no longer allowed. A person who throws temper tantrums could only be influenced by hens by 33% to 66%. In reality it is much less than that.
People who are intellectuals told us in the 1980s that the concept of Romantic love was a Western concept & that it was absent form other cultures. a decade later they said they were mistaken. A simple survey of literature would have shown them otherwise. The psychologists are drawn from the same crows as the intellectuals who spouted the nonsense about Romantic Love.

No wonder people seem more susceptible to quack medical treatment. The medical establishment keeps doing stuff like this that strips credibility from the medical scientific community….

Posted on December 1, 2012 at 4:34pmNo it shouldn’t be classified as a mental illness as it is kids not getting their way. Well not just kids as it could be any politician by the way they act sometimes.

C’mon now… do we have to give the 1 million Mary Johnson voters and the rest of the Obama enabling fringe crowd from the supposed liberty and freedom ranks a NEW excuse for bad behavior and let them off the hook??

Posted on December 1, 2012 at 5:05pmLONG. I guess you didn’t get the humor in my comment (because it applies to you maybe?).
Anyways, in answer to your question / statement.
Yes, that’s why I come to The Blaze. For mostly political commenting / slapping around “irrelevant” morally repugnant libertarians” and other alledged Libertarians. But mostly… Rothbard and Ron Paul islolationist / cowardly Libertarians. Which one are you?
Oh, and how am I doing btw? Lol.

Posted on December 1, 2012 at 5:21pmYou keep boxing me into the GJ crowd even though I didn’t vote for him? I think he had more in common with Obamney than RP. I actually think Ron Paul and Rothbart are the exact opposite because one is for the barest government, while the other is for zero government. Anarcho-capitalism are two completely conflicting ideologies because nothing exists in anarchy other than anarchy. I do like reading their critique of government though. You can’t just say everything somebody does is evil. that would be foolish.
btw, you dodged a bullet because I was thinking about relocating to the Tampa area after I thought I found opportunity, but then reality kinda set in. Way too hot for me anyway. you’re welcome.

Posted on December 1, 2012 at 5:54pmawwwww are you threatening me? are you taller than me? doubt it. are you bigger than me? doubt it. are you anywhere near me in age? doubt it. You remind me of a much older Clint Eastwood in that terrible army movie Heartbreak Ridge. see, keyboard tough talk is fun!
btw I stayed at Indian shores and loved the heck out of it because it cracked me up with its Jimmy Buffett theme and not taking anything too seriously. But you know what they say about Florida – traveling is not the same as living there. Plus, I enjoy not getting sunburnt when I get the mail.
I left one of my socks there. I guess that should last you about 3 minutes. lol.

Posted on December 1, 2012 at 4:31pmIf they vote yes for tantrums being a mental illness, we’ve lost this society. All children will throw a tantrum every once in awhile. the question is more about, how will the parent handle that temper of theirs. Old school moms were the best. They’ll beat their kids in the store if it came down to it. My mom only had to look at me to make me straighten up. todays moms are…..weak in that area. they want to be the child’s friend, and so, the child likely thinks it’s okay to express themselves when there’s something they don’t like.
Funny, I could have replaced “Child” with “Liberal” and it still would have applied….

Posted on December 1, 2012 at 6:49pmThat’s because mentally liberals are stunted children. 5 year old mind (behaviorally) in whatever aged body.

Posted on December 1, 2012 at 4:31pmI knew a few psychiatrists in training in college. They were messed up. So, I don’t really put much worth on anything they have to say. Also, their field is driven by the pharmaceutical companies who want everyone to be on drugs.

Posted on December 1, 2012 at 4:51pmMany in these fields of… ahem… “medicine” are as Liberal, Progressive, anti-war, and anti-Military as you can get. The sad part is that they are “working” with our Veterans daily and many can’t seem to separate their ideological leanings from the help they are being asked to give. Sorta’ like this country’s educational system. They think it’s an added benefit when they give you their professional AND personal views…

Posted on December 1, 2012 at 6:52pmKnew some psychiartrists/psychilogists too. All of them were effed up people that studied their (respective) field to “fix” their own problem.
