Poll: 51 Percent of Americans Support Same-Sex Marriage

With LGBT issues taking up an increasing portion of the national political dialog, a new poll from CBS News finds that 51 percent of Americans nationwide think same-sex marriage should be legal, with 40 percent believing it should not.
The American public’s views on allowing same-sex couples to marry are the same as they were in September, but support for same-sex marriage has risen since the spring and summer of this year.
There is a generational divide on this issue. Young Americans (those ages 18-29) are some of the strongest proponents of allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry. Seventy-two percent of them support it, as do a majority –albeit a smaller one– of Americans ages 30-44. However, support for same-sex marriage drops to 44 percent among those who are age 45-64 and even further to just a third of Americans age 65 and over. In fact, 56 percent of seniors oppose permitting same-sex couples to marry.
The CBS News Poll also finds more women (53 percent) than men (48 percent) think same-sex marriage should be legal.
This past November voters in Maine and Maryland made their states the first to legalize same-sex marriage through a popular vote ballot initiative. As of now, same-sex marriage is legal in nine states in addition to the District of Columbia.
During their regular Friday conference this week, the nine Supreme Court justices discussed whether or not to take up a case involving same-sex marriage through appeals to the Defense of Marriage Act or California Proposition 8. While it was widely expected by court watchers that the nine would announce that they would take a case on the issue, no action was made. The court can still release orders this Monday or next Friday on the matter.
On Friday, the “Real News” panel discussed in detail the debate regarding whether or not same-sex marriage can be protected by the Constitution.

Posted on December 1, 2012 at 11:00pmInteresting dilemma. 51% say they agree with Gay Marriage. I must assume then the greater majority of parents don’t want legitimate offspring genetically created from their own lineage. A future generation of bastard grandchildren not of their own.
We have prided ourselves in the past of who we were and where we came from. Our so called misfit society cannot claim such luxury when “shaken not stirred” genetically modified couples cannot answer that most important question of their origin.
Mommies, where did I come from? Who is my Daddy?
We can’t tell you. We had a sperm donor. We can tell you though, it was a grand beaker it was.
Gee, mommies I read in the past all kids had Mom’s & Dad’s.
Sorry, birth child, we have progressed past those awful days of insufferable parentage of icky Man & Women relationships.

Posted on December 1, 2012 at 11:48pmYou DO realize that you can support equal rights for a discriminated against minority without actually BEING a part of that minority, right?
I mean, it’s not like the whole country was suddenly majority black when we decided that MAYBE owning other human beings as property wasn’t such a great moral institution, what the Bible said about it notwithstanding, and then suddenly reverted to being overwhelmingly white after slavery ended. And it’s not like during desegregation or the civil rights movement, a bunch of white people just up and vanished prior to these events making blacks the majority during them.
Some people actually DO care about injustice, even when they aren’t ones it is being directed against.
You don’t really think any where close to 51% of the population if homosexual do you? (although, if that many or more were bisexual or pansexual, this country would be a much nicer, and probably much less angry, place to live in).

The family is the foundation of society. Two gay people CANNOT procreate!!! This is the death of society. Sure, in the short term – if you want to get technical – gay couples can adopt or bear children with the help of artificial insemination or adoption, but family goes far, FAR, beyond the act of bearing children. The fabric of what constitutes a natural family is what is being sacrificed. Not just being sacrificed, but mocked and scorned in our arrogance, self-importance, and self-absorption. OK then. We make our beds, and we lay in them. It’s called natural consequences. I just hate for me and my children to die as a result of everyone else’s folly.

You say that Christ “abolished” the Old Testament (the old covenants)? No, He came to fulfill them!
The Covenant of Grace (Christ’s dying on the Cross) did nothing to the Old Testament teachings. Why do our Bibles still begin with Genesis and end with Revelation? If Christ did away with all that “old stuff,” we’d be starting with Matthew.
No, the old rules still apply – but you’ve got to understand the Covenants and Dispensations before making such broad statements about the Bible, Christ and what it all means. The Word is not an easy read – it takes a whole lot of patience and understanding to piece it all together. Pulling small segments out just to prove a false point is not a good idea. God doesn’t like that.

If you want to spend any time explaining to God why you think He is wrong, that’s your business- but don’t try telling me that I can ‘support’ it without being part of it. Just another attempt at assuaging a guilty conscience that knows morally something is wrong. Wrong is wrong, whether we ‘accept’ it or not.

The past few generations have not done enough to reiterate the values that makes marriage so important to society. It has been taken for granted. Redefining marriage does not add to the definition; it detracts from it, makes it less important. Additionally, it also supports the idea that men & women are the same, and offer no unique qualities in comparison to the other. This notion, in particular, has proven damaging over time to notions of masculinity as well as femininity in our culture with disastrous effects (anyone notice how devalued boys are in today’s society?).

Most think it was just homosexuality, I think this is very weak. It seems to be more in line with homosexual rape. Not to mention it was many different things.
“Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. They were haughty and did detestable things before me.”
“Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion.” Jude 1:7. Many things fall under “sexual immorality.”
Having said that, I am not saying that simply because S&G are a weak argument against homosexuality means God approves of it. The Bible is pretty clear on this issue and what marriage is and should be.

“Why was Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed? Do we know the reason? Did mankind forget?”
Arrogance. A lot of people want to say it was homosexuality, but it is clearly defined as arrogance and not caring for the poor. The cities themselves were sexually immoral, but that was not the reason given for their destruction.
As for the topic, as a Christian myself I neither support nor condemn gay marriage. If it happens, it happens; as with all things in our society, it is up to society itself to decide. And it does not affect me, my church, or my Christian faith one bit. Marriage in the US is not “Christian” in nature. We allow divorce for all kinds of non-Christian reasons. We allow remarriage of divorcees, although that’s condemned by Christ Himself. Anyone who thinks marriage is a Christian-only act is fooling themselves.
Anyone who would use legislation to ban gay marriage for the sole reason that it’s “contrary to God’s will” is a fundamentalist and a progressive. They’re pro-big government and pro-theocracy. They worry me as much as the liberals do.

Ezekiel 16:49-50 is quoted by you and that is fine but that is not the end of the story. It would be good to read Ezekiel 16:1-63 to get the context of the situation.
Was old Sodom really Jerusalem’s “sister”? No, Sodom was never in a sister relationship Jerusalem.
In Isaiah 1:8-10 Jerusalem is likened to Sodom to indicate how Jerusalem’s rulers were “dictators of Sodom”. But the old Sodom was long ago destroyed.
In Revelation 11:3, 8 says that the corpses of God’s “two witnesses” lay in the broad way of the great city ‘called in a spiritual sense Sodom and Egypt.
Sodom, two witnesses, broad way, Egypt, sister, all these are figurative illustrations to explain situations.
In Ezekiel 16, we see how God loved Jerusalem, her prostitution and how it was exposed by God, Jerusalem’s punishment as an adulterer, how Samaria was more innocent than Jerusalem was. The reference to Sodom was to illustrate how Jerusalem was, spiritually, acting sinfully in God’s eyes.

Your likening Jerusalem to Sodom is fine as well, but if you look at the specific sins, arrogance is the first and foremost for Sodom. Other cities might have been destroyed for different reasons, and they might have connections with Sodom, but Sodom’s first sin was arrogance, not caring for its people, and selfishness. That is the specific reason, as told by God Himself, for its destruction.
In other words, it’s fine to say “Sodom, like its sister cities, was full of sin.” That’s true. But if you’re looking for what the sin was that led to Sodom’s destruction, it was arrogance… not homosexuality, as is commonly blamed.

Posted on December 1, 2012 at 11:34pmHe’s probably relying on the, discredited, research by Paul Cameron for the Family Research Council (I don’t know if that’s what they were called when he did the “studies”) whom even the bastards at the FRC won’t associate with anymore (although they disseminate his research without citations whenever it suits their agenda). That’s who it almost invariably is when they are making junk science claims suspiciously absent a citation.
More to the point though–even IF it were all true that homosexuality was invariably a direct cause of decreased life expectancy, it would still be no MORALLY different than, say, smoking, drinking, or ANY OTHER RISKY CHOICE. It would STILL not constitute a MORAL argument justifying the imposition of LEGAL discrimination against those people who made the risk-benefit analysis and decided the cost (to THEMSELVES and themselves alone!) was worth it. It’s funny how one needs only resort to a simple analysis a CONSERVATIVE would usually use of the situation (but oddly doesn’t apply in the case of homosexuality), even ASSUMING the BEST CASE scenario for the conservative’s factual claims, to show how patently absurd their position is.
Usually, conservatives are the FIRST people to make “harm principle” arguments for liberty–funny the exceptions they seem so willing to make.

This makes news and propaganda taking that agenda forward seem that all of America has that mind set… not so… we knew that the gay agenda was going to run wild after the election….

You can have your ceremony, that’s not what this is about. This is about legally being considered married by the government as it holds different benefits than a civil union.
I’m an Agnostic and I was “Married” so it’s obviously not a religious term of use or requires a religious ceremony for the government to consider someone married.

Posted on December 2, 2012 at 5:10amsumnonstultus-I get what you’re saying, but some of that is actually true. Personally, I think gay marriage should be legal as long as churches aren’t forced to perform the ceremonies. Anyway, as an example, cervical cancer goes up big time in women who have had genital warts. People who engage in anal sex have a higher instance of colon cancers/rectal cancers. My point is that cancer can be caused by other things besides the genes being present at birth. AIDS is obviously higher among the gay population, etc. As an argument against gay marriage, a higher cost of medical care doesn’t cut it. Women have babies, that increases medical costs. Bottom line for me, God is the judge, not us! If He has a problem with it, He will deal with it.

Are you assuming heterosexual women give as many blow jobs as homosexuals? It was relatively uncommon in last few generations actually. With some feminists saying it was an example of male dominance over them, as few men would reciprocate. Thus they were against the practice. Also it also fell under sodomy laws in many states, and thus was something considered generally detestable.
Chances are considering that there has been an increase in blowjIbs in grade schools, given time that generation will be having a high rate of cancer when they reach their middle years. It’s a new social experiment in the making, and the outcome will take decades.

Posted on December 2, 2012 at 6:19amAlso one question to ask, is if anyone is practicing risky behaviour, that affects health… Should everyone else have to support that person’s lifestyle? This goes back to the question, should people be supporting other people’s abortions, and birth control? Or why does everyone else have to pay for the treatments of those who exhibit other forms of destructive behaviour including all related health risks related to promiscuity in both hetero and homosexual sex.
It’s a myth to say other people’s behaviors have no impact on other people’s lives, when in fact through taxation it does.
According to a gay guy who took the risk to date someone with HIV (because of ‘love’), and still got AIDS despite practicting ‘safe sex’;
http://gaylife.about.com/cs/hivaids1/a/hivstory.htm
“I am also acutely aware that I probably will need some public assistance in the future to afford the cost of the drugs I am now taking. The average cost of HIV medications is over $35,000 a year!”
Should other people have to pay the dime for a heterosexual couple in the same situation?

We have two separate groups here, ****- versus heterosexual: two subsets of sexually active people who engage in different kinds of intercourse. Your statement, Vox, raises the following question: where has that “male member” been? How many times? With whom?
This is not bias, this is nature and fact. Ask any medical specialist about blood “cleanliness”, and then ask which sexual group (based on promiscuity and certain sexual practices) has the greatest number of blood-borne pathogens, including viruses that cause cancer. The facts speak for themselves.

It is an issue that I believe needs to be looked at closely and that is what happens to the deceased estate in the case of not having a will in a same-sex marriage. Look into it if you want because i have to get out of here before you Hemmingways hit me with a spit ball. Why should one group have to pay for another groups; gluttony, laziness, lust, envy, greed, pride, or anger?

Posted on December 2, 2012 at 12:15amRev and Ashes,
Christians need to be much smarter when engaging social issues. With same sex marriage, the SSM proponent’s own rationale to allow it dictates that redefining marriage is a right. Attack their flawed reasoning instead of quoting scripture.
When you quote scripture, you change the subject to religion, when it should be a legal and political issue. When you change the subject to religion, they can evade their own flawed reasoning and you play right into their hand of stereotyping Christians.
Unless Christians get better at debating this issue ssm will be legal in all 50 states within ten years. Once that happens, you will start to see “anti discrimination” or hate speech laws start popping up that will allow the government to directly attack the church.

Posted on December 2, 2012 at 6:12pmDear SUMNONSTUNTUS, “Voluntary” means one can use the faculty of will to partake –or not– in a behavior. “Voluntary” implies the human ability and willingness to assess risk before making a choice.
Promiscuity, engaging in ‘particular’ sexual practices, shooting up IV drugs are all risky behaviors with potential unwitting victims. As a microbiologist, you should know this better than anyone else! I love arguing with smug people who are credentialed (perhaps beyond their intelligence), who then threaten you with their credentials.
Per your reference, smoking is not the sole cause of lung cancer, as you well know. Cancer can appear without apparent cause. So let’s research that! Presently, we do know that HIV does NOT appear spontaneously. It is viral —> so far at least, we know the modes of transmission, which do not include sneezing or casual contact.
Big question for you: In addition to research, if a LETHAL disease is transmitted to unwitting victims by VOLUNTARY behaviors, do we not have an obligation to address or criticize those behaviors?
Side note: Surely you’re aware that when HIV struck Cuba, they initially screened and then quarantined people with the disease: as in, compulsory isolation in a sanatorium. They softened their stance somewhat in the mid ’90s, but the sanatorium system still exists there. Well, it’s Cuba after all, and they claim a low incidence of the disease in the general population (at least that’s what they say).

The republican party needs the support of the religious right, but they need to keep the religious right from controlling the platform. Gay marriage is a losing issue for republicans, I pray they drop it and focus on fiscal responsibility. Then, they can win.

Posted on December 1, 2012 at 11:22pm“So what other values should I give up. How about abortion,”
I am going to assume by that you mean “should I support allowing abortion?” to which the answer is a resounding YES.
“use of any types of recreational pharmaceuticals,”
(1) Not all illegal drugs are pharmaceuticals (in fact, the best ones aren’t)
(2) And the answer to your question is yes–virtually no recreational drugs should be illegal. It’s absolutely idiotic to think this does a damn thing to dissuade people who genuinely think its a good idea to use them not to, or does a damn thing to help those who are ALREADY addicted to such substances, but WOULDN’T like to keep doing them, to quit. All it does is fill jails and cost tax money. The exceptions should be things like PCP which invariably create substantial risks to others–any other kind of recreational drug either is perfectly fine if you are a responsible user, or if not would be better controlled and discouraged if treated like a disease rather than a crime.
“euthanize the elderly and handicapped,”
If they want to be and contract with a licensed physician, yes they have the right to die on their own terms.
“not pay back loans,”
No (unless you can’t–then, we ALREADY allow that, it’s called BANKRUPTCY).
“I know limit the number of children”
Impractical, but not a bad idea–the world WOULD be a much better place if people were more responsible and informed when it came to their reproduction.

————-
I’m not PURAVIDA56, but I would suggest you give up any “values” that doesn’t allow people to live their lives the way they would like. As long as it doesn’t negatively effect others. We should start with a constitution that intends for government to be limited in power, and have a primary purpose of protecting the individual liberties of the citizens. Government should not make up silly laws meant to exclude certain people in society.

Damn sure–72%, boy are conservatives screwed on this issue! I think that’s why there’s so much skepticism about this poll here–because THIS audience is on average in the demographics were support for gay marriage ISN’T the majority, so of course they commit the “universe is me” fallacy which is very easy to make, and assume that it MUST not be true that ANY demographic, or the aggregate demographic, is FOR gay marriage, because THEIR’S isn’t. But they’re wrong, and they are only going to get MORE wrong as time goes on.

The Third Archon
Posted on December 1, 2012 at 11:01pmIs it a miracle? IS it?! Because if you really think about it, as much as it would suck for heterosexual men, if only 10% of women were available as partners for natural reproduction, then the quality of the gene pool would see a MASSIVE upsurge as the remaining straight women would have FAR more selection power to choose only the most exceptional human males–physically attractive, strong, incredibly intelligent, in other words, true exemplars of humanity. And as far the homosexual women, since only one half of the couples’ genes CAN be used in the child anyway, they already have every incentive to evaluate the male contribution purely on genetic quality grounds.
So on a personal level, 90% of women being homosexual would DEFINITELY suck for the majority of men (ceteris paribus), but from a biological perspective, in the long-run we might become a much more impressive species.
But that’s just, slightly humorous, slightly serious, idle speculation.

Posted on December 2, 2012 at 1:46amsoybomb- no it’s not a miracle at all. There a lot of good qualities in men that are not in women. Frankly, even though I’m straight I get along with guys FAR more than women. Women generally don’t share the same interests as me, many don’t like the same things as me. And though I’m not sexually attracted to men, in my opinion men are built better. And also, the beginning comment talks about hairy asses which yes is obviously a turnoff but women like guys who take care of themselves and what not. So again, it’s not really a miracle at all.

Because I might be in the minority does not bother me a bit. Bible stories and predictions most often show that it is a minority that are saved from destruction while the evil majority perishes.
I’m amazed by the boldness of sin these days without any bit of humility. It’s really scary because I believe that we have really arrived to the time where things are as Jesus said that things will be like they were before the flood. Evil prevails and the end is coming. Maranatha.

Posted on December 1, 2012 at 10:38pmI love how quickly the majoritarian rhetoric is abandoned when conservatives no longer hold the majority on an issue–so long as they think they have 50%+1 conservatives will bang on all day invoking the argumentum ad populum endlessly with a mantra of “majority rules!” as if it were an inviolable sacred law. But the second they think they’ve LOST the “+1″ of 50%+1, suddenly they all remember the argumentum ad populum is a fallacy and instead insist they have always had a sacred and inviolable right to do, or not do, whatever it is their minority position now is.
You’ve at least got to give them credit–they sure are strategically wily when it comes to politics.

Yup, sounds like Christianity to me,
Then you get, “WELL YOU CAN’T BLAME THAT ON CHRISTIANITY ITSELF!”
I had someone tell me, “they tried to release their slaves, but it was against the law!”
Obviously our founders didn’t really care that much about being disobedient and fighting for a just cause because they REBELLED against the crown over their grievances.

Posted on December 2, 2012 at 8:24am@MODERATION Lest you forget, slavery was a WORLDWIDE PHENOMENON up until the 19th century. What that means is, it occurred everywhere on the planet where organized communities existed. It was around since the dawn of mankind, and it affected ALL peoples. Dark, light, Euro-, Asian, Arab, Egyptian, African; it happened everywhere and was an integral element in societies that required cheap labor. Slavery and indentured servitude began to erode due to mechanization (>>>Thanks, you clever scientist-engineer-type problem solvers!!! <<<) and because of growing awareness and condemnation in the wake of the Enlightenment. (And which societies birthed the Enlightenment and most of the mechanical inventions that freed people from manual labor…???)
Keep that in mind while you sit through your 100-level American History courses.
