NFL Player Shoots and Kills Girlfriend, Then Drives to Team Practice Facility and Commits Suicide

Police say Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher fatally shot his girlfriend early Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, in Kansas City, Mo., then drove to Arrowhead Stadium and committed suicide in front of his coach and general manager. (AP File Photo)
Police say 25-year-old Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend Saturday morning then drove to the team’s Arrowhead Stadium and killed himself in front of his coach and general manager.
The girlfriend was 22-year-old Kasandra Perkins. She and Belcher had a 3-month-old daughter. Police have not released a motive for the shootings, but Belcher’s mother said her son and Perkins had been arguing recently, according to ESPN.
Police said the first shooting was reported at a Kansas City, Mo. home at approximately 8 a.m. Police spokesman Darin Snapp told the Associated Press that authorities received a call from a woman who said her daughter had been shot multiple times. The caller was actually Belcher’s mother, who had recently moved in with the couple, but referred to Perkins as her daughter.
The second shooting happened a short time later in a parking lot at the Chiefs training facility adjacent to Arrowhead Stadium. Snapp said police had received a second 911 call from the training facility.
“The description matched the suspect description from that other address. We kind of knew what we were dealing with,” he said.
Snapp said police witnessed a black male in a car holding a handgun to his head and talking to Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli and coach Romeo Crennel. That’s when officers heard a gunshot.
Belcher thanked Pioli and Crennel for what they had done for him before turning the gun on himself, Snapp said. He said the men told police they never felt they were in any danger.
“They said the player was actually thanking them for everything they’d done for him,” he said. “They were just talking to him and he was thanking them and everything. That’s when he walked away and shot himself.”
Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said in a statement the entire organization was “deeply saddened” by the “unthinkable tragedy.”
“The entire Chiefs family is deeply saddened by today’s events, and our collective hearts are heavy with sympathy, thoughts and prayers for the families and friends affected by this unthinkable tragedy. We sincerely appreciate the expressions of sympathy and support we have received from so many in the Kansas City and NFL communities, and ask for continued prayers for the loved ones of those impacted,” Hunt said. “We will continue to fully cooperate with the authorities and work to ensure that the appropriate counseling resources are available to all members of the organization.β
A game Sunday between Kansas City and the Carolina Panthers at Arrowhead Stadium was still scheduled to go forward as planned.

Posted on December 1, 2012 at 1:30pmI think its all the anti depressants the doctors are giving people. I have a bad disc in my back from my para rescue days in the Airforce and the doctor was wanting to give me anti depressants for my back she said it would help with the pain. I told her no thanks, Almost everybody who comes in they try to put on that stuff.

Posted on December 1, 2012 at 7:35pmThere is an epidemic of doctors prescribing these horrible drugs to people, especially children. Between ritalin for the fake disease of ADHD to abilify for depression, I now think of psychiatrists and doctors as legal drug dealers who are no better then the illegal ones on the streets.
I recently started reading a book titled “Medication Madness” by Peter R. Breggin, MD who exposes the death and destruction that psychiatric drug prescriptions are causing to the lives of those who take them. He also discusses the symbiotic relationship between doctors, the corrupt FDA and the and the unethical pharmaceutical industry.

Posted on December 2, 2012 at 10:10amor abuse of pain killers. My husband was in the VA Hospital and they prescribed him 10/325 Hydrocodones every 4 hours. His nurse would come in an hour early (probably happened to be up and didn’t want to make another trip) and tried to push a pain pill. I have a peripheral medical background (most of my family is in the medical field and I’ve had a child with lots of medical problems) and I put him on 5/325′s every 6 hours because he had a wild reaction to coming off the meds.

The only one thinking racist, on here, is you. The rest of us are baffled why someone with a wife, a baby, and a successful, good-paying job would throw it all away, and you are on here trying to catch someone with a racist comment. That shows us how pathetically sick progressive thinking is.
You would use tragedy for your own twisted, how did Barry put it? “Revenge?”

Posted on December 1, 2012 at 1:25pmeveryone will try to blame concussions, and not the other mind altering things that were done.
there is heresay report of him injuring himself in college over a girl.
the ESPN comments are horrific, and coming in faster than you can read them… sad but exemplary of a nation where more people will gleefully post horrible comments about a situation that has nothing to do with them than be informed about issues of import to the entire nation… no wonder the election went they way that it did, the sheeple are going to the colliseum for the gladiatorial bloodshed.
In short, a player killed his girlfriend, and the mother of his newborn child… there is ZERO reason to do that.
He then took his own life instead of facing up to what he had done. And in doing so expanded the damage of his act, because he was selfish and likely devastated at what he had done.
It is HIS fault. not concussions or steroids or ansent parents or a cheating girlfriend. HIM. He will have to stand up for that in the next world.
But at a host of levels it is a demonstration of many of the things wrong with this country today.
Condolences to his family, his child, his girlfriend’s family, and the team, who will be hurting and conflicted over what happened.

Posted on December 2, 2012 at 8:52pmIf it’s true what you said about his having hurt himself in college over a girl, and the coaches knew it, then clearly he has some history of mental instability. I wonder if that was addressed by anyone? I think it’s also interesting that his mom referred to the girlfriend as her daughter in the 911 call. This is a curious family dynamic. Wonder if mom was confirming erratic behavior in her son, and siding with the girlfriend? At any rate, I feel for the families and for the poor baby who’s going to grow up without parents.

Posted on December 1, 2012 at 12:52pmIn the end it may have something to do with Male postpartum depression heightened by brain damage by repeated concussion. Other reports have it as linebacker Jovan Belcher, he became a father in September. Lets hope the baby is okay with the “grandma” who found the mother.
This may lead to huge ripples for years if it has anything to do with football injures over just domestic dispute by football player.

Posted on December 1, 2012 at 12:45pmAlthough I live in KC, I don’t follow the Chiefs or any of the NFL, as I find football about as exciting as watching a tiddlywinks tournament. I don’t know about the other teams, but over the years many of the Chiefs players have been in the news due to brushes with the law. Their mindset appears to be “I’m rich and a hometown hero, so I can do whatever I want.” Unfortunately this seems to be true — they seldom suffer significant repercussions for their actions.

Posted on December 1, 2012 at 12:16pmThe sad thing is, things are only going to continue getting worse as our society crumbles. There are too many people not willing to take personal accountability for their own lives and they expect government to be the answer. Family, responsibility, and many healthy, self-guiding values are disappearing. Many are beginning to live without hope. This is a sad story… one that happens all too frequently.
