Girl Bitten While Feeding Dolphin at SeaWorld — Dad Catches it on Camera

An 8-year-old girl was bitten by a dolphin she was feeding at SeaWorld in a frightening moment caught on camera by her father.
The incident occurred during a Nov. 21 visit to SeaWorld Orlando. Jillian Thomas was feeding the dolphins fish when she held up her paper tray and said it was empty. That’s when a dolphin lunged out of the water and sank its teeth into Jillian’s arm, pulling her toward the pool before letting go.
Her father, Jamie Thomas, uploaded the footage to YouTube on Saturday, posting, “We wanted to share this video so others can make an informed decision about whether or not the risks to yourself or your child are worth the experience.”
Thomas told WKMG-TV he quickly rushed to his daughter’s side, fearing she’d be pulled into the water.
“We think that attraction at SeaWorld is dangerous and it was traumatic for us to go through that event,” he said.

He said the bite caused three puncture wounds to Jillian’s arm, adding that she saw a doctor when the family returned home to Atlanta and was doing much better.
In a statement to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, SeaWorld said “nothing is more important to us than the health and safety of our guests, employees and animals” and that it would “certainly take the situation seriously.”
“Educators and animal care staff were at the attraction when this happened and immediately connected with the family,” the statement said. “In addition, a member of our health services team was in the area at Dolphin Cove and quickly responded and treated the young girl. The video had not been previously shared with us and we have not a chance to assess it but certainly take the situation seriously.”

Posted on December 2, 2012 at 1:06pmCan’t blame the dolphin, when the girl held the paper up higher the dolphin went for it. Do hope the little girl is ok and she understands what happened, that the animal was just doing what it has been trained to do. I am sure after MSNBC gets done interviewing the dolphin and it exclusively confesses to them that it was done out of malice the they will have a got cause for a law suit.

Posted on December 2, 2012 at 8:17pmI live on a farm. Nobody anywhere should hand-feed any animals unless they really know what they are doing. It’s potentially dangerous. All hand-fed animals get assertive over food that they’ve come to expect. The little girl held up an empty food tray, so the dolphin had to jump up to get it and her arm was there also. I blame the father for letting the girl feed the animal. I also blame the owners of that animal for setting up the feeding in the first place.
I just hate zoos, aquariums and the like. Animals should be free. If you want to go see an animal, take a drive, at trip, read a book, or watch Animal Planet on TV. Don’t lock up animals for your entertainment.
My sister made the mistake recently during a visit to our farm. She decided to feed our goats some grain by herself. There were 7 goats that mobbed her and knocked her down trying to get at the grain.
When I was a little girl my parents took my sister and I to see some horses. I stayed behind and stuck my finger out at a horses mouth. The horse grabbed my finger tight, never moving. I screamed for my parents and they got my finger out. That horse could have easily bitten off my finger. Even as a little girl I understood that this horse knew exactly what it was doing. I was tormenting the horse with my finger…and the horse taught me a lesson. If that horse had thought my finger was food…it would have bitten off my finger.
Later years I became a horse trainer.

That’s why the dad felt it was so important to get video of the little teeth puncture wounds.
It also sounds like the family was not paying attention when the staff told them not to pick up the white feed trays and hold them up where the dolphins can see it or the dolphins will leap for the tray.
The family either did not pay attention or this staff forgot to mention it, and so I imagine this was scary but it happens at feed farms all over the U.S., because even goats and horses will bite sometimes. It’s just part of the territory when feeding an animal straight out of your hand; they confuse the hand for the food.

There’s always a chance someone gets bit by doing the wrong thing. Posted on December 2, 2012 at 4:31pmGee, someone had good parents! God bless them all. We also got dirty and only washed off the dirt when we came home. Best antibiodic is a little dirt, after all.
“We” toss gobs of female hormones and abortifacients into our water supply every minute and wonder why our drinking water is unsafe. We want everyone to see the wisdom of evolution (OK, that’s fine) and to stop at all cost disturbances to the habitats of fish, bugs and worms (OK, this could get balanced out a bit more, perhaps) while we pollute women’s bodies with gallons of chemicals that are altering/killing downstream life, but because all of these chemicals prevent us from the consequences of our freely taken actions (ie, pregnancy), we blind our eyes and shut our mouths to the harm we create. Hmmmm.
The “funny” thing is that pro-abortionists proclaim their need for “privacy”, “freedom” in making their “choice” to brutally dismember another human being’s life liberty and pursuit of happiness.

Dolphins are very gentle and intelligent creatures. I have interacted with wild dolphins (while surfing) all my life. If they don’t like you they will just remove themselves from the situation.
The only time I had one even act pissed was when I was paddling out and a mother with her baby came up next to me. Next thing I knew another dolphin came up and slapped his / her tail in the water as a warning.
They actually will compete with you for a wave especially during a clean ground swell but never ever become aggressive unless you really did something wrong.

Posted on December 2, 2012 at 12:33pmThis is why parents are to safely monitor children. Put the camera down and monitor your children so that these types of events don’t happen. Children have delayed responses to events, especially when a father is asking questions for a photo op instead of affectively monitoring there children’s activity. I hope this doesn’t go to a jury as I would vote in favor of Sea World

Posted on December 2, 2012 at 1:00pmI agree .. parents let their kids run wild at these attractions . … more often than not videoing them .. are they hoping to catch something on camera so they can sue? You can’t walk from attraction to attraction without someones child running into you …. they have no sense of self preservation .. .. expecting everyone else to look out for them. When I see one headed for me I stop and PLANT MY FEET .. when they hit it is like hitting a brick wall… and definetly NOT my fault. Then I tell them to say excuse me .. because they never do on their own. The kids who are WITH their parents and not running wild are the ones who WOULD .. but they are not the ones running into others.

And your typical Con feels entitled to spread the word of their space god and zombie savior on the tax-payer’s dime (i.e. school). Then they cry when they are told they have to stop.

That is BS and you know it,, the schools are vassals of demoralization controlled by Marxists ideologues to balkanize and cut the cultural bonds that hold a society together. Christianity is a philosophy of morality and virtue which was the foundation of our liberty and freedoms. You don’t need to be a christian to hold those ideals, they have been part of western culture, the attack on Christianity is not an attack on Religion, it is a proxy war on the virtues of liberty and freedoms in Western society. It is ideological subversion of Western values… you don’t need to be religious to figure that out.
Once virtue is destroyed it is replaced with envy, the goal of the Statist.
