Girl Bitten While Feeding Dolphin at SeaWorld — Dad Catches it on Camera

An 8-year-old girl was bitten by a dolphin she was feeding at SeaWorld in a frightening moment caught on camera by her father.

The incident occurred during a Nov. 21 visit to SeaWorld Orlando. Jillian Thomas was feeding the dolphins fish when she held up her paper tray and said it was empty. That’s when a dolphin lunged out of the water and sank its teeth into Jillian’s arm, pulling her toward the pool before letting go.

Her father, Jamie Thomas, uploaded the footage to YouTube on Saturday, posting, “We wanted to share this video so others can make an informed decision about whether or not the risks to yourself or your child are worth the experience.”

Thomas told WKMG-TV he quickly rushed to his daughter’s side, fearing she’d be pulled into the water.

“We think that attraction at SeaWorld is dangerous and it was traumatic for us to go through that event,” he said.

He said the bite caused three puncture wounds to Jillian’s arm, adding that she saw a doctor when the family returned home to Atlanta and was doing much better.

In a statement to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, SeaWorld said “nothing is more important to us than the health and safety of our guests, employees and animals” and that it would “certainly take the situation seriously.”

“Educators and animal care staff were at the attraction when this happened and immediately connected with the family,” the statement said. “In addition, a member of our health services team was in the area at Dolphin Cove and quickly responded and treated the young girl. The video had not been previously shared with us and we have not a chance to assess it but certainly take the situation seriously.”

Can’t blame the dolphin, when the girl held the paper up higher the dolphin went for it. Do hope the little girl is ok and she understands what happened, that the animal was just doing what it has been trained to do. I am sure after MSNBC gets done interviewing the dolphin and it exclusively confesses to them that it was done out of malice the they will have a got cause for a law suit.

This Dolphin just needs glasses or contacts since it has depth perception problem. I bet this family after constant attacks from all the sleezy lawyers around will sue. One of the sleezes will talk them into it after convincing them Sea World will settle out of court and have deep pockets.

I live on a farm. Nobody anywhere should hand-feed any animals unless they really know what they are doing. It’s potentially dangerous. All hand-fed animals get assertive over food that they’ve come to expect. The little girl held up an empty food tray, so the dolphin had to jump up to get it and her arm was there also. I blame the father for letting the girl feed the animal. I also blame the owners of that animal for setting up the feeding in the first place.

I just hate zoos, aquariums and the like. Animals should be free. If you want to go see an animal, take a drive, at trip, read a book, or watch Animal Planet on TV. Don’t lock up animals for your entertainment.

My sister made the mistake recently during a visit to our farm. She decided to feed our goats some grain by herself. There were 7 goats that mobbed her and knocked her down trying to get at the grain.

When I was a little girl my parents took my sister and I to see some horses. I stayed behind and stuck my finger out at a horses mouth. The horse grabbed my finger tight, never moving. I screamed for my parents and they got my finger out. That horse could have easily bitten off my finger. Even as a little girl I understood that this horse knew exactly what it was doing. I was tormenting the horse with my finger…and the horse taught me a lesson. If that horse had thought my finger was food…it would have bitten off my finger.

Later years I became a horse trainer.

Whatever. I was bitten pretty good feeding an ostrich once in a zoo. Comes with the territory. I’ve been bitten feeding dogs, no harm intended on the dog’s part. People sometimes bite other people without meaning any harm, but that’s off-topic.

I hope this didn’t freak out the girl. I also believe the dad’s motivations were good posting the video.

Animals are animals and interactions with any of them aren’t risk free.

When you feed the dolphins at Sea World the staff brings the fish and sits it in front of you and they tell you to NOT pick up the white tray because they don’t want a dolphin jumping for it. You will notice all the people have the trays sitting in front of them. Once done the staff comes by and collects the trays.

Yeah, looks like step number 2 will be to sue.
That’s why the dad felt it was so important to get video of the little teeth puncture wounds.
It also sounds like the family was not paying attention when the staff told them not to pick up the white feed trays and hold them up where the dolphins can see it or the dolphins will leap for the tray.
The family either did not pay attention or this staff forgot to mention it, and so I imagine this was scary but it happens at feed farms all over the U.S., because even goats and horses will bite sometimes. It’s just part of the territory when feeding an animal straight out of your hand; they confuse the hand for the food.

This is no different than feeding a dog some meaty treats. It’s not long before the dog will think every offering from the hand is meat, and will bite down on it until it realizes that it’s not. Then the dog lets go, just like the dolphin did. They’ve been taught the behavior… don’t blame them!

I agree Taintso. Not a malicious act by the dolphin; however, I really don’t think it’s a great idea to have untrained people feeding any animal. There’s always a chance someone gets bit by doing the wrong thing. Love how mom says to the little girl, “We’re not going to show it to anyone” when she was reluctant to show her injuries to the camera and then the parents post it on YouTube. Nice lie Mom. Gee, someone had good parents! God bless them all. We also got dirty and only washed off the dirt when we came home. Best antibiodic is a little dirt, after all.

“We” toss gobs of female hormones and abortifacients into our water supply every minute and wonder why our drinking water is unsafe. We want everyone to see the wisdom of evolution (OK, that’s fine) and to stop at all cost disturbances to the habitats of fish, bugs and worms (OK, this could get balanced out a bit more, perhaps) while we pollute women’s bodies with gallons of chemicals that are altering/killing downstream life, but because all of these chemicals prevent us from the consequences of our freely taken actions (ie, pregnancy), we blind our eyes and shut our mouths to the harm we create. Hmmmm.

The “funny” thing is that pro-abortionists proclaim their need for “privacy”, “freedom” in making their “choice” to brutally dismember another human being’s life liberty and pursuit of happiness.

      I’m NOT kidding.

Naturally, I would tell them yes and that the ducks in the river were actually remote controlled robots that had a vacuum system installed which would suck up the popcorn unsuspecting park guests would feed to them. They would be completely amazed at just how “realistic” the technology at Disney World was. Unbelievable. I still shake my head whenever I think about those days…

Apparently you haven’t heard about dolphins battering porpoises to death for fun while sporting erections (I’m not making that up), or groups of male dolphins holding lone female dolphins as what can only be described as sexual prisoners–and sometimes they kill them when they’re done with them.

      Hi Vance

I was refering to human interaction. Yes they are territorial but not with humans unless there is a baby involved or they are mating and then they will warn in most cases with a tail slap or a good blow of air. I have had them go out of their way to avoid hitting me while jumping out of a wave or chasing mullet.

I promise you that I feel much safer when a pod of dolphin are around me rather than 1 shark.

I wonder what PETA would have to say about this – Seaworld, and the father, are cruel for denying this dolphin the best meal of his life.

      GRILLED DOLPHIN:

      1/2 c. rice vinegar
      Salt if desired

So, a dolphin made a lunge for a food container and accidentally grabbed a girls arm which it quickly release when it realized it’s error. This is an issue why?
Dangerous attraction? More like these weasels smell a lawsuit. The parents should be beaten with lengths of re bar for posting this video in order to “make a point”. Seriously. Beaten with lengths of re bar.

Does not sound like this Dad was too concerned when he waited until they “returned to Atlanta”

Oh poor dear. Hope she’s OK.
Does anyone remember an aquarium called Marineland in SoCal? They had dolphins in similar enclosures…they did not offer fish for feeding them, as far as I can remember. My parents have a picture of me jerking my hand back because a dolphin snapped at me. I was older than this little girl at the time…remember thinking, these guys have teeth, so….

Dad! Your daughter is feeding a wild animal. Simply because the park allows you to do so, doesn’t give you the right to file suit against the park….which is obviously what you’re planning, considering your gathering evidence by filming your daughter’s hand. If I were park management, I would have treated the family to their next meal in the park, and given the girl some free memorabilia…other than that. Deal with it dad. Be a responsible American and teach your daughter that SHE needs to be responsible for her actions, and DON’T SUE!

    Complete accident.
Dolphins are very gentle and intelligent creatures. I have interacted with wild dolphins (while surfing) all my life. If they don’t like you they will just remove themselves from the situation.
The only time I had one even act pissed was when I was paddling out and a mother with her baby came up next to me. Next thing I knew another dolphin came up and slapped his / her tail in the water as a warning.
They actually will compete with you for a wave especially during a clean ground swell but never ever become aggressive unless you really did something wrong.

If you sue, you suck. hope the little girl quickly gets over the bruises and minor injuries. small price to pay to be able to touch and commune with dolphins.

sea world, make sure you put out a notice to move the white trays away from the enclosure when they are empty. watch the video again…the dolphin was just trying to grab the tray because the little girl was waving it in front of its face. it let go when it realized it had a hold of her hand. if it wanted to hurt her, she would be dead.

hopefully the parents are able to have the girl remember this as a war story rather than freaking her out about it. in hindsight, pretty cool…i wish i had been bitten by a dolphin when i was a kid :) (and lived the tell about it, obviously)

Just think about it. Even when I am feeding myself, I have on occasion, bitten my own tongue. You can’t let children feed wild animals. I am for closing all these parks down. A Dolphin does not deserve to be in captivity, ever.

This is why parents are to safely monitor children. Put the camera down and monitor your children so that these types of events don’t happen. Children have delayed responses to events, especially when a father is asking questions for a photo op instead of affectively monitoring there children’s activity. I hope this doesn’t go to a jury as I would vote in favor of Sea World

I agree .. parents let their kids run wild at these attractions . … more often than not videoing them .. are they hoping to catch something on camera so they can sue? You can’t walk from attraction to attraction without someones child running into you …. they have no sense of self preservation .. .. expecting everyone else to look out for them. When I see one headed for me I stop and PLANT MY FEET .. when they hit it is like hitting a brick wall… and definetly NOT my fault. Then I tell them to say excuse me .. because they never do on their own. The kids who are WITH their parents and not running wild are the ones who WOULD .. but they are not the ones running into others.

That is BS and you know it,, the schools are vassals of demoralization controlled by Marxists ideologues to balkanize and cut the cultural bonds that hold a society together. Christianity is a philosophy of morality and virtue which was the foundation of our liberty and freedoms. You don’t need to be a christian to hold those ideals, they have been part of western culture, the attack on Christianity is not an attack on Religion, it is a proxy war on the virtues of liberty and freedoms in Western society. It is ideological subversion of Western values… you don’t need to be religious to figure that out.

Once virtue is destroyed it is replaced with envy, the goal of the Statist.
