NBC’s Bob Costas Interrupts Sunday Night Football With Gun Control Lecture

UPDATES:

Jason Whitlock, the columnist who inspired Costas’ gun control lecture, has now claimed that the “NRA is the new KKK.”  Read about it here.

Fellow sportscaster Jim Gray also offered an endorsement of Costas’ comments during a Monday appearance on Fox. See what he had to add about gun control — and also how fast he backtracked — here.

NBC Sportscaster Bob Costas took a detour from his usual discussion of athletics during Sunday Night Football to lecture his audience on gun control.

Discussing the shocking murder-suicide that rocked the NFL over the weekend, when Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher fatally shot his girlfriend and then committed suicide in front of his coach and general manager, Costas argued that domestic disputes are more likely to end in such a fashion if the government does not limit people’s access to firearms.

Costas said:

Writer Jason Whitlock, with whom I do not always agree but today said it so well that we may as well just quote or paraphrase from the end of his article.

Our current gun culture, Whitlock wrote, ensures that more and more domestic disputes will end in the ultimate tragedy, and that more convenience-store confrontations over loud music coming from a car will leave more teenage boys bloodied and dead.’

Handguns do not enhance our safety. They exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate arguments, and bait us into embracing confrontation rather than avoiding it.

In the coming days, Jovan Belcher’s actions and their possible connection to football will be analyzed. Who knows? But here, wrote Jason Whitlock, is what I believe: If Jovan Belcher didn’t possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today.

He murdered her ,left his daughter parentless and then shot him self ,in front of his coach. The tragedy here is this idiot met his wife and had a child with her .The tragedy is about his dead wife and parentless child .The tragedy here is that a self centered ,heartless idiot took an innocent woman’s life ,then left the stage of life ,for others to to clean up.

There were quite a few nuggets of ivory tower liberal gun ignorance falling out of his face during his lecture. It was outrageous to say that both of these people would still be alive if handguns were banned. Fools like this actually believe that murder-suicides was invented after the invention of the handgun. If he was honest, he would say, “I am afraid of minorities and conservatives having guns and I wish the government would raid homes and take them away from every citizen!”

Thanks, Bob “Soft-Focus” Costas, for turning a terrible, awful tragedy into a platform for your personal political views. Thanks for using the venue of your sports broadcasting job, sitting in front of TV cameras with a microphone in your hand, to inform us of the errors of our ways.

Never mind the fact that domestic violence caused these deaths. Never mind that a knife, fist, or hurled chair could have ended that poor young woman’s life. No, according to “Bob”, we need to discuss firearms… not the hidden strife, nor the violent, improperly channeled impulses behind this tragic ending.

He is just one of the reasons I quit watching the NFL. Perhaps this dimwit should know all the facts before he rushes in to blame a gun. The man had a history of head injuries (go figure) problems with alcohol and drug usage (go figure). But no none of that is even mentioned here. I guess the gun made him an alcohol and drug abuser. And I guess the gun knocked him in the head so many times he just couldn’t control his rage. Read the latest article on Drudge if you want to know the truth. I used to love watching the NFL but now that they have turned it into a false religion I steer clear of it. The NFL analysts and announcers are nothing but a bunch of overblown, full of themselves, gossipy, self worshipers. Anyone who is a bonafide supporter of the 2nd amendment that will still tune into Sunday Night football after this is a fool. For that matter if you tune into any NFL program you are now a fool because with Bob Costas doing this on Sunday Night NFL football that means the NFL endorses his position. Do you really want to support that? Not me brother. Not me.

Sure! If a man kills a woman with a lamp or a knife or pushes her over a cliff and then jumps off a building himself we should consider banning knives and lamps and buildings and cliffs or does the 2nd amendment mean just the right to own guns? And are we not sick and tired of the liberal controlled media telling us all what to think? Isn’t grabbing and pushing another person down considered an assault? We should then ban FOOTBALL. If we all had microphones we all would be heard for the intelligent and sometimes stupid points of view we all have. Costas has been known for making a mockery of the profession by throwing his feces around in the affect of being outspoken and brave. He has never placed himself in a realm of personal responsibility to the effects of football concussions, fulfilling your contract and now violence. Typical NBC liberal douchebag that has never understood how people’s actions are a result of decisions, NOT CHOICES, of how they wish to conduct themselves in criminal behavior. Here is what the MSM will not tell you, nor will the multiculture education system (public schools), if African Americans had the same murder rate as white Americans, we would drop our national murder rate by almost 40%, making us have one of the lowest rates in the free world.

Blacks make up 12% of the population, but do half of the nations murders. That is what makes our murder rates so high.

First of all, a tragedy is a boat sinking. This was nothing more than a drugged out alcohol induced rage by another pampered athlete. Raised in a culture of rage and thuggery from pee wee football to the pros. But let’s blame the gun. It’s amazing out of the MILLIONS of guns in this country that so many people own them and use them properly. Bob-never played sports-limo liberal-should realize that his razor cut **** does not qualify him to lecture America on what the problem is. If he wanted to talk about make-up or tight fitting suits and the ‘tragedy’ of having to watch his weight and face lifts then I’m sure he could find a effeminate group of people to listen. Dear Anti-Gun folks, gun control idiots, and the like: okay…let’s just imagine that…that is possible to round up every single gun in the USA. Pretend for a moment…even though it’s impossible.

Okay…now instead of shooting someone…people get stabbed with knives. Well, maybe now all the knives are all rounded up in the USA. Rocks…maybe folks now can use big rocks to crush the head, or a candlestick, or a baseball bat. Get the picture? Killing won’t stop until killers stop.

And…do you liberal/progressive folks think for a moment that people will not import more guns via gun runners? Mexico has a ban on guns. How do you figure thousands of Mexicans die each year?

Oh…now imagine home made bombs…remember the troubles in Ireland? Maybe we should round up all fertilizers. I used to think I hoped Americans never started using bombs for killing. And bombs can easily kill more than the one person intended.

Or how about poisonous plants??? Hmmmm? Can’t even eliminate all the Pot in this country. Imagine trying to eliminate all the guns.

FYI: I;d rather be shot with a gun than stabbed with a knife.

-Killing a perfectly health young woman to server a recent deceased chief. – The Rus
      -The Blood Eagle
      - The people thrown in bogs
      - Druidic law that rationalized the killing of someone innocent if they could not ascertain the culprit.

Let’s consider Charlemagne. He mass baptized several thousand Saxons. But that was only after he retaliated for their pillage in Frankish land, subsequently defeated 2 or 3 times in battle. After defeating them & getting a peace treaty which they broke he got tired of it & smashed the great tree of the tree huggers. I know this example is one of you oldies & goodies. but note that the 1st time he conquered them he did not force any conversion.

He really isn’t too bright, and counts on his celebrity to make up for his lack of intellect. His statement makes no logical sense whatsoever and is devoid of context.

A firearm certainly does enhance the safety of anybody who wishes to engage in lawful self defense. I’m far more likely to emerge alive from a confrontation with a gang of thugs looking to inflict bodily harm on me, if I have a sidearm, than if I do not. What would enhance my safety more, besides being escorted by a cadre of cops. But wait, cops would only be intimidating if they too had sidearms. Further, if sidearms do not enhance safety, then why do cops and soldiers carry them?

See? The pantywaist is playing on pure emotions, like all good Leftists. What an effeminate movement he’s a part of and exemplifies.

Why should a sports announcer and a captive audience voice his opinion on gun control? I am sorry that tragedy happened but it was in the gun that killed them people. It was the person behind the gun, who made a decision in a haste of anger to pick up a gun, but if he didn’t have a gun in his state of mind. The people would still be dead. So these people in the media want to put us all at risk by having the government come in to our homes and take over our guns. As soon as that happens, and they compensate the gun people will be robbing houses with these, and then Tierney starts and we will have no freedom. Of course we are on our way there with this communist in the White House.

Facts seem to seriously contradict Mr Costas’ claim that without guns, Javon Belcher and his girlfriend would still be alive today.

Highest rate of suicides per 10,000: Lithuania at 3.16 (USA is ranked 38th at 1.2)
Highest rate of gun ownership per 100: USA at 88.8 (Lithuania is ranked 160th at .7 )

In South Korea, you’ll find the same. It’s ranked very high in the rate of suicides (2nd at 3.12/10K) but is ranked very low in gun ownership (149th at 1.1/100.)

So to summarize, there are 126 times more gun owners in the US than in Lithuania, but there are two and half times more that commit suicide in Lithuania than in the US.

If there is better evidence that liberals are guided more by emotion than logic in regards to the 2nd amendment, I don’t know of any.

Hands can choke. Let’s looks at facts . Fact – crime is lower in states with conceal carry laws. Fact – states with strict gun laws have higher crime rates and murder rates . Fact – he could have killed his girlfriend with anything in the house then drove off a bridge . Fact – Hitler banned guns in Germany only so he could take over the people .

      Keep it real ………………………………………………

But remember he works for NBC which is short for NOTHING BUT COMMUNISM, so what else could you ever expect from that organization. He never really blamed the fact that this young player chuld be suffering from head injuries or that he had a history of alcohol and drug abuse, all of which could be factors in the events.

Maybe Costas will find out about the need for the 2nd amendment if his house were invaded in the night by a bunch of thugs. (God forbid that something like that would happen but it could.) How would he defend his family?

Guns don’t kill people – people kill people. Jovan Belcher was a troubled young man. And if he was bent on murder suicide he could have beat his girlfriend to death and then jumped off a bridge. Or used a knife or baseball bat, the family car, you get the idea.
And If it’s guns that Mr. Costas is worried about, then perhaps he can use his influence has part of the National Obama Channel (NBC) to get the facts on fast & furious.

Was watching the game when this happened. My wife and I looked at each other in disbelief when
Costas launched into this anti-gun rant. We promptly turned the channel. We love and look forward to NFL games and the football season every year, but if this is what we have to look forward to then
      —– goodbye NFL.

Having to suffer Keith Olberwoman was bad enough but this just takes the cake.

As far as the incident itself and everyone bloviating sympathy —– the guy made a choices,
the “girlfriend” made a choices. Its time to put a stop to this ceremony of trying to assign
blame to someone or something other than where it belongs.

It wasnt the gun’s fault, it wasnt the fault of the gun mfg —- this was a 25 year old college grad
NFL celebrity making $2mil a year who decided the answer to a marital spat was a bullet. Ive owned
and handled weapons since before I was old enough to attend elementary school and Ive never shot
anyone. This describes just about everyone I know.

No sympathy here. Live like a thug, die like a thug.

Bob costs betrayed his lefty roots… Remember when he asked Michael jordanbif it was his mom with him, when it was his wife?

He is equally clueless here. She was shot multiple times, so his blind rage old have easily been sufficient to do lethal harm with a knife or a club or his fists.

I don’t hear any gun supporters dying, ‘if she had been armed maybe just he would be dead’.

Stop the politicization of tragedy bob and NBC and MSM. Your OPINION is not fact. It may not even be right. So shut up and give us the facts and colorful anecdotes about the game, that’s all.

If you don’t want a gun or your security to be armed, bob, that’s your choice. But at every level of humanity there are wolves who are armed and will casually hurt you. And bob, you look much more like sheep then you seem to believe.

No one said you have to be armed… Feel free to again demonstrate poor judgement and just hope that the bad guys won’t hurt you.

What the heck difference does it make what weapon he used! If he was intent on killing her and himself he would have used whatever was handy.

Guns don’t enhance safety, eh, Mr. Costas? I think the countless homeowners who’ve stopped a home invasion or even killed the intruder for the save the lives of their families would strongly disagree with you. So you’d prefer to submit to an intruder, let him take whatever he wants, rather than saves lives and property with a handgun for protection? I think you’re full of crap. Do you have a security team for protection? Are they just armed with Super Soakers as a deterrent? You know who might have benefited from having a handgun? Perhaps Belcher’s girlfried!

You’re free to state your opinion, Mr. Costas. Just be prepared for the reaction to it. Free speech works both ways.

If only they didn’t have any knives in the kitchen!
If only there wasn’t a baseball bat in the garage!
If there hadn’t been any rat poison under the sink!
If his fists weren’t so big, maybe he wouldn’t have beat her to death! Or strangled her!
Yeah, it’s tragic! And if he didn’t own a gun, chances are, they both would be alive right now! Or not. We’ll never know!!!

Yes…. we do know. Unless he had a conversation with his gun in which it convinced him that he had no choice other than to commit murder and then off himself, then no, the gun is not in any way responsible for this heinous crime.

Yeah, because he couldn’t have possibly stabbed her multiple times and shoved her body in the trunk of a car, right? He couldn’t have conspired to wait for her to be in a sink or tub with water, and tossed an electrical device into the water, or made it look like she sliped on something and broke her neck….right.

This is why I left the simple minded of the Left. Their minds are stuck in the little sand box, refusing to see beyond what’s in front of them. There’s an entire world before them waiting for the truth to be heard and seen. They continue to be stuck in their own imagination, not seeing reality for what it truly is.

Nicole Simpson doesn’t ring a bell, does it, Mr. Costas? I mean, O.J. used a gun on her, right. No wait…. it was a knife after all….hmmmm.

(For the record, I still think O.J.’s son killed Nicole and Goldman, but that’s just me….)

No accident. NBC coordinated with the government. Gun control is next on the agenda.

how about mentioning the control of weapons we give to the Muslim brotherhood through programs like the Bengazi debacle. If the crazy linebacker wanted to kill the girl, he really did not need a gun. Although he probably couldn’t have strangled himself.

Maybe when the elite that start wars and revolutions give up their guns then perhaps there would be logic for everyone else to give up theirs.

Right, and if it wasn’t for the “elites”, there would be no wars or murders….we would all get along like peaches if it wasn’t for the wretched elites.

      Think that through.

I just read an article abut two of the ‘elites’ holding up a gas station and shooting the clerk. Supposedly they were short of some ‘elitist’ drug or other. And over Thanksgiving, one of the ‘elites’ shot another of the ‘elites’ over some pickup truck parts.

      Maxim,
      are you balmy?

The majority of the shootings and domestic violence takes place well below the ‘elite’ line. Not because the elites don’t want to shoot their spouses, but because there are way more of us at the less than elite level. Do the math on the per capita elitist vs lowly schlubs in the country.

And the guns in question had nothing to do with war, and everything to do with selfishness and control. I expect it also had much to do with drugs and alcohol as well, judging from the articles running around.

Maxim, believe this or not, there actually those of us in the gun owning, daily gun carrying world who do so to protect us ALL. If I was to be present at a gas station or auto parts store and someone pulled a gun, I’d do my best to stop them. If they would stop and surrender, and stand down until LEO’s arrive, all the better.

If not, I practice often, and I’m a good enough shot to stop them, and protect us all.

You never hear about Badminton players who own guns shooting people or committing suicide.

Maybe it’s the drugs, money, fame and head injuries that have something to do with it?
