NBC’s Bob Costas Interrupts Sunday Night Football With Gun Control Lecture
UPDATES:
Jason Whitlock, the columnist who inspired Costas’ gun control lecture, has now claimed that the “NRA is the new KKK.” Read about it here.
Fellow sportscaster Jim Gray also offered an endorsement of Costas’ comments during a Monday appearance on Fox. See what he had to add about gun control — and also how fast he backtracked — here.

NBC Sportscaster Bob Costas took a detour from his usual discussion of athletics during Sunday Night Football to lecture his audience on gun control.
Discussing the shocking murder-suicide that rocked the NFL over the weekend, when Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher fatally shot his girlfriend and then committed suicide in front of his coach and general manager, Costas argued that domestic disputes are more likely to end in such a fashion if the government does not limit people’s access to firearms.
Costas said:
Writer Jason Whitlock, with whom I do not always agree but today said it so well that we may as well just quote or paraphrase from the end of his article.
Our current gun culture, Whitlock wrote, ensures that more and more domestic disputes will end in the ultimate tragedy, and that more convenience-store confrontations over loud music coming from a car will leave more teenage boys bloodied and dead.’
Handguns do not enhance our safety. They exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate arguments, and bait us into embracing confrontation rather than avoiding it.
In the coming days, Jovan Belcher’s actions and their possible connection to football will be analyzed. Who knows? But here, wrote Jason Whitlock, is what I believe: If Jovan Belcher didn’t possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today.

Posted on December 3, 2012 at 12:33amCostas’ assumption is incorrect. The gun was merely the tool he had on hand at the time. Because spouses have never killed each other with anything OTHER than guns, eh, Costas? I was in the courtroom at a trial where the spouse stopped, untied a boot and used the bootlace to strangle the person to the point of passing out so they could stroll to the kitchen and find a knife to finish off the job. So maybe we should limit access to shoe strings and paring knives???? Costas is a horrible announcer and an even worse commentator on the human condition.

Posted on December 3, 2012 at 12:32amIf it hadn’t been my Cowboys playing in that game I would have turned it off immediately. I can’t believe that Costas took it upon himself to blame a gun for the tragedy that happened in Kansas City. We don’t and probably won’t ever have all the facts of the case because both parties are dead but I would be willing to bet that Javon had some serious problems besides owning a gun and that we still would have had a tragedy even if he had to use his bare hands and then hung himself in the bathroom. Costas if you don’t want a gun then by all means don’t own one, I on the other hand am not going to depend on your theory that if everyone was disarmed that we would have a utopian society with no crime. I mean for Gods sake look at Mexico they have some of the most stringent gun control laws you can get and they are finding mass graves almost on a monthly basis. Sorry buddy but if I have to go you can bet there is going to be someone going with me!

Posted on December 3, 2012 at 12:30amSo, tiny Bob Costas, the highly paid, pied piper of politically correct pretentiousness, and that tiny rodent on his tiny head decided to lecture the uneducated masses about the virtues of gun control. Sounds like he’s hoping to land a talk show on MSNBC… or replace one of the bloated wart hogs on The View.

Posted on December 3, 2012 at 12:19amBob Costas is such an idiot. Belcher clearly had deep psychological issues that led him to take his girlfriend’s life and his own life. If he didn’t have a gun, he would have gotten a knife, or thrown himself and his girlfriend off the top of the football stadium, or overdosed on medications, or any of countless other ways to meet an untimely end. Bob Costas is ignoring the well-being of our football players and turning his broadcast into a political circus. Shame on Bob Costas.

Posted on December 3, 2012 at 12:14amTo control the masses like cows the tyrants disarm people.
They are completely dependent on the good will of their rulers to protect them. And sometimes that doesn’t work out so well.
In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
——————————
In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
——————————
Germany established gun control in 1938
and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were
unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.
——————————
China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
——————————
Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
——————————
Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
——————————
Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million educated people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Would you rather he beat her to death with a hammer? Or run over her with a car? Or smother her with a pillow, or choke her to death with his bare hands, or drown her in a bath tub, or stab her with a kitchen knife, or turn his pet PitBull loose on her, or take your pick of a 1000 different ways to kill your lover.
Oh I forgot this one vote for Obama it’s a very slow painful death……….

Posted on December 3, 2012 at 12:05amFor years I’ve had great respect for Bob Costas. His intellect, insights, and personality were welcomed into my home countless times. No more. Why do people in media feel qualified to speak on every social subjects as some kind of authority? The statistics do not suppport your position Bob! People kill people. If handguns were banned, do you honestly think Jovan would have said to himself. “I really want to kill my girlfriend, but I can’t get a gun, I guess I have no choice and will have to let her live” ?. People kill people with bare hands, rope, knives, running over their victims, poison, drugs, setting fires, stoneing, baseball bats, drowning, pushing their victims down stairs, etc etc etc…. come on Bob. It’s not the weapon, it is our society that is driving this behavior. Look at Australia and the results of their gun bans. More crime and more murder.

Posted on December 3, 2012 at 12:03amI think they got Bob’s facelift too tight and it’s cutting off the blood flow to his brain. Why is he surprised that a guy who gets paid more if he conducts himself more violently at work would not then address issues off the field with violence? I’m happy Belcher saved the taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars by imposing a reasonable sentence upon himself.
Guns misused are an expression of a culture of violence, not a cause of it: beat downs, thuggery, blood sports like dog fighting, the idiot who used brass knuckles to kill a spider, are symptoms of cultural and societal decay. Do we want to give those like minded individuals free reign over a defenseless populace?
Violence is routinely glorified and a bat or brick can be a quite effective expression of violence when guns aren’t available. Muslims seem quite happy to vent their barbarism with saws, knives and stones.
All that being said, the Libs are desperate to convince the gullible that the 2nd Amendment is just about personal defense and not also about protecting the citizens from a tyrannical government.

seriously? Making the player out to be the victim? I didn’t hear for a call on weight machines in the not so distant past. NFL welcome to your Chris Benoit case. No the perpetrator wasn’t a victim. Costas you’re a d0uchebag…
A handgun may have been the only thing that could’ve saved his girlfriend. She would’ve been using it LEGALLY to defend herself. No amount of laws will stop someone like this.

Really? Then I guess OJ really was innocent because Nicole had her head cut off…..
So, what you are telling me, is that an NFL linebacker in a murderous rage couldn’t possibly kill anyone without a gun? Maybe its just in Kansas City where their defense appeared to lack aggressiveness up to now anyway.
No Bob, the only you could believe he NEEDED a gun, was to be too old, too unimaginative, or too tired. Maybe a little rest will help you find “perspective’”
