NBC’s Bob Costas Interrupts Sunday Night Football With Gun Control Lecture

UPDATES:

Jason Whitlock, the columnist who inspired Costas’ gun control lecture, has now claimed that the “NRA is the new KKK.”Β  Read about it here.

Fellow sportscaster Jim Gray also offered an endorsement of Costas’ comments during a Monday appearance on Fox. See what he had to add about gun control — and also how fast he backtracked — here.

NBC Sportscaster Bob Costas took a detour from his usual discussion of athletics during Sunday Night Football to lecture his audience on gun control.

Discussing the shocking murder-suicide that rocked the NFL over the weekend, when Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher fatally shot his girlfriend and then committed suicide in front of his coach and general manager, Costas argued that domestic disputes are more likely to end in such a fashion if the government does not limit people’s access to firearms.

Costas said:

Writer Jason Whitlock, with whom I do not always agree but today said it so well that we may as well just quote or paraphrase from the end of his article.

Our current gun culture, Whitlock wrote, ensures that more and more domestic disputes will end in the ultimate tragedy, and that more convenience-store confrontations over loud music coming from a car will leave more teenage boys bloodied and dead.’

Handguns do not enhance our safety. They exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate arguments, and bait us into embracing confrontation rather than avoiding it.

In the coming days, Jovan Belcher’s actions and their possible connection to football will be analyzed. Who knows? But here, wrote Jason Whitlock, is what I believe: If Jovan Belcher didn’t possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today.

How many know ,if Costas or his family was in danger he would have no problem hiring people with Guns than YOU to protect him, his wife and children as he should. What he fears is the great unwashed …that’s YOU…having a firearm to do as he would do… protect your family . Because well he is better smarter, then YOU the Unwashed. This is what you get for not knowing what Wine goes with the cheese course.

I don’t blame Bob for what he said I blame the microphone. If not for the microphone he would have never sounded like an idiot.

Confirming. Guns are the only weapon, tool, utility, object, item or solid mass that are capable of killing people.

What people like Costas ignore is that 99.9% of gun owners obey the law every single day and go about their business like the normal Americans they are, without using their gun(s) in the commission of a crime. It’s the places with strict gun control that suffer from the worst amount of gun crime (Chicago, New York, LA, and just about any urban area). Tell me again why the law-abiding vast majority should be punished for the actions of a few thugs? Sounds like tyranny of the minority to me.

I’ll give up my right to bear arms when Bob Costas gives up his freedom of speech. He seems way too naive to be trusted with that choice, though. So, I’ll just cling to my Bible and guns.

This guy didn’t need a gun. He could just as easy killed his poor wife by smashing into her leading with his head to her chin. Someone here observed that this Costas fellow ignored the violence done to Belcher on a football field like the one behind him. Never fails, mixing egos with microphones is not a good idea.

Costas is an idiot. People hell bent on committing murder and suicide will find a way. It just happened that a gun was available this time. It could have just as well been a kitchen knife or something else

I think a football helmet slammed up against her head could of killed her. If that would of been the case would he be talking about banning football. Don’t think so. Love/pray

21 years in the Army. 12 years as a private business founder and owner.

A lifetime of responsible gun ownership and near daily firing and hunting of one type or another.

I have and build up mil-spec arms of many types – so that I may help others resist any form of tyranny.

Interesting that Whitlock is all of a sudden outraged over this murder-suicide yet he never wrote any articles about the 99 homicides that have occurred in KC this year.

Blacks commit 75% of all interracial crimes; whites commit 15% – I’d hope Mr Whitlock would address issues within his own race first before coming out against guns.

Yo Bob, in Casper Wyoming last week Christopher Krumm shot his dad in the head with a bow and arrow and then stabbed him to death after he had just stabbed to death his dads 42-year-old girl friend Heidi Arnold. Then he stabbed himself to death too. Why no outrage about that? Ban bows and arrows and knives?

People kill people moron. Don’t blame the tool, blame the person using it.

Typical liberal to run off with the mouth with no facts in hand. I have not heard one detail of this man’s past history or why he did it. Looks like rage and jealousy first off but no one really knows at this point. I heard Romeo Crenell (KC coach) witnessed it? Wow!

Just another reason to go out and get one. It’s coming folks and there is nothing we can do at the moment to stop it. Get a nice one too. They may go up in value. The government will stop the production first. It’ll be hard to collect and destroy them. Buy plenty of ammo or a re-load kit.

I like football. That being said, if you look at the culture in professional sports, football, baseball, basketball, you find a lot of drug abuse and DV. If Costas wants to get on his soap box, maybe he should turn his attention to the injuries, on the field and off, caused by professional sports. Heck, I just heard of some guy with I think the Browns hanging himself. Damn rope manufactures, better regulate them too. If he wants to climb into bed with the libs, let’s hear him agree with the libs that contact sports should be banned. Dime to a dollar, the punk Costas has a gun in his home to protect himself.
