Is Global Warming Past the Point of No Return?

(Photo: Shutterstock.com)
WASHINGTON (TheBlaze/AP) — A new report is saying that the world’s emissions of heat-trapping pollution rose again last year by 3 percent. With that, scientists say it’s now unlikely that global warming can be limited to a couple of degrees, which is an international goal.
According to the study published in the journal Nature Climate Change, the majority of the increase was from China, the world’s biggest carbon dioxide polluter. Of the planet’s top 10 polluters, the United States and Germany were the only countries that reduced their carbon dioxide emissions.
Here’s the 2011 figures for the biggest polluters:
1. China, up 10 percent to 10 billion tons.
2. United States, down 2 percent to 5.9 billion tons
3. India, up 7 percent to 2.5 billion tons.
4. Russia, up 3 percent to 1.8 billion tons.
5. Japan, up 0.4 percent to 1.3 billion tons.
6. Germany, down 4 percent to 0.8 billion tons.
7. Iran, up 2 percent to 0.7 billion tons.
8. South Korea, up 4 percent to 0.6 billion tons.
9. Canada, up 2 percent to 0.6 billion tons.
10. South Africa, up 2 percent to 0.6 billion tons.
Last year, all the world’s nations combined pumped nearly 38.2 billion tons of carbon dioxide into the air from the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and oil, according to the new international calculations on global emissions. That’s about a billion tons more than the previous year.
The total amounts to more than 2.4 million pounds (1.1 million kilograms) of carbon dioxide released into the air every second.
Because emissions of the key greenhouse gas have been rising steadily and most carbon stays in the air for a century, it is not just unlikely but “rather optimistic” to think that the world can limit future temperature increases to 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit), said the study’s lead author, Glen Peters at the Center for International Climate and Environmental Research in Oslo, Norway.
Three years ago, nearly 200 nations set the 2-degree C temperature goal in a nonbinding agreement. Negotiators now at a conference under way in Doha, Qatar, are trying to find ways to reach that target.
The only way, Peters said, is to start reducing world emissions now and “throw everything we have at the problem.”
Andrew Weaver, a climate scientist at the University of Victoria in Canada who was not part of the study, said: “We are losing control of our ability to get a handle on the global warming problem.”
In 1997, most of the world agreed to an international treaty, known as the Kyoto Protocol, that required developed countries such as the United States to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 5 percent when compared with the baseline year of 1990. But countries that are still developing, including China and India, were not limited by how much carbon dioxide they expelled. The United States never ratified the treaty.
The latest pollution numbers, calculated by the Global Carbon Project, a joint venture of the Energy Department and the Norwegian Research Council, show that worldwide carbon dioxide levels are 54 percent higher than the 1990 baseline.

Posted on December 3, 2012 at 1:56pmOf course there is such a point. It’s the point at which there is so little ice and snow left that the earth is reflecting back virtually no radiation into space, but rather is absorbing most of it, thereby accelerating the warming cycle.
That too, will eventually reverse itself–when the continental plates have drifted into a radically different position and orientation, when orogeny has uplifted enough of the earth’s land surface, or when the earth’s orbit has shifted away from the sun, or when the sun goes through a cool cycle.
All you have to do is wait a few million years.

Posted on December 3, 2012 at 2:20pmNo, “Moron”..this current warming is NOT “manmade”.
The earth started warming right after 1860, the middle of the Little Ice Age, and has been warming at the same rate regardless of man’s contribution to the CO2 in the atmosphere. The rate of warming in the past 50 years has not exceeded that of the past 150 years, meaning CO2 has not been a factor.
But this article is actually the Death Knell of Anthropogenic Global Warming!
Why?
Because it points out that while CO2 has risen significantly (54% since 1990) yet during the past 16 years, the average global temperature hasn’t risen AT ALL!
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2012/12/01/18-annual-climate-gabfests-16-years-without-warming/#more-75152
So the question becomes: What if CO2 is actually BENEFICIAL? The plants certainly seem to think so, with practically all growing faster and with less water than before. Trees are growing 30% faster now than 50 years ago!
Face it, the earth is currently in a low CO2 state compared with the rest of geologic history, and whenever the earth has warmed up, man has benefited. It is benefiting even now. Enjoy the warmth; enjoy a flourishing biosphere!
And quit being an unthinking tool of the UN!

Posted on December 3, 2012 at 2:43pmLLoyd-Drako, that is a funny arguement, because that is exactly what solar panels are doing, collecting solar rays from the sun and turning them into some form of “Heat Energy” on the earth. The pollutants in the atmosphere have really only been measured correctly for about 25 years, but they never included all of the people who were heating with wood. You see, if you do a chart that shows CO2 and global warming, you could show a chart that shows the amount of Solar panels and how the globe has had the same warming. I think solar panels will INCREASE THE EARTHS TEMPERATURE FASTER THAN ANYTHING ELSE IN HISTORY. The funny part is, That Obummers redistribution policies are allowing developing countries to increase their need for energy at a faster pace than ever before and the Greenies in America that have multiplied regulations in the US soo much are also causing the hugh increase in pollution from other countries. Sounds like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Posted on December 3, 2012 at 3:59pmOk let’s see if you can follow a practical analogy of what is likely to happen. Many young kids decide they want a fish tank and a majority quickly become bored with the cleaning and maintenance of the tank. The water quality becomes progressively dirty, less oxygenated and inhospitable for the fish. The fish however seem to do fine for a period despite the degrading of the tanks environment. Of course right up to the tipping point when there is inadequate oxygen and intolerable levels of ammonia. At that point the majority if not all the fish die within minutes. We will similarly reach a tipping point with respect to greenhouse gases and other pollutants we are dumping in the air and water. In relative terms it will happen as fast as the fish tank. Unfortunately, unlike the fish tank we will not be able to replace the fouled water. Your reference to changes that happen over 10,000, 100,000 or even 1,000,000 years is indicative of a failure to recognize how fast we are approaching the tipping point.

Accelerated levels of CO2 are beneficial for plants. Beck showed this on his program years ago.
My point was that the powers that be, are creating an artificial crisis to carry forth their criminal agenda.
They cab heat the ionosphere to 100 degrees fahrenheit and the ozone to 50,0000 degrees.
HAARP is basically a giant microwave oven that can direct it’s energy to designated areas on the planet.
As far as the UN goes, I loathe them. It was created by the IMF and World Bank in 1945.

Posted on December 4, 2012 at 2:34pm@Love the Kids: Appreciate your argument, but the radiation collected by solar panels is either used directly to heat buildings, or to heat water, or indirectly to generate electricity, which is then used for the same purposes as coal- or natural gas-generated current. No emissions go back into the atmosphere, and neither the earth nor the oceans are warmed directly by solar panels. CO2, of course, is not the only greenhouse gas. There is also methane, which is produced by animals, and which may also be released in uncontrollable volume from permafrost regions as the earth warms.

Posted on December 3, 2012 at 1:48pmIt doesn’t matter if Global Warming is occuring or not. We do not possess the technology to stop it, nor do we possess the political will even if we did. Man’s contribution to it would be such a tiny percent that it’s negligable. Regardless of the pseudo-science hucksters on the left would have you believe. All they are trying to do is get your money and get power, and using what is at best the natural phenomena of climate change.
But even if they are right and we are looking at true, and rapid global warming:
Effects of out of control Global Warming:
(1) Greenland will become green,
(2) Storms, especially ocean generated storms will become more violent.
(3) The rise of sea levels will decrease available land on coastlines
(4) Overall the world will become a wetter more humid place as billions of tons of Ice are slowly released into the atmosphere.
(5) Some species dependent on Ice will be reduced or go extinct. Some species dependent on warmer climes will explode in growth.
(6) Antartica will become a habitable continent again and enrich billions of people.
(7) People and animals will adapt. The ones that don’t?….Well Natural Selection is a B*tch.
The world is a changing place, those that fight hardest to keep it the same are usually the first to go. As for me, I am thankful that we don’t live in a stagnant unchanging world.

However, there are a few promising technologies that are currently being worked on by scientists and engineers that could be used in future global climate control and fuel supply.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_sequestration
http://www.airfuelsynthesis.com/
I am really excited about the 2nd one, this gives some hope that if our natural fossil fuels should run out like some geologists are expecting, we could still dust off the old Harley Davidson in the garage and go for a ride.
I can see several other important benefits from fuel from air technology, it would be a road block for the libs trying to slam a carbon tax on us, it would theoretically be an endless fuel supply and it would help negate the perceived need for the EPA.

The carbon output of the entire human race since it’s beginning to now would equal the output of 1 large volcano active for 6 years.
If humans are involved in climate change it’s negligible.
Unless you possess the technology to reduce solar output or change the QUITE NATURAL warming trend the Earth is experiencing then there is no fix.
You have bought into the bankrupt and childish religion of man-made climate change. Instead of sticking your head into the sand and being a puppet of those hucksters on the left that just want to use this natural phenomena to steal your money and gain power…why don’t you educate yourself and accept the fact that the world is a changing place.

I’m so sorry that “it won’t go away.” I guess it’s just one of those things you can’t run from, coward.

No money in global warming? There’s a saying in scientific circles..”no problem, no grants”.

Posted on December 3, 2012 at 2:05pmPORKY You have lard for brains if you think there isn’t money to be made in the global warming scam,Al Gore is looking to become the worlds first trillionaire. He sees his fraud being exposed daily that’s why we see him cracking up and losing it in public. Maurice Strong should’ve been executed many years ago for crimes against humanity since he was one of the first to start the scam of ‘man made global warming’.

Posted on December 3, 2012 at 1:26pmGlobal warming is a natural process and NORMAL cyclic byproduct of having that big ball of fire in the sky.
Anything else attributed to its cause is utter thought manipulation by the control-freaks of this planet.

Posted on December 3, 2012 at 1:28pmWe don’t have any international goal. We didn’t come up with it. Some collectivist anti-American group came up with it.
The creepballs think they can run our government by creating one outside our country, and making us submit to its authority. They can’t and they won’t. They can kiss the dream of American subjugation good bye.
