How Should Christians Respond to Atheist ‘Hatred’ & the War on Christmas? This Priest Has Some Advice

Father Jonathan Morris Explains Fox War on Christmas Comments | Atheists

Over the weekend, priest and Fox News analyst Father Jonathan Morris joked on-air that the hosts of “Fox & Friends Weekend” looked “so angry” about the War on Christmas. On Monday, TheBlaze connected with the priest to speak further about the ongoing assault on Christmas and to gain his insight and advice for Christians who find themselves frustrated over secularists’ attacks on the holiday — and on faith more generally.

During his segment on Fox, Morris noted that he believes that people should speak up against atheist activists, “but without losing the peace.” TheBlaze asked the faith leader and author of “God Wants You Happy: From Self-Help to God’s Help” to further explain his advice for believers in this regard.

“When I see people getting really worked up about this issue, I understand it and it is worthy of a discussion and worthy of an expression of our disagreement with the way in which these people go about removing Jesus from Christmas,” Morris said. “But we can’t allow our Christmas then to become an internal struggle and disdain for the people who are taking the meaning of Christmas away from us.”

If reactions to the War on Christmas aren’t kept in check, the priest argued that believers will allow the meaning of the holiday to be changed “in a fundamental way.” While he noted that there is a place for “righteous anger,” he described the importance of determining the differences between simply spouting off with no bounds and taking aim at atheists’ assaults on Christmas with love.

“Righteous anger is deciding that I’m not going to sit back silently in the face of evil, but rather I am going to speak out in love,” Morris said. “When we find ourselves having lost inner peace and finding ourselves disgruntled and upset…we’ve already decided we’re going to allow [atheist activists] to take Christmas away from our hearts.”

Despite explaining that he understands the angst among believers and that he by no means believes that people should refrain from speaking out against attacks, Morris also seeks to remind believers about Christ’s commands.

“The message that Jesus came to give to us was one of personal redemption and love and when we find ourselves resentful and bitter against somebody who might be doing something objectively wrong — it’s a time to reflect on the fact that we’re not responding well,” he continued. “Turn back to God and say, ‘I’m willing to follow your example of loving my enemy.’”

As far as the legalities of nativities on public property go, Morris said that the courts have generally been very positive about allowing religious displays, so long as local, state and federal governments are not establishing one religion over another. So, if a nativity display is allowed, then other faiths too — pending that their symbols are posted at an appropriate time — should be permitted to also seek representation in public space.

Atheists have taken this sentiment to mean that they, too, can post offensive messages aimed at debunking Christianity and insulting believers. Take, for instance, the anti-faith sign and the mock nativity that the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) setup inside the Wisconsin state capitol building. Despite his view that all religious symbols should be allowed, Morris made a distinction in this instance.

“That has nothing to go with the free exercise – that’s harassment,” he said of the atheist display. “It’s harassment and other [religious] symbols should be permitted when they are representing a constituency in that community and when they’re timely and oriented toward the common good.”

In addition to dismissing these and other atheist activist tactics as acts of harassment, Morris said that he believes groups like the FFRF are motivated by “hatred.”

“I think it’s hatred for public expression of faith that they despise,” he told TheBlaze.

As for his quip to Fox News hosts, he said that he was merely being facetious over the weekend when he called them “angry.”

“They’re not angry about this stuff,” he said. “They were presenting the facts.”

If this story wasn’t so sad, I’d find it laughable. Just consider, Using a Catholic priest to Cover up the Greatest LIE of their Church, Their Pope & those that Rule with him.
Take a trip back to the early days of the ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH. For the first 2 or 3 hundred years after JESUS Arose into Heaven, Their was NO Special Days Recorded anywhere, where The Followers of JESUS, Celebrated His BIRTH. Indeed, AT the Same Time, Mary, the Mother of JESUS was dead & turning to dust, in the grave, SHE WAS NOT, honored, ( DESPITE THE LIES from HOLLYWOOD), She was just considered, A Blessed mother for Giving Birth to Jesus, Then like a Good Jewish Wife, She went on to have other children, fathered by her Husband.
All of that Hype you’ve been taught, was nothing but a Pack of Lies, Perpetrated by the Roman Catholic Church, In the Attempt of Blending their PAGAN gods With The Followers of JESUS.
And the Catholics gave the People a Warning, Accept the Facts the way WE teach them, Or DIE!
Some choice, Right?, Yet it worked
This is a Short version of the facts, & it’s going to hurt many Luke warm Believers & Catholics, But I get most of my Catholic Information, From the Priest themselves. As well as the Vatican’s own publications.
Another Fact of the time, Dec. 25 Th. is the middle of winter, NO SHEPHERD would be out tending his flock in the middle of winter!
Another fact; It took several hundred years before the first Catholic Induced Christmas to happen.
      Believe what

I do think most Christians do understand that Dec 25 is not Jesus’s birthday and that it is just the day that we traditionally observe it. (I remember reading somewhere that Jesus was most likely born in one of the Spring months.)

I really don’t think that Catholics are bad people (My own Mother is Catholic and one heck of an awesome lady.) Unfortunately for many Catholics very hard times are coming for their denomination of the Christian faith, reference the “Prophecy of the Popes” and the “Third Secret” presented to the three children at Fatima, Portugal in 1917.

If these prophecies prove to be true, complete destruction of the Catholic Church and Rome is coming.

As for my own beliefs, I do not tie them into any particular “denomination” but I do believe Jesus is the son of God. I also believe that he had a wife, after all he is part human.

Jesus was human, but he didn’t come here to experience just being human. he came to suffer as we did and devote his entire life to saving us. Please don’t believe some wacky stories about him, there are four stories in the bible which depict what his life was like on earth if you want to know the real story from the only people at that time who knew him. Our heavenly father had a clear mission for Jesus to be our savior and he did his job to the T. He lived his life each and everyday trying to help mankind every chance he got, he didn’t have time for a wife when the whole world needed to be reminded of God’s love.

To me you can not separate the holiday from the real meaning.. I think that any city that has christmas lights are in fact and endorsement of Christmas. If they place the lights then the nativity should be allowed to be put up. If any celebration of Christmas at schools or either Santa Claus of Frosty is seen then the nativity should be shown.. Why? Christmas is not a secular holiday but a Religious holiday just like Easter. Their is no separation from the Holiday and the religion that its from without the Christ there is no Christmas. So I think the war on Christmas is a load of crap and we need to specify and counter suit these as that. If a city can have Christmas parades it must be allowed to have the nativity there is no other way. You can not have Christmas without Christ. To me if you ban the nativity then all things of Christmas must be banned , ie Christmas sales, black Friday sales, etc.. and if we bring this to light watch the retail industry get back in line too since They celebrate Christmas for money. I celebrate Christmas for giving.

Cheers! Does anyone want a good piece of some of my Birthday cake for Jesus… Its always a white cake , white Icing. that represents the purity of his birth, and love.

Merry Christmas bring Christmas back to the family and watch it grow in public

Overcommercializing and censorship tend to go hand in hand, as both are against the teachings of the Bible. The more this re-labeling and illegal bans on free expression have gained in popularity, the crazier the materialism has gotten.

Solving the one doesn’t necessarily fix the other, but my point is, we should all take a stand against both. I would say the biggest goal needs to be to spread the gospel message and change hearts. No appeal to our legal rights will work if the vast majority gets infected with immorality and stops caring that they’re lawbreakers, for example.

And more importantly that scenario leaves more people lost and in need of Jesus’ salvation; reaching them for their own souls’ sake needs to be the top priority. Do that, and everything else will follow as a side effect. ^_^

This will be the second year that my family will choose not to celebrate the annual consumerism festival. Instead of exchanging gifts with friends and family that ultimately feed the regifting loop and next season’s garage sale, we ask that everyone make donations to their own favorite charities in our honor as we do the same. Christmas is about giving in love in honor of God’s gift to us. Not Snuggies and gift certificates to Victoria’s Secret.

darkness and evil always prevail – show me where good and light have prevailed for any length of time, any where. Just look at the multiplicity of “Christian” churches that spew hatred toward any other sect or denomination of “Christianity”. When the Disciples that Jesus had hand picked found a man that was not of their group working miracles in Jesus name, they told him to stop, and complained to Jesus; Jesus told them that “He that is for us is NOT against us.” and for them to leave others alone.

When we hate, we are actually holding that person back spiritually. By loving them and releasing them, then they can grow spiritually.
Christ said we would have trials and tribulations on earth, but to remember that he overcame the earth. He lived in a physical body, suffered for our sins on the cross and arose on the third day. Hallelujah!

I think a lot of atheists are envious of religious people and the certainties that gives them in life. At least that’s a little how I feel. Think of being in a community where 2/3rds of the members are blissfully happy to be part of a club that you are excluded from, and you could imagine some envy creeping in.

This of course doesn’t excuse hate or mocking displays, but I think that’s where many of them are coming from.

The ironic thing is that the sectarian Christians who squeal the loudest over this “war on Christmas” are the same ones who defend parodies of sacred Mormon clothing, Joseph Smith, the angel Moroni, or other sacred Mormon symbols. They laugh when the secular left wing lampoons us in the “Book of Mormon Musical” on Broadway. They nod approvingly when Bill Maher or Lawrence O’Donnell slam the Church on television. Then they pile on with anti-Mormon books, videos, and web sites of their own making.

However, when such derision is turned upon them, they cry like babies. When they get a taste of their own medicine, they don’t like it very much. If only they might consider that before they show “The Godmakers” video to their church youth group or before they turn the “street preachers” loose on us at General Conference or at Mormon temple dedications.

Please tell us how you REALLY know that these are the same people. Unlike the atheist who decry everything they think is myth. If it’s not real they why do you care so much?

Atheist pretend they have the luxury to point at everyone about evils done through history as the fault of religion; i.e.: slavery, polygamy, genocide, etc. etc.

If we buy into their point of view, then they’ve had millions of years to get rid of these evil. Or to be fair, 10,000 years of civilization to get rid of these evils. Yet, where were the atheist to stop them? Now that we’ve arrived at a point of history where everyone agrees that these things are wrong? Christianity, has helped outlaw them. The atheist now point to the religious as being the cause of it.

So show us where the atheist have made a concerted effort to bring freedom, value of life, elevated the rights of women in history… Don’t tell me what you’re doing now, because your kind has existed throughout history.

If you can’t see that your religion has some rather goofy (if not down right creepy) aspects to it that others might find odd and/or humorous, then you are too steeped in it for your own good. So rather than convincing yourself that you are a victim, you might better spend your time educating yourself about your own religion. Romans 8:35
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

I would suggest getting down on your knees right now.

We are supposed to respond to them the way we are supposed to respond to everyone, with love. If we don’t have love, real, deep love, then we are not Christians and we are just fooling ourselves.

Having said that, the folks who are persecuting us are just playing their part in a cosmic struggle. Pray for them, treat them kindly, show them the love of Christ that we all need.

      Trey

      @TMINK

I’m not arguing against the notion that we should always exhibit love, but tough love counts too. See Jesus vs Pharisees and Paul vs sinners at Corinth.

@cathouseebrella, the only difference between Christians and non-christians is that Christians have hope in a hereafter. not sure about non-christians. what do you think? what do non-christians believe?

The Winter Solstice is on December 21, 2012.

Christmas is on December 25 2012.

So simple even a caveman can read a calendar and determine that they are 2 different dates.

The solstice was on Dec. 25th according to the Julian calendar, which is why the Christians chose that particular date. We no longer use the Julian calendar, which is why the solstice now fall on a different date.

The Winter Solstice is the shortest day of “daylight” of the year and has nothing to do with calenders.

Just like the Summer Solstice has the longest amount of daylight.

      Calenders can’t change Mother Nature…..

Being an atheist doesn’t make one evil.

No but a person’s intentions and actions do. BTW please define evil for me so we can use that as a basis.

As a Christian, I think the retailers should stand with the atheist and get rid of Christmas… They’ll be begging to have it back in a few years.

      @JustAngry

Being atheist at least makes you foolish, corrupt, vile and does no good.

@jrc99, What proof or evidence led you to believe in the Bible? Someone that would call another a fool, vile and corrupt would really need a good answer to that question, or THEY’RE the fool.

“I think it’s hatred for public expression of faith that they despise.”

Am I missing something or does this quote not make any sense?

Ha ha. I agree. But put a comma after hatred and an “a” between “of” and “faith” then read again.

    “Harassment” eh?

Ahh so he’s basically comparing what Athiests do to what the Westboro Church does to people trying to have peaceful funerals.
