Prison Inmates Allege Correctional Officers Forced Them to Rub Hot Sauce on Their Genitals

(Credit: AP)
RALEIGH, N.C. (TheBlaze/AP) — Prison officials in North Carolina are calling for a criminal investigation after inmates alleged correctional officers forced them to rub habanero hot sauce on their genitals, resulting in painful blisters.
N.C. Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Pamela Walker said Monday that officials had asked the State Bureau of Investigation to review conduct at Sampson Correctional Institution.
Walker said one staff member at the prison has been reassigned and another went on leave after the start of an internal investigation, the findings of which are being kept confidential. Additional personnel action could be forthcoming, she said.
“Upon review of an internal investigation, (the Division of Adult Correction) has referred the inmate allegations to the SBI for their review and any subsequent actions they deem appropriate,” Walker said. “DAC considers the allegations to be serious and the alleged actions in violation of policy, which warrants further review by management.”
In July, six inmates from Sampson sent a hand-written letter to the U.S. District Court in Greensboro complaining that staff had forced them to perform numerous humiliating acts for the entertainment of guards, including stripping nude and pretending to have sex. The medium-security facility houses about 500 male inmates in Clinton, which is about 60 miles southeast of Raleigh.
The inmates also reported being forced to gulp a super-hot “Exotic Hot Sauce” purchased off the Internet and slather it on their testicles, as well as being forced to grab and kiss wild snakes while working on a road crew and throwing captured bunnies in to oncoming traffic.
Those who performed for the guards were rewarded with preferential work assignments, food, cigarettes and beer, the inmates alleged. Both tobacco and alcohol are banned in North Carolina’s prisons.
In their letter, the inmates ask for the court’s assistance in finding lawyers to help them file a lawsuit against the state and said they feared retaliation from the staff at the prison.
In a Nov. 19 order, U.S. Magistrate Judge Joi Elizabeth Peake agreed to accept the letter as a formal federal civil rights action, but wrote that she could not accept the complaint in its present form due to several legal issues with its format and because it was filed in the incorrect judicial district. The prison’s location puts the case under the jurisdiction of the federal court in Raleigh.
It was not immediately clear if the inmates are represented by a lawyer or if their complaint will be refiled in the correct venue.
Walker said the prison system learned of the allegations through internal grievances filed by the inmates and not from the letter to the court.

Posted on December 4, 2012 at 3:25pmFYI: It is NOT an officer’s job to “Protect and Serve”….. In fact, they cannot protect, as it would be unlawful for them to act until a law has been broken (meaning AFTER the fact…) And it was NEVER the intention of law enforcement to “Serve” they merely hunt down and capture those who break the law…
Every officer I have ever known gets a chuckle out of the “Protect and Serve” non-sense.. I have a friend who is a Sheriff and when I asked him about it, he threw me his handbook and said, “See if you can find ‘Protect and Serve’ anywhere in that book…”
I couldn’t…. That is when I realized the truth of the police department.. You can’t rely on officers, and you shouldn’t… Its not their job to protect you… That’s your job… It’s THEIR job to hunt down and arrest the people that hurt you should you fail in YOUR job….

Colonels don’t resign over trivialities; people aren’t given dishonorable and bad conduct discharges for trivialities; they aren’t sentenced to hard labor at Fort Bragg for trivialities.
Hot sauce on genitals is still bad though, as well as illegal, and whether you defend it or deny it you are still wrong.

Posted on December 4, 2012 at 6:55amLet’s see, if they were given preferential treatment in return for humiliating themselves, what would they have to gain by admitting it? I don’t think I would admit to being “forced” to put hot sauce on my genitals, perform mock sex acts, kiss wild snakes and throwing bunnies into traffic just to get back at a couple guards that looked sideways at me. The only thing they could get if they’re making this up is worse treatment.
As far as the treatment our soldiers did, this is an isolated incident, just like Abu Grabiel (or whatever), and yes, I remember women soldiers humiliating male inmates. The only reason it was humiliating to the Muslim males is because it was dished out by female soldiers, whom they think should be veiled, subservient and docile. I’m not sure what I would do if standing in front of a terrorist who possibly was involved in murdering nearly 3.000 Americans and thought women were worse than dogs. That said, we also don’t know if the inmates instigated their behavior and didn’t actually receive preferential treatment. That’s what investigations are for.

Sorry, no sympathy for a bunch of guys who believe that the road to paradise is paved with the bodies of dead soldiers. And don’t you think the media portrayal of Abu Ghraib perhaps played a role in the retirement of those higher-ups? Please. The “press” was salivating at the opportunity to tear down a few military commanders because they could not stand GW and they would do anything to make things look worse for him.
So get off your high horse and perhaps try to muster the same amount of outrage for Dear Leader and his kill list, his drones, his unauthorized military endeavors, and Benghazi as you do for the sworn enemies of the US. What? Can’t do it? Why, because it would be (gasp!) racist?! Or, rather, blasphemous?? Two wrongs do not make a right. Subjecting prisoners to such things accomplished nothing except offering their guards a sick thrill.

Doesn’t matter what their motives were. The pictures and military tribunals were pretty conclusive.

You’re right, you know nothing. First of all, having an erection and being aroused is not necessary for masturbating. Also, the formation of an erection is not a voluntary action. It can happen even under the most humiliating of situations. Or will you claim that if a woman gets wet while being raped that it isn’t actually rape? After all, her body reacted so she must have been enjoying it, right?

They would have constant video monitoring, so they would be helped instantly… If they fell or needed assistance.

A guard would check on them every 20 minutes.
All meals and snacks would be brought to them.
They would have family visits in a suite built for that purpose.
They would have access to a library, weight/fitness room, spiritual counseling, a pool and education…and free admission to in-house concerts by nationally recognized entertainment artists.
Simple clothing – i.e.. Shoes, slippers, pj’s – and legal aid would befree, upon request.
There would be private, secure rooms provided for all with an outdoor exercise yard complete with gardens.
Each senior would have a P.C., T.V., phone and radio in their room at no cost.

Posted on December 4, 2012 at 6:47amBeing careless about what goes on behind the walls of our prisons is just going to make the matter worse. I’m not saying that prison should be a touchy-feely luxury resort, but ignoring or, worse, condoning outright abuse, especially when perpetrated by LE, only turns criminals into worse criminals. It’s stupid to kick a dog and then act surprised when it bites you.
And believe it or not, convicts still have rights, and it’s just as much of a crime for a guard to assault them as it is for them to assault someone out on the streets, which blurs or eliminates the line between LE and criminal. It’s quite ironic when we have criminals who are being overseen by people who should actually be in a cell with them.

Posted on December 4, 2012 at 12:51amI’m sorry, but no matter how bad the inmate is, this is wrong what happened to them. The philosophy of corrections is to correct behavior, not make the bad dog “badder.” Being separated fm family and friends IS the punishment.
I was a prison chaplain and quit when the warden would not stop some of this kind of behavior on the part of his corrections staff. Many prisons have a guard staff that breaks down this way: 20% professionals, 20% malignant as the worst inmate, 60% trying to decide which 20% is in charge. CO’s (corrections officers) are not highly paid, and you end up w/a lot of young men/women who can’t find anything else to do and hire on for the state benefits. You do have a fair share of retired military (as I was) who actually want to make a difference.
You want to reduce recidivism, then you need to take a different approach. This treatment is neither firm nor fair nor justified.
How would you like it if your family or friend was incarcerated and treated this way? You’d be on your way to court to sue, yes? American prisons must do better abt REHABILITATION and not make it just retribution.

Our country has one of, if not the most, despicable prison systems in the entire Western world yet these people scoff at the atrocities that go on inside them. I guess being condemned to years of prison rape is justice in these people’s eyes, even for non-violent criminals (not that it should matter, it’s not even just for the most violent of offenders).

Like ” transparent” and ” 99% ” and ” Affordable” Housing and HealthCare…( wink, wink ) What we used to call “stealing” is now ” redistribution.” These are New Times with these radical Chicago Democrats…new definitions…anarchy …bad times to come…

Posted on December 3, 2012 at 11:25pmSorry, you missed the point. The fact that they are in prison is one thing. The other is the authority and control the guards have over them is another. The abuse of power is what I was getting at. Is that any clearer?

Posted on December 3, 2012 at 11:29pmI became a slave when I started paying income taxes at the age of 18.
When I was a victim of child labor making $1.00/hr from 10 to 16 years old (under 18 before SSN was forced at birth), I was free.
If your involved in making profit today in any way–your a slave no matter how old you are if you pay income taxes to a government who does not represent you at all (or any taxes, in that respect). Your not the opportunity anymore if your involved with Citizen profit,—your the grab bag.
Grab bg for who?—anybody but you.

Posted on December 4, 2012 at 3:55amThere is no such thing as witchcraft. There are people who BELIEVE in witchcraft, and people who perform a set of customary rituals that have been given the label “witchcraft,” and people who believe there’s something different about these customs and rituals than, say, the Christian practice of drinking wine and eating crackers. But in reality, there the exact same on a physical level–neither is magical, both are mundane actions which people ascribe a significance to which they’ve never been able to demonstrate.

It is apparent that you know nothing of the power of God and the spirit world. I am in it, I see it. I know what the good and bad can do. The power of one man over another is a form of spiritual warfare not for the feint of heart. Please believe me, I know, it happened to me. I won.
