S.E. Cupp Gets Into Heated Debate With Co-Host Over Bob Costas’ Gun Control Rant: ‘Absolutely Absurd’

S.E. Cupp Gets Into Heated Exchange With Co Host Steve Kornacki Over Bob Costas Gun Control Rant

During Monday’s edition of “The Cycle” on MSNBC, TheBlaze’s S.E. Cupp blasted NBC Sports’ Bob Costas for lecturing his audience about gun control during Sunday Night Football, calling it a “shameful” and “irresponsible” act. Costas was responding to Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher’s recent murder-suicide.

Cupp sparred with fellow co-host Steve Kornacki over whether guns or individuals are to blame for such tragedies, particularly involving domestic disputes.

“When we’re talking about the weapons, we’re not talking about domestic violence,” Cupp said. “And that does a huge disservice to a woman who is in that situation.”

Cupp said it was irresponsible for Costas to tell “millions of NFL viewers that they have permission to blame guns instead of the person who pulled the trigger.” She went on to say that giving an “inanimate object” human capabilities is “absolutely absurd.”

Costas, reading from sports columnist Jason Whitlock’s column, said:

“Handguns do not enhance our safety. They exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate arguments, and bait us into embracing confrontation rather than avoiding it.”

“Bob Costas has, I think, done something shameful and irresponsible and is going to have some blood on his hands if we continue to talk about the wrong problem, what is not the problem: handguns,” Cupp said.

Kornacki jumped in and immediately attempted to discredit Cupp’s argument.

“I wish you’d grapple with some of the statistics that are out there, S.E., before you say something like that,” Kornacki replied.

“I’ve written about this a lot, Steve, and very few domestic violence cases are committed with handguns. That’s a fact,” Cupp shot back.

Kornacki said that a domestic dispute is 12 times more likely to end in homicide when there is a firearm in the house. The source of the information is “John Hopkins University Center for Gun Control.” He also argued that the risk of homicide increases by 5 times for women when there is a gun in the house (Source: American Journal of Public Health). Finally, Kornacki said two out of three women killed by guns are involved in domestic disputes (Source: U.S. Department of Justice).

“There is a link here,” said Kornacki. “It takes a horrible situation where a woman gets beat up, but at least has a chance to get out with her life and get away from that situation, it takes that and it makes her dead.”

Cupp countered by saying most women in domestic disputes are in danger because of “fists and hands,” adding that “anything can be a weapon.”

“I think Bob Costas could have had a really great moment if he realized that he had a captive audience, mostly of men, to talk about the horrors of domestic violence,” Cupp added.

“And ignore the element that takes domestic violence and makes it 12 times more likely to lead to somebody dying? Let’s just ignore that,” Kornacki replied.

First off the 12x figure never comes into play if there is no domestic violence first.

Second and foremost why the heck don’t conservative do some straight math. Lets do a survey of Democrats who commit crimes vs. Republicans who commit crimes.
I’ll be big money most folks committing violent crimes are Democrats.
i’d take a second bet the most folks in Prison are Democrats.
It is Democrats who are irresponsible with guns and if you want to take them
away from people…take them from the Democrats and handgun crime would dissolve overnight.
Stop letting something the Democrats are 95% responsible for be blamed on Republican gun owners who support responsible gun ownership.
I am not saying there are not responsible Democratic gun owners..i am sure there are…but at the same time it is high time your party takes responsibility for giving gun ownership a bad name!

It’s sick, angry, unbalanced people who can’t control their anger who do these horrid things and hurt or kill someone.

People kill people, not objects which could even be an auto used to hurt or kill someone. Get real!

SE is correct. It is the intention to commit violence to a spouse that should be the point.

and when it comes to the gun we use for hunting, protecting oneself and family members of possible harm, but the number one reason that we have guns is to protect ourselves from a Dictator (a person or government granted absolute emergency power) over the people.

It is the politician that is worried over a law abiding citizen with a gun, than they are a criminal with a gun.

In 2011 – there were 12,996 murders committed in the USA. Of those less than 1/2 (6,009) were committed by a hand gun. 8,775 were committed by a gun… Of the 8,775 murders by guns in 2011 pales in comparison to the 48,000 people killed in Auto accidents in 2011… Before we even think about the 12 times more likely to die from violence if a hand gun is in a home, we should take peoples cars away from those who can not handle that responsibility…

First off, statistics prove that laws which make it legal for law abiding citizens ta carry concealed weapons (guns) reduce crime rates, and not by just a little. The link I’ve posted here is a statistical breakdown of the crime rates in Texas over the past 30 years and it clearly shows both a reversal of an increasing trend and a significant reduction in violent crimes after Concealed Weapons Permit laws were enacted in 1995. FACTS don’t lie!!!!

Second, about that bit about domestic violence is more likely to end in death in houses with guns… It’s like trying to say kids that eat hotdogs are more likely to choke on hotdog that adults… More kids eat hotdogs therefore the the numbers simply indicate more kids than adults choke on hotdogs, but it doesnt give any information about RATES (how many kids vs choke per 100,000 kid hodog eaters vs how many adults choke per 100,000 adult hodog eaters). Correlation doesn’t always mean Causation. You have to look at much more information than just straight numbers. For example, has anyone done a study to find out what percentage of homes where domestic violence is an issue have guns? If a high percentage do, then the correlation that homes with domestic violence that have guns are more likely to end in gun violence just supports the numbers that more homes where violence occurs also have guns.

Domestic abuse is the cause, the gun did not pick it self up and shoot her. If guns are eliminated, what will be the next item that kills 12 times more than the next. Are we to eliminate that too? Then the next, and the next. How far does it go?
How will you eliminate bare hands when you finally get to that?

      @ Strawberry

      Perhaps you should view this:
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=M1u0Byq5Qis#!

Something seemed a little off in this story. Mr Howerton noted that: The source of the information is “John Hopkins University Center for Gun Control.”(sic)

So I did a quick bit of digging and I discovered that there is a strong co-operative relationship between Johns Hopkins, the Brady Campaign, and various minor players. Domestic violence is a major strategic pressure point; “a domestic dispute is 12 times more likely to end in homicide when there is a firearm in the house”.

Two points on that; a) I cannot verify that statistic so far and if it were true, verification would surely be prominent, and, b) if guns are removed from the house, the woman is defenceless. Is that a good idea?

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ExC7fE1LaY

The FBI’s National Crime Victimization Survey indicates that by far the safest course of action for women to take when they are confronted by a criminal is to present a gun.

People promoting gun control pretend to care about the lives of innocents, but they don’t. They wish to disarm the public. As Sarah Brady of the Brady campaign said:

“Our main agenda is to have ALL guns banned. We must use whatever means possible. It doesn’t matter if you have to distort facts or even lie. Our task of creating a socialist America can only succeed when those who would resist us have been totally disarmed.”

Ok so people abuse cars and more people die by car than by gun…should everyone have their cars taken away?

Conservatives need to realize these Dems and trolls are not playing for fun…they mean it…and its time the conservatives get real and tough. You send your kids to die overseas for the American way and let these liberals do worse damage here at home. And they are not fighting fair. Time to fight their way.

GUN ISSUE: If you map out the USA with a red and blue scheme county by county as far as gun abuse or domestic violence and any crime for that matter you will find the same blue for Democrats that won the election will be the same counties with the highest crime rates by guns.
Simply put..this is a democratic base issue.
Why are conservatives labeled as the bad guys who needs to give up their guns…when in fact it is a Democrat issue?
Here is why…because the media (movies included) have painted us as the Bad guys. Bob Caustic has a image in his mind of a southern white redneck pointing a gun at him and he wants ALL guns gone. But chances are much higher that a Democrat…one of his own…would get him first.
Democrats need to shamed for the culture they have created.
We need to constantly put in their face that they need to clean up their own ranks first. Try gun control in the Blue areas first before you come after some farmer in Kansas who respects his firearm and second amendment right.
Time to Shame the Liberals with their own tactics!

If I were a kid her age, having been taught the garbage most of them were taught and early childhood was the Jim Bakker debacle, I wouldn’t think much of “RELIGION” either. Sooner or later though, we have to step back, wonder why we are even here; put pieces together and come to the accurate conclusion that we didn’t make ourselves and the one who did Truly Loves Us enough to let US develop as Souls by exercising Free Will. It would be interesting to further investigate that number and find out how many murders were committed by felons who shouldn’t have a gun to begin with? How many are gang-bangers shooting each other? I’m betting that will whittle that number down quite a bit showing a very, very small number of law-abiding WE THE PEOPLE types commit murders with guns.

That said, personally, I think S.E. is more what I would term a ‘liberal conservative’ or a ‘conservative liberal’. What used to be considered ‘conservative’ has changed a bit. Conservatives used to be about control … liberals were about live and let live. That’s changed now. Strange.

      @Strawberry…

Interesting but emotionally flawed argument Strawberry. You are definitely bitter whereas Cupp is concerned, not to mention at the respondents to your request for a definition of S E Cupp. You didn’t ask for definition of her communitcation skills. She is a conservative and her good looks have nothing to do with it, her looks are just her good fortune. What does her being an atheist have to do with anything other than as a talking point in your dislike for her conservatism and an attempt to turn her fans and anyone who likes her against her. It seems like you have a problem that some of use like her for more reasons that she is a conservative. She’s also a nice person, does that preclude her from being a conservative. Plus, she’s never said a crummy thing about you. Get over it. She makes a lot more sense than you do even when she has a bad day.

12x my ****. The crimes that are being committed with guns are by those who have an insecurity and are too stupid to articulate a solution but by fear and threat. Guns will never perpetuate the problem as thugs and weak minded fools will always find a way. Gun laws serve those who wish to oppress and not the community protecting themselves from each other. It takes shallow thinking to blame the gun as the problem since it takes a thought which turns into a decision which turns into an action to get to this point. I have a gun and have been very upset at my wife but never had an inkling to invoke fear and irrational physical abuse since I have REASON and the respect for the law.

SE should have said, “OK Steve, so for all of your Liberal data points and statistics, what SOLUTION are you proposing, if not to focus on domestic violence itself? Do you think you’re going to ban the possession of guns from the homes of all Americans who have no criminal record?”. THAT is how you redirect the debate back toward the core problem of domestic violence. If a person with a clean record can’t keep a gun in his own house, then LEGAL gun ownership in this country is no more. The criminals will continue to have plenty. The hard truth is that nothing that could have stopped this from happening other than the football player making up his own mind otherwise.

You are committing the sin we mostly attribute to hard leftist: oversimplification. Are you really saying that because someone disagrees with you or “the Party” on any issue then that can’t be conservative? Really? It also sounds like you are saying that because some people agree with what she said on the video that they agree with everything she has ever said and everything she believes. Wonder how this story would have gone if she was the registered gun owner and was trained on how to protect herself and her child. Instead of being another victim of domestic violence she might have had a chance and changed this outcome.
We need to address violence against women by training ourselves, our friends and most importantly our daughters that it does not have to be like this.
As a women and mother of seven children, with experience in domestic violence, gun ownership, proper training and mixed martial arts I have made sure I can protect myself and my family if need be.

So the liberal media runs with the story that a family member is 22 times more likely to be shot as compared to a criminal breaking into your house… Nice sound bite, unless you do the research and find out that over 99% of the time, a law abiding home owner will use their gun to hold or chase a criminal away without having to fire it into the crook. Since the gun is not fired (or, the crook was not shot) technically, you didn’t use it to shoot the intruder and it doesn’t count! They won’t report that it is 5 times more likely to keep you safe.

We have had our fair share of arguments and disagreements over the 16 years we have been married, but I would never never ever think of pulling a gun on her. That’s called a nut job, and not a responsible gun owner. Guns are only for the protection of my wife and kids if someone wants to break into my home. These stats are so pointless, your more likely to die from drowning when you buy a pool, and so on. Stats are useless, facts are not. Bottom line some ******* that is going to beat his wife, stab, rape, strangle, and so on will find a way to kill her. Often with drawn out brutal results because they have no idea what they’re doing. So in a morbid way one can even argue it’s better to die by the gun than what could happen otherwise. That is the lib trap of what if, instead of these guys will do this no matter what; Dinner is late, home late, and it never ends. It’s time we said enough, women get your lives together and leave them. As far as the men quite blaming inanimate objects for their crimes. How many people are stabbed each year? Should we outlaw butcher knives, and chainsaws because someone might use them for evil. No, in the old country we looked at the INDIVIDUAL as the one, and ONLY responsible party for their crime. As always, SE comes armed with facts and ready to fight. I am a gun-loving Chiefs fan and was happy with the way that the entire situation was handled yesterday by the Chiefs organization. Honor the victims of these crimes and hold the criminals responsible for their actions.

I was a police officer for 11 years and handled hundreds of domestic abuse cases. Not one involved a gun. Bob Costas is a communist pure and simple. Ignore the facts the man had issues with head injuries, alcohol and drugs, what kind I don’t know but considering his profession I’d bet on performance enhancing. Oops but we can’t look at that. That might cause issues for the wonderful religion of the NFL and hurt ratings and then affect the almighty dollar. Were this players issues known by the team and ignored? Perhaps a little intervention by team mates or the coaching staff could have helped this man and prevented what he did. I am so glad I gave up worshiping the NFL. Church and God are much more fulfilling on Sundays.

Not sure about anyone else, but most domestic violence situations I hear about, include punches, brooms, frying pans, hot grits, etc… and have many hurt feelings attached. I rarely hear about the handgun used in a domestic violence issue.

The source of the stats is telling. S.E. could only defend with how often women are defended by those same guns, and how firearms actual level the playing field for women. The stat didn’t say who was the homocide victim, the woman or the man. The domestic dispute doesn’t say that the dispute caused the death either.

In the end, handguns save far more womens lives than they take. S.E. is completely correct, but what she failed to do is to state the underlying case that removing a firearm from a home increases the actual risk of loss of life of everyone in the home- dramatically. 100% of unarmed homocide victims of criminal behavior died because they weren’t able to shoot back.

S.E. Cupp is right on this issue, as she is most of the issues she tackles. I wish I could find a woman like her some day. Rock on S.E.

“Is it the football scores the field goal or the kicker?”

Always remember, September 11, none of those men were armed with guns, and still committed the greatest single mass murder incident in this nation’s history. Killers will always be one step ahead of the laws trying to curtail them. Either deal with the real problem or don’t do anything at all, because this stupidity is getting us nowhere.
