AutoZone Employee (and Veteran) Fired After Using His Gun to Ward Off Armed Robber
When former AutoZone employee Devin McClean grabbed his gun from his car and chased an armed robber out of his store, he didn’t think his quick thinking would get him fired.
But it did:
“I was in fear of my life as soon as he walked through the door and I see the gun. Your heart just starts pounding,” McClean told NewsChannel 3.
As it turns out, McClean’s Yorktown, Va., store was being robbed by the so-called “fake-beard bandit” (probably the worst nickname in the history of crime), a criminal who had already knocked over about 30 businesses in the Virginia Peninsula area.
As the gunman forced the manager to unlock the store’s safe, McClean, a 23-year-old Air Force veteran, slipped out the back to retrieve his Glock 40 from his truck.
“I waited for him to go up toward the front, I ran out of the restroom, ran out to my truck where I keep my own personal weapon, grabbed my weapon, came back into the store and confronted the guy,” McClean recalls.
“When I yelled ‘freeze’ and I said ‘Stop! Drop the weapon,’ he threw his hands up with his gun still in his hand he started running,” the former AutoZone employee adds. “I felt like it was my responsibility to step in.”
The gunman wisely chose to flee.
“I watched him run down the street,” McClean told Fox News. “I came back inside and made sure my manager was okay and he called the police.”
But although the store’s manager was grateful for his employee’s bravery, McClean was fired two days later — right before Thanksgiving.
“It’s pretty much getting slapped in the face doing something that you feel was right everybody else around you feels you were right,” says McClean.
Other than to reiterate the company’s zero tolerance policy on weapons inside stores, AutoZone representatives refuse to comment on McClean’s firing.
And being laid off couldn’t have come at a worse time for McClean: He’s about to be a father.
“We’re having a little boy,” he said. “I remember when the guy came in with that gun. My initial thought was I want to make it home to my family. I want to have the opportunity to meet my son and for my son to meet his dad. And for someone to come in and shove a gun in your face?”
The former AutoZone employee explains that his decision to go back into the store and rescue his co-workers was informed by lessons he learned in the U.S. Air Force.
“Never leave a man behind,” he said. “I’m not going to leave my brother in a room with a guy with a gun — that’s threatening his life.”
“If I can save somebody’s life, I put that way above a store policy,” he adds.
And you better believe there’s been some backlash against the company for its decision to terminate McClean.
Fox News provides the details:
Cam Edwards, of NRA News, called AutoZone’s decision an “injustice.”
“It may have been corporate policy to fire Devin McLean, but it’s also an injustice. He came to the aid of a fellow employee threatened by an armed robber and was canned. They should have named him employee of the year.”
He said the nation needs more people like McLean.
“He had the chance to run away but instead he chose to arm himself with his legally owned gun and save the life of his supervisor,” Edwards told Fox News. “Wouldn’t we all like to work with someone like Devin?”
Customers have launched a boycott against the company on Facebook and a petition has been started urging them to rehire McLean.

I stand corrected. I guess the crook who brought the gun into the store didn’t know that AutoZone was a zero-tolerance for firearms establishment. It’s a good thing the black crook didn’t get arrested for bringing that weapon into that establishment. That might be contrued as ‘racist’.
See how “new-logic” works? The Law-abiding gun owner did the right thing and got punished, whilst the bad guy with the gun got away. Maybe Bob Costas will also chime in sometime tonight and praise the robber for not shooting anyone because he was exhibiting self-control.

I am sure that the AutoZone had a policy on firearms on their premises, if they did have a policy and he had a firearm they are well within their right to terminate. There is a difference between the legal vs. ethical.
tsunami, I’m talking about the employee policy’s customers don’t have to adhere to those.

Actually, CHL bearing gun owners (not necessarily Blaze posters) are quite active in boycotting and bringing economic force down on shops like this. In Ohio we’ve caused countless companies to change their policies, even United Dairy Farmers (UDF) reversed it’s anti-gun stance when it began to feel the pinch in the wallet. You see, we have a “Do not patronize” database that most every CHL holder is guided to, usually by their CHL instructor, here in Ohio. So yes, this kind of boycott does work. It’s too bad you have nothing better to do in life than sneer and snicker at others, or you’d be familiar with how real life works for things like this.

Posted on December 4, 2012 at 4:38pmI am sure Autozone’s concern is a wrongful death lawsuit that could cost the company millions. The theft of property and cash is covered by insurance. While I applaud the courage and the efforts of the employee, the Autozone policy probably makes good business sense. I think a smarter route would have been for the store to reprimand the employee, have him go for some remedial training and then give him a nice Christmas bonus.

Your chances of being killed now during a robbery are greatly increased.
The best thing to combat crime is for the populace to be armed, more people like this hero. But the way things are going we will probably get the opposite as it seems every move made by government is the opposite of what is good for us. To be expected in a world led by the devil.

Posted on December 5, 2012 at 1:15amThere are a few things here we should all think about….
First is the company’s right to say who can and can’t carry a weapon on their property. While I support their right to say what they want carried into their store and by whom I will NOT go into a business that prohibits my gun. We should not boycott over it though.
Second and in my mind most important is that this guy is a hero…NOT a criminal! GUNS ALSO SAVE LIVES!!!
And third… this young man did NOT suffer an injustice by being fired! This company can and should be allowed to fire you if they don’t like your hair color…imo.
We all sometimes forget that a job is NOT a right! This guy did the right thing but sometimes doing the right thing can cost you something. That is what makes a hero a hero! He did the right thing and may have saved lives and property but crying about what you lost doing it diminishes the sacrifice of the heroic act.
Was firing this guy a mistake? Yes in my opinion but I am not the owner of that company. He can find another job the one he had is not that good anyway and he and the rest of us can sleep better because he was there. We NEED more good people carrying guns.

Posted on December 5, 2012 at 1:22amThis story is why I don’t go into a store or bank that prohibits my gun…If a criminal sees as I do a sign that says “no guns” he knows he is the ONLY one with a gun and can then do as he pleases.
However that is the right of the owner and I support that as much as I do my right to carry one.
I also support Auto Zone’s right to fire him for breaking that rule….though I think it is a mistake to do so.

A boycott is not necessary here. Their customers will get the idea that shopping there is unsafe and will stop on there own.
This hero will be fine and will get a better job … if I hear of him suing over this I will never again refer to him as a hero but as part of our problem …. Posted on December 5, 2012 at 9:12pmMany retailers have similar policies. They are more worried about the possible disgruntled employee than they are the armed robbers who decide that they don’t want to leave any living witnesses. The best way to solve these kind of policies is the lawsuit that they will be hit with when a bunch of customers are shot down by a gang of thieves.
I’m glad that Ohio has adopted the same plan of action that the AZ civilian Defense League has been using for years against those businesses who discriminate against law abiding gun owners. Funny how owners and managers seem to change their attitudes when confronted with the idea of losing thousands of dollars worth of business on a weekly basis.

This guy was plain wrong…He could have likely escalated the situation. Compliance with giving the money is generally the best scenario, especially when it is not your own money.
While I will say he had every right to defend himself with lethal force, there is no expectation that there will not be consequences to his actions. He is lucky to be alive. In the end the robber still got away…Just what did he think he was going to do? Shoot first? Shoot the robber after he shot his manager or himself? Just think about the scenario and all the over-reactors will realize that just because you have a weapon does not mean you have to pull it out.
““Never leave a man behind,” he said. “I’m not going to leave my brother in a room with a guy with a gun — that’s threatening his life…” Unfortunately that is EXACTLY what he did when he left to go get his weapon…Did he call 911 first?

I will go to O’Reilly’s instead. I will first find out if they have a stupid zero tolerance for guns too. I will not even buy a cotter pin from them now. Posted on December 5, 2012 at 4:21amI agree! I won’t purchase from Auto Zone due to stupid termination AND because it’s less safe to be there. Clearly this veteran knew how to handle a gun properly and used his skills to neutralize a bad situation. He should have been promoted, not fired. I like Do Not Patronize lists and will seek them.
My life would be different if I’d had help from a hero like that vet. I left a corrupt law firm who gave my home address to former state appointed (criminal, mental health) clients. One came to my home with a gun, threatened to shoot me on courthouse steps (anyone can access lawyer court dates online). I lacked evidence to get no contact order-their word v. mine-they have RIGHTS.
Kind cop/gun instructors suggested I move–I did–person came to my office w gun. No matter I worked 2 jobs & attended night college 10 yrs & worked through law school–person had “rights”.
So, after decades of hard work, my choice was retire or still publish office address. I closed firm. I can’t do vet appeals pro bono (free) now, or help impoverished. I tithed (free) 10% of my practice to those who couldn’t afford me, got kids away from drug/violent parents. No more, so be it.
Life ain’t always fair–oh well! I train to remain gun proficient and pray to God I never need to stop a threat. If that vet was my next door neighbor (instead of the obamaDrone), maybe different ending.
I know Law enforcement IS great, IF they arrive in time… but we need the 2nd amendmen

Posted on December 4, 2012 at 5:26pmThe lawyers want you to cry and snivel and beg for your lives. They want you to degrade and humiliate yourself in the face of low-life punks. They want you to hand it over. And the store executives lap it up like a dog laps up it’s own puke. If you make it easy for the goons to do it, guess what? They do it MORE. Don’t you execs see that? Same thing with bank robbery. Hell, all you need now is a fricking piece of paper with a threat on it to succeed. Banks should post a guard with a 12 guage shotgun or powerful semi-auto rifle behind mirrored glass in plain sight of the counter. I guarantee you after news gets out that punks are getting blown away with shotguns that crap will stop in a heartbeat. But oh, we can’t have that. Some poor minority without a dad will get smoked and everybody will cry racism. Then, the banks will run for the hills like scalded apes. Can’t have that. (sarc)

I live outside of Dayton OH and have already done the same… I have an O’Relly’s here in Tipp :)
I do not believe in Boycotts and I support their right to say what and by whom things come into their store but I will not go into a place were my gun is not welcomed.
To be honest I do not want to use it. If a store has a no gun sign then the criminals know they are the only ones that have them…if I have mine on me and am in a store like that it WILL GET USED (if it is getting robbed when I am there and is likely given the sign)!
Criminals should be VERY afraid if they do NOT see that sign!
FYI all ye business owners out there those of us who take the time and get a permit we ARE ALREADY FOLLOWING THE LAW and do NOT use our guns to hurt you or others and you should be glad we are there! Every one around me is safer because I have a gun!

While Auto Zone is within it’s rights to fire him for bringing the gun in it is also our right to choose to business else where and allow Auto Zone to feel the financial pressure until/if they change their policy.
