Bob Costas Says Gun Control Lecture Was a ‘Mistake’ But…

NEW YORK, NY – NOVEMBER 19: Host/TV personality Bob Costas attends the 2012 Golden Goggle awards at the Marriott Marquis Times Square on November 19, 2012 in New York City. (Credit: Getty Images)
NBC Sports’ Bob Costas ignited a firestorm after his controversial remarks on gun control during the Sunday Night Football halftime show. He was responding to the tragic murder-suicide involving NFL linebacker Jovan Belcher, who killed his girlfriend and then committed suicide at the Kansas City Chiefs practice facility.
While he has refused to walk back his remarks, Costas almost apologized for the rant during an interview for “The Dan Patrick Show,” saying it was a “mistake” to make such a complex argument when there wasn’t enough time to “flesh” it out.
Costas said he has received “tremendously positive” feedback as well as “considerable backlash” following his comments. He blamed some of the backlash on a coordinated effort by the “gun lobby.” He told Patrick that he was informed by a producer he would have about 1 minute and 15 seconds to talk about the Belcher case. He chose to use that time to read from sports columnist Jason Whitlock’s column, which blames guns for the tragedy.
“My mistake is I left it open for too much communication,” he said. He then blamed the criticism that followed on a lack of time to thoroughly discuss “football culture, the gun culture, domestic violence.”
Costas went on to say that he violated his own broadcasting rule:
“A friend of mine in broadcasting pointed this out to me yesterday, and I agree with him. He said, ‘you violated your own rule.’ Because we have had this discussion before. I’ve always said, if you’re going to get into touchy topics, nuanced topics, make sure that you have enough time to flesh them out…or save them for forums where you do. In this particular situation, the timeliness of it was, if you’re going to comment on it at all, it had to be this Sunday.”
Watch Costas’ appearance on “The Dan Patrick Show” below:
Costas also blasted his critics who have called for him to be fired over the incident, saying it’s “beyond absurd” to want everyone you disagree with to be fired.
“This is simply a case of: some people don’t agree with it, or they don’t agree with what they think I was saying, and therefore, it would be okay if I was booted off the air … ‘yeah, let’s fire everybody we don’t agree with.’ It’s beyond absurd.”
He joked that there is apparently more regard for the Second Amendment in some circles than free speech.
So where does Costas really stand on the Second Amendment? He explains: “Well, here’s where I stand: I do not want to see the Second Amendment repealed.”
“People should be able to own guns for their own protection. Obviously, those who are hunters,” Costas added. “The access to guns is too easy in some cases. I don’t see any reason why a citizen should be able to arm himself, as they can in some states and some cases, arm themselves in ways that only the police or the military should able to — to have a virtual militia purchased by mail order or purchased at gun shows. Why do you need a semi-automatic weapon? What possible use is there for a citizen to have a semi-automatic weapon?”
Any answers?

Posted on December 4, 2012 at 7:59pmDESERTROSIE, I’ll tell you why, because when an attacker is closing the distance on me or my family & it warrants deadly force, I want to make sure he/they go down. If a double tap center mass doesnt get the job done, (which it should) then a follow up semi auto salvo is just what I want.
As far as using a semi auto when hunting, I am not going to even explain. Obviously you have never been hunting. Deer, hogs, elk, bears, even ducks, quail & other fowl.

Posted on December 4, 2012 at 8:05pm@desertrose:because they are fun to shoot. Because our 2nd ammendment says we can own them. Because some people can afford them, because we have progressed into a semi-automatic over the years. There are a lot of reasons. To say: just because someone kills someone with a gun doesn’t make the gun bad, or to say: some people murder with knives, poisens, screwdrivers, etc. etc. and we don’t outlaw them, to people is useless anymore. If you have the opinion guns are bad you aren’t going to listen to reason. If you think semi-auto’s are bad you aren’t going to listen. So let people who want them be, and go on your way..because we can and you should.

Posted on December 4, 2012 at 9:26pmTo: DESERTROSE1960,
You have continually missed the whole point about the whole gun control thing. The second amendment to the Constitution of the United States was intended to allow the unrestricted allowance of any type of firearms or weapons necessary to the citizen populace to be able to allow them to forcefully negate any incursions on their rights as citizens, against an out-of-control government, it had NOTHING to do with hunting. I could go out tomorrow and bag a deer with a bow and arrow. Unfortunately, we have “progressed” to the point where communists and/or globalists have overtaken the government and are trying to take that right away, and for good reason….they are afraid that we will use those arms against them when they try to crush those that still believe in the original intent of the founding fathers of the United States. Remember that the original “gun control” laws were meant to take guns OUT of the hands of minorities….namely, those of African-American descent…and they were NOT initiated by the Republicans. There is much more I could say on the subject, but I will allow you to do your own research and realize you are wrong.

Posted on December 4, 2012 at 10:52pmI wonder if Costas can intelligently discuss the common issue of killing, murder, and suicide. It’s all about ending the life of someone. Guns are not the problem (whether semi-auto or not). One bullet can kill. So can one knife, one arrow (familiar?), one bomb, one bat, one statue, one rock…etc.
Hey Costas…talk please about killing. Forget the weapon. Killing is the issue…you know…doing away with your problems by killing. Please educate folks about people becoming dead…instead of blathering about guns…it’s called “coping”. Teach people to cope w/their problems. Get a divorce and move on. Give the child to someone else…don’t kill it. Tell your dad you hate him…don’t kill him. Tell the bully’s at school they are stupid and ignore them…don’t kill them. Leave your girl friend/boy friend. You don’t have to hurt them back. Move on and move up.

You do realize, idiot, that the fact that the weapon was a semi-auto handgun isn’t the reason that the woman died from gunshot wounds right? I mean if he had of shot her 6 times, as with a revolver, she would be just as dead. Your arguement about semi auto weapons is beyond stupid. If I am a good shot, one is all it will take. But just to satisfy your curiosity, if you have an intruder break into your house and it is dark do you want 6 shots or 15? You obviously don’t know anything about firearms except you want to limit some law abiding gun owners right to buy the firearm of his choice. I don’t care if you own a weapon or not, so why the hell do you care if I own one? It is not like you would ever have to worry about being on the business end of it unless you were breaking into my house or physically harming my family, guaranteed you would find out how good a shot I am if you are doing either one of those.

Also why do hunters keep handguns (which are almost always semi-automatic)? For small game or close range kills. Not all hunters are fully experienced, and do not always get clean kills. Sometimes they need close range weapon for defense from an injured beast.

Bobble Head Bob, football is a violent sport that can lead to an aggressive social behavior and combine with illegal drugs and alcohol and we have a problem. We should then push to ban football, drugs (already done), and alcohol and that should solve most of the problem.

Typical liberal stereotyping and assumptions, First either he is making this assumption in hunting purposes which I can give you an example of a time when a semi automatic weapon for “hunting” saved my life or at a minimum from being mauled by a bore hog. If you’ve ever hunted them you understand they dont usually go down with one shot and after the first shot they come after you naturally lol. Now lets assume he was saying it in the context of “home defense.” What happens if more than one intruder breaks into your home and all you have is a bolt action rifle to defend yourself? Are you supposed to call time out everytime you have to reload? Giving in-animate objects human qualities is absurd such as guns kill people, and by this arguement cars drive drunk and pencils misspell words

Posted on December 5, 2012 at 9:31amDear DesertRose and any and all other ******* idiots who only know enough about firearms to jump up and bark when they hear the magic code words “semi-automatic weapon” : Semi-automatic simply means that the weapon will fire each time the trigger is pulled without having to take an extra step to chamber a new/fresh round and will continue to do so until there are no more live rounds remaining in the cylinder or magazine. A double-action revolver (hammer does not have to be cocked before each trigger pull to fire) is technically a semi-automatic weapon (though they are seldom referred to as such).
That said, the constitution guarantees me “the right to keep and bear arms” – for my protection, for hunting and sporting purposes, to collect and display on my wall, or even to melt down and turn into some kind of goofy art piece should I so desire; it is my RIGHT to own a weapon or as many weapons as I choose. If a citizen can afford to buy and maintain a friggin’ battleship that he wants to dock on his property, in my opinion he has every right to do so under the constitution.
Rant off.

The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops that can be, on any pretence, raised in the United States. Posted on December 4, 2012 at 9:07pmExcellent points CLOGGA and I wholeheartedly concur with that assessment. Perfect example, not too long ago I accidently swerved over on traffic and didn’t see the little car in my blind spot. The guy pulled up next to me and shouted, “You deserve to have your ass beat”! I motioned & told him “hey sorry man”, and went about my way. That guy had no clue the sh#T storm that could have been unleashed upon him had I beeen a rogue individual in legal posession of a loaded firearm and two xtra full mags of ammo. oh and another full box in the console.

Now CNN is reporting that our “too manly” society is responsible for the guy killing his gf & himself, lol thats another hilarious lefty analysis. Go figure.

Costas…please try to think it out before speaking and confirming your ignorance.

Posted on December 4, 2012 at 7:05pmWhy do you need a powered screwdriver when all you need is a screwdriver? Probably a bad comparison but, i’ll tell you what: I would hate to look down the barrel of a semi automatic. Plus, I bet their a lot of fun to shoot.

Posted on December 4, 2012 at 7:04pmEveryone is entitled to their opinion in this country. But I don’t want to hear a announcer give their opinions during halftime of Sunday Night Football. And when they give wrong information giving their opinions it makes it that much worse. If Belcher would have beat his girlfriend to death with a bat I wonder if Costas would have spoke out against bat control.

Posted on December 4, 2012 at 11:38pmCostas: During the battle of the Little Big Horn, which weapon do you think Custer or the Indians would use if they’d had a different choice? A single shot…or a Semi Auto??? Hmmmm?
Let’s say for argument that Custer’s soldiers all had semi-auto’s. Would they have lost that battle?
Apparently the Indians had better numbers or better weapons. It’s that simple.

The second amendment promises us the right to arm ourselves to insure our freedom from tyranny. And for that purpose we must be adequately armed. So Bob,you limp wristed sissyboy,go home, watch Lifetime Network and STFU!!

Posted on December 4, 2012 at 7:07pmNot useful. People should be able to voice their opinions, especially those that are in error as we have a chance to really understand their thinking. Poor Mr. Costas is just badly misinformed and follows the wrong line of reasoning. It’s common.
I can answer his question though, Semi-Automatic weapons keep us on par with those that might have the power to take away our rights. That’s the point of the Second Amendment. If you can wield as much firepower as the Police and Military, you are still worthy of respect. If all you can do is wield a one shot pop gun, you aren’t going to stand up against someone with an assault rifle.
Gun rights aren’t about WHAT kind of gun you have, they are about responsibly using firearms for their intended purpose. If you want laws that restrict people that shouldn’t have firearms (Criminals, Mentally Ill, or People with histories of violent responses to normal situations) then that would be a rational and reasonable gun control discussion to have. Taking away firearms is irrational and beyond realistic. You try to take them, you get the civil war you want to avoid. It’s quite simple actually.

But it’s our second amendment rights that will protect our free speech! If we lose our right to bear arms, it’s over. 2nd amendment and Free Speech go hand in hand.

Sir,
The second amendment is not about hunting. It’s for the citizenry to protect themselves from the government if it should fall into the hands of tyrants. And yes, the people should be able to have the same guns as the police and military, and form militias. That’s how you stay free when tyranny knocks on your door. Does this guy ever read the history of the U.S.? Has he ever read the writings of the founding fathers in this regard? ……….Can this dope even read?
