‘I Do Not Despise You, Glenn’: Hear ABC Reporter Jake Tapper’s Interview on Beck’s Radio Show

ABC News’ senior White House correspondent Jake Tapper appeared on Glenn Beck’s radio show this morning to discuss his new book “The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor.” In addition to covering the literary project, Beck and Tapper discussed journalists’ coverage of President Barack Obama and the future of U.S. involvement in Afghanistan.

Before bringing Tapper on the air, Beck described him as a “great journalist” and quipped that the ABC staffer “probably despises” him. Wasting no time in responding to this latter point, one of the first comments to come from Tapper was a rejection of this notion.

“I do not despise you, Glenn,” he said. “I have a limited reservoir of loathing and you do not earn any of it.”

Following this dialogue, Beck asked the journalist to explain the background behind ”The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor.” Tapper explained that the idea for the book is rooted in the birth of his son, an event that unfolded back in 2009. He described holding his newborn baby while in his wife’s hospital room and, out of the corner of his eye, he recalls noticing a news report on television; it highlighted a combat outpost in Afghanistan that was overrun by the Taliban.

“Holding my son and hearing about other sons taken from this world — there was something about that moment that just captured me,” Tapper said, noting that the experience of seeing new life come to fruition that day juxtaposed against the carnage on the screen profoundly impacted him.

Tapper told Beck that, after initially seeing the event on the news, he became interested in learning more about the soldiers involved and their courageous stories. While he did not hear much more about the attack in the media, the White House correspondent decided to do his own investigative work, culminating in the completion of “The Outpost.”

An official description of the book provides more context:

At 6:00 a.m. on the morning of October 3, 2009, Combat Outpost Keating was viciously attacked by Taliban insurgents. The 53 U.S. troops, having been stationed at the bottom of three steep mountains, were severely outmanned by nearly 400 Taliban fighters. Though the Americans ultimately prevailed, their casualties made it one of the war’s deadliest battles for U.S. forces. And after more than three years in that dangerous and vulnerable valley a mere 14 miles from the Pakistan border, the U.S. abandoned and bombed the camp. A Pentagon investigation later concluded that there was no reason for Outpost Keating to have been there in the first place.

THE OUTPOST is a tour de force of investigative journalism. Jake Tapper exposes the origins of this tragic and confounding story, exploring the history of the camp and detailing the stories of soldiers heroic and doomed, shadowed by the recklessness of their commanders in Washington, D.C. and a war built on constantly shifting sands.

Beck and Tapper also discussed Afghanistan and the notion that the U.S. will likely play a role in securing the nation, to some degree, well after the 2014 deadline. Tapper said that he believes “elite forces” will stay in place beyond expected withdrawal times.

“I think it ends with most U.S. troops coming home in 2014. I think it ends with a lot of fighting in Afghanistan. And I think there will be some setbacks,” he said of the fragile situation in the Middle Eastern nation.

Toward the end of the interview, Beck praised the journalist for being one of the only people in media to “use common sense and logic” in questioning the Obama administration. Tapper responded by claiming that he hears smart questions from his colleagues as well, steering clear of making any generalizations about the ways in which other reporters have covered Obama.

  I’m grateful to Glenn Beck. He is a Profit with the Gift of seeing over the horizon. Witness FEMA concentration camps and the Caliphate, both of which are almost here, as is the imminent dictatorial, communist UN takeover of America, postponed only months because Obama chose to allow elections because he knew he’d bought the votes and had the fraudulent vote locked up.

Shake the Jake. I watch abc news just to see the bias. And it is quite thick. Tapper is no better than any of the rest of them. He purposefully acts straight enough times so he can claim to be fair. But the rest of the time he is a disgusting as the rest of them.

Just like Ayote, McCain, Brown, Barraso, Collins, Lugar, and Murkowski, voting to let the U.N. having control and sovereinty over us. TREASON!

Jake Tapper is the ONLY member of the White House Press corps who has the stones to question the current administration. He is alone in a sea of liberal progressive media elitists, and should be given credit for standing and asking tough questions. No, he will not ask ALL of the tough questions, because he understands that if he does, he loses his press pass. It’s up to the American public to DEMAND better of our press than we now get (we’re finally doing just that, and as a result, cnn, msnbc, abc and cbs are drowning in red ink). It may be too late, but America is finally waking up.

  Sorry. I can’t agree. Tapper asks the spokeskid one hard question per month on average. The rest of the time he’s just as busy as his colleagues, hating Repubs and Conservatives. The fact that he wrote a decent book is an outlier.

I have a hard time understanding why Glenn gives this guy a soapbox. If he wants to give anyone a soapbox it should be the moms and dads who are working together to raise their children in a country that no longer looks like the one they grew up in. Before all you progressives start pi$@ing your pants I will explain. I grew up in a school that was integrated and have always worked with every segment of society as an adult. I am not talking about complexion–I am talking about character which is something that most people seem to no longer respect. 57% are against O Bummer Care but they still voted for the Social Med in Chief! 54% are not in favor of Gay Marriage but they still voted for Obama. Less than 36% say they are Pro-Choice but the rest still voted for someone who has no problem with partial-birth abortion. Glenn–if you want people to listen you need to do one thing–listen to what they have to say. Mitt Romney is not President for the same reason John McCain isn’t–they were not the second (never mind the first) choice of anyone. I know you like Romney but the truth is many Catholics and Evangelical chose not to vote because they would not vote for a Mormon. If you are going to champion Huntsman in the 2016 you will see him lose as well. He can’t win–end of story!

I remember when this outpost was over run. I was thinking, “Dien Bien Phu”. Of course this was in a valley and Phu was on a hill, both in obvious unnecessary locations. It makes you wonder why, why, why the military continues to promote idiots with degrees in poli-sci and not in military history.

I’m not in the least bit interested in Jake Tapper. There are so many things to be involved and concerned with, my time is way to valuable to waste with him. I disagree completely with Glenn that Tapper is fair. I turned off Glenn for the day.

Tapper is definitely more of a journalist than anyone else at ABC or any other major news network but he doesn’t hold a candle to Jennifer Griffin and Katherine Herridge of Fox News. They are tough and hold to their stories no matter who they are offending. They got us as close to the bottom of the Bengazi scandal as we’re probably ever going to get. They protect their sources to get the stories. Tapper’s not bad and he’ll go for the truth at least to a point, as far as his bosses at ABC will allow him to go and THEN there are the fake Journolisters who do nothing but protect the Dems and Obama because they are so biased they refuse to put them in harms way. They do so by NOT reporting the truth and attacking the right exactly when it’s the left that’s causing the problems. I’m so sick of the crap. I Love Glenn though! He’s an amazing man who speaks the truth and I to don’t care one bit about crying. Those times are some of the most memorable times listening to him in my life, ie., the week of 9-11 and he was on the radio on that Friday, Day of National Prayer. I spoke to him and it was so amazing. We’d had a tropical storm Gabrielle come thru in FL that very morning. The aftermath of the storm; we had no power (I was listening to him on battery operated radio on 970WFLA) which was his flagship station b4 he went national. I’m a resort manager so we had folks who couldn’t fly home yet & things were a mess! It was a bad week for sure and Glenn bright

Not interested in anything he has to say. He could do more to say the country that his son will grow up in. Will not buy his book. Beck is a business man first and I understand why he gives these sell outs a voice. But I no longer allow their rhetoric in my house. Jake become a real reporter and investigate the liar-in-chief and expose his dishonesty. The future of our country is at stake and you are not doing all that you can to save it. Become a real journalist and I will listen again.

  I am currently reading “The Outpost”…..not exactly enthralled with Tapper; as I am suspicious of all “journalists/propagandist”…..however, this book is noteworthy and highlights the bravery and sacrifices of our American Fighting Forces.

  I like Jake too… but it a darn shame he doesn’t have the balls to call out the MSM for not doing their jobs… He himself said he didn’t hear much more about the attack from the media… but if Bush or another Republican had been President it would have been covered day in and day out 24/7 for months!
