Obama-Backer Charles Barkley Talks Guns With Bob Costas: ‘I Carry a Gun’ Because ‘I Just Feel Safer With It’

Charles Barkley to Bob Costas: I Carry a Real Gun Because I Just Feel Safer With It

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – MAY 31: NBA analyst Charles Barkley of TNT rides onto the set in Thunder Alley on a hose before the San Antonio Spurs take on the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game Five of the Western Conference Finals of the 2012 NBA Playoffs at Chesapeake Energy Arena on May 31, 2012 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Reacting to Bob Costas’  controversial halftime gun control lecture on Sunday night, retired NBA all-star Charles Barkley (and outspoken Republican critic and Obama supporter) said he carries “a real gun” because he feels “safer with it.”

Barkley, appearing on “Costas Tonight,” said he doesn’t think the nation has a “gun culture” but rather a “crime culture” especially “in the black community.”

“You know, we as black people always, we don’t have respect for one another. You know, we’ve got more black men in prison than we do in college and crime in our neighborhoods is running rampant,” Barkley said. “And I know everybody reacts when something like the Belcher thing happens, but being black, this is something you deal with all the time. And it’s just sad. I’m a guy, I carry a gun. I carry a gun.”

Costas then pointed out that Barkley lives in Arizona where he can “legally carry a gun.”

“Even when I lived in Philadelphia, I’ve had a gun, I’ve carried a gun in my car every year in my life since I was 21, 22. Never had to use it,” Barkley added.

“Are you packing right now?” Costas asked jokingly. “Just being sure.”

“No, no no. I can beat you and John,” the Hall-of-Famer replied.

Like many responsible gun owners, Barkley went on to explain that he hopes he never has to use his gun, but having it makes him feel “safer” and gives him a “sense of peace.”

“I just feel safer with it because we have jocks who get robbed all the time,” he said. “Road rage and things like that, I feel a sense of peace when I have it when me. But it would take extreme circumstances for me to even touch it.”

Tennis great John McEnroe disagreed with Barkley, saying he feels safer without having a gun. He then praised New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg for trying to get as many guns off the street as possible.

Barkley was unmoved and said it was his “personal choice.”

“I just feel safer with it,” he reiterated.

Costas will now be calling Charles Barkley ‘Dirty Harry’ like he just called each of us: http://www.thedailycandidate.com/video/2012/dec/costas_dirty_harry.html

You know what, Dirty Harry is awesome, I accept that title. And when I, Dirty Harry, saves Bob Costas from an insane lunatic with a knife or a gun, he can kiss my boots.

Then again, even Bob Costas has an armed escort walking with him at most times.

Charles for the most part is a fool. One has to listen to him for over a year before something wise comes from his mouth. This was one of those fare moments. On the other hand, we have a liberal fool, John McEnroe. Liberals like him have to lie to try to support their causes. Most of you reading this know that no real man, no honest man, would say he is more safe without a gun. Just use your common sense, in what situation would not having a gun, actually save your life. McEnroe is a liar, which is what you have to be, to be a true liberal.

It hasn’t occurred to effete ignoramuses like Bob Costas and John McEnroe that Kasandra Parker may have been alive if she had had a gun.

Every massacre in recent history – in the US and Europe – occurred in a gun -free zone.

The safest place in America is where there are gun owners around – the more the safer.

Why doesn’t Bob Costas know this? Perhaps he knows and just lies about it being dangerous to be around guns.

Also, too bad Belcher’s girlfriend didn’t carry a gun for safety. Frankly that would have been her only hope with a guy that big wanting you dead.

Good on Barkly for coming out and telling the truth about crime and how he chooses to exercise is freedom to choose to carry a firearm that is guaranteed to him by our constitution!

In all fairness, DO NOT blame the entire state. Blame Crook County and all their cronies up there in Chicago. When they have about 55 of the 100 votes, they can pretty much do whatever they want and impose it on the entire state. You can take a look at the election we just had and look at what the areas south of Chicago did. There were 10 counties that voted IN FAVOR of concealed carry. Sadly, all of those voices will go unheard because of how much power the north side of the state has. There is a reason most of us have been saying for years that Cook County and all those should just split off and form a North Illinois and South Illinois. They can have their gun control and violence, and let us have our safety and peace.

Costas is a total idiot who has no business giving his opinion on ANYTHING except sports….and even his ability in that is questionable. Gee Bob, should we ban kitchen knives since thousands are stabbed every year, or maybe cell phones since people have walked in front of cars and gotten killed. What should we the law abiding people have to protect ourselves from the law-breaking gun carrying criminals?….huh Bobby boy? Maybe the real way to assure safety is to ban cars….do you know how many people get hit by a car every year Bob?
I know the real problem is those guns that just jump up on their own and shoot people. They are such a danger…I feel your anger Bob. We would not want to stop the PERSON that pulls the trigger…no….we want to blame that bad ol’ gun for releasing its bullet with absolutely no provocation. You just never know when that gun is going to just go off on its own do we? Hey Bob did you know that the Swiss REQUIRE their citizens have weapons?…..And they train them to use it properly? The crime rate there is very low since everybody is armed…so just why and how does gun control work to reduce crime? The cities with gun control have the worst crime….really, I would love to hear your explanation……

Costas should keep talking about it, keep the conversation going. Truth is on our side. As long as he brings the opposing viewpoint into the conversation, I hope he never stops talking about it. Then maybe we’ll get to hear the truth about gun control and how it disarms the victims. Maybe we can talk about all the rape and murder in Chicago and Washington DC where they have some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation. I’d say it’s progress when a liberal Democrat like Charles Barkley takes the side of the Constitution.

Taking this argument further, there are a couple of good ways for Republicans to appeal to black voters. Make the case for the 2nd amendment (we want you to be able to protect yourself from crime if you live in the inner city, or anywhere for that matter) and make the case for ending the war on drugs, which disproportionately punishes and imprisons blacks for a non-violent crime. Ron Paul started to go there during the Republican debates, but ending the war on drugs needs to become a core principle of the Republican Party and minorities have to know we’re on their side against the government imprisoning them for what they put in their own bodies.

Me, I’m with Charles, I don’t ever plan to use any of my handguns except for target practice. But, I like having that option available. Not too long ago we had a home invasion not to far from where I live….and that is out in the middle of nowhere….four guys invaded a home each packing a handgun AND a rifle. In that case, the homeowner was able to get to his gun (not sure if it was a handgun or a rifle); but the bottom line, 4 guys broke in; 3 guys escaped.

I agree with you. My wife is uncomfortable around guns, so I generally have alternative weaponry around for home security, but Charles has shot it right in the hoop, it’s a crime culture issue, not a gun culture issue. I have been shooting and using firearms since I was 9 and was taught gun safety since I could comprehend what guns do and the effects. I’m doing the same for my boys now with the help of my dad and through other programs.

Guns don’t kill people. People kill people. Guns are just a tool, just like bow & arrows, swords, knives, hatchets, cars and falling objects, all have been used in the past. Heck, if someone is bent on killing, there is no need for a tool, the right pressure at the right spot, or too much torque in the right direction….that’s all she wrote. That or listening to those on the hill for too long.

DUH MONK . . . I got a hose you can drink from:

“I’m going to vote Democratic no matter what.” When asked to elaborate on the term “fake Christians” Barkley explained:

“Well, I think they — they want to be judge and jury. Like, I’m for gay marriage. It’s none of my business if gay people want to get married. I’m pro-choice. And I think these Christians — first of all, they’re supposed to be — they’re not supposed to judge other people. But they’re the most hypocritical judge of people we have in this country. And it bugs the hell out of me. They act like they’re Christians. And they’re not forgiving at all.”

Is that a joke? Guns don’t run on batteries. Just mechanics and the explosion from the bullet.

PORKY, dang, wish that I had gotten to this one earlier. Too bad that you are off duty now and have turned in your keys for the day. You and I could have really had some fun with those battery operated guns you believe in. Maybe some of them are hybrids, hunh? Wow, and with that typo gripe you made above too. Too bad. Catch you tomorrow I guess.

      @GRIMMSTER -

Heh, heh, heh. I see what you did there and I love it.

I’ll have to make a mental note to check back later to see if pork_anvil_encinom_wango_buddyjoze (a.k.a. Sgt. Stedenko of the Proofreading Police) takes your bait. If he does, please practice ‘catch and release’ so that he can come back here and continue to amuse us all with his witty comments. :)
