Church Cancels ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’ Play Following Atheist Outrage, Threats Over School Trip

Charlie Brown may be a harmless cartoon character, but atheist activists in Little Rock, Arkansas, have pushed fervently to prevent a local public school from seeing a church production featuring the popular children’s figure. In the wake of the intense controversy over Terry Elementary School’s decision to send children to see “A Charlie Brown Christmas” at Agape Church, the house of worship has now cancelled the student matinee performance of the show.

While the children who were excited to attend the play may be disappointed, Agape’s pastor, Happy Caldwell, made it clear that the decision was made in the best interest of the teachers and actors, alike — parties who would, no doubt, come under fire if the production continued as planned.

“It is not our desire to put hard-working, sacrificial teachers and cast members in harm’s way,” Caldwell said in a statement to Fox News. “While we regret the loss of students who will not get this particular opportunity right now, we have taken the school matinees off the table.”

As previously reported, the Arkansas Society of Freethinkers (ASF) was actively fighting against plans to send kids to see “A Charlie Brown Christmas” during the school day on Dec. 14. The group claims that its angst over the show has nothing to do with the traditional cartoon and everything to do with the separation of church and state.

“We’re not saying anything bad about Charlie Brown,” Anne Orsi, a lawyer and vice-president of the Arkansas Society of Freethinkers (ASF), told KARK-TV late last month. “The problem is that it’s got religious content and it’s being performed in a religious venue and that doesn’t just blur the line between church and state, it over steps it entirely.”

The church made its decision following ASF’s public statements that the group was seeking legal advice and considering a lawsuit against the Little Rock School District. According to district officials, the decision to cancel was exclusively made by Agape; education staffers had consulted with their own legal advisers who said that the trip was appropriate and were still planning to allow children to attend.

“Christmas is a Christian holiday — hence it’s name – Christmas,” Caldwell added in his statement, also going on to praise the school’s principal for not backing down. “Our program addresses its origins with light-hearted songs and theatre. The context of the birth of Christ is broadly described in both Old and New Testament texts.”

With the church removing itself from the equation, it seems the debate over the show has now concluded.

The danger of education vouchers is that the government can start demanding what a school teaches… You’ll have the same problem as in public schools, with the potential risk to danger of freedom of religion in the schools themselves.

my Stepmother called me about my 72 year old father’s health…he has all but stopped eating and has all but stopped talking to anyone. She asked him what was wrong..if he felt sick. He told her that he never thought he would live to see “Our Country” being run as it is being now. He also told her that that he feared for his Grandchildren and what they are soon to go through. My Dad is a 3 tour Vietnam Vet and a true American….I wonder if others are out there that are actually having health problems due to the current events…

If you’re a Christian who is turning your children over to Godless socialists at a State run school for several hours a day, don’t be surprised if they chose not to become Christians when they grow up. Of course, if you don’t mind being separated from your children for eternity, I guess that wouldn’t bother you.

Whenever possible, people should homeschool. There are good networks of homeschooling parents out there in which parents can take turns and in some cases where a particular teacher will hold a class once a week rather than going to all homes. If you aren’t able to do the homeschooling yourself on such a rigid schedule, there are options. I have a feeling in the near future the government will crack down on this too in order to force kids into public school.

I am fed up with atheist activists. It is okay to not believe in any god. It is NOT okay for them to demand that they be shielded from any reference to it wherever they go, lest their eyes be burned or ears fall off. Make no mistake, the number one target of atheists in America is Christianity, you won’t hear too many of them fighting against any other religion. I wonder if they realize that if they are successful in wiping out Christianity, that they will have no one on their side when they try to fight Islam. Hmmmm. Christians in general have no issue with atheists, but Islam will.

You have to have something against Chuck Schulz (Charlie Brown’s creator who was after all created by God himself). Whats that make you? I am freethinking you’re a hater? Everyone knows who Chuck Schulz is and Peanuts and Charlie Brown and still love them. How about yourself? Anyone ever heard of you until today with your stinking thinking free thinking spoil sport intent to ruin children’s good times? Anyone actually love you? Oh, shoot, bet not. It’s time we clear up some confusion: the government has no right to demand anything of any institution based on govt funding. The govt doesn’t fund anything directly–that is money from the taxpayers. The govt, for example, shouldn’t be dictating to public schools what to teach because the schools are owned by the PUBLIC, not the govt. So vouchers in theory shouldn’t mean that the govt gets to dictate anything. As far as the article goes, I love how it’s the “Society of Freethinkers”–unless you’re Christian.

Most everyone has seen a Charlie Brown Christmas. They know what they are getting. There are no surprises here. The aforementioned values is something that most parents want taught to their children.

I am sure that if there was a play put on by an atheist group using rainbows & preaching tolerance or celebrating homosexuality among other things, you would have no problem.how

In the abstract sense atheism is a religion. If you think of st theory, the null set is a subset of every set.

More straight forward, just because atheists may not subscribe to a religion, they still have a set of values. These values need to be checked out by patents and school officials before they send their kids anywhere.

Once again a small but obnoxious segment of society has dictated what the majority gets to see or do. I am not a religious person but this is shameful. I would have had that play and dared this group to do anything.

Take your children out of public schools Christians – it is not worth the warping of their minds. I hope the day comes when the public school teachers have no one left to teach.

As long as private schools cost more than public schools, and as long as their are two parents who either choose to work or are both forced to work, there will always be a public school system. Me and my wife both choose to work. We can afford private school, thankfully, but if we couldn’t then we’d have to send our kids to public school. My wife is a brilliant woman, but she’s not a teacher, so homeschooling is out of the question.

Face it: more and more women CHOOSE to work and don’t want to be stay-at-home moms. This is increasingly the case with the millennial group of voters out there.

‘Face it: more and more women CHOOSE to work and don’t want to be stay-at-home moms’

Perhaps women should make an informed decision BEFORE bringing children into a world where they DO NOT want to to be a mom (parent)…but rather choose their career. Talk about SELFISH…

We need church more then ever. That little excursion may have been the only time some kids ever get to church. We are doomed.

It is the goal of the faithless non-believer to create more self doubting faithless non-believers. This helps him feel better about his complacency and subsequent failure. Sorry leftists…faith is hard, love is hard, and success is hard. There is no tax, no social program, no talking point or pseudo philosophical ranting that’ll change the fact that you are failures. Your failure will just take a few years to come to light and history won’t be kind.

Church SHOULD be houses of worship. Not theatres. As ‘nice’ as this movie might be, it has no place in a house of God that should be for the honour and praise of Jesus Christ alone.

It’s kind of funny it took some atheists to force this church into doing what they should have done in the first place … NOT show the film in their building.

To clarify, I should add that it is still wrong for a church to have its agenda controlled by any outside group, government or society. It is Christ’s kingdom.

Actually, they are houses of worship and ALWAYS of fellowship. That is all that they were doing, just another form of fellowship. I would assume that you would agree that fellowship is another form of worship.

I agree, Charlie Browns Christmas Story is a sweet and loving story. I feel sorry for the kids, having some Atheists ruining it for them. Arkansas Society of Free Thinkers? I don’t think they THINK very well, in fact what they are doing to little children is disgraceful. Psalm 14 describes them very well; they should read it and then look in the mirror.

Christians are hateful and vile people. They converted themselves into greedy pseudo-jews that believe they have some “chosen” right to rule this country and ostracize people who simply don’t subscribe to theocracy, monarchy, or the arrogance of the religious to believe they speak for “god”.

This is so sad! I can’t believe the Church backed down. There is no “separation of Church and State”; there is a “Congress shall make no law establishing a religion”. That said, it seem that the government is establishing athesim as a religion with all this anti-Christian stuff. I literally caught my breath when the New Testament was found in the sleeping mat in Agenda 21. It *is* happening.

      Yes, Sir!

CHRISTIANS MUST STAND for our GOD, our faith in HIM. Every time one of us caves in, we weaken the link to one another.

PRAY FOR COURAGE, CHRISTIANS, for us worldwide.

Thank YOU, FATHER GOD, for persecution, for it is in these times, we draw nearer, closer and deeper into YOU. Thank YOU for the enemy and for uncovering him in all his duplicitous forms so that we see him clearly and know not to go there. Thank YOU, LORD. In JESUS’ SWEET AND MIGHTY name, we do pray and we do stand.

      GRANDMA…

“CHRISTIANS MUST STAND for our GOD”..

I agree completely. But if you think this situation is about standing for God, then you only serve to reinforce the outrage of the Atheist aggressors.

If the intent of this field trip was to evangelize children, then it’s cancellation is appropriate.

If this trip was about enjoying and celebrating local actors performing a traditional Christmas production and exposing the kids to art and culture, then it’s cancellation is a ridiculous abomination.

Christmas is a FEDERAL HOLIDAY. Defend public Christmas productions from a Constitutional standpoint. You will gain nothing defending them with theological motivations.

      1. All the kids at the school may not have Christian.
      2. Regardless of what the church would or would not do the school might have canceled the event.
      3. Some atheist, hindu or other parents might not have had a problem with this play. We don’t know if any parents complained& for what reasons. Some parent may have contacted the atheist activists. We don’t know.
      4. The church can offer this same play after school, on Saturday or on Sunday afternoon. People like free entertainment & If they acting is well done, parents might bring their kids individually. You might have large audiences this way. It would absolutely FROST the activists, but there would be not one thing they could do except to put on rival entertainment with a message or “ACT UP”.
