Egyptian Women Begin to Fight Back Against Rampant Sexual Assault — And Who Do They Think Is Behind It?

The grassroots Egyptian media organization Mosireen has put together a video on how Egyptian women are are starting to fight back against sexual assault– and it contains some noteworthy information on who they think the perpetrators are.
Most Americans were introduced to the horrors of how women can be treated in Egypt– particularly the iconic Tahrir Square– after CBS reporter Lara Logan was viciously attacked while reporting on the so-called “Arab Spring.” A number of foreign reporters have been assaulted since, and not surprisingly, Egyptian women find themselves targeted just as often.
“Why shouldn’t women go out to Tahrir?” an Egyptian girl says as the video opens. “It’s their right! This is their country! The sexual assaults are part of the reason they’re going out to the square in the first place.”
The clip then goes over the background of how women are treated– including a horrifying aerial image of a jostling mob seemingly attempting to surround a girl– before a field doctor from a Tahrir clinic is interviewed.
He says:
“Most of the time they form a long chain moving together, their hands on each other’s backs like a train…They push into the crowds of protesters and they pick particular people – foreigners or Egyptians – they start surrounding them, and then the assault starts…”
The video cuts back to the animated Egyptian girl from the beginning of the video:
“They attacked the girls. They ripped off their clothes and sexually assaulted them. I’m so disgusted, I feel a huge sense of guilt because we weren’t able to get to anyone. I’m trying to help in any way I can.”

A jostling crowd seemingly tries, in a coordinated manner, to surround someone. (Photo via Mosireen)
A second girl then explains how, though sexual assault has always been a problem, it has markedly increased with the recent wave of unrest against Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.
The attacks “took place in a very organized way,” she states evenly, “which makes us suspect that someone is behind these assaults.”
In her opinion, which is seconded by the Egyptian field doctor, it is likely that someone is orchestrating the attacks to make the protesters look like “human trash who assault women.” The obvious implication would be that President Morsi’s regime is behind it, though both stop short of explicitly calling out the man who recently gave himself absolute power.
But over the weekend, the Daily Mail reported on similar allegations that Morsi is “paying gangs to go out and rape women and beat men protesting in Egypt.” At the very least, the current regime is wildly failing at keeping the streets safe.
A young man then appears to explain how he and others have begun rescue groups for girls in need. Their efforts are still in the extremely fundamental stages, but they have to start somewhere:
“The most important step in preventing an attempted assault is to first reach the girl…You have to do it calmly and without making any violent moves until you’ve reached her. Try to stay calm, try not to shout, try as much as possible to calm her down and secure her because she’ll be panicking and afraid of everyone around her.”

Posted on December 5, 2012 at 8:03pmEvil succeeds when good people are afraid. Since George W left office, we have been the culture of appeasement where Hilary tries to buy off tyrants by making them rich tyrants.
The Middle East is rushing back the corrupt 5th century and the U.S. government is showing them the way. This Administration does not care about Arab women getting raped, or murdered. Hell, Laura Logan was gang raped by Islamic perverts and the PC crowd converted it to a sexual assault with snide comments about it being faked to make her more famous.
Who is responsible? Liberals are responsible.

I heard our Sewer Rat-in-Chief say just the other day that everythinbg’s good in the Middle East and those Al Qaeda boys are decimated. If Barry Soetoro says it, it must be true since Al Sharpton will back him up.
Forget Hillbilly Hillary and John “I served in Viet Nam” Kerry, I say make Al Sharpton Secretary of State. That should buy us some time around the world as foreign dignitaries, friend and foe alike, try to figure out what the hell it is he’s saying!

Posted on December 6, 2012 at 12:02pmI guess since Muslim women get stoned for being raped, that makes them easy targets. Probably not many women are going to report abuse when they know they’re the ones who will be punished.

Posted on December 5, 2012 at 8:36pmPerhaps you’re right, Thehalfrican. I’m proud Oklahomans are still permitted to own & carry weapons. Since I live in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area where the current 2012 total of homicides (as of yesterday) was 100, according to KTOK 1000 AM. Oklahoma City is one of 10 U.S. cities ranked in the Top Ten list of major metropolitan areas having the highest number of homicides thus far in 2012.
As for the entire state of Oklahoma, if 2012′s year-end crime statistics run as much or more than those of 2011 (and they are on track to do just that), there will have been at least 202 forcible rapes, 69 acts of forcible sodomy, 33 sexual assaults with an object, 610 incidents of forcible fondling, 67 cases of statutory rape, 8 cases of incest, and more (much more) that you can check out on OKSBI’s website.
Sexual assault is despicable, whether committed against one man/woman/child, or against twenty. I feel awful for women in countries where civil and Sharia laws actually cast a blanket of protection over males who sexually misuse women/children – whether by rape or other sexually-related atrocities.
I will pray and I will carry!

Soon the women who once lived under a somewhat moderate middle eastern country will find themselves wrapped in a burka.

Posted on December 5, 2012 at 7:33pmBy Sharia law all these young girls can be raped . In the picture all are not in Burkas and that little see through face covering won’t hack it. This causes men to lust after them and the only way they can prove rape is to have 4 male escorts that will testify in court. What Morsi is trying to do is get the women to follow the law with a full Burka with only eyes showing and only speak when spoken to by a male. I can’t wait for when it becomes law here and the women libbers start squaking about the tents they have to wear and have to shut up untill spoken to by a male.

Posted on December 5, 2012 at 7:18pmEgypt is famous for a razor sharp, curved, singled-edged knife with a little notch in it. I can’t recall it’s name but it was designed to plunge upward into the groin or belly of an opponent.
Once firmly seated it’s flat curved design is designed to be easily withdrawn…of course there is that itty bitty notch that tends to grab pretty important stuff as it’s being pull out.
It makes a helluv’ a mess. I think arming all Egyptian women with this instrument would be honoring Egyptian culture, and making these pathetic pansy rapists think twice. These cute little choo-choo trains won’t be going anywhere after the first few cars are turned into screaming bloody nightmares clutching a handful of their own slippery intestines.

Posted on December 5, 2012 at 7:13pmIf these women don’t win their battle for fair treatment soon, they are doomed. Those in charge who wish to impose their version of Islamic law on Egypt will not settle for rape in a public square. They will arrest any woman who speaks out, have women beaten for appearing without male escorts, and otherwise “Taliban” Egypt as that group has done to Afghanistan. The flame of freedom is flickering dangerously, and another piece of the world is about to go dark.

Posted on December 5, 2012 at 7:47pmThe Muslim Brotherhood members are a mixture of three different sects of Islam, the most radical of them the Sufirists make the Taliban and Al Queda look saintly.
These attacks by the extremists and the Brotherhood on the women is designed to be a reign of subjugation by intimidation, force and of terror. Soon enough the raping of the women will not be enough for the radicals and extremists, they will begin the systematic murder of all women and girls who refuse to comply fully and absolutely with Sharia.
Those who elected Obama need to take notice, elections do have consequences, and this will be the fate for America under Obama.

Posted on December 5, 2012 at 7:12pmElections have consequences, and Egyptians were fooled into supporting the muslim brotherhood takeover of their country, so, they have themselves to blame for being uninformed and easily duped.
But, also, Egyptians should look to obama for illegally using billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars to help topple Mubarak and position Morsi and the muslim brotherhood in such a way as to purposely deceive them people into believing that this was the “democracy” that they had longed for.
Yes – of course Morsi and the muslim brotherhood are behind these attacks, but, they have the full support and (illegal) financial backing of obama.

Posted on December 5, 2012 at 7:09pmSo where are Obummer and the UN thugs on this? They don’t seem to mind taking rights away, all the while allowing rights violations to go unchecked. Isn’t it interesting how all the things the UN at UNEP.org claim are harming the environment are the same things they themselves propagate? Here’s an example; they talk about war displacing resources, so to counter they have the US run guns into the affected areas, only for the bad guys with guns already to procure the arms. Same can be said about the food to the starving folk. The UN has no intention of curing the Worlds Woes, only to control the World as a whole!!!!
