BOSTON (AP) — They say no man is an island, but Michael Richard Smith has been creating his own floating homes in Boston Harbor.
The Coast Guard and Boston police are keeping an eye on the unconventional camper who has been tying his canoe to small offshore docks in the city’s inner harbor and pitching his tent to sleep at night.
The 49-year-old Maine native said Tuesday he’s been paddling the waters of metro Boston since October with all his possessions aboard a 14-foot, 40-year-old aluminum canoe he patches with duct tape when necessary.
Smith detests the term “homeless” and describes himself as just another “fellow citizen.”
He said he feels most secure when he sleeps out in the harbor, and lists his biggest worries as the wakes of fast ferries and drunken boaters.

“It’s about as safe as I could be,” said Smith, who’s also camped on at least one inner harbor island. “Anybody who would want to hurt me or take my things, they have to have a boat. And boat people stick together.”
The Coast Guard spotted Smith a few days ago, and said while the mariner has been moving around, he hasn’t moored anyplace where he’s a threat to security or his own safety.
“What it really seems like is he’s trying to figure out whether it’s feasible to live out there,” Coast Guard Lt. Joe Klinker said Tuesday.
The Coast Guard official said the agency would take action if Smith entered a security zone, but that he has stuck to recreational areas.
“It’s not a major concern for the Coast Guard right now,” Klinker said. “… A lot of people who don’t have a place, live by the water. But on the water is unique.”
On Monday night, Smith tied up and slept on a floating dock about 100 yards offshore from the New England Aquarium.

Boston Police Department’s Harbor Unit has offered him city services, but he declined, police spokeswoman Cheryl Fiandaca said Tuesday. She said Smith did accept a new life vest with reflectors and a whistle from police.
Police told Smith not to operate his canoe at night, because it doesn’t have lights. And while police said they’ll continue to check on his safety, like the Coast Guard, they said Smith doesn’t appear to be breaking any laws.
Smith said he spent about a year camping further north in Massachusetts before his sister helped him transport his canoe to Boston’s Seaport District. Once there, he put the vessel he named “Alice Williams” in the water behind the InterContinental Hotel, the same neighborhood where Red Sox baseball team owner John Henry has been known to dock his 164-foot yacht “Iroquois.”
The name of Smith’s canoe is a tribute to the family of Roger Williams, the founder of Rhode Island whom the mariner admires for his support of First Amendment freedoms. He used the name of Williams’ mother, because he said women need more recognition.
Smith said he’s spent years trying to advocate for better public schools, and has passed on a newsletter he’s written on the topic to politicians, including Boston Mayor Thomas Menino. The canoe owner said he thinks about public policy as he’s paddling through the harbor and that living on the water has taught him balance, patience and fortitude.

Smith is a wiry, mustachioed man with long brown hair who tucks a silk pink rose into the brim of his explorer hat. He dresses in layers to stay warm, but also doesn’t seem to mind that colder weather will be coming as winter arrives.
Smith plans to sleep out in Boston Harbor all winter and prefers to concentrate on the beauty of his surroundings rather than the bareness of his accommodations.
Before sunup Tuesday, Smith saw a shooting star skitter across the New England sky and said later he made a wish meant for all people, no matter where they bunk at night.
“I wished self-esteem for all of us,” he said.

Where does he relieve himself? Why doesn’t he “paddle” to more hospitable climes? Why should the taxpayer have to put up with someone squatting every night?
I hope his boat sinks.

Dec. 5, 2012 at 1:04pmThis is to Red Meat. Red, that was a pin-head reply. The man is not using your tax dollars sitting in a boat in the middle of the harbor, and if he takes a crap there the only one bothered is the fish beneath him, if any of them can even survive the oil/gasoline/dead animal/pollution that’s already there. He looks to be much cleaner than your mother’s basement (where you obviously live).
A douche-bag would be someone who lives off of people. This man seems to be living a low impact life, in a safe and responsible way. You should remember that people who point and pass judgement on other folks are usually pointing their own faults out as well.

If the CG has to keep an eye on him and clean up after him, he is a taxpayer liability. If he ties up overnight at someones dock or mooring, that’s trespassing. Which is illegal.
If Joe Hippy guy wants to live a life on the water and away from others, why doesn’t he paddle that scow to Haiti. They have plenty of places to dock and continue his vagrancy.

Dec. 5, 2012 at 8:24pmJust a couple thoughts here. First, go somewhere warm. Do the words “freeze to death” mean anything to you? Second, if you can afford it, find an old sailboat to live on. You can find usable boats for very little money, and if you find one like mine, you’ll have a portapottie, a stove to cook on, a comfortable bed, and protection from the weather. The bays and backwaters here in Florida are full of boats like that, with people living on them like you do. You’d be right at home in Key West. I saw a bay there between Key West and Stock Island that has a whole community of “boat people”.

Your an azzhated turd. This guy is probably the most responsible citizen in Boston. A true American and a survivor. He is smart to live in his canoe, rather than be homeless on the streets. If he gets to cold, I am sure he would paddle to warmer climates, but he seems to be doing fine where he is. He is a free man.

Jan. 28, 2013 at 12:43amNo, he is not wiser than the average fella. The guy’s actual name is Michael Robert Smith, and the National Park here in Boston has had dealing with him in the past. He attempts to provoke rangers into arresting / detaining him, swears at them, and dances around half naked on Park property, harassing visitors.
He was a nuisance in North Carolina a few years ago, threatening female visitors along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
So yeah, Red Meat is actually right. This guy is a crazy douchebag. Anyone who threatens women for no legitimate reason (the claimed reason was that they refused to give him a ride) is an asshat, by which I mean they are as useless as a hat you would wear on your ass.

Dec. 5, 2012 at 12:01pmThis is not a new thing. The size of the boat with no shelter is odd. The first nor’easter he is toast.
I know a guy around here that keeps a small house boat anchored out in the TN river/lake.
He pulls into the docks at the marina about once a month for gas and a run to town.
He pays a small dumping fee to pump the sump. And fill his water tank for that use.
He takes his rubber raft to the state park for use of the bath house and or just walk the trails.
However dec-feb he docks at the marina in a paid slip. So he can hook up to all utilities for the cold winter. Being retired he has little income. But he has almost no over head. Being off the grid has it’s appeal.

Dec. 5, 2012 at 11:17amGood for Smitty he has moved uptown, he use to live in a big ol oak tree in Maine but it became very difficult for him to wash the nettlesome skid marks off his undies with acorns and rain water. Now he just flips em over the side of his silver yacht in the Boston harbor and off he goes. When asked by a reporter if he is ashamed of doing his laundry like that Smitty responded, “Hell thats how they did it in the Revolutionary times.”

Dec. 5, 2012 at 10:53amHe has Maritime rights. He is a vessel in navigation. He is protected by federal law. However, they will haunt him until he gives up, because, as someone else here said, “He is off the grid…”
I lived on the hook for 5 years, however a much better suited vessel for such things, and was continually being harassed. Although I was protected by federal statute, the local gendarmes try to dog the crap out you. Many times because, the local waterfront property owners objected to boats at anchor because they were not paying property taxes like they were. Also, they claimed they had the right to control their waterfront view.
We are continually gnawing at liberty and our self reliance to central government control. Don’t worry…. it’ll get worse.

I wonder how much money this guy would make if he started trapping fur in the area? I bet he would be the only fur trapper in the area. I did a little trapping as a kid (but nobody like peta around). He and his loaded canoe brought back some good American memories.

The problem is when he starts to scare people and yell to people that he wants to fight them, at that point live and let live goes out the window and he needs to be reminded that we’re all friends and there is no reason to threaten the visitors or law enforcement. As far as im concerned as long as he is willing to let people enjoy themselves without having to feel unsafe then he cant do whatever he wants.

How a person decides to live their life is none of your, or anyone else’s, business and certainly doesn’t constitute a problem. The man is free, let him be.
