William Binney, a whistleblower at the National Security Agency (NSA), had his life turned upside down after revealing to the public just how much information the United States government is gathering on its citizens. He says the most recent wave began after September 11, 2001, but that it has only accelerated in recent years.
A 32-year veteran of the agency, Binney had the title of senior technical director and was considered one of the foremost mathematicians and code breakers in the business, according to a documentary featured in the New York Times. He quit, however, after the NSA started using programs it had developed to spy on foreign governments, to spy on Americans.
He has not been silent since his resignation, and is warning Americans from every platform he can find. He recently gave a chilling interview to Russia Today, and then spoke with TheBlaze TV.
With Russia Today, Binney reiterated how the government is collecting information on everyone, not just national security risks and suspected national security risks. Then, if you become a target “for whatever reason,” he explained, ” the government can go in– or the FBI, or other agencies of the government– they can go into their database, pull all that data collected.”
And with hundreds of thousands of pages of regulations these days, you are doing something wrong.
Here is a partial transcript from the interview:
RT: You blew the whistle on the agency when George W. Bush was the president. With President Obama in office, in your opinion, has anything changed at the agency, in the surveillance program? In what direction is this administration moving?
WB: The change is it’s getting worse. They are doing more. He is supporting the building of the Bluffdale facility [in Utah], which is over two billion dollars they are spending on storage room for data. That means that they are collecting a lot more now and need more storage for it…
[...]
RT: It seems that the public is divided between those who think that the government surveillance program violates their civil liberties, and those who say, ‘I’ve nothing to hide. So, why should I care?’ What do you say to those who think that it shouldn’t concern them?
WB: The problem is if they think they are not doing anything that’s wrong, they don’t get to define that. The central government does, the central government defines what is right and wrong and whether or not they target you. So, it’s not up to the individuals. Even if they think they aren’t doing something wrong, if their position on something is against what the administration has, then they could easily become a target.
RT: Tell me about the most outrageous thing that you came across during your work at the NSA.
WB: The violations of the Constitution and any number of laws that existed at the time. That was the part that I could not be associated with. That’s why I left. They were building social networks on who is communicating and with whom inside this country. So that the entire social network of everybody, of every US citizen was being compiled over time. So, they are taking from one company alone roughly 320 million records a day. That’s probably accumulated probably close to 20 trillion over the years. [Emphasis added]
Here is the video, via Russia Today, for more:
When Binney appeared on TheBlaze TV on Tuesday, co-host Pat Gray asked whether he had any fear for his safety, being one of the few people who has had access to the top levels of the NSA to go public with the information. There are several others, but Binney says he believes he is just doing his duty as an American.
“I feel I’m doing the job that a citizen is supposed to do, standing up for the Constitution and the rights of the people,” he said humbly.
Binney proceeded to explain the transformation he witnessed within the NSA– how the program would go from graphing the social networks of potential terrorists, to compiling such graphs on everyone.
At first, he tried to change the organization from the inside:
“I was working with several others [within] the NSA who were with me in this, trying to get the government to address the unconstitutional and illegal activity that they were doing… but we were basically totally unsuccessful in getting them to even recognize that they should change their ways and start doing things legally, out in the open, in a constitutionally acceptable way.”
Binney then discussed the recent resignation of Gen. David Petraeus over an extra-marital affair, and how his private communications were intercepted.
“As far as the actual government goes, [adultery] is not a high crime and misdemeanor here,” co-host Stu Burguiere weighed in. “It’s sort of secondary, and they’ll go to that extent to out somebody who may have had a political issue. That’s frightening.”
Combine that with the government’s friendly relationship with Google (and Google’s work to be able to predict your future actions), the history of big government, and this government’s willingness to declare its political opponents enemies and terrorists, and it would be foolish not to be concerned about the course we’re on.

Dec. 5, 2012 at 10:11amThe fact that something hasn’t already happened indicates nothing probably will happen. The problem is that the “Big Brothers” of America actually think they are patriots, doing a job for the good of the country. They are comfortable in their GS15 positions and do what they are told. The GS above 17+ run the show and know they don’t have to play by the rules. They are the communist party of the USSR in the Cold War or the upper class in North Korea or Cuba or Venezula. They don’t rock the boat because they have no courage or conviction and really don’t care about the US and it’s Constitution. They have their bunkers and safehouses and bodyguards and the bodyguards don’t care because they are with the guys who will allow them to live. I am truly ashamed of the people who have the power and control in America. They have horribly failed their responsibilities because of power and greed. The only thing that keeps me going is knowing it will eventually fail. It has always failed throughout history and this time it will fail also. It always de-evolves into chaos and anarchy as it did with the Greeks, Romans, Persians and now the United States. The decision is do you sit and wait, stir up crap or accept the inevitable.

Dec. 5, 2012 at 11:20amMr.Binney looks familiar to me as someone who has an agenda.
I view anything coming from Rasputin Today (RT) with a great deal of caution and skepticism.
The new soviet union same as the old, has a world famous reputation for installing 5th column helpers in foreign lands who propagate their own agendas of fact and fiction.
Mr.Binney is possibly an old comrade!

Started under Bush II???
Better try again. It started, if a starting point can even be defined, under the J. Edgar Hoover-led FBI.
It has grown steadily over the decades through periods of both Democrat and Republican administrations.
Just an FYI, most data encryption schemes can be cracked by modern cutting-edge techniques used by the NSA. You know one of the encoding/encryption techniques they have the most trouble deciphering? The old “one-time pad” style codes, as long as the “one-time” part is followed, as code-breaking requires having a large enough sample to analyze for repeated patterns.

1871 – Due to fact that we were still divided after the civil war, the gov’t created a Corporation called the U.S. Government and governed from the Corp. Headquarters – D.C.

They create the Federal Reserve Private Bank, The Federal Reserve Act is passed.
Federal Income Tax Begins. The IRS and FBI are Established.
1933 – Corp U.S. Breaches contract by declarin bankuptcy and Amercia must surrender collateral to the Private Bank.
Gold Reserves go first. It’s Not enough.
Citiens are declared enemes and ordered to turn in their gold bullion and coin. It was not enough to absolve the debt.
So they had to pledge America’s LAND, Gov’t Branches and PEOPLE as COLLATERAL !!!

Birth Certificates become law in all states in 1933.
Social Security is established in 1936. This is the Private Bank’s BOND on YOU !!!!!

It was a power grab back in 2001 that they were looking for. The government had been hoping for some big attack like that for a long time prior to 2001. They are all just men and women. Human beings. They are not 7 feet tall and made out of carbon fiber and titanium. They can be dropped just like the finest of heros have been in the past. Men better than they. Sure, there will have some ambitious boot lickers that will side with goons. There always has been. Many will be high ranking military officers. But when the SHTF, the guys that control the heavy hardware for the side of good will outnumber those traitors that side with the tyrants. Oh, there will be blood all over the place and both good and bad will suffer-wifes, sons and daughters included, on both sides. But, in the end they put their pants on one leg at a time and have to wipe their asses just like all of us. The house WILL be cleaned. And, although some lucky ones that caused this mess and attempted to enslave us will escape, most of them will be caught and horrible things will happen them. Change may take a while and it may never happen but life is short and I refuse to let this break my spirit, faith or my happiness.

Dec. 5, 2012 at 9:59amYou neocons are hysterical. You pare any difference of opinion in fake paradigm of republican/democrat. I voted 3rd party. Get it right. So funny how you cue the crocodile tears of tyranny when a democrat beats a republican candidate who ran on the exact platform. Admit that you want this police state because you love Imaginary jihadists breaking into your home. Where were you when ron Paul was campaigning against this? Oh yeah, shilling for israel-first policies of…..rebuilding this police state. Now go back to sleep.

Dec. 5, 2012 at 10:05amjudging by your name I’d say you love fairytales like leprechauns. Why is it that every major war since 1898 always has suspiciousness surrounding attacks against American “interests?” Maybe because military industrialists let it happen because it would make for an awfully good raisin d’être? I know its really fun to be afraid but I’m sick to death of paying for your eschatological entertainment.

So your 3rd party vote was for Paul/Johnson; and it enabled 0 to remain in power, while some thought an actual bidness man would stave off the coming fun, and you have zero responsibility when you knew that Paul/Johnson/Barr didn’t/wouldn’t get .002 % of the vote??? So you peed up your leg, and now it’s raining? What? The GOP does seem dead in many ways, but why should sane people align with those who purposely enabled these cretins to maintain any power? R&R were many things-but not frickin marxists. I don’t get it. You didn’t get your way, so we should all share the exact same fiasco, to prove some point. That sucks. You guys have done zero but maybe excelerate the train wreck. Maybe that is good, lets get it over with, but as a real small percentage of what remains on the decent right, please excuse some of us if we don’t ax for your opinion for quite a while.

I voted for Goode even though I wanted paul, but it wouldn’t have even counted as a vote. Johnson got 1%. That was enough to stick a dagger in the republican vampire. You now see the fruits of that now with boehner exposing himself. This is the end my friend.

Dec. 5, 2012 at 9:07amSee!? What I said again about them tracking us? They don’t give a damn about what we think, or what we want. They’ve been keeping folk under surveillance the entire time on the net, regardless of us going online to participate in those White House surveys or not!. They don’t trust anyone! Especially those of us that were formerly in the military, and even more so if we have the kind of training that they perceive as “a danger to officials well being”.
Our threat to National Security in this country, is already in power for a second time. Anything they say or do from this moment on has to be heavily scrutinized from beginning to end. You want this country back, you have to fight tooth and nail for it. And John Boenher has to GO! We need real leadership, one with an Iron will and blood and willing to go at it with the Liberals in that mud pit they’re standing in the middle of. You have to play on their terms, you better get your boots and absolutely worse clothes on to get your message across. The media is implicated in everything they do. You can’t count on them for crap! Even Romney knew that much. What are they going to do to save this country from this death march!? They’ve cheered this crap on! Just like they did back in the 1920′s!
The best thing for Conservatives to do is attack them from the local level, to the point, they can no longer stand still. They want division among the people, let’s serve just that to them, ice cold!

Dec. 5, 2012 at 9:46amYou really need to keep up Troll, old bean. This is not a new topic and it’s certainly not restricted to Beck. In fact, Beck is a late comer to the game in my opinion. Any level of involvement with the ACLU and the EFF would show that this is a long discussed trend.
Unfortunately you come here to sneer and snicker and are doing yourself a huge disservice in not paying attention to the topics of the articles. Some are fluff, but electronic surveillance is a pretty “cross party” topic that one would hope we could all have a reasonable amount of concern about. But hey, you’re just here to call names and belittle, what does it matter to you, right hoss?

Dec. 5, 2012 at 8:57amIt’s a self placed leash however. They don’t send out guys in trench coats and sun glasses to watch you. They count on you being on social media, to text, to use your cell phone, and to be on the internet, in order to track you.
There’s always some tracking overhead on a person, but it’s not difficult at all to minimize that overhead. Leave the cell phone/texter at home. Use cash to buy your daily needs. Stay off the internet for serious or sensitive discussions/topics. That leaves “them” with knowing what your bills are and how much you withdraw out of the ATM, which if you think about it, isn’t a hell of a lot compared to what most folks give away for free.
This state of affairs is utterly wrong, and we can all rail about it. End of the day though, what can be done (serious question)? I’m open to suggestions.

That would require active (as in human) interfacing. What’s being discussed is automated/semi-automated wide scale tracking, a vast majority of it self-inflicted by the individual being tracked. If a human being has to get involved to monitor me personally then you can bet I won’t be outside on a creek bank presenting a nice large target of opportunity for “stray shots” that may fly by my head, if you catch my drift.
