GOP Sen. Jim DeMint to Resign from Senate in January to Head Conservative Think Tank

South Carolina Republican Sen. Jim DeMint abruptly announced Thursday plans to resign his Senate seat and head the conservative Washington think tank The Heritage Foundation.

DeMint, a Tea Party leader, told the Wall Street Journal he will replace Ed Feulner as president of Heritage in early January. His departure will open up a spot for South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) to pick a replacement, who will then run in a special election in 2014, the Journal reported. South Carolina’s other senator, Republican Lindsey Graham, will also be defending his seat that year.

“It’s been an honor to serve the people of South Carolina in United States Senate for the past eight years, but now it’s time for me to pass the torch to someone else and take on a new role in the fight for America’s future,” DeMint said in a statement.

“I’m leaving the Senate now, but I’m not leaving the fight. I’ve decided to join The Heritage Foundation at a time when the conservative movement needs strong leadership in the battle of ideas. No organization is better equipped to lead this fight and I believe my experience in public office as well as in the private sector as a business owner will help Heritage become even more effective in the years to come,” he said.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told Politico DeMint informed him of his decision Thursday morning.

“We’re sorry to see Jim go. He’s had a distinguished career,” McConnell said. “My wife [Elaine Chao] is a distinguished fellow at The Heritage Foundation. She’ll be reporting to him.”

DeMint easily won re-election in 2010. He had previously announced he would not seek a third term in 2016. The winner of 2014′s special contest will only serve out the remainder of DeMint’s term — not a full six years — before facing election again.

South Carolina newspaper The State reported speculation on possible replacements for DeMint quickly turned to Rep. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), also a Tea Party favorite and the only black Republican in the House. Other possibilities are GOP Reps. Mick Mulvaney and Trey Gowdy or Haley herself.

Haley told the newspaper DeMint has been an excellent leader for South Carolina and the national conservative movement as a whole.

“His voice for freedom and limited government has been a true inspiration. On a personal level, I value Jim’s leadership and friendship. Our state’s loss is the Heritage Foundation’s gain,” she said.

DeMint told the Journal he was joining Heritage because of a need to more effectively communicate conservative principles with the public.

“This is an urgent time,” he said, adding that the 2012 election showed Republicans “were not able to communicate conservative ideas that win elections.”

The Republican Party has destroyed their presence in the Senate. There is no power there for them anymore. It is just as the Republican establishment wants it. They don’t have to work anymore and have attained all their personal positions with pay for life without lifting a finger. They are as lazy as the welfare cheats bleeding us dry. De Mint knows this. He also knows the only hope for freedom in America is now with the Tea Party and their efforts to field candidates to take the Senate and the House with enough strength to stop Obama and his Marxist army.

  Whatever you do don’t study history before making a ridiculous statement. I remember when they said the GOP was dead in 2008 and in 2010 the House went back to the GOP and if the better candidates were nominated would have taken the Senate as well. Theodore Roosevelt was the first progressive President so you are off by about 125 years. The Demoncrats will lose control of the Senate in 2014 so I wouldn’t crow too loud about the death of the GOP!

  I think this was about money myself. Since when is being in a position of power and having a vote on bills less important than a “think-tank” where we sit around thinking of ideas to implement. In my world doing always trumps thinking about doing.
  
  My only other thought is that he will take the pay increase to use the money and free time, so he can make a run at the Presidency in 2016. That is my guess.
  
  I typically dont feed trolls, but if certain people think that just because 51% vs 49% of VOTERS, not the entire nation, voted for Obama is some how a signal of the end, then they really are clueless.
  
  The real test will be in 2016 when there is no more money to print to buy elections, when welfare is cut off, when inflation is through the roof. Thats when you are going to see the 51% moochers turn like rabid dogs on their handout politicians.

  Foxhole, first Switzerland isn’t a good example for progressivism considering that they have the lowest tax burden of all developed countries. Second, even with progressive governments like Germany, their wealth is backed up by productive capital where they in turn tax that capital and “invest” it into developing “life saving medicine, exploring the galaxies, and bringing the rest of the world into the 21st century”. Unfortunately we don’t produce anything anymore. Look at our trade deficits. Where are you going to get the money to pay for these things? If you confiscated most of the wealth of the 1% and “invested” back into the economy what you’ll see is higher prices. Why? Because the most of the wealth floating around in the coffers of the 1% is not generated from productive capital but from easy access to credit and the inflationary monetary policy of the Federal Reserve system. The reason we were able to “invest” in our country back in the 1940s and 50s is because most of the infrastructure in Europe and Asia was destroyed from World War II and we had a strong manufacturing base where we were paying the highest salaries in the world while at the same time producing the least expensive products.

  America has only been a progressive country in the manner in which Progressives (ie Socialist/Marxist/Liberation Theology nutjobs) use the word for the last 106 years…since Teddy Roosevelt fell in love with Lenin and the Fabian Socialists in Britain. It has pretty much been a 100 year campaign to bring us where we are today just like the 13 colonies took nearly 100 years to reach their first breaking point..
  
  Good thing we learned from that…it only took 25% of the population believing in the fight and only about 2% actually fighting to win the war….and about 8 years…now there were nationalists and federalists but regardless NONE of the Founders or any American up to the time of the 1880′s would have EVERY dreamed up the CRAP the Progressives have spilled onto the USA over the last 100 years…
  
  so…go ahead..put your head where the sun don’t shine and think you smell roses in your Statist Utopia….we only need 25% believing and 2% fighting (non violently of course..for now…) and 8 years to fix the problem…oh…and we have a lot more than 2% willing to do the fighting this time around….

Not included in this article is this VERY relevant information:
“U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint said today he will replace Ed Feulner as president of the Heritage Foundation, and leave the Senate in January… Feulner had total compensation of $1,098,612 in 2010, according to Heritage Foundation’s Form 990. DeMint’s pay as U.S. Senator has been $174,000 since 2009, with Senate pay set at $174,000 for 2013.”

Call my cynical, but I don’t think DeMint is doing this out of the goodness of his heart or to better promote conservative issues. He sounds like the next Dick Armey to me.

  If he were me, and I was really interested in enacting legal change I would do so in my elected position instead of bailing on my constituents and my country. I have no problem with anyone leaving one position for another (especially not for more money); but I will take a darn close look when there’s claims that they did so “for the good of the country/party/cause”… and completely ignore that he’ll be making about six times his current annual pay.
  
  Good for DeMint for moving into an easier, more well-paid and less scrutinized position; bad for the country to lose another fiscally conservative Congressman and for him to leave the people who voted him into office in the lurch.

Good… I hope one of those leadership role is to OPENLY denounce the slick side bigot mentality that is adding a distasteful flavor within the Conservative movement creating a bad smell thats holding back the party from reaching out to everyone that has the same values and would include them fully to contribute to strengthening this country…Rather than criticizing and lecturing, try to demonstrate and show how rugged individualism can reinforce the foundation of this country.

well this could be the start of separating us from them. there has been lots of talk and action about getting the heck out. So, if Mr. DeMint is one of those that will advocate basically dissolving the union and splitting us apart, I would not want to be in the senate either. I mean think, if things were going to be that bad, he would resign and leave the country. just getting out and letting the democrats have free run will make every conservatives life miserable, including his so I cant see standing down unless he doesnt want to be part of the senate and has eyes on something like state nullification, etc… just a hunch

News that DeMint is bailing tells me something is very very wrong. DeMint is one of the very few
trustworthy advocates for We The People. That conservatives are suddenly being stripped of their
seats and resigning is “troubling”.

  We’re out here. We all have jobs and don’t know what we can do to help. Joining groups and giving money doesn’t seem to be working too well. We stay informed and show up to events, we volunteered for Romney and some of our local races as well. But we are the losers and cannot help but think we didn’t do enough. I hope they didn’t cheat to win because I am still in shock that we lost. I think the 3rd branch of Govt should be our next target. (Can I still say target?)

  Summing it up leaves the shell shocked precious little time to heal
  and regroup. Many will never heal. While they say the nation is divided
  and it is, those of us in the so called 48-49% [of the division] are actually
  maybe 35% intact and willing. The rest have either given up, or are
  in the shell shocked state and are ineffective at present. We need to
  get together all over this nation, there are simply too many groups of this and that,
  well meaning, but scattered… We need 1 group together, not all these various groups
  isolated, and of no effect outside of their hub of patriots. We need to join together
  to be effective. Patriots united would be a force to reckon with.

The only real option Republicans have is to wash their hands of the whole mess and let the Democrats own the whole thing. Otherwise it will just be the same old “us vs. them” spin that the majority of Americans buy into.

At the end of the day, there is nothing that can be done. There is no turning back after this last election – we are headed for very, very bad times. Republicans are purging conservatives, running for the left, embracing the policies that will lead to economic and social collapse. At the end of those types of collapse (historically), the mob usually begs for tyranny. We will need someone to offer a different choice – and the people offering that choice sure as hell won’t be the republican party.

  I think DeMint knows he’s not going to be able to accomplish anything of substance as a senator, so you may as well do something that can actually have a positive impact years down the road.

  Congress has become irrelevant. I don’t know if that’s why DeMint is leaving, but I think he realizes it at some level. What’s going on up there now is Theater for the Masses. We’re going over the cliff because Obama wants to go over the cliff. We’re going to legalize illegals because Obama’s wants to. We’re going to do everything he wants to do to destroy the country. If you were DeMint, would you want to sit in the body that will preside over the ultimate demise of the greatest country in all of human history?

  At some point we have to decide we want our America back and not a copy of Europe!! There was a reason that the Pilgrims came, to run from taxation without representation, persecution, and tyrany!! Well it followed us and now we again have to decide whether to be slaves and serfs or to once again fight for our freedom!! Lock and load, arm yourselves, we are just a few months away from Obama and his cronies trying to take that freedom away! Don’t tread on me!!!
