‘Right-to-Work Has got to Go!’ Union Activists Shut Down Mich. Capitol Building, Eight Arrested

Police used pepper spray Thursday to subdue protesters trying to rush the Michigan state Senate after Gov. Rick Snyder and other Republican leaders announced they would press for quick approval of right-to-work legislation limiting union powers.

“When several of the individuals rushed the troopers, they used chemical munitions to disperse the crowd,” said Michigan State Police Inspector Gene Adamczyk. “It would be a lot worse if someone gets hurt and I failed to act.”

A few of the anti-right-to-work protesters engaged in dangerous and threatening behavior. From Michigan Capitol Confidential:

“A union supporter cuts up a sign from supporters of right-to-work laws,” the video’s description reads.

The Capitol was temporarily closed because of concerns for the safety of people and the building. Adamczyk estimated about 2,500 visitors were at the Capitol.

So-called right-to-work measures generally prohibit requiring unions from collecting fees from nonunion employees, which opponents say drains unions of money and weakens their ability to bargain for good wages and benefits. Supporters insist it would boost the economy and job creation. Should it become law in Michigan, it would give the right-to-work movement its strongest foothold yet in the Rust Belt region.

Again, those opposed to the right-to-work legislation weren’t shy about letting its supporters know how they really felt:

“Union members protesting a right-to-work law turn from picketing the capitol to intimidating other citizens supporting a right-to-work law, getting physical and screaming at a man playing a Ronald Reagan speech,” the video’s description reads. “One union member resorts to personally cussing out the man playing the speech.”

After repeatedly insisting during his first two years in office that right-to-work was not on his agenda, Snyder reversed course Thursday, a month after voters defeated a ballot initiative that would have barred such measures under the state constitution.

“This is all about taking care of the hard-working workers in Michigan, being pro-worker and giving them freedom to make choices,” Snyder said during a news conference with House Speaker Jase Bolger and Senate Minority Leader Randy Richardville, both fellow Republicans.

“The goal isn’t to divide Michigan, it is to bring Michigan together,” Snyder said.

But the decision to push forward in the waning days of the Legislature’s lame-duck session infuriated outnumbered Democrats, who resorted to parliamentary maneuvers to slow action but were powerless to block the bills that were expected to be introduced Thursday.

Senate Democratic leader Gretchen Whitmer said she was “livid.”

“These guys have lied to us all along the way,” she said. “They are pushing through the most divisive legislation they could come up with and the dark of night, at the end of a lame-duck session and then they’re going to hightail it out of town. It’s cowardly.”

Hundreds of chanting, whistle-blowing union activists packed the state Capitol rotunda and hallways, chanting slogans such as “Union buster” and “Right-to-work has got to go.”

State officials said two platoons of 32 state police officers have been dispatched to guard the Capitol building, the Lansing State Journal reports.

In order to justify their cushy jobs and salaries, the union bosses in the ’60′s and ’70′s kept pushing higher wages, more benefits, bigger pensions-and priced the American worker right out of the global labor market. It started with auto makers and in domino affect went down the line to steel makers, rubber (tire) workers, and other businesses related to auto production. IMHO

Unions, always trying to intimidate other peoples $$ for their own gain. Infamous quotes from union workers.

All you have to do is show up for work on time and they can’t fire you

I get paid by the hour so I take my time.

It all pays the same whether I work fast or work slow.

Is it time for the 20 min mid-morning break yet?

      Is it lunch time yet?

is it time for the after lunch 20 min break?

Is it time for almost quitting time break?

Its too late to get another project started its almost quitting time…take a break….

I think I’ll take a sick day tomorrow and go fishing.

And #1 quote by union workers…..Hey boss, we’re making $27.00 an hour when we getting a raise?

The Governor finally grew some nads, Unions are the down fall of all states economies, keeps businesses away. Everyone seen what these unions did to GM and Chrysler, almost Ford. Just look what it takes to buy a new car now, dam near a mortgage requirement. I wonder when closing costs will be part of buying a car? There was a day when these unions had a real need to protect the workers, but that day has been gone now for over 30 years plus. The worst part is these Union thugs are too ate up with the unions to know they’re being taken, just look what the Hostess Union did to 18k members! It’s all about the money in the end! There once was a thing called the Union. Everything they got near they did ruin.
They carried signs and cried out “we are superior” yet everyone knew that the products they built were inferior.
They scream we want more or we will walk out the door but they had far less ethics than the street corner whore.
The thugs always were bitchen but were more like the bugs that come out at night in your kitchen.
So to all I say if it’s union built do not pay. You will only get trash and build up their political stash which will ruin our country some day.

I’ll never work for a stinking union. My brother moved to Wisconsin as a teacher & he was forced to join the union & pay their dues if he wanted a job. How crazy is that.

Unions suck funds from their members, and cause rates for everything they touch to skyrocket. We cannot be competitive with the rest of the world when we have to pay all these golden benefits to the unions.

My mother worked for General Motors and the Automakers Union would negotiate raises for the workers then turn around and raise their dues. Giving themselves a raise. Those unions sure did get some great deals for the employees. All to the detriment of the company paying the wages. Why do you think cars are so expensive. To pay for the great benefits.

The average UAW union employee, including retired union members, earns around $70 an hour when benefits are included. They went from taking care of employees to demanding exorbitant, greedy wages and benefits. I can see why these stooges want Michigan to get rid of right-to-work. They have to treat us non-union workers just like everyone else. They can’t force us to pay union dues and then support politicians I don’t support with my money. We have to accept the contracts they negotiate. Good and Bad! We get to choose if we go on strike or not. Only difference is we don’t get paid to strike. Encinom, you have misread the article. We in Michigan shot down the initiative to bar the right to work legislation. We want right to work laws here. The initiative wanted to force more unionization in the state. I have never needed a union to represent me, though I have been forced to pay union dues. When I worked in a union office, I was pulled aside by my union steward and told I needed to slow down and do less or I would set the standard too high for others. That was my first taste of a union, and it was a bad taste that stuck. Every encounter I have had since with a union has been a protection of bad employee practices, not representing the little guy like they try to play it. They chose to go out on strike when they were the highest paid employees in the city. While on strike, union employees caused damage to vehicles and threatened truck drivers with ball bats smashing their windows while driving. This is America, we should be free to choose if we want to belong to an organization or not. Think it through Encinom. How would you like to be forced to pay dues to an organization that you don’t agree with? The people in Michigan voted it down. Watch the video, it is just plain bad manners to act in such a ridiculously rude manner. The visual unfortunately represents the truth of unions…in your face and fighting for all the wrong causes.

ENCINOM And if you were made CEO, you would be such a great guy and want to be paid a few dollars more than the average worker is your “factory”. BS you would want as much money as the other CEOs.

Chromo, the CEO is Costco, pays his employees more than average with better benefits and recevies a smaller salary than average. Guess what, happy employees work harder for him and Costco is extremely profitable.

@ENCINOM, Yes the CEO of Hostess did get a big raise, but what you fail to mention is the fact that he was also fired and replaced. After Hostess filed for Chapter 11, they hired a guy to come in to help with restructuring and the first thing he did was fire the CEO. The second thing he did was renegotiated the Union Contracts with both Unions, the one Union accepted the concessions but the Bakers Union refused because they wanted more pay and benefits. So while the Other Union members agreed to take a cut in pay and benefits to save their jobs, the Baker’s Unions, being GREEDY, refused, went on strike and ultimately forced everyone to loose their jobs and forced Hostess to close it’s doors permanently. Moral of the story, when Unions force Employers to pay higher wages and benefits when times are tough, businesses like Hostess go out of business.

Encidiot – Any proof that Costco has to deal with unions like Hostess did? And you show that you have no knowledge of what accounting or math are. Even the raises of the CEOs added altogether aren’t nearly as much as the combined expenses of the employees.

As a young gal I read an article about how sleezy the Unions were and decided I would never be a part of a group who are so violent and show no respect for another person’s point of view. Then I had a mother-in-law who normally was a nice lady who went loony when her company went out on strike.

Couldn’t believe how violent she talked and acted and I wanted no part of UNIONS, or her, and finally moved away.. Why pay those horrid union dues and be told what to do, then allow those horrid unions to give millions to a political party you want nothing to do with??? You probably won’t ever get what you’ve put into the unions back when this Nation goes down hill with obama at the helm.

Understand clearly – this is a portion of the battle for the dominance of America, by the progressives and the union thugs, and the extremists against the will and wishes of the people who want to be free.

What will happen when one of these band of union thugs manages to reach a legislative body and do real harm to them? What would stop a union band threatening their families, as has happened in the past, from crossing the line and drawing first-blood, or for that matter one of their family members or a threatened legislative member from feeling they have no choice left and fires first in their defense?

We all can imagine Obama’s response all too easily.

So, you think $88/hour is a “fair wage” for doing assembly line work? Because according to Crain’s Detroit, that’s what it costs for the wages, bennies and pensions for your blue color brothers. Don’t seem very reasonable to me.

Sorry, but if your CEO and upper executives are making millions of dollars and yet they claim their company is going broke…it isn’t the workers who need to take a pay cut.

Just like the nonsense someone was spouting on a different page, saying how they make over 250k a year, so they will be affected by the tax hike, and that will cause them to probably have to fire someone at their small business.

Well, guess what?? You could take a paycut yourself and ensure that your employee has a steady/stable work environment, while also lowering yourself out of the bracket affected by higher taxes! Oh, wait, lol…never mind. People would rather make someone suffer and blame it on the big bad democrat, rather than take a pay cut themselves for their employees.

Employees make a business run, not the business owner. Business owners OWE their employees a decent wage and safe working environment; and if they cannot provide that while also making more than 98% of Americans out there…then maybe it’s time THEY think about taking a pay cut themselves.

I’ll agree that to take some huge bonus when the company is tanking is poor form at best, but considering Hostess had 18,500 workers, if you were to confiscate that and divide that extra amongst every one of them it isn’t much at all.

RanePowell, you are not looking at the 250K comment objectively. I own a small business. I put everything I own on the line…everything. I downsized my house and pulled the equity out to finance my business. I sacrifice 80 hours a week. I’m there long after everyone else goes home. I fight every week to make payroll. I haven’t seen a paycheck in 2 years. I can’t sleep at night thinking about my employees families and how much they count on their jobs in this economy. If I was as selfish as you think I am, I would have quit and closed the doors 2 years ago. I could lose everything…the business, my sweat equity, my home. When the company turns the corner (which will be next to impossible with the coming regulations) and it finally makes a little money, I will be the evil greedy capitalist who is selfish and doesn’t care about my workers. Quit listening to the divisive garbage being spewed about by the folks who do truly want to enslave Americans. Get real, if you only want to “risk” 40 hours of your life waiting for your next paycheck, then you get paid according to your risk. If you choose to put it all on the line (and in today’s world – a hope and a prayer) well then you should be rewarded accordingly.

That’s correct America, your right to work has got to go. Just remember that your electricity, gasoline, food, and water are all delivered and maintained, for the most part, by a union. They have no reservations about letting you freeze and starve as we witnessed in the aftermath of hurricane Sandy. So my question to all of you who are good for nothing but to enrich the union coffers with your hard earned income is what are you going to do about it?

If unions want to try and slow down or even stop delivries, after the law is passed then they can be replaced no problem. I have been in a union sence the early 70 t’s and only because I had to. the union leaders lie their a?? off to the rack and file, It”s all about power and money, So when I see state leaders standing up and doing the right thing for there state it make’s me think there is still hope.
