‘Racist’?: University of Miami Sends Out Emergency Text Only Alerting Students to ‘Black Male on Campus’

The University of Miami is under fire over an emergency alert it sent to students on Thursday attempting to notify the student body of a crime, but instead only sending out the description of the alleged criminal. In this case, people were told to be on the lookout for a “black male on campus.”

Here’s a copy of the message:

Almost immediately, critics lashed out calling the gaffe “racist.” The Miami Herald has a couplw examples:

“Why yes, UM, there are black guys on campus,” Emma Marzen posted on Twitter. “Good job ENN for forgetting to send the rest.”

Posted Alexander Norton: “how would you handle UM’s racist ENN report? #PRprobs #crisismanagement.”

The school — red-faced — later apologized.

“The initial ENN was both incomplete and insensitive and the University of Miami offers its sincere apologies,” the school wrote in a statement. “University leadership has already launched a full investigation of the incident, the ENN and University procedures.”

The suspect, the Herald reports, was eventually captured after stealing a computer from a dorm and trying to sell it back to its owner for $1,000.

    Racist? Only if you have a rod up your a$$. Bad form? Definitely, since it didn’t even give height, approximate weight or build. That would mean ANY Black male with clothes like that could have been reported as the suspect. And that could have had unintended consequences.

    Of course there are black males on the UM campus. Seeing as 3.3% of the undergraduates are black males and 75.7% of the football and basketball teams are black, even if they aren’t really student-athletes to begin with…

    Oh, this is just STUPID! They have no problem identifying a WHITE male? As many details as quickly as possible to help avoid the criminal is okay with me! Follow up with more details asap. If they didn’t do this and someone got raped or even killed, they would also be criticized. DUMB story.

    the abbreviated ‘warning’ is laughable and deserves to be made fun of.
    i don’t believe that it is ‘racist’ and would suggest that anyone truly believing it to be such is searching for racism so hard their daily behaviors are likely racist but as a polar opposite (and that could apply to radicals of any color).

    Sadly PC is so rampant that universities will soon be faced with having to offer a complete description of suspicious persons without color gender or idendifying characteristics, rendering such warnings as useless as this one, while facing enormous litigious pressure in the event that any attempt to warn their students fails and someone is injured or killed.

    Until we remember there is personal responsibility in all that we do, this culture will continue to spiral into the darkness, not destructive of our position and status immediately, but which will (and already is) rob us of potential advances and innovations.

    A month or so ago, a black commentator on MSNBC described a murder suspect as an “ethnic male”. This PC stupidity actually made me laugh. Aren’t all males “ethnic males”. Surprise, surprise…the suspect was a black “ethnic male”. Don’t these PC commentators realize how utterly stupid they sound?

    What’s wrong with adding his skin color to the rest of the description?

    NOTHING.

    If they had simply said a black male, then it would have been racist. Because his skin color was included in a description of what he was wearing, etc., it would help separate those who were dressed like that but of different skin color.

    It always bugs me when I hear a description of a criminal but the person’s skin color is NOT included. If I’m to watch for a guy in black pants and a purple shirt, I want to know that I don’t have to wonder if the Black guy in those clothes is the criminal, or the White guy, or the Asian guy, or whatever.

    Why make things more confusing and have everyone suspicious of everyone dressed in clothing that fits the description when you can immediately clear everyone of a different skin color?

      Nothing, except that just from what wassent out, every Black person wearingt hose type of clothes could be a suspect. A little more info could’ve helped. Like ,was the suspect fat or thin. Tall, short of medium height. Those little things.
      Just put in “white” for “black” in the message and you’ll see what I am saying.

    my only problem is that they gave no height and weight, ****… these are distinguisable features with clothes, and then skin color may be important… with out height and weight… and a facial feature or two its not enough

    So what is the problem? .. was the criminal white? It was a DESCRIPTION .. if it said … white male on campus wearing black and white tennis shoes, white shirt w/blk writing, black shorts ….
