HONOLULU (AP) — A high school on Hawaii’s Big Island was temporarily closed after officials say racial tension and multiple fights this week culminated in a brawl involving 20 to 30 students, with eight arrests.
Police and state education officials said Kealakehe High School in Kailua-Kona was closed Friday as teachers and administrators figured out how to get control of problems with students as they begin finals next week.
Nobody was seriously hurt in a Thursday fight that led to a campus lockdown at the school of 1,600 students, Hawaii County police said. Police said eight students – seven boys and a girl – were arrested, charged with disorderly conduct and released.
The school’s principal, Wilfred Murakami, said the fights resulted from ongoing “bullying through racial and cultural taunts.”
“The result overflowed on the Micronesian side where there was frustration, yelling and screaming – a reaction,” Murakami told West Hawaii Today (http://goo.gl/4r3GT ). He didn’t immediately return calls and email seeking comment from The Associated Press.
Hawaii Department of Education spokeswoman Donalyn Dela Cruz noted no one was seriously hurt but said there had been concerns about “social issues” at the school.
“Kids are taunting each other. Some resulted in physical altercations,” Dela Cruz said. “Not many – no major injuries – but enough where it’s caused disruption for the last two days.”
Dela Cruz said a smaller fight on Wednesday prompted another campus lockdown, where students were told to go back inside classrooms and stay there.
Immigrants from the Federated States of Micronesia are a small but fast-growing group in Hawaii as a result of a 1986 pact that allows citizens from three Pacific Island nations to come to the United States in exchange for allowing the U.S. to use defense sites.
School officials are not just concerned about fighting, but posturing and students anticipating fights.
“People gather to watch and that needs to stop,” she said.
Kailua-Kona, on the west side of Hawaii’s Big Island, is known for fishing tournaments and hosting the yearly Ironman World Championship triathlon.
According to U.S. Census data, 17.5 percent of its nearly 12,000 residents were born outside the United States, with one-quarter of families speaking a language other than English at home. The median household income as of 2011 was less than $61,000, with 10.5 percent of people living below poverty levels.
Immigration from the Federated States of Micronesia, along with the Republic of Palau and the Republic of the Marshall Islands has been a source of tension for some residents in Hawaii, the closest U.S. state to the Pacific islands.
In the 2010 fiscal year, Hawaii spent more than $52 million on health care, welfare, public housing and homeless support for more than 17,000 migrants from the compact. In addition, education costs were more than $55 million.

Dec. 8, 2012 at 7:48amMy brother and I moved to the South in the early 70′s, and there were such things as “Riot Days”, ie. kind of like “Snow Days” up North. My mother didn’t believe us that one Friday, near the end of the school year, we didn’t have to attend. She called the school and was advised that we would not be counted absent, if we didn’t attend that day. She hung up, shaking her head, and said “We are NOT in Kansas anymore, Toto.” My brother and a friend were walking down a hallway once, and my brother stepped into the art class for a moment, and his friend continued on. His friend was then jumped on by a gang of another race, and beat so severely he was hospitalized. My brother was so shaken up after that. We had been raised to judge people by their character. It is shocking how people (of ALL groups) will treat people based soley on their color. Why are we not teaching that it is the CHARACTER of a person that matters?? Oh yeah…then we would have to encourage kids to develope a Good Character, and then you get all kinds of arguments, i.e. By whose standards do we hold up? What about Relativism? Are we saying that one set of rules is better than another? Etc, etc, etc…

Dec. 8, 2012 at 8:54amyou see america now? MLK Junior advocated the content of character for so long, just to have the liberals destroy all that he accomplished. There is so much hate against whites in this country now that it’s ridiculous, they’ll never let anyone feel equal because of what our ancestors did.(not mine, but i’m white so you know…) I’m with you brother. We used to talk about being colorblind… but the democrats made sure that was just a dream. It is not the past that defines a person, it’s what they do with the time givin that proves who they really are.

Dec. 8, 2012 at 9:39amBALZY: The hatred against whites ? Part of Obama’s coded ” tax the rich who don’t pay their fair share.” To see the president of the country use such rhetoric to ” Fire ” up his base ? To see the president of the United States continue to push this issue and further divide our political parties and citizens ? Why ? What is his purpose ? Simple. Research his mentors and background. Research his Chicago past associates. Why ? Because he wants to ” change” America and ” redistribute” goods and power – which are other coded messages. Research Karl Marx for starters. And Chicago’s own Bill Ayers, while you’re at it. ) The code isn’t hard to crack. Nor are his tactics and rhetoric .

Dec. 8, 2012 at 7:39pmBALZY, MLK was assuming black people had character. I know very few who do and the ones that do will not be attacking white people for the hell of it. I was in a mall in Tampa, Florida several years ago right before a Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M football game at what was the original Tampa Buccaneer football stadium and they were running lose, stealing, hitting elderly people and being generally hostile to mall shoppers. The football game is no longer and the mall is closed. They closed another mall in Tampa several years ago on the east side because women couldn’t leave work without an escort after store hours. There were assaults and attempted rapes. The mall is closed because no one went there anymore because of blacks. We have another mall near the University of South Florida that is may be closed and turned into offices for USF because it is a huge black hangout and gangsta show and no one shops there. All the stores cater to black culture but I guess it ain’t enough in Tampa to support that sewer. There are constantly sheriff and police cars around the area to prevent assault on the innocents. This type of stuff goes on everywhere.

Dec. 8, 2012 at 7:38amLived on the Big Island for over 35 years, Kealakehe is a large school. Many Micronesians live in Kona and Hilo. My son went to UH Hilo and there were many Micronesians who made huge noise every night, drank too much and were literally a pain in the okole. When people are given too much, they tend to take for granted and abuse. All my 4 kids graduated from a Big Island high school and I’ve never heard of “kill a haole day”, that’s a fabrication most likely perpetrated by the liberal left trying to make something out of nothing and of course some how trying to implicate that probably haoles were the reason.

Dec. 8, 2012 at 8:09amSorry Zatoichi. Not sure about the Big Island, but in Leilehua HS in Wahiawa, Oahu they had a “kill a haole day”. The teachers would tell all the Haole’s to stay home that day. So my wife, who is very light skinned and was a military dependent at the time would skip school that day. That was in 1979. So the matter of racial tension has gone on for several decades and is not a liberal invention. Now I got over as someone who tanned dark like a local and my last name sounded Samoan, so no one messed with me.

I’ve never really had a problem with racial tensions…I remember in southern Missouri living in the “working poor” part of town, but right on the border of what I would call “takerville” now. My son (white and Down syndrome) ran up to a black kid to hug him. The kid acted like he was about to get stabbed. I said he just wants to hug you, so he did, but looked around to make sure no one was looking. I’ve had mean looking HS kids stare me down, and I just smile at them, they end up smiling back. Guess I’ve been lucky, or I have one of those innocent faces.

I’m glad at least this school had the decency to close down… hopefully for a long time. Make the lazy parents of today actually parent their own kids and feed them breakfast. These loser kids video tape it for Youtube. People have no morals anymore and the media, schools, and the parents are to blame… and of course, the government who purposely and happily created this type of atmosphere. Hey, somebody has to riot so the government can pretend to “take control” and “be helpful” to throw away our current constitution – which they never abide to – and substitute it for Shariah Law. That’s why they pin all races against each other and use “singers” such as the crappy slutty women who perform porn shows on stage (Madonna, Britney Spears, etc.) instead of just standing there and singing a damn song like Barbra Streisand. And the damn slutty Victorias Secret commercials during rated G programs. All men 35 and younger see women as sluts, whores, and unfortunately wouldn’t mind having Shariah Law here in the USA.

Dec. 8, 2012 at 12:31amWhy should any of this come as a surprise? Mr. & Mrs. Obama & their ilk have actively promoted racial division during most of their adult lives and, in particular, over the past four years. They’ve made it quite clear they intend to ratchet up the racial divisiveness. Many of us (not the majority, though) recognize what their endgame is. This racial divisiveness is merely a means of putting in play events which will make way for the Obamas and other powerbrokers to complete the scheme for total take-down of what little remains of this Republic. It will happen because the majority of the 50% of American adults who vote are easily manipulated and are not interested in standing on their principals to the same degree that the colonists stood 230 years ago. It will happen also because of the remaining 50% of American adults — the ones who don’t vote. The “star communities” which have been prepared in the U.S. by your cities, UN-ICLEI, SCNSD/SCI, and other UN affiliate organizations, will be the receptacle for those survivors rounded up during the intentionally-provoked racial war and collateral uprisings. For those brave enough to read the forty (non-fiction) mandates of UNa21, here is the link: http://habitat.igc.org/agenda21/

Dec. 7, 2012 at 11:32pmNothing new here. Anyone who has lived in the islands has heard of “kill a haole day.” That’s a local term meaning “empty breath” or “liar” they apply to whites. Kill a haole day is celebrated at most every school in the islands in early spring. One white kid is chosen and the locals gang up on him or her, beating them severely. They frequently require hospitalization. Mainstream media never report on this, but all the local whites and military kids and families know it well. I heard one administrator – Hawaiian – say in response to parental concerns at a meeting say “well, boys will be boys.”

I have seen black kids get along with white kids just fine only to see the same white kids make fun of other blacks. Some kids buck the trend. Sometimes they have something common like sports, but if they didn’t, then the underlying racism would come out at least as a cold shoulder.

He had to be rushed to the hospital. As soon as he recovered enough, his family left. A couple of the guys were screwing some Micronesian girls (hard up, most are ugly) and some local boys started some crap outside a local dance club in Palikir. Most of us were drunk but after a couple of hits they ran. The next day the lesbian, fat, ugly America ambassador to Micronesia invited our group over and scolded us because she heard about the altercation. She threatened to have our per diem stopped (the only reason any of use volunteered to go) if we caused another problem. The commander and chief were yes ma’am and one MSgt spoke up and said, they came at us, we had to defend ourselves. We spent the next 2 months in camp, with no local privileges. He apologized but we are glad he did because the PC female piece of crap would have found a way to have our azzes. We were there to build/repair some buildings and basketball courts and fix roads.
