Why Is Russia Threatening the U.S.?

Russia Angry Over Magnitsky act

MOSCOW (AP) — Russia has strongly criticized U.S. legislation that calls for sanctions against Russian officials accused of human rights abuses and warned that it will respond in kind. A leading anti-corruption crusader, however, hailed the bill as “pro-Russian.”

The bill is primarily intended to end Cold War-era trade restrictions and was hailed by U.S. businesses worried about falling behind in the race to win shares of Russia’s more open market, but its human rights part has outraged the Kremlin.

The measure, dubbed the Magnitsky act, is named for Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, who was arrested by officials he accused of a $230-million tax fraud. He was severely beaten, repeatedly denied medical treatment and died after almost a year in jail in 2009. Russian rights groups accused the Kremlin of failing to prosecute those responsible, while independent media claimed that such tax frauds are widespread.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry responded to the U.S. Senate vote late Thursday by calling it a “show in the theater of the absurd.” It warned that Russia will respond to the new legislation in kind, adding that the U.S. will have to take the blame for the worsening of U.S.-Russian ties.

“Probably people in Washington forgot what year it is and are thinking that the Cold War isn’t over yet,” the ministry said in a statement adding that “it’s weird and strange to hear human rights-related complaints against us from the politicians of a country where torture and abductions of people all over the world were legitimized in the 21st century.”

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told Russian media that “we will ban entry (to Russia) to Americans that are in fact guilty of violating human rights” in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and other nations. Speaking in Dublin late Thursday after a meeting with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, he reportedly said that he informed her about the possible bans.

Russia’s leading anti-corruption whistleblower and opposition leader Alexei Navalny wrote in his blog Friday that “the Magnitsky act is absolutely pro-Russian. It is aimed at scoundrels that stole 5.4 billion rubles, laundered it abroad and then tortured and killed a Russian citizen.”

Sergei Alexashenko, an economist who was a deputy chief of Russia’s Central Bank, said on Ekho Moskvy radio late Thursday that despite the angry official rhetoric, the Kremlin would be unlikely to take strong anti-U.S. action for fear of causing an even bigger strain in relations

The Russian Foreign Ministry also claimed that the new legislation is driven by a “revengeful desire to settle scores” with Russia for its stance on international issues.

Russia and the United States have clashed on Syria, with Washington accusing Moscow of propping up Bashar Assad’s regime despite its bloody crackdown on an uprising that began in March 2011. According to anti-government activists, more than 36,000 Syrians have been killed.

Russia and China have used their veto power at the United Nations Security Council three times already to block sanctions against Assad’s government. Moscow also has continued to ship weapons to Assad, shrugging off Western protests.

This is sort of a Russian version of Obama’s Benghazi. Obama was just able to get rid of his by letting the enemy do it for him. Both have tried to sweep the deed away. God sees all and that is my consolation.

All of this proves how ineffective the UN really is and why Bush got tired of waiting. We had better hope that the Islamic wackos in Iran/ Pakistan , etc., do not get hold of a nuclear weapon since the Obama Crowd actually thinks that the UN, which allows Iran / Syria, etc. to be on the Human Rights Committee, can actually prevent them from using them. The UN was a nice idea but it is ineffective in dealing with really dangerous wackos. Money spent ? Returns gained ?

What nation is more involved in violating the sovereign borders of other nations, Russia or America? Truth is, it’s America. We’ve lost our way. We’re about to do it again in Syria.

Are American lives or property at risk in Syria? No. Is American sovereign territory being invaded, in Syria, not Texas? No. Then stay out and mind your own business.

Jerk: What is your opinion of the Europeans who allowed the Germans to annihilate the European Jews, Catholics, handicapped, gypsies, mentally deficient ? Were they morally fine since it did not have anything to do with them – if they did not fall into one of those categories ? How about when the “rebels” attacked the US embassy grounds/ compound in Libya ..ok to let them ? Just curious as to where you draw the moral line in this.

Barber2, read what I said, not what you wish I said. There was a war going on when Hitler committed those acts. Those nations had security risks. They took action.

Second, stop using the Holocaust industry in order to make your points. Fact is, Jews declared war on Germany in 1933. They fed the fires of their demise. Fact is, they were as we are now; getting involved in the domestic affairs of another nation. The very sad fact is, our educational system never presents the whole truth.

JERK : you lost me on the ” Jews declared war on Germany in 1933.” That is absolute bunk. Hogwash. Lies. I don’t have a problem with ” staying out of another country’s business”..up to a point. We tried doing that prior to WWII , but the Japanese brought it to us at Pearl Harbor and we almost LOST all of our Navy and many American lives. I really wanted to have a moral discussion with you, but your comments on the Jews shows me that is impossible. The Islamic fanatics and our ” target the rich ” Democrats ( a mild form of it ) share the scapegoating and the hatred which fueled Hitler’s consolidation of power. They are all sick, twisted, evil and dangerous. Hate is never a permissible nor a wise foundation for any movement. Nor is Targeting a segment of a society.

I know this isn’t a popular view but maybe we shouldn’t be demonizing Assad. He is the ruler of a nation that is under attack by radicals using terrorist tactics. His response has been brutal but he is in the position that the US and Israel find themselves in a lot. He is fighting a war against a group that hides among civilians and then cries when innocent people are killed. I am in no way endorsing his behavior but I am not sure we should support the radicals who are trying to seize power either.

Suppose the Chicago radicals decide that we do not need to have representative form of government ? Suppose they turn the OWS crowd loose to “change” capitalism? A healthy respect for law and order is important. For our government to give arms to mysterious “rebels” today ( given the total duplicity of the burka wearing suicide bomber/ civilian soldier crowd ) is appalling.

      B2smooth, very astute point.

Look, destabilizing the Middle East was a plan written by Jewish American neocons back in 1996. They hid nothing. They wrote a strategic study that has since been used as the guide. Not letting a good crisis go to waste, they implemented their strategy for Israel in 2003. It was convoluted, but they used 9/11 to invade Iraq, a nation that had nothing to do with 9/11.

How did they do all of that? Those authors, of the 1996 strategy for Israel, were all placed into the Bush administration by former JINSA adviser Dick Cheney. The rest is history, with many American lives wasted and trillions of our dollars squandered. The study: “A Clean Break: A New Strategy for Securing the Realm.

But a more well known lie is that the President is a Marxist/ Commnunist.

The president wants to destroy America.

The military didn’t mobilize during the attack in Libya in September of this year, when they were only an hour away.
