Anderson Cooper and GOP Senator Clash During Interview on U.N. Disability Treaty

Republicans in the Senate surprised some earlier this week when they voted down a United Nations treaty for the “Rights of Persons with Disabilities.” Republicans have said that they do not want to disparage disabled people, but they are concerned about provisions in the treaty that they believe will trump state laws and make the government at U.N. direction–not the parents–the one who ultimately decides what is best for children with disabilities. During an interview on CNN Friday, Anderson Cooper and Senator Michael Lee got into a heated discussion over why the Utah Republican opposed the treaty.

Lee argued on CNN that the treaty would undermine American parents decisions for their children with special needs, possibly obligate the U.S. government to pay for abortion services, and may set in place ”international entitlement rights.”

“You’re just interpreting things,” Cooper said. “It never uses the word abortion, it basically says that disabled people should have the same access to health care that other pople have, that non disabled people have overseas.”

Cooper and Lee went back and forth on how the treaty would change U.S. law.

“Can you name any other U.N. treaty that has forced changes in U.S. law,” Cooper asked.

Lee responded ”I didn’t come prepared to cite Supreme Court precedent on this point but it’s a well known fact that once you ratify a treaty–”

“But what you’re saying is totally hypothetical” interrupted Cooper.”You’re using a bunch of hypotheticals saying they’re going to–this is going to force abortion rights for disabled people overseas, some groups are saying children with glasses are going to be taken from their parents, you’re using all these very scary hypotheticals–you cant even cite one case where a U.N. treaty has impacted U.S. law?”

“You can’t assume that because something hasn’t happened already that it couldn’t happen in the future,” Lee went on to say. Lee also took issue with the U.S. getting involved in non-international relations treaties.

“Typically Anderson we use treaties to deal with international relations, to deal with the law of nations, acting on the world’s scene,” said Lee. “This deals with a lot of issues that are distinctively domestic in nature.”

Liberals obsession with big government. The meaning of law or a treaty is to administer, impose, change or govern; if this treaty does not accomplish one of these objectives then there is NO purpose for this treaty? Bring awareness through education not pretend regulation.

Looking at the name of the bill says it all, Disability Treaty. It means they want legislators to vote with their emotions. They want the title to tug at your heart, “oh the poor disabled!”

If that’s how you rationalize legislature, the only one disabled is you.

Where is my UN vote? I don’t have one? Then why would I want to give that body control over anything that affects my liberty? Is Anderson Cooper ready to embrace the laws promoted by that body? He really should give that some more thought.

he’s saying that even if the bill has bad ideas, at first glance it looks like it’s helping a disadvantaged people. Most people don’t read such bills, then just believe anything the left says about what’s in it. So ignorant people will probably be all for it, cause they think it “helps” disabled people in some way. Many people who have read the entire treaty and see the need to vote against it will look like monsters who don’t care about disadvantaged people. It’s making you think the U.N. cares about disabled people, when in reality they just want the ability to take disabled kids away from “unfit” parents. If you don’t know how little the U.N. cares about human life(especially those unable to contribute) compared to nature, then you need to go to un.org and educate yourself.

You know how you join 2 nations together without much stress & without war? The same way you put 2 generators on the same grid. The 2 generators have to be with a few degrees of each other or there are major problems such possible equipment destruction.

You don’t put 2 or more countries together via top down commands. Our laws are different. It is not that nations do not adopt foreign ideas, it is that they adopt want they find useful & discard the rest.

One does not force a law onto people by hook or by crook by a group of intellectuals that have been in government all their life & are now in the executive branch & a plurality of 100 senators. That is not they way to implement things.

What does the UN do well? Peacekeeping in Somalia, Darfur, The Middle East, Korean Peninsula, solving the Vietnam Conflict, preventing the Iron Curtain? Does the UN prevent rockets form being fired into Israel from UN bases in Lebanon? Are you the one firing rockets into Israel from the UN bases?

What has the UN done about malaria. they abated it a little. Other people or organization would have done much better.

Has the UN resolved the problem in Western Sahara after 37 years of trying. Are you on the clock?
Don’t worry, the native population will be dead or bred out before the UN declares that they have their 99th comprehensive peace deal.

Even the uber-liberal website Mother Jones has reported on this, saying, “President Obama is using a Cold War-era mind-control technique known as “Delphi” to coerce Americans into accepting his plan for a United Nations-run communist dictatorship in which suburbanites will be forcibly relocated to cities. That’s according to a four-hour briefing delivered to Republican state senators at the Georgia state Capitol last month.”

The idea that the UN would use the ADA to set a standard for treatment of the disabled in foreign countries was Bush’s idea – he and his administration negotiated this treaty. Hello! Does no one but me understand the connection between Bush and the Saudi Muslims and the the Caliphate and Illuminati?

This Bush initiative serves no purpose but one. Enslave Americans. There. I said it. This UN treaty has one and only one purpose: to take the first step toward a One World Government under the guise of helping the disadvantaged.

The United States has laws for the disabled that should be a standard for all countries. Should the U.N. dictact laws for soverign countries? An emphatic NO. Every country has the right to run its government as it sees fit. Who died and made the U.N. ruler of the world? Their purpose was to stop wars. After taxpayers have pumped in trillions of dollars since their beginng, how has that worked out?

As far as I can see they have wasted more money than they are worth. All the U.S. employees at the U.N. are funded by our federal government (read you and my dollars). I can think of better ways to stop wars than giving our money to yet another failed idea of the elite.

One is making the U.S. a might to be reckoned with. We should leave all muslim middle eastern countries and let them kill each other. But if one of them messes with Israel or us, glass parking lot.
Once we found out that the perpetrators of 9-11 all came from Saudi Arabia, bye bye. It is the only way they respect.

And why in the world is our state department allowing muslim immigrants into our country? It would be different if they were persecuted Christians from Muslim countries but no, they are inviting pure muslims as students and immigrants. Does this make sense to you?

Afterwatching the clip, two things stood out. First, Mr Cooper used the comment made by Mr. Ferris regarding children with glasses in an unfair manner by playing it after concluding his interview with Senator Lee, thus insuring that there would be no rebuttal. Even then, the comment about taking such children away from their parents was not made by Mr. Ferris on the clip, but came from the mouth of Mr. Cooper. Second, it is apparent that Mr. Cooper approves of Nancy Pelosi’s policy in which you are supposed to vote something in first to find out what’s in it afterwards. If the UN treaty had been intended to simply extend our ADA law to the rest of the world, then there would be no need to ratify it at all, right? Oh yeah, Congress can amend the ADA, but what happens when it is found to conflict with a ratified treaty?

I agree. Having UN laws become the law of our land is not what I want for our country. If this treaty is indeed based on our ADA than there is no reason for us to ratify it. There are too many unknowns about what this treaty actually covers and means. I don’t want to have to register my child with a disability with the government. It’s not the government’s business and there is no definition of what a disability is with this treaty, so it could mean anything that anyone wants. I don’t want the government in my parenting decisions and telling me how I can/cannot parent for any of my children, and I am willing to fight this when it comes up again for a vote in the new year, so are many others.

The biggest problem with the UN treaty (excluding any idea of whether and how it might impact our national sovereignty) is that the UN sends its bureaucrats to live in poor countries in a manner that most reminds me of the extremely rich. UN aristocracy has large ideas made in wealthy Geneva such that it addresses problems that are not the important ones. For example, they might try to enforce a wheel chair access regulation without realizing that people don’t have wheelchairs, and when the UN tries to get the wheelchairs, there are no elevators in buildings where people live on the 12th floor. And more importantly those people don’t have heat and enough to eat. The UN still wants compliance to the wheelchair access rule so the bureaucrat seems successful back home in Geneva. The UN sucks as a charity provider. Anybody who buy UNESCO Christmas card is a dupe.

i knew i wasn’t the only one that noticed that, liberals can’t ever win with the truth alone. they always have to sugarcoat it with at least one lie. So was it only hypothetical that a black man could become president? Was it only hypothetical that we could turn our backs on israel? Was it hypothetical to think we would lose our rights to free speech/expression? Wasn’t it hypothetical when Glenn made all those predictions about the middle east? So we must all live in the past like this guy?! We shouldn’t worry about what’s happening? what a load of crap. You learn from the past, so that you can do your best to assure yourself and family a better future. Saying that this treaty is for the well-being of any disabled people is hypothetical. Cooper here doesn’t even understand what Lee is saying. If either party fails to uphold their obligations per the treaty, they will be held accountable under international law. This Treaty applies to ALL disabled people, not just foreign. So we are giving the government and the U.N. the power to tell people all over the world, including our own people how to rasie their child if they have disabilities. I’m sorry, but i could sit here all day telling you how many times the government has been wrong as hell about what is “best” for us. We all know how the U.N. feel about disabled and elderly people, the U.N. think they are a waste of resources. So why help give them power over ANY disabled person?

usetp2wipe Since you’re not smart enough to have read this thing, lets walk through some portions, shall we. Art. 9, par 1 says children cant be removed from their parents EXCEPT when “competent” authorities say so. Who are these “competent” authorities? Art. 43, par 1 establishes the “competent” authorites. Dont we already have competent authorities here in the US? Why do we need authorities working in conjunction with the UN – who have NO authority in the U.S. to tell us what child should stay with the parents and what child should be removed? We have many laws in place right here in the good ole U.S. of A. that dictates AMERICAN law. I do not live under the authority of the UN. If you want to, THEN MOVE!
para 3 of art. 43 further states that this committee shall be elected by secret ballot and 4 says the Sec. General of the UN handles that election. para 5 which I couldnt fit in my post says “The elections shall be held at meetings of States Parties convened by the Secretary-General at United Nations Headquarters” Again, I do not recognize the authority of the UN where it supercedes the law of the United States. If you dont like our law, again you are very emphatically invited TO LEAVE THIS GREAT COUNTRY FOR ANY 3RD WORLD POS HOLE YOU’D LIKE. BUT DONT FORCE THIS CRAP DOWN AMERICANS THROATS. All anyone needs to know is that the UN serves no good interest to the United States of America and it’s Constitution and Bill of Rights. We should pull out of the UN and send the headquarters to Dubai or Bangladesh. UN Resolution 1618 is reason enough, coupled with Agenda 21, Small Arms Trade Treaty and now this garbage. It’s all about NWO and slowly taking away our sovereignty and US citizen’s rights. But, of course, Barry needs the UN to carry out his sinister plans of treason.

The treaty itself is toothless, yet these fools in the Senate, in stead of making America a world leader in equal rights for all, are returning to a isolationist position.

Not only are Liberals idiots they are gullible. We can show definitive proof of something someone said and they will still deny it will ever happen. Muslim Brotherhood comes to mind. Mursi and Obama are kindred brothers. Liberals are just too trusting and can’t see the bigger picture. They work in the hear and now and in their book just because it is not happening now, they say it will never happen. 99.9 % of the time they are wrong. You’d think they’d learn. Remember, we are dealing with people with NO COMMON SENSE and LOGIC.

@USED-To-WIPE: If the U.N. has no influence on the U.S., then why did the NAACP run to tell them about our so-called “voter suppression”? Then they send their thugs here to “observe” our voting polls? Oh, lets see now……maybe the NAACP knows (from Barry and Holder himself) that they will get some back-up from the control freaks at the U.N. Sounds about right to me.

@Turbocat, do you really believe what you just wrote?

Election technical analysts (college professors, parlimentarians, and the like) visit election sites for dozens of government at the invitation of the governments. The US has been inviting such independent observation and feedback for decades. It is a great idea, if only to show off to Russia, China, et al, that OUR elections are untainted, and to learn from the report written by the experienced observers.

      from http://osce.org
The United States is a founding member of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, a 56-country international organization focused on human rights and security. More than 100 parliamentarians from Europe and Central Asia will travel to the United States in the coming days to observe the November elections “We are not coming to judge a result but to report about the process,”

I read the USA report, and a handful of others at random. Good technical information, especially when a country is slapped down for favoritism or trickery.

Go read the USA report. It will surprise you in its agreement with many of our positions. Your nonsense rants make us look like idiots and will continue to cost us elections.

Come on Anderson you HAVE to be smarter than that. Do you mean to say you don’t see the bigger picture here? Be a real journalist! Look for the bigger picture instead of picking at ridiculous things: “you can’t cite one case? you mean you can’t cite one case? What? you can’t cite one case?” hammering that one question… even AFTER the Senator gave you a reasonable response to it?
Seriously Anderson? You want to waste time picking… instead of having a real conversation that explores the ramifications of a treaty like this? Kudos to Senator Mike Lee for trying to have a mature discussion with a deaf, dumb and blind “reporter”.

While Cooper was deflecting with his cherry picked questions, Lee was just not prepared. Considering that he is a Constitutional Attorney, he did seem lame. His best point that corrected Cooper was once the treaty is signed and ratified by the Senate, IT DOES BECOME LAW OF THE LAND. No, it will not be UN personnel telling Americans what to do or not do with their children. It will be libs here in this country backed by the ratified law and the lunatic courts. This will be more leverage for them to do the whacky things they have been doing for decades as progressives. The other part is that the U.S. will be required to pay more for even more of the wacky programs going on around the world.

The UN of today is nothing like the UN at its conception, when it was meant as a neutral forum where nations could negotiate and iron out their differences, making war a last resort. It has become a Frankenstein’s monster — nobly created but eventually running amok.

TO ANDERSON COOPER: What part of “THE U.N. SHOULD have -0- (No) RIGHTS over ANYTHING done in the USA” don’t you get?

The U.N. is supposed to be a place where all the nations of the world can come and discuss problems, seek treaties among themselves and volunteer member nation’s soldiers to stop violence (like Syria – good job with that, eh?) IT IS NOT, SHOULD NOT BE, WILL NEVER BE as far as most Americans are concerned, a GOVERNING BODY in control of Individual nations. Operative word is CONTROL.

WE, THE PEOPLE, DO NOT GIVE UP OUR RIGHTS of SELF-GOVERNMENT to any entity other than ourselves. GOOD GRIEF!!! You bloody liberal, know-nothing/do-nothing MSM creeps just won’t be happy until you are enslaved, will you? You silly sheeple use OUR HARD FOUGHT FOR FREEDOM of SPEECH to strangle us. WTH is wrong with you? You communist idiots!!

PATRIOTS: Tweet your Senators/Reps (we should all have our own TWEET LIST of those people to make communication fast and easy for us – it will take about 40 minutes to set up but then you have it. Get their names on line first (copy, paste, save on separate page), then go to Twitter and establish a List of YOUR SENATORS AND REPS -Name it SEN/REPS. Then do the search. The name will come up and a small square with a ‘head’ icon and a down arrow. Click on down arrow and then Add to List) You now have your permanent SEN/REPS Contact List!) Good project for today!!

Exactly right. All you have to do is remember that very recently Ban Ki Moon tried to talk Bashar Assad out of killing his own people by “talking” to him and you can see the abject EVIL of BOTH Ban Ki Moon AND Bashar Assad! TALKING to that evil man as if he could REASON with him! For God’s sake the guy even LOOKS like a descendant of Hitler! But then again, LOTS of U.N. members frequently mix with evil people like that! Anderson wants to TRUST any of them with anything? No way in hell, Anderson. Be a good boy now and mind your own business.

So if the UN was unable to stop Syria, and all the other examples listed elsewhere (Rwanda, Korea, Isreal, etc), why are we so afraid that this toothless paper tiger will rise up and take children from our homes?

Which is it? Is the UN all-powerful or impotent. We should unfund it and not trust it because it will try to steal sovereignty, and it is simultaneously unable to act in any sovereign territory.
