Egypt Military: Expect ‘Disastrous Consequences’ if Crisis Is not Resolved

(AP) Egypt’s military warned Saturday of `disastrous consequences’ if the crisis that sent tens of thousands of protesters back into the streets is not resolved, signaling the army’s return to an increasingly polarized and violent political scene.

The military said serious dialogue is the “best and only” way to overcome the nation’s deepening conflict over a disputed draft constitution hurriedly adopted by Islamist allies of President Mohammed Morsi, and recent decrees granting himself near-absolute powers.

“Anything other than that (dialogue) will force us into a dark tunnel with disastrous consequences; something which we won’t allow,” the statement said.

Failing to reach a consensus, “is in the interest of neither side. The nation as a whole will pay the price,” it added. The statement was read by an unnamed military official on state television.

Egypt’s once all-powerful military, which temporarily took over governing the country after the revolution that ousted autocratic leader Hosni Mubarak, has largely been sidelined since handing over power to Morsi weeks after his election.

But it has begun asserting itself again, with soldiers sealing off the presidential palace with tanks and barbed wire, as rival protests and street battles between Morsi’s supporters and his opponents turned increasingly violent.

The statement said the military “realizes its national responsibility in protecting the nation’s higher interests” and state institutions.

At least six civilians have been killed and several offices of the president’s Muslim Brotherhood set on fire since the crisis began on Nov. 22. The two sides also have staged a number of sit-ins around state institutions, including the presidential palace where some of the most violent clashes occurred.

Images of the military’s elite Republican Guards unit surrounding the area around the palace showed one of the most high-profile troop deployment since the army handed over power to Morsi on June 30.

A sit-in by Morsi’s opponents around the palace continued Saturday, with protesters setting up roadblocks with tanks behind them amid reports that the president’s supporters planned rival protests. By midday Saturday, TV footage showed the military setting up a new wall of cement blocks around the palace.

Tensions have escalated since Morsi issued new decrees granting himself and an Islamist-dominated constitutional assembly immunity from oversight by the judiciary. The president’s allies then rushed through a constitution and he announced a Dec. 15 nationwide referendum on the charter.

Morsi has called for a national dialogue and scheduled a meeting on Saturday, but opponents say he must first cancel the referendum on the draft constitution and rescind his recent decrees.

Only veteran liberal opposition politician Ayman Nour attended the meeting with Morsi on Saturday. The other eight delegates were Islamists.

The president has insisted his decrees were meant to protect the country’s transition to democracy from former regime figures trying to derail it.

Obama is Morsi Jr. If he could he would do the exact same power grab as Morsi. Mr. Obama never took the position he now holds to work in concert with anyone that disagrees with his stances. He is here to run roughshod over the American people and claim his right as dictator in this country. Take a quick look at Hufpo and see how many people are out there that want him to do just that, then consider the massive ammunition build up the government has been doing the last 4 years.

Be awake, be ready and know where you are going after this life.

For years we in the west have asked “Where are the moderate Muslims who will denounce the actions of the extreme Islamists?” Could we be seeing the start of them standing up now that the Islamists have taken power and are starting to assert their extreme views? The moderate Iranians have been held down for thirty years by brute force; surely the moderates in Egypt and Tunisia are aware of how that has gone. It’s not such a big deal when it happens to the (non-Arab) other guy, but when it’s happening to you….

Im sure our president wishes in the back of his mind, that he could be and do like Morsi,,,and issue a decree of sorts for himself,,,,,,,,,,,thats why our constitution is set up the way it is so as to prevent this…lets just hope if someone here at home tried to extend their powers in the way Morsi has, that our military would step in and side with the citizens, who are the brothers, sisters and parents of the military. I am hoping this will be the case in Egypt. We dont need another dictator there or here!

Yeah, the MoBroHo has been infiltrating US for years, if not decades. There are countless thousands on our soil. I personally would not be surprised to see the “Civilization Jihad” occur on Dec.21st. What better time than that ? Many mis-informed and uneducated people already believe that it the world will end then anyway. Can you imagine the shear horror and panic that would follow if bombs started going off at the same time all over America ? I also think the first thing the MoBroHo will do is to take out our vulnerable Power Grid and possibly try to poison many water supplies. You take away people Power and Water, especially at the beginning of Winter, and there won’t be enough body bags to go around.
Of course 99% will say ” that could never happen in America”.

IF the Muslim brotherhood hasn’t purged the military of officers yet…;then the military is the most reasonable organization (believe it or not) in Egypt. They know the world as it is. They are not radicals awaiting the Mahdi. They are realists. We have worked with the Egyptian military before and can so again. The Egyptian military has the needs of the country at heart (so far). They are not as radical as Morsi. If our military loved the constitution instead of their pensions… they might be surrounding Washington too.

FDR six weeks after his election, confiscated all the gold to establish the American Federal Reserve, which led to a global currency (under the advice and direction of Russian operatives?)?

We did what the Russians wanted, why are they so mad at us?

Comrade Morsi, like Comrade Putin in Russia, must rid his country of the “pro-democracy” elements. Only the Muslim Brotherhood and Sharia can bring peace to the Middle East. Let’s petition our Leader to extend the necessary resources to the Esteemed Brothers of the Islamic Jihad. Allahu Akbar !!!

Lets see Morsi just proclaimed himself Pharoah of Egypt. Unempeeded power and no one says a thing. Not our President nor the media nor the U.N. . This is more relevant than when Mubarak was in office. And over time these people will show themselves to be worst than those we have chosen to replace. 24hr 7 day a week coverage on T.V. . Like Libya Iraq Egypt and now Syria we are knowingly helping to format a Caliphate. God help us

HEAR: Morsi’s idea of ” democracy” is quite similar to Obama’s: My Way or The Highway. They just use different means of achieving that end. So far Obama uses intimidation, media character assassinations , SEIU, OWS, and secret ” organizational” methods. Morsi uses his Muslim Brotherhood buddies with their al Qaeda types waiting in the background…

Barack Hussein is doing the same thing that Mohammed Morsi is doing – do as much damage while their communist/islamist party is in office so that it will be impossible for opposition parties to reverse. The majority of Egyptians are pro-western and are not radical islamists, but they’re about to be plunged into sharia law. We will have communism. Both are impossible to reform without being conquered or collapsed. happy thoughts

This ‘Arab spring’ movement cooked up by the Islamists and Barry Soetoro is designed to keep Islamists in power throughout the region and create a caliphate.Barry and the MB are two peas in a pod working toward the same goal.

This reminds me of our situation in Washington : we have a president who won a close election but refusing , still, to work with Republicans over his core , Fire Up His Angry Base , divisive issue ” tax the evil rich.” Republicans still believe that this will further hurt the economy and stifle job growth. ( JFK wanted to ” reduce taxes to prevent a recession in 1963…strange how DIFFERENT a Democrat he was from the Chicago radical ” redistribution” crowd ! ) . Will our military also have to settle this ? As a taxpaying American I am sick of these power plays and this bullying. Thugs do not belong in the White House nor in congress. GO HOME and let adults solve these problems, you bullies and you pinheads who now ” run” our country….into the ground.

True, and Obama will do all he can to ensure the democracy never arises.

Interesting is the translation of the Egyptian Military: Solve the problem, or we will and this time the power taken by us will not be surrendered.

Morsi needs to understand the message to him as well from the Egyptian Military – it is an ultimatum and not a suggestion. IF or When the military becomes involved, there will be no mercy shown to Morsi or the Muslim Brotherhood.
