Egypt’s Islamist President Morsi sparked outrage after granting himself near dictatorial powers in November, placing himself above any form of oversight. Hot off their last revolution, in which they ousted longtime leader Hosni Mubarak, the people refused to replace one dictator with another. They have been protesting in the streets for weeks, even briefly succeeding in driving Morsi from the presidential palace.
It appears the protesters have won this round. International reports indicate that Morsi annulled the most controversial aspects of the recent decrees on Saturday.
The Washington Post has more:
The decree will be replaced by a modified version of the original declaration, but the most controversial article — the one that placed all of Morsi’s actions beyond judicial review and sent tens of thousands into the streets in protest — is gone, said Salim al-Awa, spokesman for a national political dialogue held Saturday aimed at resolving the crisis.
Rescinding the decree satisfies a key demand of opposition leaders. But a Dec. 15 referendum on a new constitution, which opposition forces wanted canceled, will go ahead as planned, Awa said.
The compromise was reached at a meeting Saturday that Morsi had billed as a national dialogue but that was boycotted by all but a handful of opposition figures who had earlier said that if the referendum was going ahead, there was nothing to talk about.
It remains unclear whether the new moves will be enough to ease a political crisis that had degenerated in recent days into unprecedented scenes of division, with Morsi’s Islamist backers and his secular and liberal opponents hurling rocks and Molotov cocktails and beating each other bloody with sticks.

However, the news coming out of Cairo has been somewhat conflicted. While it seems Morsi is backing down for now, the Wall Street Journal reported earlier that the Islamist may soon put the country under martial law.
The Wall Street Journal writes:
Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi may empower the country’s military to arrest civilians, according to the country’s state-run media, as hopes dim for a negotiated resolution to the country’s extended constitutional crisis.
The state-run Al Ahram daily newspaper reported Saturday that Mr. Morsi was preparing to institute a form of martial law a week before a controversial constitutional referendum that could augur more street-level violence.
If the report is true, Mr. Morsi’s decision would turn back the clock on Egypt’s hard-won transition to civilian rule. Following a year and a half of military rule, Mr. Morsi handily cast the army’s leadership aside in August…
It was unclear Saturday whether the Al Ahram report was meant as a cynical threat to intimidate the deepening ranks of Mr. Morsi’s secular-leaning supporters or if it was a genuine leak from the president’s office.
It remains to be seen whether the protesters will be satisfied with the developments– or whether Morsi is just biding his time until he can make another power grab.
Here is raw video of some of the protests:

The Obama Regime gave themselves credit for the original Tarir square. They have nor had many harsh words for Morsi.
You are so convinced that it was Hillary, then say what statement she said the made a difference?
If anything made Morsi change his mind that the U.S. did it was Obama threatening to cut off aid or (extremely unlikely) threatening to use covert means to unseat him. The aid is what 1.5 to 3 billion a year? That is a big threat. But Egypt foreign currency reserves last I knew were decreasing by about 1 billion a month. In about 6 to 10 months they are done. The next time Obama makes that threat will it work? I don’t think so.
I think the people themselves 7 not Hillary nor Obama made Morsi relent. Whether they will be able to do so again depends on the war of attrition on the streets. It took several years for the NAZIs to beat the hell out of the communist in the streets during the 1920s. Possibly the Muslim Brotherhood could using state resources & street followers do the same to the protesters in a shorter time.
I don’t think Morsis goose is cooked until the foreign currency reserves are at 0 & the economic hardship is such that people just don;t care what the security apparatus & street thugs do to them.
Victory in Syria by the MB might give Morsi a boost or a reprieve, but it won’t fill bellies.
This time next year Morsi will be gone or Egypt will be a police state Muslim style.

You are shameless or dumb. You did not read the article at all or with comprehension. He is still going ahead with the referendum. It was 6 steps forward for him & 1 step back. is that much of a setback. In the near future he can go back & implement it.
If the referendum goes ahead seeing as how the Muslim Brotherhood got a majority of the seats for parliament or whatever they call it & won the presidency, they will win this referendum. That will give him a little more leverage. That plus the attrition in the streets will enable a win.
Maybe Hillary can give him a basketball signed by Michael Jordan like Madeline Albright gave Kim Jung il. That worked. NOT! :)

Bush in no way did anything like Emperor 0bama who just wants to continue bypassing congress. Your understanding of history apparently goes no further that the tip of your nose. Even Bubba Clinton rattled his saber regarding Iraq and in so doing many fellow dems in congress were behind him. Later, even Senator Hillary rattled the same saber and voted to invade Iraq. But, to a simpleton like you, you just call it Bush’s war. Fell for all that crap from the dems who later turned their backs on what they voted for, along with the media. Had you had your eyes and ears open back then, even the media was not entirely against the invasion. So, sit there at your keyboard and continue to tell youself lies. Dec. 9, 2012 at 10:04amwell truth-be-told Walkabout & RJ, Iraq wasnt a declaration of war – it was authorization to use force. USA did not declare war for Vietnam or N Korea either. It is a reflection of the anti-Constitutional forces that rule from Washington.
If you think ‘authorizations” the same as ‘declaration of war”, then i would point out that we had been at war with Iraq for a very long time. Even during the economic sanction years….

Correct. And that is as good as it gets. Korea was the 1st mistake in not declaring war.
And the result would be to start from Japan or Hawaii after the populace wised up, if we only committed troops upon declaration of war. This lack of persistence in dealing with threats is something William Eaton could attest to.
As far as Iraq was concerned, we were at war for a very long time. Since the 1st Gulf War. An armistice is not exactly a peace treaty. Either Iraq continually broke the the armistice or Kerry, Clinton (both) & many other democrats were lying. They do lie a lot but not continuously about everything.
