‘They Were Children’: 7 & 11 Year Old Boys Attempt Armed Robbery in Oregon Church Parking Lot

(TheBlaze/AP) — Every once in a while you come across a story that makes you concerned for the future of your nation. Thievery has been around since the beginning of time, but police related the details Sunday of a unique case.

Apparently two young boys, ages 7 and 11, tried to rob a woman in a church parking lot in Oregon.

The 22-year-old woman was in her family’s truck waiting for her parents, Portland police said in a statement, when the young boys approached her with a gun.

Ami Garrett of southeast Portland told officers that when the boys approached her, the younger boy told the older boy to “show her your piece” before demanding her car.

When she refused to give them her vehicle, assuming the gun was fake, they reportedly demanded cash and her phone.

“They were children,” Garrett recalled on Sunday, according to Oregon Live. “I didn’t think they’d actually have a real gun.”

But when one of the boys grabbed her arm and began waving the weapon, saying he was going to “blow [her] brains out,” Garrett said her heart began to race and she knew it was time to pull away to safety.

Thankfully, the boys were apprehended in the parking lot by officers responding to reports of children with guns.

Police said they recovered a loaded .22 caliber handgun from the older boy’s pockets, after initial resistance.

Detectives are investigating how the boys obtained a gun, and where exactly their parents were. Because of their age, the boys could not be taken into custody at a juvenile detention center, so they were returned to their families.

The 11-year-old tried to escape his parents’ house shortly thereafter, but was quickly caught by officers and returned to his parents.

“All it would have taken was a pull on the trigger,” department spokesperson Sgt. Pete Simpson commented.

More to the point, he added: “I’ve never heard of a 7-year-old being involved in an armed robbery…These weren’t just two kids goofing around.”

And just what would these pint sized carjackers have done with her car? Drive it a few blocks before they sideswiped a row of parked cars or blown through some intersection? These two kids should be suspended from whatever school they go to just in case they get the bright idea to bring a gun for show and tell. What do you wanna bet they wouldn’t have dared walk up to a man in a vehicle and tried the same stunt? What we have here are two kids desperately in need of a spanking, restriction of privileges, an hour a day of raking leaves, and absolutely nothing for Christmas. You wanna run away? You think you’re mad at me now?? Wait until the police find you and bring you back home. You’re going to want to tell the police someone stole the toys out of your room. Only they won’t be stolen . . . they’ll be DONATED to some place where children deserve them more than you. These kids just need an attitude adjustment.

  The parents need to do the time for these boys seens how they are to young. I am having a hard time with parents these days that are letting their kids run amuk. What happened to teaching your children morals? Put the children in jail with their parents and maybe they will have alot of time to get to know each other.

  Suspended from school? Now there is an effective punishment! Those kids don’t want to be in school in the first place so letting them go do what ever they want to do as a punishment? If you want to punish them put them in school ten hours a day seven days a week.

  The 11 year old would go in front of a judge in Ohio. We have community detention centers, both kids need to be evaluated for neglect etc. Something is obviously wrong with these parents. My kids would not see the light of day for a year.

  The parents in this case probably don’t care to begin with and the idea that they’re too young for juvenile detention facilities is insane but then it is in Portland, Oregon. These kids are probably already a lost cause and I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if the kid didn’t sneak out but that his parents let or threw him out of the house saying to go play. A scare like juvenile detention may have been what these kids needed.

  As for the juvenile detention angle I know from living in Pennsylvania for most of my life that the 11 year old would border on the age to be tried as an adult for a crime involving a firearm. that oregon won’t even put him in juvenile hall is a travesty.

  I was arrested at age 11 for Auto burglary because I grabbed a handful of ink pens from my friends trunk when he opened it.
  
  It was consentual. The boy was not opposed to me taking 5-6 of his DAD’s Pens.
  He also took some of his dad’s pens.
  They had images of women on them and their clothes would disappear when they were turned upside down.
  
  In retrospect, I could have fought that charge and won had I been aware of what was really going on.
  
  In retrospect his dad was a real “expletive” for pressing charges against an 11-year old for something so mundane and trivial.
  
  He could have asked for them back, before calling the police.
  My mom didn’t know the law, and I was too young to know anything of substance.

  Looks like it’s time for military school! I don’t care how old my child is, if my kids ever do something like that, they are going to military boot camp until I am convinced they turn around 180 degrees. I want the drill Sargent to scare those kids straight! make them sleep on the floor with just a sleeping bag; don’t let them eat dinner unless they have done enough hard chores.   We’ll be hearing more about these two in the near future. Let’s see Rape, Burgelary, Murder and Arson, anything that normal people won’t do in a normal society. The Parents are more at fault than the Children, but that’s not to say that the Children are to be let off “Scott Free”. They have to pay also to show the error of their ways.

  SORRY BUT I WOULD HAVE BEAT THE H5LL OUT OF THEM AND THEN THE PARENTS,had a gun pulled on me in the 80′s ,waited till he was with parents ,then went to his house and beat him for 5 min till his dad pulled me off ,then beat him again when let go of .told his parent i see him again i was coming after them.problem solved.now if you point a gun at me you better use it

  Don’t you just Love the Mentality of People these days. Kids act up & do Dangerous Things or Act out what they see in movies & Right away, Society Starts Blaming the Parents?
  In a Society where PARENTS are Being Arrested everyday for Spanking their Misbehaving Brats, or sending them to their rooms without their Hand Games, Cell Phones or Computers, And then this sort of thing happens, What is a Parent to do?. I never heard of such things Happening back in the 50′s. Sure, We had Young Punks in their Late Teens try Stunts like this, But Never with Kids below 12 years old. At lease, not as often as we do now.
  Fact is, After REMOVING GOD from our schools, Shutting down any teaching of MORALITY, MANNERS, or just plan old SELF RESPECT, all bets were off & our Kids became Hoodlums, Almost over night.
  And how did our Government help?, They Blamed the PARENTS, After Tying the Parents Hands With Threats if they were caught ” Disciplining Their own Children in Public”.
  Maybe If we were to Reopen those BOY’S or Girls Ranches & Start teaching our Children,” WITHOUT OUR GOVERNMENT INTERFERING,” Right from Wrong, Maybe then We could return to a Quality Family Lifestyle we use to enjoy.
  As for all of those ” National Socialist & Atheist out there in Never, Never Land, Send their Butts to Sunny Calif. ONE WAY, & leave the rest of us Alone! As for those Murderous Muslims, Declare a Jahad on their Worthless Butts, Give them 30 days to leave & then Go Hunting!.

Kids can shoot you as dead as any adult can, despite levels of maturity (awareness). It is what follows the logic of self-defense these days that worries responsible adult citizens. Are kid’s rights so sacred now that adults don’t have a fighting chance without facing jail time and the racially biased media character-assassination that goes with it?

  not much has really changed, except the level of audacity. When I was a kid back in the 60s, there was the mindset among the juvenile delinquents: they knew they would not be held responsible due to their young ages. I even heard a few of them say that they knew they could get away with it (whatever their particular crime intentions were) until they were 16. Then they would have to stop because they did not want to go to “reform school” as it was back then.

  If I read the caption under a couple of photos above I am pretty sure that the boy with his face blurred out is white…..and race is really not salient to this story. The fact is that as has been mentioned already….the female victim should have been armed herself….and shot both of the boys right in their pointed heads…just as soon as there was an indication that one or both of them were armed. Both boys are mentally defective and menaces to society….no different in terms of danger than little Islamic midgets the same age.
  
  I would wager that both boys are from families on public assistance…probably broken families….and that they play video games. Any takers on that bet? I know liberals love to “suffer the little children” so much so that everything they do they do “for the children” including preventing some 8 month old fetuses’ live past the labia……but alas….indeed there are little hellions among us….bad seed if you will…and they are incorrigible and the chips should fall where they may. Had those boys approached me with that jive and thug behavior…..they would both be laying in coffins right now…..at room temperature…with the mainstream media braying about my wickedness instead of the boys own deadly behavior. No one should be exposed to this kind of societal dysfunction…at any age….from anyone at any age

  You don’t have to spank to have a disciplined environment where kids know their limits. Usually the best way to do this is with a two-parent household where both parents back each other up and enforce the same limits. Kids will still push the envelope, but if parents are consistent about what is NOT acceptable behavior, it will eventually pay off.
  
  If it is a one-parent household like mine, it is harder.
  
  But kids need boundaries that are clearly defined and consequences need to be immediate and “memorable.” Physical punishment just leads to greater and greater shows of force. It is ineffective in the long run.
  
  Teaching values of love — like sacrifice, kindness, obedience, respect, cooperation, and letting everyone have jobs in the household so it runs well (work ethic) — this is what parenting is all about.
  
  Trying to be “best buds” with minors with whom you have been entrusted is just stupid. They will know you love them if you parent well.

  TRADCATHOLICGIRL… from my personal experience of growing up, a good swat on the butt or hand got my attention, but upon reaching the age of reason corporal punishment no longer worked. At that point other modes of disciplining had to be used.

  It’s only partially the parents’ fault. Look at the laws parents have to follow in “raising” brats. They have more rights than the adults. If these laws were in effect when I was raising my children, I MIGHT, just now, be getting out of prison, and the oldest is 51. If a kid pulls a gun on me, he better be pulling the trigger at the same time. I have NO qualms in protecting myself, AND, I carry.

So the one writing this article says “every now and then” a story causes her to wonder where the country is going? My God every day there is more proof that the Agenda to drive this culture in a direction designed to destroy it and make America so corrupt it stinks is “progressing” nicely..

the kids are abused at home, or are bad seeds- but they send the kids back home? Why not to mental ward, or lock down at hospital ward for prisoners until the parents can be checked out? And somehow the kid gets back to the victim? And the reporter was right there? What the heck? Something stinks.

Kids need to know their limits quite soon in their lives. They either learn or die in prison.

Sorry time that IF this happened in my state they would have been trumped with a .45 BUT do you pull the trigger or do you stomp them??? .22 can kill as much as anything else………damn these kids for making us NOW think of this choice….in combat I would have dropped ANYTHING carrying an RPG-7 or AK!!!

  Priscilla King – YES. That 7yo child could harm another child or an adult. A gun is an equalizer – it can kill whoever is on the wrong end of it. If a child was threatening someone with a gun and I really thought he’d pull the trigger, even accidentally – I’d do what it took. Then I’d deal with the guilt and nightmares later.
  
  These little punks probably won’t make 18, frankly. Not unless Mom and/or Dad gets a clue.

The eleven year old lives next door to the Church. In the video, he comes up to the reporter for his “interview”, only to be told by the reporter that he’s too young to be interviewed without his parents present.

I guess that this is what we get when getting on You Tube is the most important thing.

Looks like they were white, good, there wouldn’t be any uproar over racism if you put your truck in gear and run em over like squirrels.

I guarantee you those kids will be problems their whole lives, animal abusers, drug addicts, knocking up crack hoes, probably they won’t even help out washing the dishes. I say damn those kids, damn them straight to hell.

I had a couple punks about 12 and 13 (3 of them) pull a shotgun on me with a cop car in plain sight not 50 yards away.. I asked them what are they going to do about the cop and they told me “F_ck that cop, he ain’t gonna do sh__t”. And he didn’t. I can’t say that the cop was looking, but those kids didn’t care one bit. I’m not kidding. And there was a place that Acorn worked out of adjacent. I swear this is true. I am not kidding. The craziest part is, I didn’t think all that much of it at the time. Need I say what color the kids were? This is a result of al sharpton, jesse jackson and the rest of the ‘community organizers’. This is 100% true. I can show you the exact spot of all the positions on a googlemap.

I lived and had many job in Portland and the surrounding area, SE Portland considered the East side it had been predominantly black and low income then the new age, metro envrio, types moved into the area trying to make it all Multi cultural that hasen’t gone too well as many black communities feel somewhat displaced as communities are redeveloped and pop culture grocery stores are installed mostly organic high priced…. South East Portland is probably the last Bastian of black community in the region as most of NE Portland has subsequently been remodeled and sold at a higher price. Interestingly even MLK street is much more multi cultural than it was back in the 80′s back then it was not safe to visit if you were any other race than “African American” back then the whole east side was somewhat enter at your own risk, and if you parked your car on the wrong block you might find it gone and if it was a cheap one it’d be on blocks parted out.

  Well, you can’t expect prayer to change someone’s mind. We all have free will. It’s like the church’s around here with the fast/prayer to end abortion signs. You can’t expect God to change someone’s mind and take away their free will just because you prayed for it. You change the world by being a positive example and getting out there and doing good.

  Millions of people have been graced with what they need through prayer. We all can participate in charitable works to help the world, but there are some problems that are too big for anyone but GOD to fix. Prayer never hurt anyone.

  HOOT_OWL… while I appreciate the sentiments, I have come to the decision to let those types of comments (like EDWEST70’s) to speak for themselves. It doesn’t do any good to sink to the least common denominator.
  
  Dagnabbit5… Indeed, one can have great effect on the local, and sometimes broader community by being a positive example through action, and yes, we all have free will which God will never violate. But no one knows as to the extent voluntarily suffering, and the offering up in prayer such suffering has on any given soul’s openness to Grace. Besides, the Bible exhorts for the fasting and prayer for our brothers and sisters who are in need. What God does with such efforts is His Will.

I do believe that the Children should be taken to another location. Its hard to take kids from the parents but if these leftist loons that brought us Child Protective Services are not willing to take charge then. Parents around the country that have been falsely accused and had their lives ruined by the Agency need reparations.

All you racist white folk! They were just doing what they see on the news every night. When the government took discipline out of the household, took daddy out of the house hold, took personal responsibility out of society, this is what you get both in the black and white community. There is NO WAY those kids should ahve been placed back with thier parents.Yet foster care isn’t the answer either. There should be a “young offenders” lock up where there is a very authoritarian leader who lets them eat, sleep and live under very strict supervision. Nurse Ratchet comes to mind! But no drugs. Bet me these kids grow up to be our next group of gang banging thugs.

  The reason the question is being asked is because the article never states what color the kids were. You can look at the video but there is no definite proof that both kids were white since we only see one. Besides maybe this person commented BEFORE the video was added they do update stories here.

These kids were merely turned over to their parents. They were not put away.
I don’t care if they were only 7 and 11. These kids are a danger to society.
They need to be put into a facility that can help them straighten up their act.

  I have potential problems with Miss Garrett’s reaction to the kid showing up to the news reporter. She looks cowed. Maybe it is PTSD & that is understandable. If it is not PTSD or the fact that she would get in trouble for laying into him if he so much as touched her, then yes I have problems with it. She has reach on him after all.

Oregon, it may be about time to rethink your “rules” about the minimum age for holding suspects of violent crimes in custody. I’m thinking releasing these kids back to the custody of their parents is returning them to the source of their problems.

  Oh DianeTX speaking of Reconstruction, if War on Terror where enacted back then and blacks would have been left alone with our 40 Acres and a Mule instead of being frightened away and forced into Urban Cities during the great migrations, almost all Black Americans would be as country as you and other Freedom riding Texans and Dixies as we would be left free as well.
