Chris Matthews Loses Debate With Veteran Badly: ‘I Was Actually Fighting in Iraq’

Chris Matthews Loses Debate With Log Cabin Republican, Military Veteran on MSNBC

(MSNBC)

During a debate with a Log Cabin Republican about the GOP’s opposition to gay marriage and the party’s current rebranding effort, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews passionately asked his guest whether he was fighting against “Karl Rove” and other Bush-era political players. He was apparently hoping to make a point that his conservative guest is only pushing back against the GOP now that they lost an election.

Truth be told, Matthews’ guest, R. Clarke Cooper, of the Log Cabin Republicans, was not fighting in the political realm in 2004 — because he was actually fighting for America in Iraq.

Salon’s Joan Walsh started the conversation by saying that Republicans who are trying to “liberalize” the GOP are working against the establishment that is “hidebound” to a “white, conservative, Christian, very backwards base.”

“It’s worse than that, Joan,” Matthews added. “You guys, Karl Rove and your buddies, remember Karl Rove? Eight years ago you went up to Ohio and you went up to Cleveland in the black areas and you basically went to the black ministers…and Don King…and you rallied all them” to fight gay marriage.

“And that, in ’04, that was an exploding cigar, and we’re paying a price for that as a Republican party,” Cooper agreed.

“Where were you then,” Matthews shot back. “Did you fight Karl Rove?”

“I was actually fighting in Iraq. I was deployed in ’04,” Cooper answered. “There you go.”

“OK. Touché,” Matthews said sheepishly. “You win. You win.”

After trying to laugh it off, Matthews thanked Cooper for his service and said he had a “very good alibi.”

It’s not so much that more people are supporting gay marriage it’s that more and more people are so sick of the battle and don’t give a damn! Have your gay marriage and shut up and leave us alone!

We the People of the United States in order to Form a more Perfect Union… said each of us must contribute or this house of cards falls. Part of contributing is family. We need educated individuals in a strong family.

Gay marriage would allow mothers to marry daughters, fathers to marry sons, sisters to marry sisters and brothers to marry brothers. Marry means to raise a family. We have legal contracts for property. We have power of attorney for non family.

We either stand for something or fall for anything.

      What do you stand for?

Actually, more people are not supporting gay marriage. 41 states currently outlaw gay marriage either by law or constitutional amendment. If you look at the votes, I mean actual votes and not propagandized polls, gay marriage has lost resoundingly. The states that have victories for the most part have won thru courts that have usurped the votes of the people (with the exception of the two states which are so damn liberal stalin would love to live there). So if you step away from the propaganda on tv you will see the people really don’t want this. Even California voted against it overwhelmingly, not once, but if memory serves me right 3 straight times (no pun on straight).

Watching the news, you’d think gay marriage was the new iPhone or pair of sneakers. It’s shiny and new and what everyone wants for Christmas! It’s only a matter of time before all the states get it.

MSM is using “news” as a form of propaganda, to make you believe that you ARE the only one is hasn’t gotten onboard yet. It’s on the news. In your magazines. In the latest sitcom on television. Comedy sketches on SNL. Pretty soon it will be on your kids’ Happy Meals.

This is straight up psychological warfare for your vote. You will eventually comply and vote ‘yes’ because you have finally accepted it as something you can’t change. It’s everywhere. You just want the quiet again and ask, will a ‘yes’ shut you up?

Homosexuality is a deviant behavior. However I have a gay uncle and I love him like an uncle I don’t agree with him being gay, but that is his choice. I also don’t believe this is a Federal, State or even local issue. It is a religious issue, give all the gays the contractual benefits of a marriage but let religion and the church decide to define it as a marriage. What the Gov. should do is enact laws that protect the church whenever Tom and Harry demand to be married and the church tells them to go pound salt. We are giving this issue to much attention anyways and by doing that we are giving it justification, lets focus on something else turn the attention somewhere else and when the church tells the LBGT crowd to screw off nobody will pay attention.

is getting married to your cousin or sister a “religious” issue only?

Is having multiple wives a “religious” issue only?

Is a thirty five year old man having sex with a ten year old boy a “religious ” issue only? (that one will follow gay marriage in the not so far off future).

Sexual deviance destroys families and nations. Be it rape, child molestation, having sex with animals, or homosexuality. It is deviant, it goes against nature, and is against the family and the nation.

You can have your own opinion, but not your own truth.

The reason this is the new message (“Gay marriage is good”) is because people are starting to ask questions that lead to the real debate that we should be having. “Should the Government even be involved in marriage?”

“Let the gays get married, so people will get their mind off marriage and we can keep that power.” Spiritual people (many cultures have a marriage system, and they all involve higher powers) should be outraged that Government took the place of God, or Gods.

I truly could not care less what two consent adults do within the confines of the home. Saying that I think that Government should have stayed out of the marriage issue from the beginning. A judge cannot marry anyone, marriage is a sacrament preformed by an official of the given religion. Judges (in that capacity) can really only perform civil unions. My concern ( and I think it’s likely to happen) is that some LGTB activist will sue a Priest or Pastor (for following the dictates of his religion) if he refuses to perform such a marriage. Though I don’t even at this juncture such a suit would be ultimately successful, the costs could be devastating tho the pastor or Priest and their Churches.

Permit *ag marriage and then where does it end? Why couldn’t the law be expanded for these deviates to not only get married but maybe sleep with their favorite farm animal or animal(s)…..they already have their legal “unions” in many states and worse yet, they are given the right to adopt children. A friend of mine is a psychologist in this state. She worked –she now is retired -in a local school system where she was part of a Child Study Team. Over her career she dealt with quite a few messed up kids who had been raised by these deviates. Talk about identity crisis !! Little girls just transitioning into puberty were cautioned not to get involved with boys but rather seek and maintain girlfriends while all the while these kids were brainwashed by their “parents” about how wonderful the gay lifestyle was…….VERY sick….

Nice try but that tired thing does not apply here. Gay marriage isn’t and never has been illegal anywhere in the US. You seem to think you are in some Middle Eastern country. You are not. Gays have been free to marry. The debate here is government acknowledgement of the marriages. The fact that they shower benefits only on “traditional” married couples is the issue. It’s not about legality. There is no law which criminalizes same sex marriages. Why? Because any such law would automatically be trashed by the supreme court due to the fact that such laws would be unconstitutional.

Sodom was destroyed, and was wicked. The people of Sodom Gomorrah were partaking in homosexuality. The two angels visited lots house, and the sodomites surrounded the house, and wanted to have sex with what they thought to be two visiting men.

In Lev 18 22, were at told that men that have sex with men are an abomination.

In Romans chapter on, it tells us that homosexuals are wicked (both lesbians and sodomites), and calls them reprobates.

The Bibles is very clear that a marriage is between a man and a woman, and is also very clear that homosexuality is evil. World history clearly shows us that nations that embrace homosexuality soon after fall, and science shows us that homosexuals are a diseased and unhealthy people. Crime reports show us that they prey on children, and assault each other at an alarming rate.

Let them have their gay marraige and then what? They will continue pushing for anything they want until we give in. What kind of statement does that give to the nation? “We can have whatever we want because they are weak and manipulative.” We need to step up for what is right and stand strong.
But what is “right?” This is the true battle that needs to be won. Everyone’s definition of right and wrong is different. This comes down to the religious argument of evolution vs. creationism. If one believes in the religion of evolution, than there are no morals and values. If one believes in the religion of creationism, than there are morals, values, and virtues.
Today, right is wrong and wrong is right. Bad is good and good is bad. Evil is right and good is evil. This world is upside down.

Personally, I don’t care what same-sex people do. None of my business. Does not affect me one way of the other. But my Bible-beliefs say it’s not a good thing, in fact same-sex anything is loathsome.

But the good part is that same-sex partners cannot create another human…and that’s good for population/birth control. I think just somewhat better than killing a gazzilion unborn/born babies.
In my view there’s a whole lot more bad things going on in the world than homosexuality.

So…which is worse: same-sex sex, or murdering defenseless unborn (or born) babies?

My answer is that it’s worse to murder/torture unborn/born babies. The babies don’t have a choice.
      Homosexuality has a choice.

Whether you believe in Christianity or not…one day God will sort it all out.
And He will be very angry.

@ Rangerskippy – I agree with much of what you have said, but i want to have a little fun, so here we go. King David had many wives and concubines and yet this was said of him.

      1 Kings 15:5
5 Because David did that which was right in the eyes of the Lord, and turned not aside from any thing that he commanded him all the days of his life, SAVE ONLY in the matter of Uriah the Hittite. (emphasis added)

If it was not wrong for David to take multiple wives, or concubines we can also assume that Abraham did “that which is right in the eyes of the lord” by taking multiple wives and concubines

      Gen 25:6
6 But unto the sons of the concubines, which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac his son, while he yet lived, eastward, unto the east country.

      Whats your explanation of that?

That is an awesome question, and most likely some one will jump in and give a better answer than I.

For some reason, many in the old Testament did have multiple wives. It always seemed to me, that those that did, always had problems from it, including Solomen, david, Abraham (big problems when he slept with his wife’s handmaid), and so on.

I believe Isaac, Job, and some others in the OT only had one wife, and seemed better off for it.

I do know that in the NT, we are told to have only one wife. I will research it, and see if I can come back and do better.

      Thanks,

@RangerSkippy – You act as if Abraham went behind Sarah’s back (Sarai at the time), this is not so, I don’t think the lord would have accepted that.
      Genesis 16:3
3 And Sarai Abram’s wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.

Is this the NT verse you are talking about? If so what is a bishop? Was Abraham or David a bishop?
      1 Timothy 3:2
2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach

Now in your defense of using the Old Testament against these nay sayers.

Didn’t Jesus quote from the Old Testament multiple times? He came to fulfill the law of Moses and end sacrificial animals. The law of Moses did not cover the full spectrum of teachings in the Old Testament. If this is not so then how did Adam, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob function? If there was no structure of teachings prior to the Law of Moses why then were tithes being paid?

18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.

19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:

20 And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.

Divorce rates are so high because love and vows to God are put on the back burner to the monetary things in life…..Protecting the sanctity has actually destroyed the sanctity by subsidizing, and giving monetary perks.

The gay argument about them having a lower divorce rate, will go out the window once there relationships switch focus to monetary issues. Right now they feel like they are fighting for a cause together, and it creates a bond, like bonnie and clyde love feeling.

Get Government out of marriage, and put God back in….
All the Bible quoting people, love to talk about putting God back into schools, but no mention of God back into marriage…….you’ve been conditioned….i get it….And don’t want to lose those perks…God means a lot…but not that much……messing with your monetary life…not going to happen….

P.S. i dont think anyone is saying legalizing gay marriage WILL make incest legal, but saying what it does is open pandora’s box…

Treetrimmer- Your argument is so flawed it is insane. It is exactly like saying the banning of cocaine will absolutely lead to the banning of asprin. Gay marriage hurts no one and your fear of change is not reason enough to trample of another citizens individual liberty. Freedom should be our goal, not telling others what they can and can not do because we are ‘afraid’ of the social implications.

Liberals hate economic liberty and conservatives hate social liberty. How about putting aside the hypocrisy and simply stop believing it is ok for government to tell us what we can and can not do when we are hurting no one else with our actions.

      @jetriot

your argument is flawed as well….it takes looking at how laws will evolve to understand.

Your argument is flawed because you say his argument “is exactly like saying the banning of cocaine will absolutely lead to the banning of asprin.” well has the banning of “drugs” not opened pandora’s box on the regulation of them? And as for aspirin…if I am remembering correctly, not very long ago they were trying to stop selling children’s aspirin over the counter…they wanted to force it into a prescription based medication. …Banning of certain drugs HAS opened the door for the government to come in and regulate, after we as a scociety said it’s ok mr government you can control that because it is better for us.

Don’t get me wrong, I am all for freedom too….I could care less what gays do…i think they have every right to do what they do…just like churches have a right not to marry gay people….I am trying to protect the sanctity of marriage by getting the government out of it…..

I’m a veteran also and many feel like I do. We’ve taken this “thank veterans” bullsh*t far enough. We volunteered for service. We got paid for it. It doesn’t mean we can’t make mistakes or be idiots. I know plenty of stupid veterans. But being a veteran doesn’t give you a license to do whatever the hell you want.

The same sex marriage issue is changing among the young in the US and perhaps as many as ten others countries. However, for the vast majority the of 200 countries in the world, it is not changing. ex. Russia, China , India and any Muslim country. In these countries, gay marriage is seen as an example of moral decay in society.( Especially western moral decay)

As a 28 year old returning to school for my masters I can safely say that I don’t know a single person under the age of thirty that is against allowing gay marriage. Many of the people I spend time with are Libertarian in nature but most of them are church goers that would consider themselves Republicans. Whether you like it or not, the polls are accurate and may even undersell the reality. In 30 years the gay equality movement will be seen in the same way that the womens equality movement was seen.

Old people not wanting change and young people pushing that change forward until it is the accepted norm. Again, you may not like it but it is reality.

What a worthless post. You have no clue as to what your post indicates other than the words you thought were of value.

You stated “I don’t have to thank anyone for their service in Iraq because I was against sending them there so their choice to go was of no service to me” demonstrates you seriously misunderstand global implications regarding global politics. Other than what is assumed, please, for the love of interest, share with the rest of us ‘why’ you were against sending them so as it “was no service to me.”

One thing that appears to be certain, if you had your freedom or more of your freedoms taken from you (AND IT’S COMING WITH THE DIRECTION OF THE COUNTRY), you’d be wholely grateful for those who were standing up in arms for your rights.

I was against sending them to Iraq because Iraq and Saddam Hussein were never a threat to my rights and safety or the security of this country. Going there to fight to overthrow the government was of no service to me, but as I said I do admire the good intentions of those who allowed themselves to be convinced that it was.

I like that comment. The purpose of marriage was to provide a stable atmosphere to have and raise children in. I detest the homosexual movement as its all about corrupting this institution – make no mistake what they really want is to force people against their conscience to participate in the vile farce of a “marriage” – that’s why when a Christian photographer does not want to take photos, or a Christian wedding cake maker does not want to sell to them, rather then go find someone with their values they push to make someone Christian accommodate, evil exists to pervert and corrupt.

There is an Agenda here – Communists setup the Mattechine Society to see homosexuality, pornography and all manner of perversion normalized – why?

Freedom without morality destroys. Forcing acceptance of the filth that is homosexuality fits as Marx was at WAR with God and Capitalism. The purpose is coming against God ordained having a father as priest of his household, nurturer, provider, defender and discipliner bringing his children up in the admonition of the Lord. But the agenda is to create a society so morally bankrupt and dependent on cradle to grave government care that not only do they want it, they are so dumbed down they can’t survive without it.
