‘Real News:’ Obama Slams Michigan ‘Right to Work’ Legislation
President Barack Obama spoke out against ‘right to work’ legislation moving through the Michigan Legislature during a speech in Detroit Monday. Michigan, a state that supported the president in two presidential elections and is thought by many to have benefited most from the White House decision to bailout the failing automobile industry in Obama’s first term, is on the cusp of making law a Michigan House bill that would make the payment of union dues voluntary in the private sector; and a separate bill in the state Senate that also applies to public sector unions with the exception of police and fire unions.
Labor activists and Michigan Democrats have cried foul that the bills were moved quickly through the GOP-dominated House and Senate last week, and on Monday, the president said this is an issue of Republicans wanting to take away workers’ rights to bargain.
“We should do everything we can to keep creating good middle-class jobs that help folks rebuild security for their families. What we shouldn’t be doing is trying to take away your rights to bargain for better wages and working conditions,” President Obama said Monday in Detroit.
“What they’re really talking about is giving you the right to work for less money.”
On ‘Real News’ Monday the panel discussed the realities behind Michigan’s “right to work” laws and what has instigated them in the first place:

Posted on December 11, 2012 at 5:06pmMr. President, the union members are tired of seeing their union dues going straight to your campaign fund with or without their approval. If the unions would use the dues to support and protect their members, the unions would get a whole lot more support from the members than they are getting now.
I have heard it said that they want the benefits of being in the union without paying union dues. What about the 47% of Americans that benefit from tax dollars without paying any taxes themselves. The door swings both ways.

Posted on December 13, 2012 at 9:28amI have met many union guys in the past 4 years at tea party rallies……I was told by them that 40-50% of them do NOT like what Obama and the unions are doing, hence, they joined the tea party…….even some there at the “protests”, are there only because they were pretty much told to be there……many are embarrassed and ashamed of the behavior of many of them…….what a shame that they are FORCED to pay dues if they want that job

Posted on December 11, 2012 at 12:11pmTaking away workers rights? Really. Is that the best the theiving union can do? But it is ok to forceably take their money and spend it on lavish luxuries by the union bosses? If the union members were so smart, they would take have gotten rid of these leeches long ago.

Posted on December 11, 2012 at 11:27amIn the public schools in Detroit, Mich., according to the U.S. Department of Education, only 7 percent of the eighth graders are grade-level proficient or better in reading. And these teachers want to be protected by the unions. Who is protecting the students?
