The Breathtaking Then-and-Now Photos of an Abandoned Detroit High School

Some would argue the city of Detroit has experienced a boom and bust like no other in the last century. With the automotive and factory industry in the 1920s and onward spurring the city’s population, infrastructure to support it followed. But industry changes led to economic downfall that depressed the city, causing much of the population to leave, while its infrastructure remains, crumbling.

The website Detroiturbex.com is featuring the dilapidated state of the city. It states that “Detroit has no other option but to change.” The project is on hand “documenting that change.”

One of its projects is of the abandoned, original building of Cass Technical High School. Detroiturbex put together eerie then and now images. Here are just a sampling of those:

The old building was torn down officially in 2011. Here’s a time-lapse video showing some of the demo:

The group also takes you through an interactive photo tour of the building’s 10 levels (a cool feature is as you click each each level it builds the school up higher). The imagery for the interactive Cass Tech model was created with Google Sketchup Pro. Detroiturbex constructed it using blueprints, student records and a survey of the buildings in 2010 when they photographed each room.

The school itself was founded in 1907 with the original building being completed in 1919. The new Cass Tech building was constructed in 2004 and the old school experienced a fire in 2007. Detroiturbex states that just five years after opening, the new school suffers from “shoddy workmanship and poor planning.”

The Detroiturbex project as a whole is intended to “raise awareness of the social and economic challenges the city of Detroit faces through photography.” The artist acknowledges that many of the places documented, like many urban exploring adventures, have not been accessed legally.

Detroiturbex has cased churches, neighborhoods, parks, schools and other buildings extensively. Find more about them here.

This story was updated to include that the building was officially demolished in 2011.

REAL stories that actually MATTER ——

Coleman Young single handedly destroyed Detroit through corruption. Kwame Kilpatrick was another corrupt POS mayor killing the city and he ended up in jail as well.   People,populations,MOVE…they move for economic reasons and when your population declines, everyone who remains must downsize. Detroit could easily be a “smaller” active, busy city…but not with the infrastructure for a city almost twice the size:

  2003 : 879,57
  2010: 703,000
  …as many schools are not needed, who cares, on one level, what it “once” was…what it is NOW is what matters…look at all the boom and bust towns that litter the west!..Detroit was a boom town based on the auto industry and all the service industries , police/fire/schools/retail/restaurants etc., as the auto industry shrunk, Detroit didn’t and now is being forced to resize itself without the benefit of time and planning…it’s a crisis management and running from fire to fire…rather than closing schools/ fire stations, police stations etc etc, merging resources…nothing was done, nothing changed…now everything is changing, rather quickly…I hope other cities, CA and NY I hope you are watching…less people = less govt, less jobs, less revenue…evolve or go instinct…

  One thing I’v noticed is that when the Blaze runs a story is will finally show up one to three days later on the small news networks (Abc,Cbs, Cnn etc.).one story back in Oct. took from Monday to Friday to finally make it to Aol and Huffpo.

  um are you all slow? The pictures are of an old building no longer in use that went through a fire. Don’t you see the last picture, the one before the video? See that big fancy structure to the right, yeah that is the replacement of the old building shown. So I am failing to see the economic depression portrayed here. And the admission by the site that the pictures were not legally obtained…So this photographer broke into an old abandoned building with no trespassing signs and took photos and put together this deception. Thanks Blaze for going along with the deception, despicable. And thanks for not telling the truth about it until the last few paragraphs so i can waste my time.

Read carefully. I am a Detroit suburbanite and not a huge fan of the city- But I will defend her in this case. The tragedy here is that the building is still standing and is not used for anything else. From what I understand- Cass Tech High School is more of a bright spot on the Detroit educational scene. The pics you are looking at are the result of the building being abandoned after the new school was built- not the students or teachers not caring. Trust me- there are a ton of schools in Detroit that are a total disaster, but as an institution, I do not believe Cass Tech is one of them.

  @MRUNNER: “From what you understand” is incorrect. The old Cass Tech building was finally demolished in 2011 because the NEW Cass Tech was built right next door in 2004 and the petitions to “redevelop” never came to fruition, therefore it saw the wrecking ball.

  So how are the renovations of Central Station going?
  The point that is lost in your post is that the building was there, they chose to build a new one then let the old one decay away. A huge new building for a fail school district which is losing students and wasting money on new buildings.
  Taylor schools and Warren Con won’t be open tomorrow because they can’t get enough teachers to show up. Big Union rally down in Lansing, you know.
  The point of the article is the waste of the district in building a new school with shoddy workmanship, letting the old school waste to nothing. Who made that decision?

  The fact is that most inner city schools are mainly black and have issues, but there are other issuse as well. The family structure and the street culture have also played a part. You will also find white schools in some areas that have issues.
  Please hold the race card for true racist comments or no one will listen to a thing you say. Not slamming you just stating a fact.
  BTW: there is as much racisim in the black culture as white. I have a freind that made it clear that he (black) could walk through his old neighborhood in Baltimore with no problem. However I (white) would not make it down the street. Was he being racist??

  So, KeatonC33 – when was the last time you visited Detroit? I used to live there – note I said, USED TO. Cass Tech is pretty representative of the entire city. Do a search for Michigan Central Railroad station in Detroit and you’ll see what had been an example of some of the finest architecture of the 20th century now turned into a crack house, totally trashed. This isn’t propaganda, it’s reality, and it happened thanks in part to Coleman Young’s leadership in the ’70s.

  Was in Detroit last Saturday for a company event at the Motor City Casino and Hotel. Could see the city skyline from our room. Was shocked that 2/3′s of the city was completely dark after the sun went down. DTEnergy building was lit, as well as a couple of taller buildings behind it, and then to the left Ford Field was lit up. In between, a dark void.

I was in a black neighborhood, in Huston,TX., section 8 housing. the buildings were 6 yrs old, and after the 3rd yr. the 600 apt. complexes looked just like this school…it’s the people..?…not the system…

  I’ll tell you why. Detroit has had democrat mayors for 50 years. (For real entertainment, do a search for video of the city counsel.) There is an extra income tax for working in the city, double if you also live there. The crime rate is frighteningly high. Almost everyone with a job, regardless of race, lives in one of the surrounding suburbs.

  I agree the structure looks good but there may be something there (structurally) that we can not see. I would say Asbestos is a factor in it being abandon and not torn down as well. It often times is less expensive just to let it sit than to pay the out of this world price to get asbestos removed.

  renovate? renovate? detroit once had a population over 1 million, estimates suggest a population under 400k by 2014 and with a graduation rate under 50% its only going to get worse. Decreasing revenu…oh sorry I mean tax base, outlandish government union,uaw, seiu, afl-cio, crony capitalist and pay to play contracts with lavish retirement plans free non-obamacare and collective bargaining takes care of any business building anything or any desire to come to this god forsaken state. You could drive a bulldozer down any street in detroit and flatten all the dilapidated buildings and not see a single person. Government buildings were not suppose to last forever. It is not practical or affordable to keep these building that do not have a need for. Tear them down and prepare the area for future concepts like “Little Moscow” or “Freedom World theme park” to give people who vote for the Over-reach of liberal & progressive politicians

  Guess it hasn’t occurred to you. Detroit is broke, there is no money to renovate or tear down. Any businesses that would consider moving into a black destructionist community would be crazy, they would be a target for the ‘peaceful’ population that lives in that community

Wow!!! That school was/is huge. I went to a small catholic high school here in Portland run by the Sisters of Mercy. Our high school was the only one in the city that had a pool…it was and remains very small. This school is HUGE!!! What a waste of potential.

My Dad Graduated from Cass Tech in 1947. It was the Best School in the world at one time. Before 1967. I still have my Dad’s yearbook from there.

  I’m going to make an observation here; I’m betting all the Blacks on welfare took over right around that time. Isn’t the late 60s early 70s when the blacks over ran Detroit, Chicago, L.A. etc. I’m sure the selfish unions set it up for them to just march in and like a disease, start eating at the local communities and the fabric of the society there. I noticed it’s all 99% all blacks in the pictures…just pointing out that unions and welfare dependents will usually suck the life out of a city. Once on of the best schools in the country now a dump…a reflection of the community!!!

It’s obvious money won’t solve the problem. Everybody there is content to shuffle through the garbage and sit in their seat in a sea of trash. Honestly, I don’t think you can fix that. If people want to live in squalor, what can you do? Is free public education worth continuing for these people? Probably not, since they’re sleeping through classes anyway. Slouching toward slavery.

  I agree, Mellow. This is a non story. This would be really bad if Cass Tech was no longer there. I thought this was the case until I saw the last frame. Granted, Detroit is BAAAAAD! I was a resident there when I went to college at CCS. Detroit is my “adopted hometown”. It was bad then. Didn’t think it could get worse. There’s a lot of blame to go around. Start with the riots in the 60s. Followed with Mayor Coleman A. Young (and the A stands for…..?) who was mayor for life. The people with the pride and the money flew to the suburbs so fast! Detroit did have “all its eggs in one basket” with the automobile biz but that didn’t give the RESIDENTS a free license to pillage and thieve! I wonder why this feature didn’t show the J.L.Hudson building, Crowley’s, Winklemann’s, Michigan Theater, Michigan Central Station, Tiger Stadium or many, many other stores and hotels in a once vibrant downtown?

  Opinion Cass did replace school But pictures of crumbling remains dozens of school, factories, infrastructure large number of vacant lots once built on, whole street blocks vacant, recent built houses abandoned shout of the economic collapse from lack of jobs, Fire destroyed areas abandoned crumbling remains, Oof the city from socialist liberal progressive crony local and fedgov rule. Pride came before the fall. For those that do not think it can happen here in USA Look it did. But right near by suburbs prosperous maintained though not unaffected by crime or corruption. Why have so many marched down the same path as Detroit? Social progressive, over taxing and socialist education control, overt selective policing, union and mob events, pushing moving out of industry, crony political corrupt, imbalanced budging leading to massive debt, prop up by external governments or it would go bankrupt. Also note similarity of large influx of dangerous criminal foreigner. Its like crazy people arguing over salary raises in Cass Tech as building is on fire then after still arguing in the abandon crumbling scrap heap.
