Gunman Opens Fire at Shopping Mall Near Portland, 3 Confirmed Dead
PORTLAND, Ore. (TheBlaze/AP) — A gunman opened fire in a suburban Portland shopping mall Tuesday, killing two people and wounding another as people were doing their Christmas shopping, authorities said.
Witnesses described a scene of chaos and disbelief as a gunman wearing some sort of camouflage outfit and what looked like a hockey mask fired rounds fire from a military-style rifle near the food court at Clackamas Town Center.
Parents with children joined other shoppers rushing to stores’ backrooms for safety as teams of police officers began entering the mall to find the shooter.
Clackamas County sheriff’s Lt. James Rhodes said later that the gunman was dead, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A shopper told KATU-TV he saw a man lying on the floor with a gun next to him.
Authorities went store-to-store to confirm that there was only one shooter and to escort hiding shoppers outside, Rhodes said.
Austin Patty, 20, who works at Macy’s, said he saw a man in a white mask carrying a rifle and wearing a bulletproof vest.
He heard the gunman say, “I am the shooter,” as if announcing himself, Patty said. He then fired several shots paced seconds apart.
A series of rapid-fire shots in short succession followed. Patty said he ducked to the ground and then ran.
His Macy’s co-worker, Pam Moore, told The Associated Press the gunman was short, with dark hair, and dressed in camouflage.
“I heard about 20 shots and everyone hit the ground,” Moore said. “That’s when we all just ran.”
Witnesses said the mall’s Santa Claus was among those who ducked for cover.
The mall is one of the Portland area’s busiest. It’s in a middle-class area that has become popular with families as falling real estate prices have put its homes just a few miles from downtown Portland within financial reach.
The mall has about 185 stores and a 20-screen movie theater among anchor tenants that also include Nordstrom and J.C. Penney. Sheriff’s deputies said it would remain closed during the investigation of the shooting, but it wasn’t clear how long that would take.
Shaun Wik, 20, from Fairview, said he was Christmas shopping with his girlfriend Tuesday and opened a fortune cookie at the food court. Inside was written “live for today, remember yesterday, think of tomorrow.”
As he read it, he heard three shots. He heard a man he believes was the gunman shout, “Get down!” but Wik and his girlfriend ran. He heard seven or eight more shots. He didn’t turn around.
“If I had looked back, I might not be standing here,” Wik said. “I might have been one of the ones who got hit.”
Kira Rowland told KGW-TV that she was shopping at Macy’s with her infant son when the shots started.
“All of a sudden you hear two shots, which sounded like balloons popping,” Rowland told the station. “Everybody got on the ground. I grabbed the baby from the stroller and got on the ground.”
Rowland said she heard people screaming and crying.
“I put the baby back in the stroller and ran like hell,” Rowland said. “It was awful. It was shots after shots after shots like a massacre.”
Holli Bautista, 28, said she was shopping in the Macy’s for a Christmas dress for her daughter when she heard pops that sounded like firecrackers.
“I heard people running and screaming and saying `Get out, there’s somebody shooting,’” she told the AP. “It was a scene of chaos.”
She said hundreds of shoppers and mall employees started running, and she and dozens of other people were trying to escape through an exit in the department store.
Bautista said the Macy’s opens into the food court area, where it was reported the shootings took place. Bautista said it sounded like the shots were coming from that direction.
Tiffany Turgetto and her husband had exited Macy’s through the first floor when they heard the gunshots coming from the second floor of the mall.
“People in front of us people were dropping, finding covering,” she told the AP. “People were yelling screaming and gasping, yelling to get out.
“The lady next to us, she threw a chair and started running. We couldn’t run because the chair was there.”
Turgetto and her husband and other people were able to quickly leave through a Barnes & Noble bookstore before the police arrived and locked down the mall.
“I had left my phone at home. I was telling people to call 911. Surprisingly, people are around me, no one was calling 911. I think people were in shock.”
Kaelynn Keelin was working at two stores down from Macy’s when the gunfire began and watched windows to another store get shot out.
She and her Made in Oregon co-workers ran to get customers inside the store to take shelter, Keelin said.
“We got lucky we stayed in,” she said. “If we would have run out, we would have ran right into it.”
A photo taken outside the mall:
“Shoppers who witnessed shooting are very emotional. Hugs, crying, tears Clackamas shooting,” writes KOIN-TV News’ Joel Iwanaga.
Shortly after mall-goers reported hearing approximately 60 rounds fired and police rushed to the scene, Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber issued the following statement:
My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. I appreciate the work of the first responders and their quick reaction to this tragic shooting. Oregon State Police Superintendent Rich Evans is on the scene. I have directed State Police to make any and all necessary resources available to local law enforcement.

Posted on December 11, 2012 at 9:03pmDenis Leary had a theory on drugs, and mine is the same for guns. Not less guns, MORE guns. Portland is one of the 3 counties/cites that make Oregon a blue state. I will bet everything I have that if a tragedy like this happened in my town, or any other town (excluding Eugene and Salem) there would have at least 3 people shooting back at this guy. It seems there is a trend that most of these “mall” mass shooters don’t open fire in some “redneck” ran hillbilly town where most people have a way to fight back.

Oregon is supposed to be safe and self sufficient. Everyone hunts, and loves firearms.
If everyone in Oregon over the age of 15 were fully trained in handgun safety, and were required to carry a loaded sidearm at all times, this never would have happened.
This whole thing would have been avoided if each of the victims had carried a concealed handgun. It should be mandatory that anyone over the age of 15 attend the NRA basic pistol shooting course, the Refuse to Be a Victim seminar, and Physical Combat Self Defense training. These would only take a few weekends to complete, and they could then be issued a state inspected M1911 .45 ACP left over from the military conversion to 9mm for a minor handling fee.
There are dozens of used and surplus weapons outlets where even poor folks can obtain a suitable sidearm for less than 600.00 –well within their yearly electronic games and entertainment budget. They can even select weapons from advertisers on The Blaze.
PS, Since the neighboring Washington state says that Gay marriage is allowed, and marijuana can be grown for personal use; getting a mandatory concealed weapons law passed would seem an eventful campaign issue.

Posted on December 11, 2012 at 8:58pmFunny, these shootings get all the media attention solely because they are the exception and not the rule. I don’t see media coverage when people use a gun to defend their live, the lives of their family, or the lives of their friends.
Kassandra Perkins being murdered by a thug football player? National news. Kia Yvette Jeffries shoots and kills her boxing champion husband while he’s beating her? Not a peep in the media at all.
Why? Because it doesn’t fit the mainstream media narrative of guns = bad and people = too stupid to use guns. Each and every day numerous people use guns to save themselves or others. I get the feeling it’s more important to sensationalize criminals than it is to even acknowledge the heroes that live among us.
Luckily Easy Bake Gun Club started doing a monthly Defensive Gun Use report that just came out yesterday. I have a feeling the liberals won’t like this but it’s still must read information for people who care:

Posted on December 11, 2012 at 10:23pmThank you both for spreading the word that firearms are used far more often by law abiding citizens for personal defense than for the horrible murders committed by deranged criminals. (Although this fact is rarely (if ever) reported by the MSM)
Guns act as “force equalizers” for all men, women, and children enabling defense from stronger, or more able, violent attackers that would otherwise not be possible. Please add this site to the list of those attempting to highlight the defensive use of firearms typically reported by local media:

Please excuse that the format of this webpage is a blatant rip-off, for the sake of expedience I thought the content was more important than the format.

Don’t worry about the skyrocketing debt, unemployment, or civil unrest issues; just ban guns.

To Eric and Nancy, I’m just wondering how much of a pay off to these “gun men’s” families it’s costing us? I mean after all, if it’s my tax dollars that you’re using to set these shootings up – in order to take away my guns, I think I have a right to know. Ya think?
How bout this instead. Just take my money, shake the baby, and punch yourself in the face. Forget about the guns because you’ve already caused the one’s who care about our Country to increase their arsenal three fold, and you sure as heck are NOT going to take them without the biggest fight in American history. Me? Oh, I don’t have the nine guns that your paperwork says that I do. I sold them all privately and for cash years ago. Reaalllyy. I’m telling you the truth just as much as you are telling the American people the truth. “You can trust meeeee…”.

Ok, idiot. Tell me one law that would have stopped this before it happened. You can get firearms *in prison*, idiot. What would you do then? Put up magic signs that keep criminals from entering? Stomped your feet extra hard and scared the criminal? Pass 2,000 pages of “gun control” laws that will be succinctly ignored by those intent on using firearms in crime? What would you do, idiot, that would work?
You’re too damned dense to understand that murderers don’t care about laws. You truly live up to your handle, idiot.

Posted on December 12, 2012 at 6:15amHi Catty,
Sorry if you were offended. Here’s why I continue to hammer away at the consequences of our porous southern border:
1. MS 13 gang members are being arrested along the border with tattoos captioned in Farsi, Iran’s language. Google it.
2. A US Border Agent found a pamphlet written in Farsi on the US side of the border which extolled the virtues of suicide bombing. Google it.
3. Explosions in Mexican border towns have all the earmarks of IED’s fabricated by the Iranian Special Forces (Quds). Google it.
4. If you travel to http://www.wnd.com today, you can read the report of highly trained Iranian Special Forces officers who have been smuggled across the border to lead teams of Iranian cell members. This report according to a spy who relates these facts from his/her time spent in Iran.
If you are rightly repulsed by this shooter and the impact that one armed man can have, imagine a squad of trained Iranian forces, armed with fully automatic weapons invading a similar mall or a middle school in Ohio. When the hammer falls in the Middle East, you will see reports of attacks all across the American landscape, at least until the terror squads disable the power delivery system.
Unfortunately, our current administration has exacerbated the potential for violence by selling over 2,000 high caliber weapons to Mexican drug cartels and using the CIA to launder drug profits for their “pet” cartels. Google all this.
