‘Harmless Fun’ or ‘Outright Racism’? Wait Until You See How This Popular Tennis Pro Dressed Up Like Serena Williams During a Match
Tennis pro Caroline Wozniacki deviated from her regular tennis routine in Sao Paulo recently, highlighting her backside more than her backhand. Following in the tradition of Andy Roddick and Novak Djokovic, Wozniacki took aim at her opponent (Maria Sharipova) by pretending to be a much more formidable player– Serena Williams, to be exact.
Stuffing her top and bottom with towels, Wozniacki strutted onto the court pretending to be her curvier, more successful rival.
The Associated Press snapped a full-length photo:

Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki jokingly wears towels under her clothes as she plays a Gillette Federer Tour exhibition tennis match with Russia’s Maria Sharapova in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Friday, Dec. 7, 2012. (Photo: AP)
Reactions have been surprisingly mixed.
Yahoo Sports called it “hilarious,” adding that Wozniacki’s impersonation was “uncanny.”
USA Today’s report gave less praise, but only really critical of the fact that Wozniacki didn’t take the impression further:
If you’re going to be Serena, hit your return with ferocity and glare at a linesperson. Hold up a picture of Kim Kardashian and listen to Green Day. Do something.
I can take off my shirt and say I’m imitating Matthew McConaughey, but if I don’t start every sentence with “all right, all right, all right” and overuse the words “ladies,” then what was it all for?
The Huffington Post, on the other hand, seems very convinced that Wozniacki’s stunt was racist. They posted an excerpt from a tumblr page reading:
…this isn’t “harmless fun” as one article described it. its racist. out and outright racism. mocking and making fun of the bodies of black women for a laugh? real funny, stupid white girl. real real funny.
They also re-posted this tweet: “Even as champions, all that matters is the deviation of our sexual organs from the white standard and that we are hot to trot.”
Take a look at the video and decide for yourself:
Though Wozniacki lost the match, she actually won the point where she pretended to be Serena. As USA Today points out, “this could be an effective strategy for all future Sharapova opponents.” The Russian tennis player has an excellent overall record, but always seems to choke up against Serena.
The match ended harmoniously though, with the two sharing a photo with Roger Federer (who can be seen laughing in the video):

Russia’s Maria Sharapova, right, and Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki pose for pictures with Switzerland’s Roger Federer after playing a Gillette Federer Tour exhibition tennis match in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Friday, Dec. 7, 2012. (Photo: AP)
Keep in mind when making your decision that tennis players have a long tradition of imitating one another.
Here, for example, is Andy Roddick imitating Sharapova:
He once spoofed Serena Williams, too:

I see you’ve fallen for Erica Ritz’s flat out lie. The HuffingtonPost did not say this was racist. All they did was ask whether it was racist and included opinions from both sides. They also included quotes from those who thought it was funny and not racist. Of course, the liars at TheBlaze will only tell you what they want you to believe because they know you won’t actually look into it yourself.

Man, you are as Hypocritical as it comes…. In almost EVERY post I read from you, you denounce something as “evil” or “Bad” and then turn around and do or say the same thing in a round-about way like it doesn’t apply to you…
With Grass Yesterday, YOU said that Grass and drugs are bad, but alcohol are okay… ALCOHOL IS A DRUG…
And you say don’t mock or make fun of others, and in the same post you say its okay to call people dopes….
so to wrap this up (in case you couldn’t follow along)
1. Alcohol is JUST as much of a drug as Marijuana (and is much more dangerous).
2. Calling someone a “dope” IS making fun of them..
3. and YOU are a hypocrite….
While I may not be perfect (and I will never claim to be, unless in jest…) I give issues thoughts from both sides before I blindly make a statement, and I suggest you begin to do the same lest you look like a fool. At least make sure you don’t make a statement and then contradict it all in the same post…

You know what, you’re right. This article asked whether this was racist as did the HuffPo article. Neither one endorsed one side or the other, rather they just put it out there. That is quite a distinction!
However, one article included a quote from the other, which was not endorsed by the other, and then claimed it actually had endorsed that opinion. By that logic, TheBlaze clearly thinks this is racist, too, because it included the above quotes claiming this was racist.
Erica Ritz’s lies would be similar to someone writing an article about TheBlaze and then saying that obviously TheBlaze hates black people and bases that opinion off a comment from you.

And even if you never say anything remotely racist they may still think you are a closet racist just because you are white. I have criticized black athletes and have been called a racist many times. So you must think TheBlaze is racist too, right? After all, they asked the same question as HuffPo. And no, TheBlaze article was not based only on the HuffPo article — it is asking the same exact question as the HuffPo. Each article did the same thing — include opinions from both sides and asked it readers what they thought. Clearly, both are very racist. I mean, simply asking questions like that are simply just racist. Even if one doesn’t pick a side and asks for its audience’s opinion, it is clearly peddling racism.
So, you have changed my mind, and TheBlaze, by posting this article, is obviously peddling racism.

By “racist,” I don’t mean I hate black people, I mean “racist” in the sense that I’ve come to believe typical stereotypes about black people. These beliefs aren’t based on ignorance either, but are based on exposure to black leaders (e.g., Barack Obama, John Conyers, Maxine Waters, Jeremiah Wright, Sheila Jackson-Lee, Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton, Louis Farrakhan, etc.). Without exception, black leaders are scheming liars, thieving punks, lazy bums and envious malcontents who openly work to destroy this nation as it was founded. Furthermore, if the 95% of black people who voted for Obama hate America as much as he does, I curse the day Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves without making arrangements to ship back to their homeland.

When we host the World Cup in 2014 I can just imagine all the white victims.
For any lily white people reading this – if you plan on going to Sao Paulo / Rio in 2014 or at any other time, stay in the tourist area’s and PLEASE PLEASE don’t get drunk in a public area, the mulattos will hunt you down like prey !
Each year after “carnival” the local Rio morgue is filled up, your travel agent won’t tell you that.
Welcome to my world

Posted on December 12, 2012 at 12:40pmUhmmm no.
As I remember in the late 60s there was a huge crime wave. Police went to arrest criminals to throw in prison. When the criminals responded by shooting, there was a shoot out. And Brasilian police have been known to use submachineguns. There was a famous shoot out in Niteroi in the last 60s or early 70s which demolished the last violent gang for a while.
Ovens? No! Overwhelming fire power in response to criminals refusing to give up? Yes!.
What Americans need to know is that crime has had a great affect on Brasilian driving habits. They don’t stop for stop signs day or night. Refusing to to deal with crime is deadly.

Posted on December 11, 2012 at 11:21amThere was zero racism here. She made fun of ONE PARTICULAR PERSON who does not represent the attitudes, mannerisms, or body type of all black women. I know black women who are skinny as rails and white women who outsize Serena in those areas. I think these reporters and commentators need to get out of their bubbles and take a look at the real world. Isn’t that what they’re supposed to do anyway?

Posted on December 11, 2012 at 11:30amAgreed….. Having big breast and **** are not racially exclusive… Unless your Asian… Those traits don’t typically apply to Asians…
This was simple fun, and was not meant to offend Miss Williams, just poke a jab at her… It wasn’t racist in the slightest… Unless the lady followed up the outfit with a press conference saying, “Take that ni**er…” Which I highly doubt…
I think this was just a fun joke that people are thinking too much about.

So some people that happen to be white poke some good natured fun at someone who happens to be black. Ever scene a roast? That is what they were doing. Was Serena offended? I would guess not. Posted on December 11, 2012 at 1:36pmSo, you don’t recognize the double standards in the media??
Jamie Foxx, Dave Chappell mock white people, they’re ‘funny, harmless comedians.’
Any white says anything negative about a black, they’re ‘outright racist, bigoted’, etc……
Oh, unless they’re a good liberal like Robert Deniro..”We aren’t ready for a white first lady, are we?”

Posted on December 11, 2012 at 11:09amLooks good on you lady, but that is not why Williams wins. She is just better a better Tennis professional than you,—as we see. May be you would do better with an office job with your outfit.
It is not just having fun or racism. It is just envy of a better person. Not a big deal really. But I doubt the actions of her envy will make her a better Tennis player. Evidently, she does not want to work as hard as it takes, to beat S. Williams on the court.

Posted on December 11, 2012 at 11:08amOh please. Now we can’t make fun of a person because he or she is black. Get over yourselves. There was nothing racist about this. They were enacting the description of Serena. Maybe if she sees others mock her, she will realize exactly how she looks and this will keep her outburst in check.

Posted on December 11, 2012 at 11:23amYou’re forgetting the flowcharts of Politically Correct conduct. Only blacks can make fun of blacks. Blacks can make fun of whites. The confusion sets in on if a Hispanic or Asian can make fun of a black. It would depend on the nationality likely. If the race hails from a nation that is economically destitute they get more leeway in their ability to express themselves. It is good this woman is a woman, but she is white, and therefore any mockery, criticism, or comments or conduct that sheds a negative or humorous light on a darker skinned race is automatically racism, regardless of context, or original intention. This is a brave new world we live in, and the new speak can get complicated.

So why should the rest of us be concerned about something imitating someone else. The last I looked, white people, and others who aren’t BLACK, have big T & As also.

If they used anything similar it would be plagiarism if they did not cite sources. I guess you did this frequently in school or college. It is an on going problem in school too. I find more and more students cheating and not citing sources.

By saving that little tid-bit for last, the reader reads the entire story thinking that what was done is unique and strange. This makes what she did seem like more of a personal insult, and perhaps even racism.
Then at the very last you read that this mimicry is common among tennis players. Changing the entire context, and understanding of the article. This does a disservice to the reader, and stinks of manipulation, which is ok for a crime novel, it’s not ok for someone that is supposedly delivering the news.
Your personal attack is much the same. Childish manipulation similar to what one would experience on the playground in 3rd grade.
