Conservative Leaders Warn GOP Not to Compromise During Period of Testing

Conservative leaders are urging Republicans in Congress not to compromise their conservative values when negotiating with President Barack Obama.

Signed by more than 100 conservatives, an open letter to GOP lawmakers circulated on Wednesday warns that the Republican Party is “entering into a period of testing.” While the letter never specifically mentions ongoing “fiscal cliff” negotiations, which includes raising taxes, the letter tells Republicans that have “a mandate to fight for conservative principles” because they held onto the House of Representatives in November.

From Yahoo! News:

Among the signers are Al Cardenas, chairman of the American Conservative Union; Ginni Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas; Foster Friess, a Wyoming businessman who helped bankroll a super PAC supporting Rick Santorum’s presidential bid; and longtime conservative activists Richard Viguerie and Phyllis Schlafly.

Saying that Democrats want to “fundamentally change” America,” the letter appeals to Republicans to stand “united” and not vote with their Democratic colleagues on legislation that “violates the principles you publicly committed to support.”

And to any Republicans who want to compromise with Obama, the letter threatens possible primary challenges for those individuals.

“Let us also remind you that a great many potent conservative organizations and millions of conservative and liberty-loving voters do not believe in the divine right of incumbents to be re-nominated. Conservatives know how to recruit and support candidates,” the letter states.

Instead of compromising, conservatives should stay strong and eventually the country will grow tired of the “left’s failed agenda,” the letter adds.

“If Republicans provide a consistent, conservative alternative, the time will come, probably sooner than later, when most Americans will become fed up with the left’s failed agenda and be ready for a change to ‘throw the bums out’ and restore limited, Constitutional government.”

What do you think Republicans in Congress should do, stand strong or compromise?

Let Obama take this budget mess on his shoulders, let pelosi and Reid be blamed as well. Let this be all of their legacy, let it be their epitaphs.

That sounds great, but unfortunately the GOP will always get the blame. Nobody in the MSM will ever blame Pelosi, Reid, or Obama for anything. That’s already been proven.

In 4 years the country will be much worse off and a 3rd party could win. If the GOP compromises they are toast and everyone will give up on them. Two times the Republican put in a good old boy from the network, one of those, “it’s his turn now to run types” and they failed. They will win if a solid conservative is nominated and if not a 3rd party will arise and I will vote libertarian and then we get 4 more years of the same with Hillary. The GOP must see what is up, compromise is why they are sucking the hind teat right now. It is not more to the left we want, it’s more to the right. Enough people didn’t vote in this election to cause Romney to lose or voted libertarian. There were enough libertarian votes in Florida, had they gone to Romney he would have won the electoral vote. I’m not sure I want these bunch of morons that don’t get it running the show anyway. They obviously are being outclassed by the Communists.

I agree with most of your post but your libertarian florida comment is not true. Romney lost florida by 70,000. Gary Johnson only got 45,000. I have looked at every state and i cant find a single state that Romney could have won with Gary Johnson votes.
      http://www.politico.com/2012-election/map/#/President/2012/

A more plausible factor is people not showing up to vote – since about 12 million less people voted in 2012 than 2008

Lefty…political solutions are not going to be enough to turn the boat around….we are suffering spiritual turmoil, and only a spiritual approach can possibly reach deep enough into the heart of america, to make any difference. The only problem with that is the majority of our population has been struck deaf to truth and blind to proof. The propagandist ideologues, running interference for Bah Rahk and his globalist associates are waaay ahead of the game.

Wow – thats what we have been saying for months….This would have been good advice for the republican nominee – but the republican chose Mitt Romney instead. You cant expect the party to be all conservative and Constitutional when they select the most moderate every 4 years. You cant expect the party to cut the budget when they kick off all the fiscal conservatives from the house budget committes…

Soybomb….I find myself in agreement w/you again….what’s the world coming to? We have lost a conservative message, and now we have a con-swerve-ative movement in the house…WTF? I cannot discern a reason or motive, except maybe ‘extortion’? Death threats? Early onset menopause?
Looks to me, Boener needs testosterone supplements. Is he catholic? That would explain a little. I am truly puzzled and more than disappointed. The globalist ‘lobby’ has got greasy fingerprints all over this. I don’t think it can be stopped, and its just a matter of time, and not much of that.
All the shootings around the country have a ‘manchurian’ stink about them and there is a great chance of public sentiment on gun control turning against the 2nd amendment…..just like the U.N. needs it.
With the unions getting smacked, like they have been, I see the potential of serious violence growing. The politics in this country are getting pushed into ‘fringe’ territory, and that can’t be good.
I can say that the nation is becoming unrecognizable, as the bastion of liberty that it has ALWAYS been. WE have lost our “collective” mind!

It still amazes me how people are so ill informed that they BELIEVE the left’s lies about “Do nothing” congress….OBAMA is the one that shut the GOP OUT during his disastrous Healthcare debacle, He is the one that told McCain that the election is over and he (Obama) won. He is the one that tried to make a spectacle of Ryan and his budget. Pelosi stands tall and LIES HER BUTT off and BELIEVES it.. Same for Reid…But the MSM lies also, and no one CALLS them on it…so those that are not following what is actually going on, believe what they hear…..IF congress is “do nothing” THAT is what I WANT…For them to STOP EVERY SINGLE THING that Obama and his CROOKED ADMIN try to put through!

Good advice. The Left never stops hammering it’s message and never admits to defeat. That much about them I admire. The problem is of course that their message is evil.

The Right could do well to emulate the traditional American value of not being a “good sport”, cursing that you lost, and railing for a rematch. Politeness is for the people you never read about in history books, in politics.

Come on now, don’t backslide. Left or right is purely human, nothing evil or divine about any of it. And this notion that the right is somehow timid or too easily brow beaten – its nonsense. The rightwing political/media complex is bigger, louder, more successful, more influential – and more aggressive – than anything the left has. The truth is somewhat simpler, that “evil” message you talk about was embraced by more people than was the message – and methods – from the right. I guess it’s harder to admit that than it is to play coy.

The right possesses very little media support, outside of Fox and Am talk radio. I’m not minimizing that, I’m noting that compared to “all the other networks”, movies and FM radio, as well as AP/UPI and other press sources, the cards are not stacked in their favor. And I’m sorry, but there is good and bad in the world. Of course people are possessed with the ability to choose either, or as you say, ‘it’s human’. If somebody wishes to force me to conform to their economic policies which necessarily violate my beliefs and conscious (and not just me, but millions of others as well), that’s simply not a matter of a disagreement over trivialities.

Truth be told, I really don’t want what passes for the GOP to win another election. I abhor the Democratic party, but the GOP is pre-compromised from the start and is little more than a foil to allow the Dems to usher in more statism. It would be nice to see the Libertarians ascend and knock the GOP out of the picture altogether. Wishful thinking I know.

Americans should protect the Bush temporary tax cuts for the millionaires and billionaires.

Just because those job creators didn’t create any jobs after those cuts, and the economy collapsed, that doesn’t mean the slightly raising the marginal tax rates slightly won’t destroy the economy! Doing so would only tick off the richest, and then they wouldn’t donate to Republicans at the next elections!

Just because 60% of Americans are in favor of letting those temporary tax breaks expire, and just because President Obama ran on letting those tax breaks expire and won, that doesn’t mean Republicans shouldn’t stand firm with “we the people” who want those tax breaks to expire! Be strong!

Definitely a tipping point, will the repubs stand on their side and let the America which is balanced precariously, remain balanced, or will they move over to shake hands with the dems, and discover the fiscal cliff is something which the dems have been standing over, sure that the repubs would come over, fall first and provide them a soft landing? Better to let the dems plunge headlong below, while Americans are weaving together the ropes to hold our beloved country up.
