British Census Data Shows Islam Is the Fastest Growing Religion in England; Christianity on the Decline

Islam is the fastest growing religion in England and Wales, according to new census data. The number of people identifying with no religion nearly doubled over the last decade while the percentage of people who call themselves Christians has dropped to 59 percent, down from 72 percent 10 years ago, CNSNews.com reports.

The Muslim Council of Britain was pleased with the new data, saying Muslims were playing a “significant part in increasing diversity in Britain.”

Of the roughly 56.07 million people counted in the census, 33.24 million described themselves as “Christian” while 2.7 million identified as Muslims, an increase from 3.0 percent to 4.8 percent over a 10-year period. Further, the 2.7 million Muslims in England and Wales make it the second largest religion there. The next largest religions are Hinduism (817,000), Sikhism (423,000), Buddhism (248,000) and Judaism (263,000).

Religious leaders attempted to explain away the trend. “Christianity is no longer a religion of culture, but a religion of decision and commitment,” said a spokesman for the Catholic Church.

A spokesman for the Archbishop’s Council of the Church of England said “one of the reasons may well be fewer people identifying as ‘Cultural Christians’ i.e. those who have no active involvement with churches and who may previously have identified as Christian for cultural or historical reasons.”

Other mainstream and fringe faiths (including pagan, pantheist, wiccan, satanist, druid, “Jedi Knight” and others) lagged far behind, but the number of people declaring themselves to have no religion jumped to 14.4 million, from 7.7 million a decade ago. This means a full one-quarter of people in England and Wales now identify as having no faith.

In the U.S., by contrast, a 2007 Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life survey found 16.1 percent of respondents identified as “unaffiliated” with any particular religion, while in the 2008 American Religious Identification Survey the figure was 14.9 percent. (The U.S. Census Bureau is prohibited by law from asking questions on faith affiliation on a mandatory basis.)

British secularist groups did not conceal their delight, reiterating predictions that Christians could be in the minority within five years.

Andrew Copson, of the British Humanist Association (BHA), said the new census data proves governments need to realize that religion is growing “decreasingly relevant.”

Additionally, Terry Sanderson of the National Secular Society said the data “should serve as a warning to the churches that their increasingly conservative attitudes are not playing well with the public at large.”

UK muslim immigration, legal and illegal, is huge. Muslims have more children, and British young people are being seduced into becoming muslim.

The main problem is that Islam is being sold as a religion, when in fact it is a predatory ideology. Thus, as a “religion”, many ill-informed people consider it bigoted to oppose or criticise it. Free speech, with regard to Islam, is being crushed. (Note to the Blaze; principles matter.)

Few people over there seem to realise how incredibly dangerous this is. Belgium is further along this road to disaster because they have been more tolerant of muslim immigrants. Now, because of their increasing numbers, muslims are being elected to positions of power.

I don’t believe that England has a constitution that guarantees separation of church and state. As a matter of fact, the monarch is the head of the Church of England.

I wonder what the monarch will have to say as the so-call religion gains more converts and adherents in England.

Another interesting factoid: of the 56,070,000 citizens counted in the census, there are only 263,000 subjects of the monarch practicing Judaism. That;s like 213 to 1. I wonder how fairly they will soon be treated and protected as Israel is thrown under the bus of world opinion.

Can we all sing Kumbayah?

To the secularist who believes that Church membership has fallen off because of the Church’s “increasingly conservative attitudes”. No, the faithful remain with the Churches that DON’T become increasingly Progressive, like “Gay” Churches and/or “Social Justice” Churches. When a Church no longer teaches God’s Words and principles, the faithful will leave that Church.

Also, there are people that don’t attend Church because they rather not obey God’s Laws.

  I agree with you. If you are gay, why would you even want to be a part of a community that hates you and does everything they can to deny you equal treatment under the law? Nevermind the fact that they condemn you to eternal torture and hellfire. This is a church that hates your very being.   Indeed, why would someone so defective sexually wish to associate with individuals possessing sexuallity which has better than a “snowball’s chance in hell” of resulting in procreation? Astoundingly, the individuals, who, in many cases, can reproduce through the “carrot” of sexual activity and who adhere to the tenets of their faith don’t maintain “hatred” for, or begrudge “equal treatment under the law” for the poor sinners unable to follow age-tested doctrine but, instead, detest the sin.   Having met someone who self-identifies as “Muslim” does not really matter. I have met people who identify themselves as Roman Catholic who neither follow the precepts of the church nor its teachings. As such, they are not really Roman Catholic. I know “Lutherans” who seem to disagree with Luther and the list goes on. None of these people truly “belong” to the churches with which they identify themselves. Similarly, if a self-identified Muslim does not follow the teachings of Muhammad, he is not truly Muslim. Self-identification as “Muslim” does not really matter.
  
  The radicals claim the Qu’ran gives them authority to attack us by any means. The moderates say it does not and is a charter of peace.
  
  So, the defining question of our time is “Who has the correct understanding of the Qu’ran: the moderates or the radicals?” The only way to form an informed opinion is to read the Qu’ran yourself. Have you done so? Have you started reading it?
