Smugglers Blast 85-Pounds of Pot 500 Feet Over U.S. Border Using…Drug Cannons

YUMA, Ariz. (TheBlaze/AP) — U.S. Border Patrol agents say smugglers have come up with yet another, shall we say, creative way to get drugs in the country – a cannon.

Authorities say 33 cans of marijuana totaling 85 pounds (that’s worth $42,500) were spotted Friday in a field near where the Colorado River crosses the U.S.-Mexico border. They believe the cans were launched about 500 feet into the U.S. using a pneumatic-powered cannon.

After searching the area, agents recovered a carbon dioxide tank.

“By actually shooting it over the fence, they don’t have to worry about mules or smugglers actually backpacking it across,” Kyle Estes, Yuma Sector Border Patrol public affairs officer, said according to the Yuma Sun.

Mexican authorities were also notified and searched their side of the border.

Although someone must have been slated to pick up the cans in the U.S., the Yuma Sun reported a concerned citizen alerted authorities before that could happen. No arrests have been made and those on Mexico’s side made off with the cannon itself.

Authorities say Border Patrol agents in the Yuma sector near the Arizona-California border are adapting and shifting resources as smugglers come up with new ways of transporting their contraband. One of these methods, according to the Yuma Sun, was ramp of sorts that was used by smugglers who tried to drive over the fence in October. They were unsuccessful when the SUV got stuck and fled the scene before Border Patrol arrived.

    Our military has “counter battery” radar that will determine the exact location of the firing point. All that’s needed is a nice 120 mm mortar or 155 mm gun, some counter battery radar, and a trained gun crew. Scratch one “drug cannon” and crew. Life’s tough, and it’s even tougher when you’re stupid.

      We had it and couldn’t use it in Iraq. What makes you think we’ll be able to use it out here? Plus, I don’t want a bunch of artillery on the border just waiting for the right administration to turn them inward.

      This entire situation wouldn’t be happening if we just ended prohibition (of canibus of course). There’s no reason for it to have ever been put in place, and there’s certainly no reason for it to continue to be in place.

      I have built/used SPUD launchers before and fired 2 lbs “taters” about 150 years. Why use CO2 cannons? Just some PVC pipe and hairspray/WD40 and an igniter.

      Cheap easy to build and light enough to run with. LMAO

      I don’t look at it as sending packs of marijuana over the border, but rather ammunition made of marijuana. Like the rockets raining down on Israel I consider this an act of war. Fire back! ! !

    Brilliant! Love the idea, shame on the smugglers for poor execution. You guys have demonstrated the feasibility of the idea, and now need more R&D so you can launch the canisters further, and more quietly so you can engage undetected by curious neighbors. Furthermore, your choice of location must also be examined.

    Hopefully you can find a way to suppress the sound of the cannon firing without losing the necessary velocity at the muzzle to propel the canisters. Set a goal of a 1000 foot trajectory with landing zones easily accessible by vehicles. Determine appropriate payloads for easy pick-up in the US.

    Now…if MJ was legal in the US, we could easily build that cannon and start shooting the weed southward. Electronic transfers of cash make this viable, and I’ll bet the quality of product is superb.

      prohibition has never nor will ever work, it creates crime and senseless murder! prohibition made al capone and a host of others “including the revered kennedy’s rich! yes the kennedy’s, look it up! they smuggled bootleg alcohol into the united states. the murder rates during the first prohibition, pale in comparison to what the current prohibition slaughter has wrought. are the deaths and murder of otherwise innocent people ok with you? supporting the prohibition of cannabis means you are ok with MURDER!
      I know, some of you will disagree but if you do any research you will see that it does in fact equate to murder, on a daily basis, in the USA and other countries.
      So which will it be, let adults exercise their feedom and liberty and pursuit of happiness or condone MURDER! for if you support the prohibition, you are an accessory “before, during and after the fact” to murder. bet you never thought about that part of it, did you?

      So much for the great use of federal money on building a wall. Useless of course unless you are one of the companies who benefited from unnecessary spending. Also another great indication on the ROI from the federal spending on high tech surveillance equipment use on the border. At the end of the day the real concern about SS and Medicare is that it is squeezing out the wealthy and large corporations who have made $billions off of federal and state spending.
